• How do you deal with poor management [closed]

  I come from a company where during a project, we saw the client 3 time during the whole project. We were never informed when did the client came in office in order to discuss with him about his requirements. I did setup redmine and told them that if they have any request they can post an issue there. But they never really used redmine to publish anything. They would instead: harass a team member on the phone at any time of the day or night hand us over sheets of paper with new requests or changes hand us over new design (graphical) They requested how much time it would take us to finish the project, I gave them a date and a week to test everything and deployment. I calculated that time taking into account the current features we had to do. And then blamed us that our deadline was wrong and that we lied. But the truth is that one week before that deadline they added a couple of monster feature from nowhere and that week were we were supposed to test and deploy, my friends spent all day in the office changing all little things. After that project, my friend got some kind of depression and got scared everytime his phone rang. They kind of used him as a communication proxy. After that project of hell, (every body got pissed off on that project) as far as I know the designer who was working with us left work after that project and she had some kind of issue too with managers. My team also started looking for work somewhere else. At first I tried to get things straight with management, I tried to make a meeting to discuss about the communication issues and so on.. What really pissed me off and made me leave that job for good is the following. Me: "We have to discuss about what went wrong on the last project. It's quite important" Him: "Lets talk about it in a week or two. Just make a list of all the things you did wrong" Me: "We already have a new project and we want to prevent what happened on the last project to happen again" Him: "Just do it and well have our meeting in a week, make a list of all the thing you did wrong." It kind of ended there then he organized a meeting at a moment I wasn't unable to come. My friend discussed with him and tried to explained him that we really had to discuss about organization issue on how to manage a project. And his answer was pretty much: "During the meeting I don't want to ear how you want to us to manage a project but I want to know what you guys did wrong" After that I felt it wasn't even worth it discussing anything since they weren't even ready listening to us. Found a new job and I'm pretty happy with my choice. I'd like to know how you'd handle such situation. Is there anything to do to solve communication problem? After that project my friend got a depression and some other employee had their down too as far as I know. I wonder what else we can do other than leave these place as soon as possible. Feel sad for the people that are still there and get screamed at just because they need money in order to eat and finding an other job like that isn't that easy. note I died a little when our boss asked us to make a list of things we (programmers) did wrong. This is probably the stupidest request I ever got. If everybody thinks they did everything right, it doesn't mean that there is no problems. Individual problem are rarely the big issue. Colleagues help each others and solve theses issues to prevent problems.

• Building a Repository Pattern against an EF 5 EDMX Model - Part 1

  I am part of a year long plus project that is re-writing an existing application for a client.  We have decided to develop the project using Visual Studio 2012 and .NET 4.5.  The project will be using a number of technologies and patterns to include Entity Framework 5, WCF Services, and WPF for the client UI.This is my attempt at documenting some of the successes and failures that I will be coming across in the development of the application.In building the data access layer we have to access a database that has already been designed by a dedicated dba. The dba insists on using Stored Procedures which has made the use of EF a little more difficult.  He will not allow direct table access but we did manage to get him to allow us to use Views.  Since EF 5 does not have good support to do Code First with Stored Procedures, my option was to create a model (EDMX) against the existing database views.   I then had to go select each entity and map the Insert/Update/Delete functions to their respective stored procedure. • Problem in udp socket programing in c

  I complile the following C code of UDP client after I run './udpclient localhost 9191' in terminal.I put "Enter Text= " as Hello, but it is showing error in sendto as below: Enter text: hello hello : error in sendto()guest-1SDRJ2@md-K42F:~/Desktop$ " Note: I open 1st the server port as below in other terminal ./server 9191. • c# WinForms ReportViewer Performance issue using RefreshReport() and ServerReport.SetParameters()

  Hi All, Currently I am writing a c# client application that uses the WinForms ReportViewer Control to display reports from a remote server. I am having performance troubles with the ReportViewer Control, to be specific with the 2 methods reportViewer.ServerReport.SetParameters() and reportViewer.RefreshReport() – they both take a really long time to complete and not just on the very first call, but on each subsequent call as well. SetParameters() takes 20 to 40 seconds (they vary greatly in time, some execute event okay fast) and RefreshReport() is a bit faster but still takes ages. I don’t think the server is the culprit, as the same report viewed using the browser renders pretty fast, about a second tops. The report in question doesn't matter as well. When I break into the process and take a look at the call stack, I see a call to Socket.DoConnect. So I thought that’s a good reason to start using fiddler and I installed it, disabled caching and fired up the app again to see which call takes that long to connect, but the performance issue was gone. By using a proxy I am having the same performance as the webbrowser. FYI: I am using NTLM authentication in the following way: reportViewer.ServerReport.ReportServerCredentials.NetworkCredentials = new NetworkCredentials() { Username = ... } I don’t have a strong webbackground, so I guess my question is: What should this tell me / What should I be looking into? (Btw: Adding fiddler to my installation package is not the solution I am looking for :)) I am grateful for any pointers. Take care, -Martin

• Maven error: Unable to get resource / Server redirected too many times

  Our proxy went down and I tried to update dependencies with maven while it was off. Since then I can't download anything with maven. I get this error for everything. I tried -U option, deleting my local repository and tried different maven version (2.0.9, 2.2.1) but it doesn't work. Any idea how to solve this? Earlier it also said 'repository will be blacklisted' to all of them. • Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

  I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered.   Hi I am trying to scrape other people web pages (for the forces of good not evil). I am currently trying to do this with javascript/jquery from with in a browser. I am finding that the no data is returned from the jquery.get() success call back function. My code. $.get('http://www.google.co.uk/', function (data, textStatus, XMLHttpRequest){ alert("status " + textStatus); alert('data:' + data); window.data=data; window.textStatus=textStatus; window.httpReq = XMLHttpRequest}); In my mind this should simply do a get on google store the data in window.data and we are all good. What happens is we get textStatus == success and data == "". the status on the XMLHttpRequest is 4(success). I have looked at the network traffic using a transparent proxy (Charles) and everything looks find there http status 200 plenty of data being returned. I am running this just from the Firebug console in Firefox. Any ideas?

  I am using Ext.data.Store to call a PHP script which returns a JSON response with some metadata about fields that will be used in a query (unique name, table, field, and user-friendly title). I then loop through each of the Ext.data.Record objects, placing the data I need into an array (this_column), push that array onto the end of another array (columns), and eventually pass this to an Ext.grid.ColumnModel object. The problem I am having is - no matter which query I am testing against (I have a number of them, varying in size and complexity), the columns array always works as expected up to columns[15]. At columns[16], all indexes from that point and previous are filled with the value of columns[15]. This behavior continues until the loop reaches the end of the Ext.data.Store object, when the entire arrays consists of the same value. My bean dependencies are currently injected by using the @Autowired annotation on private member fields. I have considered using ReflectionTestUtils.setField but the bean instance that I wish to inject is actually a proxy and hence does not declare the private member fields of the target class. I do not wish to create a public setter to the dependency as I will then be modifying my interface purely for the purposes of testing. • Static IP for dynamic IP

  I have a dynamic IP address. I would like to have a static IP, but Virgin Media don't allow static IPs for residential broadband services, even if you ask them really nicely and offer to pay for it without switching to a business tariff. I am already registered with a dynamic DNS service which is updated by my router eg me.example.com will always resolve to my dynamic IP. This is fine for some circumstances, but not if you can only enter an IP address into configuration files/hardware etc like firewalls, subversion services etc etc. Is there a way I can have a static IP address 'forwarding' to my dynamic IP? Would a possible solution involve tunnelling? Setting up a private proxy? Please note the following: I am able to buy an IP address from my web host. I have access to a webserver and I am able to create custom DNS zones. I'm happy to have a webserver running at home if necessary also. I do not wish to change broadband providers. I have zero control over the services that require the IP address entering so I cannot tackle the problem that way round (services I need to access are at work). PS I've tried googling this issue, but it is very difficult to search for as most results are related to dynamic dns (which I already have set up and isnt quite what I'm after)

• C# Thread Pool Cross-Thread Communication

  The Scenario I have a windows forms application containing a MAINFORM with a listbox on it. The MAINFORM also has a THREAD POOL that creates new threads and fires them off to do lots of different bits of processing. Whilst each of these different worker threads is doing its job, I want to report this progress back to my MAINFORM, however, I can't because it requires Cross-Thread communication. Progress So far all of the tutorials etc. that I have seen relating to this topic involve custom(ish) threading implementations, whereas I literally have a fairly basic(ish) standard THREAD POOL implementation. Since I don't want to really modify any of my code (since the application runs like a beast with no quarms) - I'm after some advice as to how I can go about doing this cross-thread communication. ALTERNATIVELY - How to implement a different "LOGTOSCREEN" method altogether (obviously still bearing in mind the cross-thread communication thing). WARNING: I use this website at work, where we are locked down to IE6 only, and the javascript thus fails, meaning I cannot click accept on any answers during work, and thus my acceptance rate is low. I can't do anything about it I'm afraid, sorry. EDIT: I DO NOT HAVE INSTALL RIGHTS ON MY COMPUTER AT WORK. I do have firefox but the proxy at work fails when using this site on firefox.   Hi guys, I'm feeling completely stupid because I've spent two hours solving task which should be very simple and which I solved many times before. But now I'm not even sure in which direction to dig. I fail to fetch static content using ajax from local servers (Apache and Mongrel). I get responses 200 and 206 (depending on the server), empty response text (although Content-Length header is always correct), firebug shows request in red. Javascript is very generic, I'm getting same results even here: http://www.w3schools.com/ajax/tryit.asp?filename=tryajax_first (just change document location to 'http://localhost:3000/whatever') So, it's probably not the cause. Well, now I'm out of ideas. I can also post http headers, if it'll help. Thanks! • Weird certificate error when trying to generate web service client from secure site

  Dear stack overflow. I get a weird error when trying to use AXIS1.4 Wsdl2Java tool to generate client code for the web service that is installed on the secure IIS site. I have another web server with the identical set-up and everything works fine there. I triple checked all the keystores and it looks like all the CA certificates are loaded correctly. I tried using another server with the identical setup, and was able to generate the client proxy code without any problems. Weird thing is that if I use the code generated from the other server against the weird server everything works fine. It is only Wsdl2Java that is giving me a problem.

• Apache Commons Net FTPClient retrievefile method issue with Sterling Commerce Connect

  Hi All, We have been using apache commons net FTP classes to connect using a proxy to a Sterling commerce FTP gateway located outside our network to pull files. We do not list the files since we know the name of the file to be pulled so we pull it directly using the below method. boolean isTransferred = ftp.retrieveFile(remoteFileName, outputFile); It was working since 3 years and we have been facing issues since last 2 weeks. The error occurs at above line and is org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPConnectionClosedException: FTP response 421 received. Server closed connection. org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTP.__getReply(FTP.java:347) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTP.sendCommand(FTP.java:450) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTP.sendCommand(FTP.java:478) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPClient.openDataConnection(FTPClient.java:476) org.apache.commons.net.ftp.FTPClient.retrieveFile(FTPClient.java:1228) We are facing these issues intermittently since last 2 weeks and not sure what could be the root cause of it. • Django: Unicode Filenames with ASCII headers?

  I have a list of strangely encoded files: 02 - Charlie, Woody and You/Study #22.mp3 which I suppose isn't so bad but there are a few particular characters which Django OR nginx seem to be snagging on. >>> test = u'02 - Charlie, Woody and You/Study #22.mp3' >>> test u'02 - Charlie, Woody and You\uff0fStudy #22.mp3' I am using nginx as a reverse proxy to connect to django's built in webserver (still in development stages) and postgresql for my database. My database and tables are all en_US.UTF-8 and I am using pgadmin3 to view my tables outside of django. My issue goes a little beyond my title, firstly how should I be saving possibly whacky filenames in my database? My current method is 'path': smart_unicode(path.lstrip(MUSIC_PATH)), 'filename': smart_unicode(file) and when I pprint out the values they do show u'whateverthecrap' I am not sure if that is how I should be doing it but assuming it is now I have issues trying to spit out the download. My download view looks something like this: def song_download(request, song_id): song = get_object_or_404(Song, pk=song_id) url = u'/static_music/%s/%s' % (song.path, song.filename) print url response = HttpResponse() response['X-Accel-Redirect'] = url response['Content-Type'] = 'audio/mpeg' response['Content-Disposition'] = "attachment; filename=test.mp3" return response and most files will download but when I get to 02 - Charlie, Woody and You/Study #22.mp3 I receive this from django: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\uff0f' in position 118: ordinal not in range(128), HTTP response headers must be in US-ASCII format. How can I use an ASCII acceptable string if my filename is out of bounds? 02 - Charlie, Woody and You\uff0fStudy #22.mp3 doesn't seem to work... EDIT 1 I am using Ubuntu for my OS.

• REST tools support for development and testing

  There is a similar question here but it only covers some of the issues below. We have a client who requires web services using REST. We have tons of experience using SOAP and over time have gathered together a really good set of tools for SOAP development and testing e.g. soapUI Eclipse plugins wsdl2java WSStudio By "tools" I mean a product "out of the box" that we can start using. I'm not talking about cutting code to "roll our own" using Ajax or whatever. The tool set for REST doesn't seem to be nearly as mature? What tools are out there (we use C# and Java mainly) ? Do the tools handle GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE? Is there a decent Eclipse plugin? Is there a decent client testing application like WSStudio where you point the tool to the WSDL and it generates a proxy on the fly with the appropriate methods and inputs and you simple type the data in? Are there any good package monitoring tools that allow you to look at the data? (I'm not thinking about sniffers like Wireshark here but rather things like soapUI that allow you to see the request / response) ?

• How to manually disable/blacklist Maven repository

  In my base project I use dependency of JasperReports which has non-existent repository declaration in its pom. When I run every Maven commad there is dependency looking for commons-collection in this Jasper repository so I need to wait for timeout. This is my base project and is used as dependency in my others projects so again I need to wait for timeout. Is there are a way to move this repository to blacklisted or override this settings? Notes: 1.Why it search in Jasper repository, maybe bacause of ranges <dependency> <groupId>commons-collections</groupId> <artifactId>commons-collections</artifactId> <version>[2.1,)</version> <scope>compile</scope> </dependency> 2.My idea to resolve this problem is to change jasper pom and use proxy repository, but I looking to another option. 3.I use jasperreports 1.3.3 version and I'd like don't change it.
