• Hex representation of Euro Symbol €

  Hi I was using XVI32 (Hex Editor) to get the hex representation of the Euro symbol and it gives me the value as 80. Another site: http://www.string-functions.com/string-hex.aspx does the same. I am not able to understand why the hex representation is 80 instead of 0x20AC. This 0X80 gives 128 in decimal and if I use Alt+0128 it actually produces the Euro symbol. Could somebody throw some light on what could be the logic behind this conversion from string to hex conversion ? Thanks

• onload Event in embedded SVG not calling function in attached script. Scope Issue?

  Hi So I've got an XHTML page with a script - not inline > <script type="text/javascript" > src="../global/js/scripts.js"></script> and an embedded (I tried embed and object, same behavior) SVG document with a onload="CheckIfLoaded(evt)" attribute. The problem is firefox doesn't call the CheckIfLoaded() function in scripts.js. Firebug gives me "CheckIfLoaded() is not defined" with no reference to any line numbers. I can't find any information regarding the scope of javascript functions with respect to embedded content. Curiously, it works fine in IE. I could of course add a reference to the script into the SVG file as well but I believe that will result in the client downloading the scripts file twice and in addition I have 1000+ svg files and I'd really rather not add one line to all of them, although I suppose I could write a batch file or whatever if I have to. • What does "Unatuthorized zone" mean when browsing xsd files with Visual Studio 2010?

  When I open up an xsd file that includes other xsd files, all of the included files are added to a section called "Unauthorized zone". Visual Studio highlights the element and gives the following error when trying to resolve the schemaLocation attribute: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.FileIOPermission, mscorlib, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I've read the following blog post, but I'm not familiar enough with xsd yet to fully understand it. Can anyone explain why this is happening or point me to a good resource that can help?

  Alright, say I have this: <select id='list'> <option value='1'>Option A</option> <option value='2'>Option B</option> <option value='3'>Option C</option> </select> What would the selector look like if I wanted to get "Option B" when I have the value '2'. Please note that this is not asking how to get the selected text value, but just any one of them, whether selected or not, depending on the value attribute. I tried: $("#list[value='2']").text(); But it is not working.

• prevent the designer from calling a getter (VS 2008, WinForms)

  hi, I have a simple UserControl containing a ComboBox which is empty at first. The setter for that CB adds items to it and the getter returns the selected item. When adding this UC to a Form, the designer automatically calls the getter for the CB which is empty. The method to fill up the CB with items is called later. I can think of one or two ways to bypass this problem by "messing around" in the code. But before I start that I'd like to ask you if there is a way to stop the designer from calling the getter method. Maybe with a attribute similar to Browsable or Bindable? thx

• Using normalize-string XPath function from SQL XML query ?

  Hi, is it possible to run an SQL query, with an XPath "where" clause, and to trim trailing spaces before the comparison ? I have an SQL XML column, in which I have XML nodes with attributes which contain trailing spaces. I would like to find a given record, which has a specified attribute value - without the trailing spaces. When I try, I get... "There is no function '{http://www.w3.org/2004/07/xpath-functions}:normalize-space()'" I have tried the following (query 1 works, query 2 doesn't). • Different sidebars for each Wordpress page

  I'm making a Wordpress 2.9.2 theme, and I'd like each page to have its own sidebar than can be edited as easily as the page's content. It would be cumbersome to make a different template file for each sidebar. It would also be weird to add a "custom field" containing all the sidebar text, since I wouldn't be able to use the Visual/HTML editor. What I'd like is to have a tag similar to the tag, but instead of delimiting the content to be shown on the front page, it would split the post's content and sidebar. Is this possible? Or is there a better solution?

But i get Row Unavailable exception - is my approach wrong? any suggestions?

  Does anyone know if there is an equilant attribute of SVG's "gradientUnits=userSpaceOnUse" in WPF for a LinearGradientBrush? I can't seem to find this. If not, does anyone know about how to calculate it in (C# or VB.NET)? For example if I have a StartPoint of 0,0 and EndPoint of 1,1 on a Rectangle that is 100x100, the angle is 45 degrees. However, when I change either the width or height of the Rectangle, for example Width=150, the axis is no longer at 45 degrees. How could I calculate to keep the angle at 45 degrees in a rectangle that is not a square so that it runs from bottom left to top right corner for a middle gradientstop.

• Silverlight 4 RichTextBox - can't restore Xaml with text containing curly braces

  We have a Silverlight application using the RichTextBox as a rich text editor for the user to create emails. We actually have our own serializer but essentially we are saving and restoring the Xaml. As far as I can tell it is impossible to restore any text containing curly braces. You can demonstrate this fairly easily by creating a RichTextBox and typing something similar to "{weird}" into it. Then take the .Xaml property of the textbox and set it on the .Xaml property of another textbox - kablooie. As we have our own serializer I have tried escaping the Text member of the Run elements with "". This makes no difference. I've tried replacing the braces with &#123; but that doesn't work either.

• Microsoft.Office.Interop.MSProject - why are my files always locked (by me!) when I try to open them

  Hi all, I'm trying to use Interop to manipulate MS Project 2003 (MPP) files. My problem is that MS Project reports that the files is already opened by another user (me!) and that I can open it only as read-only. Obviously, I've tried to restart studio, then windows (xp) but with no effect. The file attribute for Readonly is cleared on the file. Any suggestions for what I might try?! • Giving Zend Navigation Pages Multiple ACL Privileges

  I'm using Zend_Navigation and am trying to integrate it with Zend_Acl. Each page in the navigation has a privilege attribute. What I can't determine is how to define multiple privileges for a single page. Use case: A page that is for managing users. I want to display that page (in navigation) if the current signed in user's role has add, edit, or delete privileges on the Users resource. Example entry in the navigation XML: <admin_users> <label>Users</label> <route>default</route> <controller>admin</controller> <action>users</action> <resource>Users</resource> <privilege>add,edit,delete</privilege> </admin_users> Using a comma-separated list as above doesn't lend the desired behavior.

• Visual Studio Package for 2005/2008/2010 ??

  We are looking to turn an internal tool we have developed into a Visual Studio Package that we would sell to other developers. The tool will impact the custom editor and/or custom languages. Visual Studio 2010 has redesigned the API's heavily to simplify much of the work involved for these types of integration but the key question we have is: What is the typical adoption pace of new Visual Studio versions? Is there any information out there on adoption rates based on history? How many shops are still using 2005? This will help us to consider whether to target just 2010 using the new APIs or whether trying to go back and support 2008 (maybe 2005) and testing it forward.

• How can I Unescape and Reescape strings in .net?

  So here's my situation. I am working on an editor for a communications channel that works over an RS232 serial ASCII terminal. Let's not go into detail for that ;-) To simplify, I need a textbox on a WPF control that can take in text like "Commit\r\n" (which is the .net string "Commit\r\n") and convert it back to "Commit\r\n" as a .net string. I was hoping for a string.Unescape() and string.Escape() method pair, but it doesn't seem to exist. Am I going to have to write my own? or is there a more simple way to do this?

• Customize VisualStudio syntax highlighting even more

  Hi everybody, I am wondering if it is possible to set VisualStudio IDE so it highlights private/protected/public variables of the class differently as well as change formatting on locals (i.e. variables that are either passed in or declared inside a function, like this). I did not find any such options in the normal Fonts and Colors menu of VS. Also a search on SO reveals that (at least as of 2 years ago) only add-ons provide such features. But is there a way to manually edit some file? Just because we don't get a nice UI to edit, doesn't mean underlying framework automatically doesn't support it. I mean add-ons have to plug into something to do their magic in the editor. Any insights into this issue? Thanks!

• VS 2010 very slow

  I have just upgraded to VS 2010, and I have performance problems which I did not have before (in VS 2008). The most annoying thing is that it freezes while I work in the text editor. Sometimes when it freezes I see that it is saving auto recovery information, but not always. Almost anything I do gives an unacceptable long delay, like saving, starting to debug, ending debug session, switching between design and code view, and doing WinForms designing. I have some parts of my home directory on a mapped network drive. I suspect that that might be a part of the problem. Is it possible to configure VS 2010 to use exclusively local disk for its "internal" work perhaps? Any hints would be appreciated! Has anyone else experienced these kinds of problems?

• Mocking User.Identity in ASP.NET MVC

  I need to create Unit Tests for an ASP.NET MVC 2.0 web site. The site uses Windows Authentication. I've been reading up on the necessity to mock the HTTP context for code that deals with the HttpContext. I feel like I'm starting to get a handle on the DI pattern as well. (Give the class an attribute of type IRepository and then pass in a Repository object when you instantiate the controller.) What I don't understand, however, is the proper way to Mock the Windows Principal object available through User.Identity. Is this part of the HttpContext? • How does a debug build make reverse engineering easy?

  Some answer here stated that debug info would make it easier to reverse engineer the software. When I use Visual C++ and distribute an executable with debugging information but without other files (.pdb), will it contain any interesting things? I looked to the executable with a hex editor and found nothing like symbol names, for now I assume the .exe file just links to information in the .pdb files, right? Do you know whether it contains variable names? function/member names? line numbers? anything interesting? Thanks!

• How to Maintain per-Client State in a WCF Service?

  I've created a WCF service in which I would like it to maintain state between calls from the client. I figured the easiest way to do this was to add this attribute to the service: [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.PerSession)] since this is supposed to keep a separate service alive for each client over the life of the client proxy (or timeout in the extreme case). I also added a test function that tracks a list of user inputs, and spits out a concatenated string with all the inputs over the life of the service. When I run this in the test client generated by visual studio, I find that the list I was using to hold past data is reset with each call. Is there something else I need to do to maintain state per session?

• PHP File unreadable after being downloaded

  Hi I have a script that creates a file and stores it on the server. The file is encoded in UTF-8 and is a kind of xml file for the cmap software. If i open the file directly from the server then there is no problem and the file can be read. I am forcing a download of this file when a user goes to a specific url. After such a download, the file is unreadable by the cmap software. I have to go into my text editor (notepad++) and change the encoding from UTF-8 to UTF-8 without BOM. Am I sending the wrong headers? Is php doing something to the file when it is downloading it? Any advice on this would really be appreciated. Cheers Drew
