• SEO impact on subdomain for full name and obscure ccTLD

  There have been a few questions on subdomains and their impact on SEO, mostly in comparison to subfolders. The closest question I've found is this question but it still doesn't completely answer my query. I'm setting up a blog for 'Sam Smith'. It's imperative the SEO is based around his full name as he is a prominent blogger and his name is his value. All ccTLD variations of 'samsmith' (samsmith.com, samsmith.cc etc) are taken. However there has been the opportunity to register an obscure ccTLD for 'smith'. In regards to SEO value purely from the URL... 1) Will there be any negative SEO implications on searches for 'Sam Smith' when setting up the subdomain as 'sam.smith.' compared to a more regular 'samsmith.' domain? Will a search engine recognise the subdomain as the full name as oppose to just 'smith'? 2) Are there any negative SEO implications with an obscure ccTLD. For instance if Sam Smith was a prominent blogger in Canada with most of his audience based there, would there be any negative SEO if he had, for example, a .co ccTLD.

• Switching website DNS with minimal downtime

  I need to change my domain's DNS, but here in Thailand the ISPs don't follow any standards for renewing their cache of records, so it can take the full two days. I have a new website with about 1,000 members currently who are sending messages and uploading photos. I don't want both sites on the old and new server running at the same time because then I'd have to manually merge the database and transfer uploaded photos. It would be a huge pain. Both servers also a unique URL from my host, e.g. website12345.hostingcompany.com (old host) and website67890.hostingcompany.com (new host). I don't have much experience with this, but I think what I can do is on www.mysite.com, use .htaccess to do a masked redirect to the new server's URL (website67890.hostingcompany.com). Is it possible to do this and keep all URLs being masked? For example, www.mysite.com/profile/username will actually be loading website12345.hostingcompany.com/profile/username. From Google searches it sounds like this is possible, but I don't understand why this is possible due to security issues, since what's keeping people from masking their site to URLs like facebook.com? I could really use some advice here! Thanks!

• SEO consequences for merging country sites in a .com

  I am in the process of refactoring a number of rental portals I've built for a company with locations in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Instead of the current setting of each country site running under its own domain name: www.companyname.de www.companyname.ch www.companyname.at I would love to merge them all in this way: www.companyname.com/de www.companyname.com/ch www.companyname.com/at with the country TLDs doing a 301 redirect to the respective .com address. However, I have been repeatedly told not to do this due to likely problems with SEO - the business is very SEO dependent, and being a rental chain, needs to be strong in local results. So the question is: Is there an unavoidable hit in Search Engine Optimization when redirecting to a central .com domain? What measures can be taken to soften the blow? What comes to my mind is explicitly specifying a lang attribute in the html tag. Are there any other ways to specifically point out geographical location for sub-directories?

• DNS: forward part of a managed domain to one host, but sub domain services to another (Google Apps)

  I was going to post this as a comment against DNS: Forward domain to another host, but I don't seem able to do that. I'm in a similar situation. I have a DNS registered/managed by enom, except with the slight twist that the domain was originally registered with enom through a Google Apps account creation. The domain currently supports a Google Apps site/account. I now want to direct the bare primary domain and www entries to a hosting provider for the website component, but leave the Google Apps setup intact for its services such as calendar, mail etc. For now, I'm leaving the domain managed by enom. Also note that when I registered my account with the hosting provider, I gave the same domain name as the existing domain (e.g. example.com), so at their end I'm working with the same domain name in cpanel, etc. In my case, the existing enom DNS entries don't have an A record for the www.example.com, or the bare example.com domain. Instead, there are 4 x @ records with the Google Apps IP Address, 2 x TXT records with what I assume are Google Apps site verification strings/tokens, and a bunch of CNAME records for the various features of Google Apps (mail, calendar, docs, sites, etc). So, my questions: How do I point the www.example.com and example.com DNS entries at enom to my web site hosting provider, while leaving the domain managed by enom, and the Google Apps services working as they are now (with the obvious exception of Google Sites)? How do I setup the example.com mail-related DNS records (MX, etc) at the web site hosting provider, so that outbound email to [email protected] gets correctly sent to the google apps mail account, and doesn't get trapped inside the pseudo domain within the hosting providers servers?

  Say that I have a domain name called example.com and two server located at 2 different IP addresses: 1.2.3.4 and 6.7.8.9. How could I assign example.com to 1.2.3.4 and the subdomain foo.example.com to 6.7.8.9? [EDIT] I did try to put a A record linking from @ to the first IP address and from foo.example.com to the second IP address, as illustrated below: And I did configure a vhosts called foo.example.com on my server at IP address 2. The @ record works. But after 3 hours waiting for the result (DNS delay), nothing happened with foo.example.com, which link to nothing. Why?

  Here's the situation. I got a TLD for my blogger blog and set it up using the instructions from blogger. Blogger asks to: Add two CNAME records. For the first CNAME, where it says Name, Label or Host enter "www" and where it says Destination, Target orPoints To enter "ghs.google.com" . For the second CNAME, enter "NHRILA4K2RJG" as the Name and "gv-GQMUMYGHAMJWECXFLJXVXABIV23C55JIPNIAVD5IGFSXT653O5GA.domainverify.googlehosted.com." I did that on my domain host, and everything was working smoothly. Here's the things that happened: Typing myblog.blogspot.com in the address bar brought me to my new address www.mynewaddress.tld Typing my newaddress.tld brings me to www.mynewaddress.tld Now, I went through the instruction to setup CloudFlare and did everything as required. I saw that CloudFlare is active and working on my TLD www.mynewaddress.tld, however, when I am typing the blogspot address, i.e. myblog.blogspot.com, it's showing a notice that the blog is not hosted on blogger and that I should click "yes" to get redirected to the new website. However, the blog is still on blogger. I think the problem might be with this particular CNAME record Google asks to create, which I did not find imported to the CloudFlare nameservers: For the second CNAME, enter "NHRILA4K2RJG" as the Name and "gv-GQMUMYGHAMJWECXFLJXVXABIV23C55JIPNIAVD5IGFSXT653O5GA.domainverify.googlehosted.com." So I create that CNAME and added it to the CloudFlare panel. My question is - is that what will help Google determine that my blog is still hosted on Blogger? If so, should I turn off CloudFlare for that particular CNAME record or turn it on? Any help is very much appreciated :)

  My regular domain is one I got from GoDaddy. Just recently, I registered a short .cr domain (Costa Rica) in http://www.nic.cr/ . During registration, they asked for nameservers (and just nameservers), so I thought of reusing my GoDaddy nameservers. I kinda thought it would just be a straight-forward mapping, but nothing's happening, though. What am I missing here? (There is an option to use their own nameservers, but I just wanted to explore this option. If there's nothing to be had here, I'll fall back to using theirs.)

  I'm starting o build a online PVP (duel like, one-to-one) game, where there is leveling, skill points, special attacks and all the common stuff. Since I never did anything like that, I'm still thinking about the maths behind the level/skill/special balances. So I thought good way of testing the best/combo builds would implement a Genetic Algorith. It'd be like that: Generate a big portion of random characters Make them fight, level them up accordingly to the victories(more XP)/losses(less XP) Mate the winners, crossing their builds, to try to make even best characters Add some more random chars, emulating new players Repeat the process for some time, or util find some chars who can beat everyone butts So I could play with the math and try to find the balance where the top x% chars would be a mix of various build types. So, is it a good idea, or there are some other easier method to do the balance? PS: I like this also, because it sounds funny

• Advice for moving from custom domain hosted on blogspot to new custom domain on hosting provider [closed]

  Need some advice :) a) Facts: 1. Currently, we have a blog www.thebigbigsky.net hosted on blogspot.com. The site has been up for around a year and google had cached some of the posts. 2. The idea for setting up the blog was to promote/share articles/write-up about personal development and self-growth, and also to offer counseling services related to them. 3. There is another subdomain - chinese.thebigbigsky.net hosting similar blog posts but in Chinese. This is hosted on blogspot as well. b) What we want to do: 1. We did some research on the internet and understood that, to make a website more popular, it is better to have a domain name that is related to the content of the site. Hence, in our case, a domain name containing "personal development" would be more ideal and easier for people to remember. 2. Hence, we are thinking to move away from blogspot to a meaningful new domain (example: personaldevelopmentwithxyz.com) and move all contents there. The new domain will be hosted on a hosting provider e.g. hostgator.com c) Here are the steps we have in mind: 1. Register the new domain (example: personaldevelopmentwithxyz.com) 2. Get a hosting provider hostgator.com 3. Setup a new site based on Wordpress, import all contents from existing blog to this new site - personaldevelopmentwithxyz.com. 4. Switch current blog back to thebigbigsky.blogspot.com 5. Switch DNS of www.thebigbigsky.net to point to the new site on hostgator.com 6. On hostgator.com, setup permanent redirect 301 of www.thebigbigsky.net to point to personaldevelopmetnwithxyz.com by following the tutorial mentioned here - http://www.blogbloke.com/migrating-redirecting-blogger-wordpress-htaccess-apache-best-method/ Questions: 1. Will it have major impact on the current google pagerank or SEO of thebigbigsky.net? As the site is not that popular, we assumed that the impact would not be a major one. 2. Is the domain personaldevelopmentwithxyz.com considered too long? (For SEO etc) 3. Steps c.4 and c.5 above - Will this work for our case? 4. How about the subdomain - chinese.thebigbigsky.net? We would like keep it as separate blog with the domain e.g. chinese.personaldevelopmentwithxyz.com 5. We added "facebook comments" to the existing post on www.thebigtbigsky.net and would not want to lose it. Will the comments still be there after we moved to the new domain? 6. • Recovering domain name from a person I can't find

  I have a problem with one domain and I have no idea how to go about it. I am volunteering for a small charity in Sheffield (UK), more specifically I am redoing their website. A while ago (few years) there was one guy who made that website for them, sorted out a free hosting with another charity, bought domain name etc. Since the domain name is registered in his name, and he disappeared and we have no way of finding/contacting him, we can't move it to different hosting or do virtually nothing about it. Somehow the domain is being renewed every year, we know which domain registration service provider it is registered with, we know the guys name, and that's about it. How would we go about re-registering that domain in the charity's name, instead of that guy, is that at all possible? If we happen to get in touch with him, what should we ask for? • Using rel=canonical and noindex in a 1-n partners enviroment

  We sell a whole site (domain, etc) to partners that create content that is shown together at the main site. What we want to achieve is that the main site copy is the original, but the one that is indexed is the partners copy. We want to do it this way so the search results point to the partner sites but never to the main site while the main site gets all the credit for the links. We are trying setting the main site article with a noindex, follow and a link to the partner article, and in the partner article we have a rel=canonical pointing to the main site article. Are we correct or the noindex at the main site will break the canonical reference?

I need icons to vibrate after long pressing one of them, some callbacks after choosing them, possibility to prepare custom icon's view, page control and horizontal scrolling. I was trying to use OpenSpringBoard but weirdly couldn't see scrollview and pagecontrol working in this project - it seems that there's possibility to use only one page. • Domain forwarding (GoDaddy) - Forward only / Forward with masking

  I am trying to configure my domain to forward to my app engine application. For the forwarding I can choose from "forward only" and "forward with masking". Assume my domain is called "myDomain.com" and my app is located at myApp.appspot.com. If I choose "forward only" and I go to myDomain.com, I get redirect to myApp.appspot.com (myApp.appspot.com also showing in the address bar - But I want to show myDomain.com of course). If I choose "forward with masking", "myDomain.com" is always shown in the address bar, even if I navigate to some subpage. The URL then should look like e.g.: "myDomain.com#!page:xyz", but still shows "myDomain.com". Is there some way in the middle?

  I have a wordpress site which is located at a .com address. The site is a simple 4 page personal site with my academic credentials, publications and a health blog that I started. I have done quite a bit of seo and I rank pretty high for the keywords i want on google.co.uk. However, I do not rank at all on google.com.mt which is the Malta specific search. I have therefore just bought the .com.mt domain and pointed the DNS nameservers to my current host provider and redirected it to the .com address. My goal is to make sure I don't screw up my google.co.uk search ranking, while starting to rank on google.com.mt I'm I doing the right thing or do you have any suggestions??

• Permanent redirect domain to www subdomain without web.config

  I've just set up a site via 1and1 and have run into an issue, I want to accomplish the simple task of redirecting the root domain to the www sub domain however due to complications I cant seam to find a way to get it to work. I'm on a Microsoft (asp.net) package so can't use .htaccess, also the IIS server they have doesn't have the URL redirect module installed (so can't use <rewrite> in web.config). They have built in HTTP forwarding options however if I set the root domain to redirect to the www sub domain it just infinitely redirects. Hopefully there is some obvious option/method I've missed during the past two days of searching!

  I have registered the domain www.posti.sh at nic.sh. The website is on the server www.myskoob.com/postish. Unfortunately, nic.sh does not support frames, i.e. that the domain stays posti.sh as it forwards to www.myskoob.com/postish - so I thought about a URL rewrite on the server. Unfortunately I have no idea how rewriting works - I am thankful for explanations - but I would also like to ask whether this is generally possible. What I need is: The server needs to recognize that the folder postish is accessed Depending on the file that is opened, it needs to rewrite the url to www.posti.sh/<-according filename here- Also, the server needs to understand that a link to www.posti.sh/about.php links to www.myskoob.com/postish/about.php and likewise for other files - at the moment, when I type in posti.sh/about.php it redirects to http://www.myskoob.com/postishabout.php, which does not exist All this should be possible irrespective of whether the url contains a "www" at the beginning or not A plus but not necessary would be that it does not display the .php extensions Would that generally be possible? If not, what would be the alternatives? If anyone knows how to do it, any code and/or way to do it would be much appreciated!

  How do you set up the domain (Im using godaddy) to mask the server url but to append the sub-page link. Im thinking something like the wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/something (or, if it would require httpd.conf access, setting it to append the default subpage link eg. '?page_id=2') Currently I can set up the domain to either be masked completely without showing any sub-page links or to simply redirect my domain to my web server.

• Set up development site on another server/host

  I'm developing a site for a client. They've got a site now that's hosted at hosting.com. I'm going to move them to my VM hosting solution at edge web but I want to run some tests and have the client approve the site before changing the name servers to the new site/hosting location. How do I make this happen? I'm running a red hat/Apache on linux for the edge web hosting. I don't have control of the domain name (i.e. the client controls that right now). Edgeweb has set up a dns zone for the domain name so that when the time comes to switch we're ready to go. I'm a web developer and I understand the technologies that make a user experience 'work' but I'm unfamiliar with the server jargon and all that so, please be patient. Thanks in advance.
