  • Learning C++ from scratch in Visual Studio?

    I need to get up to speed with C++ quite quickly (I've never used it previously) - is learning through Visual Studio (i.e. Managed C++) going to be any use? Or will I end up learning the extensions and idiosyncracies of C++ in VS, rather then the language itself? If learning in VS is not recommended, what platform / IDE do you guys suggest? Edit: Can anyone elaborate on what VS will hide or manage for me when coding unmanaged C++? I really need to be learning things like pointers, garbage collection and all the nuts and bolts of the low level language.. does VS abstract or hide any of this kind of stuff from you?     What exactly IS AJAX? Is there an official release? What exactly is jQuery? Is there an official release? From what I understand, these two "extensions" of JavaScript are just small scripts that enable extended functionality. But, what exactly are there? I mean, Adobe is a company that created Flash. If you want information about Flash, the official source is at Adobe. Is there an equivalent for AJAX and jQuery? I don't want to learn AJAX or jQuery form some shmo that doesn't know that correct syntax. I want to learn proper syntax and best practices.

I see several apps in the iPad App Store which utilize tabs, one such example is the Atomic Web Browser which provides a tabbed browsing experience (like Safari on the Mac or Firefox). Instead of reinventing this functionality, I'd like to reuse an existing component.

  • safari and gzip

    I'm loading jQuery from google on my site (http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.3/jquery.min.js) which is minned and gzip'd. In firefox, the jquery file shows as a 19k request, but Safari shows it as a 56k request. I'm assuming then that Safari is not accepting it as a gzip'd file. What's the deal? It's coming from google and I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be gzip'd

    I have an .htaccess file with following content: AddHandler x-httpd-php5 .php For some reason, whenever I upload it to the server, Firefox then wants to download PHP files instead of showing them, I think the Apache server has some error. What's wrong? Thanks in advance ^^

    I want to set the Expires header for all image/* and text/css. I'm doing this in a Filter. However: before calling chain.doFilter(..) the Content-type is not yet "realized" after calling chain.doFilter(..) the Content-type is set, but so is content-length, which forbids adding new headers (at least in Tomcat implementation) I can use the extensions of the requested resource, but since some of the css files are generated by richfaces by taking them from inside jar-files, the name of the file isn't x.css, but is /xx/yy/zz.xcss/DATB/.... So, is there a way to get the Content-type before the response is committed.

    I generally test my web apps with Firefox and use Firebug. I love Firebug. But when I'm testing JavaScript code in IE I use the debugger in Microsoft's Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. I would love to have an equivalent to Firebug's console.log methods which would allow me to log messages to Visual Web Developer. Any way to log messages to the error list/messages list/output pane using JavaScript?

  • IE6 turns jar into zip

    Using windows server, I have a path to a file that, when you click the button, executes the jar file and runs the program. At least in firefox. The problem occurs with IE6. It takes my file.jar and turns it into file.zip. Any suggestions here?

I added useragent for cfhttp, but it doesn't help. Opera, Firefox and Chrome open feed correctly from the same computer.

    When I load jQueryUI on a Windows XP machine using Firefox 3.6.3, I get a bunch of css errors: Error in parsing value for 'filter' Lines 18, 76, 77. Unknown property 'border-top-left-radius' Line 274. Unknown property 'border-top-right-radius' Line 275. unknown property 'zoom' Lines 300,306,336,345,385,408. Q: Should I just ignore these errors?

  • Visual Studio: How to override the default "Build Action" for certain extension types per project or solution?

    I'm serving my asp.net mvc views from many assemblies and copying views to the main application on post-build event. This works, however, I realized, that when I change something in view and just hit F5, changes are not included. What I have to do to see changes is to: save, build<- explicitly clicking, and then hit F5. However, it's pretty annoying solution. I discovered that setting Build action to "Embedded Resource" on view solves the problem as well, however other devs may not remember that they have to do this after adding every view to the solution. Is there a way to override the default build action for certain file extensions, such as: *.aspx, *.ascx in project or (better) in solution ? What I've found is an ability to add this setting globally, per machine, but I do not want to do that (link: http://blog.andreloker.de/post/2010/07/02/Visual-Studio-default-build-action-for-non-default-file-types.aspx) Any ideas ?

    It's about html/css/javascript menu ;) I am looking for unified solution to hide extra tabs of horizontal/tabbed menu when it overflows it's container. The initial idea plagiarized from firefox tabs workflow, i.e. when you have too much tabs it will wrap extra ones into collapsible dropdown button "List all tabs". I am thinking to play with overflow:auto in conjunction with javascript, but is there anything like this already implemented or maybe some better idea? Thanks.
