  • how to get ip address of a PPP(Point-to-Point Protocol) network interface?

    I have a Linux machine with two network interfaces, and I'd like to get the IP address of the PPP interface w1g1 but it doesn't show up in ifconfig.   • How to automatically start VM created by virt-manager?

    I have created a virtual machine with virt-manager that runs on kvm/qemu. The machine works well when started through virt-manager. However, I would like to be able to start and stop the VM through a script in init.d, so that it comes up and down along with the host. I need to have virt-manager show that the machine is running, and to be able to connect to its console through there. When I use the command line that is produced by running ps -eaf | grep kvm after starting the vm through virt-manager, I get some console messages about redirected character devices, but the machine does start and runs properly. However, I do not get any indication from virt-manager that it has started. How can I modify the command line to get virt-manager to pick up the running VM? Is there anything else about the command line that should change when starting outside of virt-manager?   • Windows 8 "Upgrade Offer" eligibilty when running the Consumer Preview in a VM?

    If I have a VM running Windows 8 Consumer/Release Preview, am I allowed to take advantage of the Windows 8 upgrade offer, and install it on that machine? I would have assumed not...as there was never a licensed version of XP SP3 through to Windows 7 installed in that VM. It was a clean installation of the Consumer Preview into a VM. My confusion comes from the notes at the bottom of the download page for the Upgrade offer which states: Offer valid from October 26, 2012 until January 31, 2013 and is for individuals and small businesses needing to upgrade up to five devices. If you are a business customer looking to upgrade more than five devices to Windows 8 Pro, contact your Microsoft partner for more information. To install Windows 8 Pro, customers must be running Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 Consumer Preview, or Windows 8 Release Preview. I am assuming it's not possible and i'll need to purchase the System Builder edition to install within a VM? My guess is that you can use your downloaded upgrade offer only if you updated Windows 7 to the release preview, and therefore had the Windows 7 license on the machine, I used the serial number from the Microsoft Website when downloading the Release Preview, and did a clean install, so there was never a Windows 7 license on the VM. I have MSDN for development purposes, but I am looking to run in a VM for personal use as well, so my MSDN license is not valid for that particular use.

  • Transfer of ownership of Windows 7

    I am thinking of purchasing a copy of Windows 7 via either ebay or GumTree. I am unsure as to how the product key works. A close friend of mine is warning me against buying it from ebay as he is suggesting that once it has been used, the operating system registers itself on microsoft servers using the serial number of the motherboard of the system where it has been installed. This means once installed on one machine you wont be able to install it on another machine. Now i am struggling to believe that an operating system can only be installed on one machine. Can someone please explain exactly how this works. I can see a lot of copies being sold on Ebay which are used. I used the 'Ask a question' option and the majority of the users are saying that i should be able to use it. If someone buys Windows 7 from the shop, installs it on his PC but then decides that he wants to sell it can he not sell it? Will the person buying it not be able to use it? Does the person selling it have to somehow unregister it first? What do i need to look out for if buying it from Ebay? Thanks

  • Linksys SFE2000 Interface

    I have a real problem with a layer 3 Linksys switch. First, every time it looses power, it seems to reset back to an older config. Not only this, but when this happens it looses interface settings on one subnet. This would not be a problem but I am completely unable to get to the interface on the working side. It allows me to log on and then just displays a blank screen. I have tried this on: IE6 IE7 IE8 IE9 Firefox 3.5 Opera Chrome All with the same results, except for Opera, which loads half the interface but nothing I can really use. I really need to get onto this switch so I can sort out routing and VLAN tagged ports, so if anyone has any ideas on either of these issues please let me know ASAP! Thanks! Also, due to its location and my lack of laptops with serial connections I cannot putty into it. UPDATE: Looked into this a bit more and it looks like this model of switch does not save the current config to boot unless you make sure to save it yourself, which explains the first issue, however the broken interface is more worrying!

    I need to write a firefox extension that creates a server socket (I think that's what it's called) and returns the browser's current url when a client application (running on the same computer) sends it a request. The thing is that I have no Java/Javascript background at all and I'm pressed for time so I am trying to hack something together from code samples. So far I've been mildly successful. Does it create security vulnerabilities on the computer? How can I block connections to the socket from other computers? What is a good place to read about javascript sockets? My google searches have been pretty fruitless but then maybe I'm not using the right keywords.
