  • Is passing a Command object/Reader to a function a good idea?

    I've been getting some inexplicable errors (running out of connections from the connection pool) with MySql database with .Net 4 (C#). Till now all my attempts at finding a reason for this have been in vain. Now I also have a situation in which a lock on a table is not cleared for a long time even though all I have been doing is read operations from it. My code looks okay (I've put all readers and connections in using blocks). The only anomaly I have is that I've been passing MySqlCommand and MySqlDataReader objects as parameters to functions who work with them. That doesn't seem like a bad idea for me because it avoids some repetition (DRY!). But since I can't find any other explanation I have to suspect that this is causing the problem. What do you think?

  • How to run lengthy tasks from an ASP.NET page?

    I've got an ASP.NET page with a simple form. The user fills out the form with some details, uploads a document, and some processing of the file then needs to happens on the server side. My question is - what's the best approach to handling the server side processing of the files? The processing involves calling an exe. Should I use seperate threads for this? Ideally I want the user to submit the form without the web page just hanging there while the processing takes place.   • Getting code-first Entity Framework to build tables on SQL Azure

    I am new the code-first Entity Framework. I have tried a few things now, but can't get EF to construct any tables in the my SQL Azure database. Can anyone advise of some steps and settings I should check. The membership provider has no problems create it's tables. I have added the PersistSecurityInfo=True in the connection string. The connection string is using the main user account for the server. When I implement the tables in the database using sql everything works fine.   • MVC2 Json request not actually hitting the controller

    I have a JSON request, but it seems that it is not hitting the controller. Each webpage does not lose the contents and data while moving between pages, postbacks, etc. Here is the website design and my idea: [Master Page] "Fruits" "Cars" "Animals" "Operators" clicking on "Fruits" will forwards to "Fruits" page, and the same for other links (tabs) The user works on "Fruits" page searching fruits, fill up some fields, etc. The user then moves to "Cars" page and then builds up his own car by filling some fields, etc and then the user goes back to "Fruits" page again - the user sees the same page where she/he left on "Fruits" page. Please suggest some good ways other than using javascript:history.go(-1). Is this possible to implement?

  • Get controller method caller (3rd party webservice)

    Is it possible to retrieve the URL of a 3rd party webservice calling my controller method? Things like Request.Current.Url refer to my own URL (/someController/someAction/). The 3rd party webservice is sending HTTP POST data to my /someController/someAction and I wish to send back a HTTP POST message to the caller of the method, the 3rd party webservice, without using return Content["some response"] which will force me to exit the method. Since the answer is plain text I would like to send it using HTTP Post. What I actually try to do is respond to the calling webservice without exiting my method (return Content() will exit) so I can call other methods to process the data send to me by the webservice. I want to first tell the webservice I received their stuff and than process, in this way when a processing error occurs the webservice at least will not resend old data. Is there another way to do this than building your own HTTP post?

Suppose that my website is xyz.com and I have 3 clients "abc", "klm", "pqr" and I want to give access to features of xyz.com under the link as follows www.xyz.com/abc www.xyz.com/klm www.xyz.com/pqr and Client abc has N users and I want to set 3 roles for every client's user role. Is there any sample application in .NET that support this kind of website access per client having multiple users? And If I use ASP.NET Membership will that be a suitable membership solution or Do I need to opt for any other type of Membership defined by my own or already available in open source market for .NET. Edit: All the clients will have same functionality. I would like to build a generic model for www.xyz.com/{whatever} so that in future if a new client want to register with me he/she just have to give client name and up on adding client name all the features avaiable to exising clients will be applicable.

  • Using multiple databases within one application

    I have a web application made for several groups of people not connected with each other. Instead of using one database for all of them, I'm thinking about making separate databases. This will improve the speed of the queries and make me free from checking to what group the user belongs. But since I'm working with LINQ to SQL, my classes are explicitly connected with the databases, so I will have to make separate DataContexts for all of the databases. So how can I solve this problem? Or should I just not bother and use one database only?

    For example: if I am retrieving User.Identity.Name, does it come from .ASPXAUTH cookie or is retrieved from the database using my membership provider? Are any database requests made when I access User.Identity? Thanks. EDIT: Right now I am pretty sure it comes from an authentication ticket cookie, but can't find any official documentation to confirm this. Anyone?

    Hi A default value of 0 is creeping into a Surveys app I am developing, for no reason that I can see. The problem is as follows: I have a group of Html.RadioButtons that represent the possible values a user can choose to answer a survey question (1 == Not at all, 2 == A little, 3 == A lot). I have used a tinyint datatype, that does not allow null, to store the answer to each question. The view code looks like this: <ol class="SurveyQuestions"> <% foreach (SurveyQuestion question in Model.Questions) { string col = question.QuestionColumn; %> <li><%=question.QuestionText%> <ul style="float:right;" class="MultiChoice"> <li><%= Html.RadioButton(col, "1")%></li> <li><%= Html.RadioButton(col, "2")%></li> <li><%= Html.RadioButton(col, "3")%></li> </ul> <%= Html.ValidationMessage(col, "*") %> </li> <% } %> </ol> [Note on the above code:] Each survey has about 70 questions, so I have put the questions text in one table, and store the results in a different table. I have put the Questions into my form view model (hence Model.Questions); the questions table has a field called QuestionColumn that allows me to link up the answer table column to the question, as shown above (<%= Html.RadioButton(col, "1")%, etc) [/Note] However, when the user DOESN'T answer the question, the value 0 is getting inserted into the database column. As a result, I don't get what I expect, ie, a validation error. In no place have I stipulated a default value of 0 for the fields in the answers table. So what is happening? Any ideas?

I'm getting a simple string array back from the server and creating a select with the strings as options. The static fields on the form are validating fine.     I have a MVC3 application in which i want to set a timespan to for example 2 days and 5 hours. when i enter 02:05:00:00 it gives me the following exception: System.OverflowException: SqlDbType.Time overflow. Value '2.05:00:00' is out of range. Must be between 00:00:00.0000000 and 23:59:59.9999999. When i enter 05:00:00 it correctly saves 5 hours into the database. according to MSDN timespan has a property for days. How do i correctly set the days? Model: public class ProductionTimeVM { [Required] public TimeSpan DefaultTime { get; set; } } In my view i just use: @Html.TextBoxFor(x => x.DefaultTime) For my controller: public ActionResult SaveProductionTime(ProductionTimeVM vm) { ProductionTime productionTime = new ProductionTime(); productionTime.Default = vm.DefaultTime; //some more code } Any idea's?
