• How can I interrupt a ServerSocket accept() method?

  Hi, In my main thread I have a while(listening) loop which calls accept() on my ServerSocket object, then starts a new client thread and adds it to a Collection when a new client is accepted. I also have an Admin thread which I want to use to issue commands, like 'exit', which will cause all the client threads to be shut down, shut itself down, and shut down the main thread, by turning listening to false. However, the accept() call in the while(listening) loop blocks, and there doesn't seem to be any way to interrupt it, so the while condition cannot be checked again and the program cannot exit! Is there a better way to do this? Or some way to interrupt the blocking method? Thanks!

• How can I make a steady automata in JavaScript?

  I'm working on a JavaScript game and I've got an automata system controlling game time and sprite animation as well as giving a hand to the path finding system for timing and such. My problem is on slow browsers the JavaScript loop I'm using for counting the time is not very accurate. It tends to jump around a lot. I there a way to force the loop to run consistently at 30 fps? The automata can drop frames if it needs to catch up so if the solution requires dropping frames that's ok.

I dont know why it is so slow. Maybe the lotusnotes sql driver? any other ideas? (java based solution, any other solution) What my goal is: To get all the data from remote server and insert into local access table

• Scala actors: receive vs react

  Let me first say that I have quite a lot of Java experience, but have only recently become interested in functional languages. Recently I've started looking at Scala, which seems like a very nice language. However, I've been reading about Scala's Actor framework in Programming in Scala, and there's one thing I don't understand. In chapter 30.4 it says that using react instead of receive makes it possible to re-use threads, which is good for performance, since threads are expensive in the JVM. Does this mean that, as long as I remember to call react instead of receive, I can start as many Actors as I like? Before discovering Scala, I've been playing with Erlang, and the author of Programming Erlang boasts about spawning over 200,000 processes without breaking a sweat. I'd hate to do that with Java threads. What kind of limits am I looking at in Scala as compared to Erlang (and Java)? Also, how does this thread re-use work in Scala? Let's assume, for simplicity, that I have only one thread. Will all the actors that I start run sequentially in this thread, or will some sort of task-switching take place? For example, if I start two actors that ping-pong messages to each other, will I risk deadlock if they're started in the same thread? According to Programming in Scala, writing actors to use react is more difficult than with receive. This sounds plausible, since react doesn't return. However, the book goes on to show how you can put a react inside a loop using Actor.loop. As a result, you get loop { react { ... } } which, to me, seems pretty similar to while (true) { receive { ... } } which is used earlier in the book. Still, the book says that "in practice, programs will need at least a few receive's". So what am I missing here? What can receive do that react cannot, besides return? And why do I care? Finally, coming to the core of what I don't understand: the book keeps mentioning how using react makes it possible to discard the call stack to re-use the thread. How does that work? Why is it necessary to discard the call stack? And why can the call stack be discarded when a function terminates by throwing an exception (react), but not when it terminates by returning (receive)? I have the impression that Programming in Scala has been glossing over some of the key issues here, which is a shame, because otherwise it's a truly excellent book.

The InnerException message was 'Type 'System.OverflowException' with data contract name 'OverflowException:http://schemas.datacontract.org/2004/07/System' is not expected. Add any types not known statically to the list of known types - for example, by using the KnownTypeAttribute attribute or by adding them to the list of known types passed to DataContractSerializer.'. Please see InnerException for more details. Is there some trick to get a generic .NET Exception (any InnerException) to serialize properly?   Okay, the past few days I have been trying to get some input on my programs. Well I decided to scrap them for the most part and try again. So once again, I'm in need of help. For the first program I'm trying to fix, it needs to show the sum of SEVEN numbers. Well, I'm trying to change is so that I don't need the mem[##] = ####. • Control pdb file output from build defintion file

  Hello, I am trying to generate a release build with no pdb files generated. I have seen numerous posts that suggest right-clicking on the project, selecting Properties, going to the Build tab and then to the Advanced... butoon and changing Debug Info to none. This works and all, but I need to do this for a build of ~50 solutions which contain ~25 projects each! Other posts mention editing the appropriate .csproj file, but again, with so many projects, this would take a long time. Is there any way to achieve this via the TFSBuild.proj file?   Hi, I want to insert a row number in a records like counting rows in a specific number of range. example output: RowNumber ID Name 1 20 a 2 21 b 3 22 c 1 23 d 2 24 e 3 25 f 1 26 g 2 27 h 3 28 i 1 29 j 2 30 k I rather to try using the rownumber() over (partition by order by column name) but my real records are not containing columns that will count into 1-3 rownumber. I already try to loop each of record to insert a row count 1-3 but this loop affects the performance of the query. The query will use for the RDL report, that is why as much as possible the performance of the query must be good. any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

  To make story short, i'm building self-learning banner management system. Users will be able to insert these banners to their site when banners will be shown based on sales/impressions ratio. I have 4 tables Banners bannerID int bannerImage varchar.... SmartBanners smartBannerID int smartBannerArrayID int bannerID int impressionsCount int visibility tinyint (percents) SmartBannerArrays smartBannerArrayID int userID int Statistics bannerID int saleAmountPerDay decimal... Each night i need to generate new "visibility" for each SmartBanner based on whole SmartBannerArray that same user has. So i need to get sum of impressions and sales for each bannerID in SmartBannerArray. All comes to my mind is to use double cursor, one will loop thought SmartBannerArrays get needed values for sum of impressions and sales and then inner loop which will access each SmartBanner and change it's "visibility" percentage based on (sales/impressions)/(sumOfSales/sumOfImpressions)*100 Hope you get the picture... Is there any other way to design better tables or not to use double cursor to avoid server overload ?

  I have to generate some update statements based off a table in our database. I created the following script which is generating the update statements I need. But when I try to run those scripts I am getting errors pertaining to unescaped single quotes in the content and &B, &T characters which have special meaning in oracle. I took care of the &B and &T problem by setting SET DEFINE OFF. Whats the best way to escape single quotes within the content?   I'm trying to get Ozeki to recieve SMS messages from my GSM Nokia E63 - it will send messages fine but wont recieve them. Speed up of this version is 1.85x, overwhelming all the loop-unroll version. Here are the questions: In the inner-loop-unroll version, why does increment slow down if the unrolling factor increase, especially change the unrolling factor from 8 to 16, which does not effect the same when switch from 4 to 8? Does the result have some relationship with depth of the CPU pipeline? If the answer is yes, could the degrade of increment reflect pipeline length? What is the probable reason for the optimization of data-zone version? It seems that there is no too much essential difference from the original naive version. EDIT: My test environment is Intel Centrino Duo processor and the verion of gcc is 4.4 Any advice will be highly appreciated! Kind regards!

• Link click does nothing after ajax switching?

  An odd case I'm trying to figure out here. I'm trying to design a mailbox system, and making some of the options ajax-y. Here's the scenario: We have a page with 2 tabs, inbox and compose. Inbox is a essentially a list of links of the form mailbox.php?msg=xxx. Clicking on the inbox or compose tabs does an ajax switch. So, let's say we're on an message page: mailbox.php?msg=123 I click on "compose" - it ajax switches to a compose form. I change my mind, click on "inbox" - it goes back to a list of messages. Note, the url has not changed at this point (all has been done through ajax). I click on the same message as before. It should go back into that message. However, nothing happens! The url it should go to (mailbox.php?msg=123) IS the url showing in the address bar, but, due to the earlier ajax activity, it's showing the inbox. Thoughts on how to resolve this? And, out of curiosity, an explanation? Normally, clicking on a link that takes you to a page you're already on will reload the page. Thanks!

  I have a ready generated MHTML as a byte array (from Aspose.Words) and would like to send it as an email. I'm trying to do this through CDOSYS, though am open to other suggestions.   I'm trying to loop trough Atom feed entries, and get the title attribute lets say, I found this article, I tried this snipped of code : for (final Iterator iter = feeds.getEntries.iterator(); iter.hasNext(); ) { element = (Element)iter.next(); key = element.getAttributeValue("href"); if ((key != null) && (key.length() > 0)) { marks.put(key, key); } } But I get exception saying : java.lang.ClassCastException: com.sun.syndication.feed.synd.SyndEntryImpl cannot be cast to org.jdom.Element at com.emir.altantbh.FeedReader.main(FeedReader.java:47) What did I do wrong? can anyone direct me towards better tutorial or show me where did I make mistake, I need to loop trough entries and extract title tag value. thank you

  In my controller I have this: ViewData["maskList"] = new SelectList(equipmentRepository.GetMasks(), "Id", "DisplayName"); and then I bind it to my view using <div each="var nfa in mfa.NasalFittingAssessment"> ${Html.DropDownList("NasalMaskTypeId", ViewData["maskList"] as IEnumerable<System.Web.Mvc.SelectListItem>, new { class = "ddl" })} </div> Note that I'm using the spark view engine so this DropDownList is getting rendered to the page via a loop. This means that the selected value of the dropdown list will change on each iteration of the loop. What I can't work out is how to pass in the value I want to set the DropDownList to based on the value that is currently being rendered to the screen.

• How to workaround Python "WindowsError messages are not properly encoded" problem?

  It's a trouble when Python raised a WindowsError, the encoding of message of the exception is always os-native-encoded. For example: import os os.remove('does_not_exist.file') Well, here we get an exception: Traceback (most recent call last): File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module> WindowsError: [Error 2] ???????????: 'does_not_exist.file' As the language of my Windows7 is Traditional Chinese, the default error message I get is in big5 encoding (as know as CP950). >>> try: ... os.remove('abc.file') ... except WindowsError, value: ... print value.args ... (2, '\xa8t\xb2\xce\xa7\xe4\xa4\xa3\xa8\xec\xab\xfc\xa9w\xaa\xba\xc0\xc9\xae\xd7\xa1C') >>> As you see here, error message is not Unicode, then I will get another encoding exception when I try to print it out. Here is the issue, it can be found in Python issue list: http://bugs.python.org/issue1754 The question is, how to workaround this? How to get the native encoding of WindowsError? The version of Python I use is 2.6. Thanks.

• SSRS2005 timeout error

  Hi I've been running around circles the last 2 days, trying to figure a problem in our customers live environment. I figured I might as well post it here, since google gave me very limited information on the error message (5 results to be exact). The error boils down to a timeout when requesting a certain report in SSRS2005, when a certain parameter is used. The deployment scenario is: Machine #1 Running reporting services (SQL2005, W2K3, IIS6) Machine #2 Running datawarehouse database (SQL2005, W2K3) which is the data source for #1 Both machines are running on the same vm cluster and LAN. The report requests a fairly simple SP - lets called it sp(param $a, param $b). When requested with param $a filled, it executes correctly. When using param $b, it times out after the global timeout periode has passed. If I run the stored procedure with param $b directly from sql management studio on #2, it returns the results perfectly fine (within 3-4s). I've profiled the datawarehouse database on #2 and when param $b is used, the query from the reporting service to the database, never reaches #2. The error message that I get upon timeout, when using param $b, when invoking the report directly from SSRS web interface is: "An error has occurred during report processing. Cannot read the next data row for the data set DataSet. A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded. Operation cancelled by user." The ExecutionLog for the SSRS does give me much information besides the error message rsProcessingAborted I'm running out of ideas of how to nail this problem. So I would greatly appreciate any comments, suggestions or ideas. Thanks in advance!

• Adding an Object to Vector loses Reference using Java?

  I have a Vector that holds a number of objects. My code uses a loop to add objects to the Vector depending on certain conditions. My question is, when I add the object to the Vector, is the original object reference added to the vector or does the Vector make a new instance of the object and adds that? For example, in the following code: private Vector numbersToCalculate; StringBuffer temp = new StringBuffer(); while(currentBuffer.length() > i) { //Some other code numbersToCalculate.add(temp); temp.setLength(0); //resets the temp StringBuffer } What I'm doing is adding the "temp" StringBuffer to the numbersToCalculate Vector. Should I be creating a new StringBuffer within the loop and adding that or will this code work? Thanks for the help! Eric

• how to do these in visio 2007?

  I am very annoyed with this software. I am unable to do many things with this software. In the book 'UML distilled' many features of UML are discussed which I am not sure how to accomplish with visio 2007. For instance, 1) I can't find the unary association. In the UML static structure under shapes panel on left, there are a lot of components like package, class, blah, blah, binary association, blah, blah, association class. But where is unary association. 2) For sequence diagram, I created a message (any of sync, async, call type message, ordinary message). The I tried to incorporate some parameter information. I went to the properties. There were a category called arguments. But selecting that shows a table where arguments are supposed to be shown. But all are diasbled. 3) For sequence diagram, there is no component delete (the big X) in the UML Sequence. 4) For class diagram, there is supposed to be a comment compartment where comments like mentioning the responsibilities are allowed using a comment prefixed with "--". But I am not sure how to accomplish them. 5) there is also supposed to be a way to indicate static properties of a class. But I am not sure how to do that in visio. 6) there is supposed to be a stereotype for class <. But in the stereotype drop down there is no stereotype. 7) where is the ball and socket component?
