  • What does "prototyping" mean in practice?

    - by prot
When I recently asked about the uses of Ruby someone told me it was good for prototyping. I basically know what that means, quickly get the very base of your app up and working, see if there are conceptual problems and then add the rest. Am I right with how I understand prototyping? What would be a concrete example of prototyping a Snake game in Ruby or any other language?

  • Need help regarding internationalization of iPhone application

    - by Taufeeq Ahmed
I have provided support for two languages, English and Chinese, in my iPhone application. I use string files for the languages using "key"-"value" pairs and my application displays the appropriate language using NSLocalizedString(@"Fund red not red?", @""). I get only Chinese text when I run the app in XCode. How can I switch to different languages in XCode (iPhone simulator)?

  • What are the best Perl Introductions and references?

    - by Kieveli
I've been programming for 15+ years, and I've done perl programming 3 times in the past. Every time I come back to it, I remember nothing of the language. It's very bizarre. Now it's time to hit perl again, and I'm wondering what the best Intro / Reference / Best Practice sites are that people use. Which Perl Intro / Reference site do you recommend?

  • Why Windows 7 isn't written in C#?

    - by Joan Venge
I saw a similar question about the reason Google Chrome wasn't written in C#. But with the upcoming version of Windows and Microsoft's flagship language, I am having a hard time understanding why Microsoft isn't pushing C# to its fullest potential to give it more exposure via their market share? In addition can be interpreted as "Is C# and the .Net framework suitable to run a modern OS like Windows 7" Btw this is not a flaming question, but curiosity. I use C# daily and really love it.

  • Best way to learn SQL Server

    - by Jason Baker
So I'm getting a new job working with databases (Microsoft SQL Server to be precise). I know nothing about SQL much less SQL Server. They said they'd train me, but I want to take some initiative to learn about it on my own to be ahead. Where's the best place to start (tutorials, books, etc)? I want to learn more about the SQL language moreso than any of the fancy point and click stuff.

  • Find localized Windows strings

    - by DougN
I need to find some strings that the current version of Windows is using. For example, when I create a new folder, it is initially named "New Folder" on English Vista. I need to programmatically find what that folder would be named on any language and version of Windows that I might be running on. Anyone have any ideas how to do that?

  • How to generate function call graphs for JavaScript?

    - by Jeremy Rudd
Are there softwares that can generate graphs that show which functions call which functions? I need to analyze JavaScript source code, a language which Doxygen/Graphviz does not support, though it does support C++ and others. If there are no tools that support JavaScript out-of-the-box, is there a way to convert JS to C++ so I can use Doxygen itself?

  • Adding title in contentplaceholder adds second empty title tag

    - by boris callens
My master page has a contentplaceholder in the head tag. Because I want my page's title to represent the function of the current page and because I want the title to be translated in the user's language I have added a title tag in the page's head's contentplaceholder. All jolly and good except that now there appears a second, empty title tag that off course isn't valid. Any ideas how to solve this?

  • is there an scp/sftp client library available for flex?

    - by nont
I need to send files securely from Adobe Air. In any other language, my first thought would be sftp/scp, but I don't see any libraries to do that in Flex. I'm new to flex, so I'm not sure where to look for code examples and repos. It looks like the raw socket interface is available, so I could write one if no good examples exist. Of course, I'm trying to avoid that.

  • Is it worth moving from stored procedures to linq ?

    - by Josef
I'm looking at standardizing programming in an organisaiton. Half uses stored procedures and the other half Linq. From what i've read there is still some debate going on on this topic. My concern is that MS is trying to slip in it's own proprietry query language 'linq' to make SQL redundant. If a few years back microsoft had tried to win customers from oracle and sybase with their MSSQL database and stated that it didn't use SQL by their own proprietry query langues ie linq. I doubt many would have switched. I believe that is exactly what is happening now by introducting it into the applicaiton business layer. I have used MS for many years but there is one gripe that I have with them and that is that they change their direction a lot. By a lot I mean new releases of .net, silverlight etc are more than 30% different from previous version. So by the time you become productive a new release is on the way. As things stand now a web developer using .net would need to know either vb.net or c#, xml, xaml, javascript, html, sql and now linq. That doesn't make for good productivity in my books. My concern is that once we all start using linq MS will start changing it between releases. and it will become an ever changing landscape. I believe that 'linq to sql' has already been deprecated. At leas with SQL we are dealing with a more stable and standardized language. Are we looking at a programming revolution or a marketing campaign? As far as I know other languages like Cobol have stayed the same for years. A cobol program from 20 years ago could pick up todays code and start working on it. Could a Vb3 person work on a modern .net web app ? Would these large changes need to be made if the underlying original foundation had been sound ? I worry about following MS shaking roadmap with it's deadends and double backs. are there any architects out there who feel the same ? regards Josef

  • agility of asp.net MVC

    - by Hellnar
Hello I am wondering how agile (fast to develop yet stable) asp.net MVC compared to frameworks using dynamic languages such as Django or Ruby on Rails. I will be happy if you share you experiance in the name of development speed (assuming each language/framework is known at a similar level) Things I love about Django Fast model design thanks to ORM Good template system Not too hard to deploy Easy to extend Lots of free apps to plugin and great documentation Thanks

  • Mechanize Javascript ...

    - by Horace Ho
    I try to submit a form by Mechanize, however, I am not sure how to add necessary form valuables which are done by some Javascript. Since Mechanize does not support Javascript yet, and so I try to add the variables manually. The form source: <form name="aspnetForm" method="post" action="list.aspx" language="javascript" onkeypress="javascript:return WebForm_FireDefaultButton(event, '_ctl0_ContentPlaceHolder1_cmdSearch')" id="aspnetForm"> <input type="hidden" name="__EVENTTARGET" id="__EVENTTARGET" value="" /> <input type="hidden" name="__EVENTARGUMENT" id="__EVENTARGUMENT" value="" /> <input type="hidden" name="__LASTFOCUS" id="__LASTFOCUS" value="" /> <input type="hidden" name="__VIEWSTATE" id="__VIEWSTATE" value="/..." /> <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- var theForm = document.forms['aspnetForm']; if (!theForm) { theForm = document.aspnetForm; } function __doPostBack(eventTarget, eventArgument) { if (!theForm.onsubmit || (theForm.onsubmit() != false)) { theForm.__EVENTTARGET.value = eventTarget; theForm.__EVENTARGUMENT.value = eventArgument; theForm.submit(); } } // --> </script> <script language="javascript"> <!-- var _linkpostbackhit = 0; function _linkedClicked(id, key, str, a, b) { if (!b || !_linkpostbackhit) { if (!a) { __doPostBack(key, id); _linkpostbackhit = 1; } else { if (window.confirm(str)) { __doPostBack(key, id); _linkpostbackhit = 1; } } } return void(0); } // --> </script> ... <a href="JavaScript:_linkedClicked('123456','_ctl0:ContentPlaceHolder1:Link', '',0,1);">123456</a> ... </form> I tried to add the 2 variables: page.forms.first['__EVENTTARGET'] = '_ctl0:ContentPlaceHolder1:Link' page.forms.first['__EVENTARUGMENT'] = '123456' and submit the form: page.forms.first.click_button(page.forms.first.buttons.first) The result returned only (re)show the current list of links as if I have not clicked on any of the links. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

  • JSON Feed Appears to be XHR when it should be JS

    - by Oscar Godson
I don't get why it'd doing this with the 2nd feed (appearing as a XHR call rather than just JS [looking at it in Firefox/Firebug]). The 2nd feed has the exact same MIME type as Flickr's JSON feed, yet the PortlandOregon.gov one shows as XHR and i get a NULL callback when using $.getJSON and if i use $.ajax with a 'json' or 'jsonp' type i get nothing at all. If i do the Flickr one i get the normal "[object Object]" callback. Whats going on? Please help! This has been such a headache for about a week. And i have authorization to change the feed, but i have to request the change, so if anyone knows for absolute sure let me know that! • Retro video games programming

    - by SebKom
I just watched the Super Mario Bros. -1 World glitch in youtube and I really began wondering about the code behind those games. Which language was used? What about the OS for the video games consoles? Are there any website with resources about this subject? (I am a 90s video gamer so I am particularly interested about the programming behind those games but feel free to make this a wiki and include links to resources about video games programming in general, if you want)

    - by Parag Meshram
I have started learning Java language for Android Application developement. As per my understanding based on static class, we cannot instantiate object of static class. But why instantiation of static nested class object is allowed in following situaltion? class EnclosingClass { //... class static StaticInnerClass { //... } } Why we can create object of inner class if it is marked as static? EnclosingClass.StaticInnerClass s = new EnclosingClass.StaticInnerClass()

  • Why did you learn C?

    - by Dinah
For those who know or are learning C: Why did you choose to learn C? Was a school or job requirement? Curiosity? Boredom? Personal growth? ... I'm especially curious to know how many learned it to better understand the inner workings of their language of choice. If this is your reason, was it prompted by Joel's suggestions?

  • Tips for transitioning from Visual Basic to Xcode

    - by Cyclone
I've been programming in VB.net for a while now, and I finally got access to a mac to make ipod apps. What are some useful sites, videos, etc. that could help me get used to Objective C and the Xcode IDE? I've stumbled upon the samples on the apple dev site, but none of them really give good examples which I could learn the syntax of the language from. Thanks for the help, Objective C is really a big change from VB.net!
