    Hi there In Android, I have some code to check whether the user has GPS switched on, and launch the Settings for them to turn it on if they don't. Often, when the user reopens the app, the Settings are at the front. How can I set them so they don't keep reappearing? I wonder if I should be using the CLEAR_TOP flag or something similar... I've tried looking at the docs for the Activity flags but find them a bit confusing. Anyone know?

  • Porting VB6 app to VB.Net: Can anyone ballpark how much effort this is?

    In 2002 I did a pretty large VB6 app for a client. It used a lot of UserControls and a 3rd party menu control (for putting icons next to menu names). It had dynamically "splittable" panels, TreeViews with multi-state checkboxes, etc. A very rich UI. My total time on the project was about 500 hours, which the client graciously let me spread over a whole month. (Yeah, it was that kind of job.) They were very happy, though, and they paid the bill on time with no argument. So after having no contact with them for years, they suddenly call and wonder if I can update the app to .Net for them. My initial reaction is just to decline, since I don't use VB.Net. And having read a bunch of posts on SO about the difficulties of porting, etc., etc., I'm even more inclined to decline, so to speak. Still, before I tell them no I am interested in roughly quantifying the effort it would take. I would love to hear from anyone who has done this kind of thing and has a feel for how much work it is. Was it: Significantly less than the effort you used on the original? Somewhat less than the effort you used on the original? The same as the effort you used on the original? More? A lot more? Please only respond if you have actually done this kind of port. And the answer doesn't have to be exact, since I really am only trying to ballpark this. My feeling is that the effort will be at least as much as it took for the original, if not more. But I could be wrong. Thanks for any help.

  • What is a good RPC model for building a AJAX web app using PHP & JS?

    I'm new to writing AJAX applications. I plan on using jQuery on the client side while PHP on the server side. I want to use something like XML-RPC to simplify my effort in calling server-side code. Ideally, I wouldn't care whether the transport layer uses XML or JSON or a format more optimized for the wire. If I was writing a console app I'd use some tool to generate function stubs which I would then implement on the RPC server while the client would natively call into those stubs. This provides a clean separation. Is there something similar available in the AJAX world? While on this topic, how would I proceed with session management? I would want it to be as transparent as possible. For example, if I try to hit an RPC end-point which needs a valid session, it should reject the request if the client doesn't pass a valid session cookie. This would really ease my application development. I'd then have to simply handle the frontend using native JS functions. While on the backend, I can simply implement the RPC functions. BTW I dont wish to use Google Web Toolkit. My app wont be extremely heavy on AJAX.

  • Custom class deallocated as soon as the app starts.

    Heya, I've added a class object to the nib file. All connections are made. But for some reason, the object is deallocated as soon as it's created.   • Can't create admin user on Heroku

    I am new to rails and I have gone through Kevin Skoglund's Ruby on Rails 3 Essential Training course on Lynda.com. Through the course you set up a simple cms, which I did. It doesn't cover Git or deployment but I've pushed my simple cms to github (https://github.com/nick5a1/Simple_CMS) and deployed to Heroku (http://nkarrasch.herokuapp.com/). In order to deploy to Heroku I followed the Heroku setup guide (https://devcenter.heroku.com/articles/rails3) and switched my database from MySQL to PostgreSQL. As instructed I changed gen'mysql2' to gen 'sqlite3' in my Gemfile and ran bundle install before pushing. I then ran heroku run rake db:migrate. I'm running into 2 problems. When I try to log in (http://nkarrasch.herokuapp.com/access) I get an error "We're sorry, but something went wrong". I should instead be getting a flash message with invalid username/password combination. This is what I'm getting on my test environment on my local machine. Secondly, when I log into the Heroku console to create and create an admin user, when I try to save that user I get the following error: irb(main):004:0> user.save (1.2ms) BEGIN AdminUser Exists (1.9ms) SELECT 1 AS one FROM "admin_users" WHERE "admin_users"."username" = 'Nick5a1' LIMIT 1 (1.7ms) ROLLBACK => false Any advice on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated :).   • Apache sends plain-text response when accessing SSL-enabled site without HTTPS

    I've never encountered something such as this before. I was attempting to simply redirect the page to the HTTPS version if it determined that HTTPS was off, but instead it's displaying an HTML page rather than actually redirecting; and even odder, it's displaying it as text/plain!   • cannot send mail to postfix /w iptables linux proxy

    I have two separate servers, both running Ubuntu 8.04. Server 1 has the real domain name of our site, let's refer to it as example.com. Server 2 is a mail server I have setup with postfix/courier. The hostname for this server is mail.example.com. I've setup iptables on Server 1 to forward all traffic on port 25 to Server 2. I used this script (except I changed the target ip address and the port from 80 to 25). When I send an email to user@mail.example.com it works. However, when I try to send an email to [email protected] from gmail, I get this error: 550 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected [email protected] (state 14) /var/log/mail.log shows no new lines when this happens. What is strange is that it works with telnet from my local machine.     I have two separate servers, both running Ubuntu 8.04. Server 1 has the real domain name of our site, let's refer to it as example.com. Server 2 is a mail server I have setup with postfix/courier. The hostname for this server is mail.example.com. I've setup iptables on Server 1 to forward all traffic on port 25 to Server 2. I used this script (except I changed the target ip address and the port from 80 to 25). When I send an email to user@mail.example.com it works. However, when I try to send an email to [email protected] from gmail, I get this error: 550 550 #5.1.0 Address rejected [email protected] (state 14) /var/log/mail.log shows no new lines when this happens. What is strange is that it works with telnet from my local machine.     I have a custom layout installed (svdvorak_mac6.keylayout). After a reboot another keyboard layout was selected, so I selected my usual one instead. This lead to a lot of apps suddenly starting to crash (Chrome, Skype, Adium etc). I can change to any other built in layout for OS X, but as soon as I choose one custom installed one (either form ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ or from /Library/Keyboard Layouts/) the apps crash. The only thing I can remember that I did before the reboot was to install Google's video chat plugin for the browser.     I've followed this guide to get postfix set up. I've not completed it yet, as from sending test emails, email is no longer being delivered since switching to Maildir from mbox.   • How is incoming SMTP mail being delivered despite blocked port

    I setup a MX mail server, everything works despite port 25 being blocked, I'm stumped as to why I am able to receive email with this setup, and what the consequences might be if I leave it this way. Here are the details: Connections to SMTP over port 25 and 587 both reliably connect over my local network. Connections to SMTP over port 25 are blocked from external IPs (the ISP is blocking the port). Connections to Submission SMTP over port 587 from external IPs are reliable. Emails sent from gmail, yahoo, and a few other addresses all are being delivered. I haven't found an email provider that fails to deliver mail to my MX. So, with port 25 blocked, I am assuming other MTA servers fallback to port 587, otherwise I can't imagine how the mail is received. I know port 25 shouldn't be blocked, but so far it works. Are there mail servers that this will not work with? Where can I find more about how this is working? -- edit More technical detail, to validate that I'm not missing something silly. Seeing this leads me to hypothesize that the ISP block on port 25 only occurs when a connection is made from an IP address that is not known to be a mail server. Any other theories?

  • Exchange 2010 Internal Auto Discover Migrate away from current .local DNS name

    We have an Exchange 2010 Server, running within our Active Directory domain, with an internal hostname of server.example.local. The server is configured for Exchange anywhere, but currently has a self signed certificate with a name of server.example.local installed. Internally, clients connect and work fine, but externally, we are having certificate errors as you would expect. I'm about to purchase a UCC SSL Certificate to install on the server with all the relevant SANs on the certificate to correct this, but due to obvious problem obtaining a trusted cert with .local as a subject alternative name, I'm looking to configure clients on the internal network so that they don't use any reference to the .local hostname. I've configured our external DNS name for the server as exchange.example.com, and have created an CNAME for autodiscover.example.com which also (correctly) points to exchange.example.com. I've also configured internal DNS records for these two hostnames which point to the internal interface of the same server. I don't anticipate any problems here. I'm now trying to reconfigure Auto Discover internally, so that Outlook attempts to connect to exchange.example.com. I've followed the steps in KB940726 to prepare for this, and this appeared to work fine. No errors were generated and I was able to verify the CAS name in AD using ADSI edit. I've just tried testing this with a newly created test user account complete with a new Exchange mailbox, and Outlook 2007 connects fine on the internal network, but looking deeper in the Exchange profile, Outlook is still resolving the server name as server.example.local. Could it be the self signed cert, that is causing Outlook to display the server name as server.example.local, or is there still something wrong with my internal autodiscover configuration? Edit I've proven it isn't the certificate that is responsible for outlook returning server.example.local, by installing another self certified certificate with a name of test.example.com. When creating a new outlook profile, I get the mismatch error I'm expceting, but after accepting the cert, and finishing the config of the Outlook profile, again it still shows server.example.local as the server name. This means that if I were to purchase the UCC cert now, that external client would work fine, but internal clients would show a certificate name mismatch. Any ideas where to start diagnosing this?

  • Local dns for testing websites using mobile devices

    Hi. I have no idea where to start from so sorry in advance if this topic has already been discussed. I usually develop web sites using my laptop as a development server, and recently I needed to test a web site using various mobile devices that can connect via wifi. Having no real AP, I set up a ad-hoc network using my laptop's wireless card and the devices can correctly browse the Internet and access the laptop's web server. The setup is as follows: subnet: 192.168.1.0/24 gateway to the Internet (wired adsl router/modem): 192.168.1.1 laptop: 192.168.1.64 (eth0, wired if connected to the gateway) and 192.168.1.32 (eth1, wifi if somewhat bridged to eth0) mobile devices (same for all, I only use one of them at any time for simplicity): 192.168.1.11 with default gw 192.168.1.1 Now, if I open either 192.168.1.32 or 192.168.1.64 from the mobile devices, I correctly get the default host of my Apache configuration. However I usually work with virtual hosts for many practical reasons, one of which being Drupal's peculiar implementation of multi-sites. For those who don't know how this works, Drupal takes the request's hostname and searches into its sites/ subdirectories for an appropriate configuration file. So, for example, suppose I request www.example.com, then Drupal would search for a config file in the following directories: sites/www.example.com/ sites/example.com/ sites/com/ sites/default/ So I decided to adopt the following style of virtual hosts: if the website I'm working on will be accessible using www.example.com I set up a sites/www.example.com/ directory and create a virtual host for local.www.example.com so Drupal have no trouble finding it. I've been told this is suboptimal from a dns point of view since I'd have to create an authoritative entry for example.com and turn Bind on only when I'm supposed to access the local copy, which is weird. However, if this is the only path I can follow, I still have some problems with Bind's configuration, as I couldn't find any guide that tells me in a clear, noob-friendly way, how to set up such an entry. On the other hand, I was wondering if I could set up an authoritative entry for local, so I could access www.example.com.local and tell in some way (which I don't even know if this is possible) Apache to put www.example.com instead of www.example.com.local in the relevant environment variable. Anyway, I have a last problem, sort of: when I launch Bind in debug mode with high verbosity, and make 192.168.1.32 as the primary dns for the devices, the output doesn't say anything about requests being made from the devices to Bind, so I'm not even sure it comes into play. As you can see, I'm a complete noob at these matters, but I'm eager to learn, so any help/pointer will be appreciated.

  • Using MPMoviePlayerViewController full screen in iPad app that's not fully ported from iPad...yet.

    I have an iPhone app that launched the good old MPMoviePlayerController with a movie file. I changed it to a MPMoviePlayerViewController and used presentMoviePlayerViewControllerAnimated to get the movie to play on the iPad. It looks awful with the 2x sized controls. Can this be coded in such a way that it will look good regardless of which device? This is just an intermediate thing, but I need to get it going quickly. Thanks for any pointers.

  • Why is there a black bar on top of my iPhone/iPad app when I run it on the iPhone simulator?

    Whenever I run my iPhone / iPad app in the iPhone simulator, a black bar appears along the top of the screen which I can't seem to get rid of. On the iPad simulator, however, it looks fine and works great. Also tapping one of the buttons seems to cause a white screen to appear instead of the view on the iPhone, while on the iPad it doesn't seem to be troublesome. Thanks, Anthony Glyadchenko

However, my project already came with an nasty MainWindow.xib file ;-) so I find it hard to do that now, since that nib guy is creating the window. Is there any way I can get rid of this MainWindow.xib? Or is there another way to have an subclass of UIWindow in place?
