  • Recommended book for Sql Server query optimisation

    - by Patrick Honorez
Even if I have made a certification exam on Sql Server Design and implementation , I have no clue about how to trace/debug/optimise performance in Sql Sever. Now the database I built is really business critical, and getting big, so it is time for me to dig into optimisation, specially regarding when/where to add indexes. Can you recommend a good book on this subject ? (smaller is better :) Just in case: I am using Sql Server 2008. Thanks

  • Data access layer using Linq to SQL

    - by Andrei Tanasescu
I am building a c# - linq - sql server winforms/asp.net application, accessing a database. I would like my business logic layer to be easily testable, and that means not littering it with Linq database queries everywhere. What design patterns/ best practices are available for the following use cases - inserting/updating a new object - searching for an object - loading a bunch of related data into a sort of "presentation" object that could be displayed by various views ?

  • How should I lay-out my PHP login class?

    - by ThinkingInBits
So, there is going to be one login form; however 1 of 3 types of members will be signing in member_type_a, member_type_b, member_type_c all of whom have some of the same properties, and some whom may have specific methods and/or properties to them. I want the class to be saved to a session variable for use with member area pages. Any suggestions on applicable design patterns?

  • Better way to find Class in event.target parentnodes using jquery and javascript?

    - by Cama
    Currently, I check the target of the input box keyup event to see if it is contained within a div wit class "editorRow" using: var $parentClass = event.target.parentNode.parentNode.parentNode.className; Is there a better way to do this in case extra markup is added between the div and the span tags? <div class="editorRow"> <li> <span class="wi1"> <input type="text" value="" style="width: 80px;" name="LineItems9" id="LineItems_9"> </span> </li> </div>   $("input").live("keyup", function(event) { return GiveDynamicFieldsLife(event); }); function GiveDynamicFieldsLife(event) { **var $parentClass = event.target.parentNode.parentNode.parentNode.className;** if ($parentClass == "editorRow") { //Do Stuff } }

  • A simple, clean web layout

    - by Shaun_web
Ok, so I hate CSS/HTML graphic design... What do you guys recommend as a sample template or website that you think has great CSS and html layout? From my past experience it's best to get a page that has a white background and little dependency on graphics -- that's clean, and easy to modify ;-).

  • How do I update the members of a MySQL SET Type?

    - by MachinationX
I have a table of values, with one of the columns being of type SET. If it currently has the members ('a', 'b', 'c', 'd'), how do I add 'e' to the possible values? I realize that using a SET type is a little strange, and I'm unclear why one would use it instead of a foreign key to another table with the values of the set, but I didn't design the database in question, and can't change it that much. Thanks for your help!

  • In web project can we write core services layer without knowledge of UI ?

    - by Silent Warrior
I am working on web project. We are using flex as UI layer. My question is often we are writing core service layer separately from web/UI layer so we can reuse same services for different UI layer/technology. So practically is it possible to reuse same core layer services without any changes/addition in API with different kind of UI technologies/layers. For e.g. same core service layer with UI technology which supports synchronized request response (e.g. jsp etc.) and non synchronize or event driven UI technology (e.g Ajax, Flex, GWT etc.) or with multiple devices like (computers, mobiles, pdas etc.). Personally I feel its very tough to write core service layer without any knowledge of UI. Looking for thoughts from other people.

    - by user186128

This is the page http://library.permilia.com/Gavin/version2.0_beta/lead.html It works on every browsers imaginable except chrome. By it works i mean it applies a class .error that sets the borders to 1px solid #f00 which is a red border. In chrome for some reason you cannot change it no matter what! Anybody got any ideas?

  • Do you employ any tools for managing technical debt?

    - by Phil.Wheeler
The site I work with on a day-to-day basis has its share of shortcomings and we often make design decisions to "get us by right now" with the intention of fixing those up later. I've found that making the time to actually go back and fix them, let alone remembering what the full list of to-do items is can be challenging at best. Can you recommend any tools, resources or tricks that help you effectively manage your technical debt?

  • Foreign keys - temporarily bypass?

    - by Industrial
Hi, I have just started to learn about the pros of foreign keys in database design (mySQL / innoDB) and I wonder if there's any way to temporarily bypass the foreign key when doing a specific delete query, to just delete in the parent table, and not from the linked child tables. Thanks

  • Metro apps crash on startup, driver or permissions issue?

    - by Vee
After installing Win8 x64 RC, Metro apps worked correctly, but desktop OpenGL apps were slow and unresponsive. I installed the latest Win8 nVidia drivers, and the OpenGL apps started working correctly. At the same time, because of annoying permission messages, I changed the C:\ drive and all its files ownerships to my user, and gave it full permission. I restarted my pc after installing the drivers, and now Metro apps only show the splash screen, then crash. I tried installing other versions of the nVidia drivers, with the same result. My GPU is a GeForce GTX275. Is this a known problem with nVidia drivers? Or maybe changing the ownership of C:\ is the real problem? Thank you. More information (after looking in the event viewer) I've managed to find the problem and the error in the Event Viewer. I still cannot solve it. Here's the information I found by opening the Mail app and letting it crash: Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational Source: Microsoft-Windows-Immersive-Shell Date: 07/06/2012 15.54.17 Event ID: 5961 Task Category: (5961) Level: Error Keywords: User: VEE-PC\Vittorio Computer: vee-pc Description: Activation of the app microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe!Microsoft.WindowsLive.Mail for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: The app didn't start..
