Validating Spatial Object with IsValidDetailed Function SQL Server 2012 has introduced the new function IsValidDetailed(). This function has made my life very easy. In simple words, this function will check if the spatial object passed is valid or not. If it is valid it will give information that it is valid. If the spatial object is not valid it will return the answer that it is not valid and the reason for the same. This makes it very easy to debug the issue and make the necessary correction. It keeps only valid text data without HTML task. This is one of the quite commonly requested tasks many developers have to face everyday. De-fragmentation of Database at Operating System to Improve Performance Operating system skips MDF file while defragging the entire filesystem of the operating system. It is absolutely fine and there is no impact of the same on performance. Read the entire blog post for my conversation with our network engineers. Delay Function – WAITFOR clause – Delay Execution of Commands How do you delay execution of the commands in SQL Server – ofcourse by using WAITFOR keyword. In this blog post, I explain the same with the help of T-SQL script. Find Length of Text Field To measure the length of TEXT fields the function is DATALENGTH(textfield). Clustered Index on Separate Drive From Table Location A table devoid of primary key index is called heap, and here data is not arranged in a particular order, which gives rise to issues that adversely affect performance. Data must be stored in some kind of order. If we put clustered index on it then the order will be forced by that index and the data will be stored in that particular order. Understanding Table Hints with Examples Hints are options and strong suggestions specified for enforcement by the SQL Server query processor on DML statements. Well, this is a very simple question, however during the interview I notice over 50 candidates failed to come up with the scenario. Try to come up with answer in next 10 minutes and if you can’t come up with the answer the blog post read this post for solution. 2012 Simple Explanation and Puzzle with SOUNDEX Function and DIFFERENCE Function In simple words - SOUNDEX converts an alphanumeric string to a four-character code to find similar-sounding words or names. DIFFERENCE function returns an integer value. The  integer returned is the number of characters in the SOUNDEX values that are the same. Read Only Files and SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) I have come across a very interesting feature in SSMS related to “Read Only” files. I believe it is a little unknown feature as well so decided to write a blog about the same. Identifying Column Data Type of uniqueidentifier without Querying System Tables How do I know if any table has a uniqueidentifier column and what is its value without using any DMV or System Catalogues? Only information you know is the table name and you are allowed to return any kind of error if the table does not have uniqueidentifier column. Read the blog post to find the answer. • Should I use my real name in my open source project?

  I developed a few freeware programs in the past which I had signed with my pseudonym Jardo. I'm now planning to release my first open source project and was thinking of using my full real name in the project files (as the "author"). I thought it would be good to use my name as my "trademark" so if someone (perhaps a future headhunter) googles my name, they'll find my projects. But on the other side, I feel a bit paranoid about disclosing my name (in the least case I could be getting a lot of spam to my email, its not that hard to guess your private email from your name). What do you think can be "dangerous" on disclosing your full name? What are the pros and cons? Do you use your real name or a pseudonym in your projects? I read this question: What are the advantages and disadvantages to using your real name online? but that doesn't apply to me bacause it's about using your real name online (internet discussions, profiles, etc.) where I personally see no reason to use my real name... And there is also this question: Copyrighting software, templates, etc. under real name or screen name? which deals with creating a business or a brand which also doesn't apply to me because I will never sell/give away my open source project and if someone else joins in, they can write their name as co-author without any problems...

• Relating NP-Complete problems to real world problems

  I have a decent grasp of NP Complete problems; that's not the issue. What I don't have is a good sense of where they turn up in "real" programming. Some (like knapsack and traveling salesman) are obvious, but others don't seem obviously connected to "real" problems. I've had the experience several times of struggling with a difficult problem only to realize it is a well known NP Complete problem that has been researched extensively. If I had recognized the connection more quickly I could have saved quite a bit of time researching existing solutions to my specific problem. Are there any resources (online or print) that specifically connect NP Complete to real world instances?

  I have URLs like http://example.com/depict?smiles=CO&width=200&height=200 (and with several other optional arguments) My urls.py contains: urlpatterns = patterns('', (r'^$', 'cansmi.index'), (r'^cansmi$', 'cansmi.cansmi'), url(r'^depict$', cyclops.django.depict, name="cyclops-depict"), I can go to that URL and get the 200x200 PNG that was constructed, so I know that part works. In my template from the "cansmi.cansmi" response I want to construct a URL for the named template "cyclops-depict" given some query parameters. I thought I could do {% url cyclops-depict smiles=input_smiles width=200 height=200 %} where "input_smiles" is an input to the template via a form submission. In this case it's the string "CO" and I thought it would create a URL like the one at top. This template fails with a TemplateSyntaxError: Caught an exception while rendering: Reverse for 'cyclops-depict' with arguments '()' and keyword arguments '{'smiles': u'CO', 'height': 200, 'width': 200}' not found. This is a rather common error message both here on StackOverflow and elsewhere. In every case I found, people were using them with parameters in the URL path regexp, which is not the case I have where the parameters go into the query. That means I'm doing it wrong. How do I do it right? That is, I want to construct the full URL, including path and query parameters, using something in the template. • Install a file which should be removed only on real uninstall and never overwritten

  When I install my application, along with the binaries, a conf file is installed that the user can change as he needs (it's actually the user data file). I would like this file to not be overwritten or deleted when a repair, upgrade, modify happens and it should be deleted only when a real uninstall happens. In other words: this conf file is installed along with the binaries and should never be touched again (overwritten/deleted) until a real uninstall happens (not repairs, modifies, upgrades) in which case it should be deleted. So I was thinking of doing: <Component Id="aaa.cfg" Guid="GUID"> <File Id="aaa.cfg" Source="aaa.cfg" KeyPath="yes" /> </Component> But I don't know how could I condition the component so that: 1) the component to be removed only on a real uninstall - not upgrades, repairs, modifies? 2) the file should in no case be overwritten if already exists. • Is it more efficient to always run a delete query, or to check if that information exists first

  Ok this is going to seem like a dumb question to experienced developers, but questions like this bother me until I ask them. So... is it more efficient to always run a delete query by default whether an entry exists or not, for example to delete a user name after a certain period of time (DELETE * from table where username=user), or should you check if that entry exists first using a select query and mysql_num_rows. What uses more processor on the server side? Obviously one approach contains more code, but I was wondering if certain mysql operations used a lot more cpu than others.

• dilemma about mysql. using condition to limit load on a dbf

  hi, I have a table of about 800 000 records. Its basically a log which I query often. I gave condition to query only queries that were entered last month in attempt to reduce the load on a database. My thinking is a) if the database goes only through the first month and then returns entries, its good. b) if the database goes through the whole database + checking the condition against every single record, it's actually worse than no condition. What is your opinion? How would you go about reducing load on a dbf?

  I have a table with one id (autonumber) field and 50 other fields. The table is normalized, these are 50 material properties etc. I want to copy a record from this table into the same table - only the autoincrement id will be different. The query I am using now is INSERT INTO tableName (field1,field2,....field50) SELECT field1,field2,....field50 from tableName WHERE autoid=1234; Note that I have to type in ALL the 50 field names, twice! Is there any way to shorten this query so I don't have to type all of them? Thanks.

  i am creating a mysql function which takes in a varchar and change it to a int based on a mapping table. select name, convert_to_code(country) from users where sex = 'male' here, the convert_to_code() function takes in a country name (e.g. Japan, Finland..) and change it to country code which is an integer (e.g. 1001, 2310..) based on a mapping table called country_maping like below: country_name (varchar) | country_code (int) Japan | 1001 Finland | 2310 Canada | 8756 currently, the stored function need to select country_code from country_mapping where country_name = country_name and return the query result. is that possible to create a hash data struct in SP to optimize the process so that it will not need to perform the query for each row matches the where clause. thanks in advance!

• When does a MySQL Query actually execute in PHP?

  This sounds like a really simple question, but I am new to PHP. If I have a statement like this: $r =& $db->query("insert into table (col1, col2) values (10, 20)"); Do I have to still execute it, or does it get executed when I reference it? I have another case where I have a select query, which seems logically to run only when I call fetchrow, but the code I am presented with (to fix) does not call execute or fetch.I would have expected it to, so I cannot tell if it is just that I don't get it, or that the missing execute statement is the problem. It also does not insert the record, but it does not throw an error I can find. Also, I am a little confused by the =& notation. I looked it up on google, and found a few mentions of it, but I am still not clear on it. Thanks.

Here I want to select distinct department from Table 1 as well which will be my next quest. Please answer to that also if possible.

• MySQL, how can I SELECT WHERE one field value doesn't occurs in another?

  I'm trying to do a search on my test server, speed isn't so important. I want to find if a phrase, the whole contents of one field, occurs in any part (as a whole) doesn't occur in another field. Heres my current query which finds if the phrase does occur SELECT pads.padid, pads.programname, keywords.word FROM Pads JOIN keywords ON Pads.Padid = keywords.Padid WHERE pads.Programname = keywords.word AND RemoveMeDate = '2001-01-01 00:00:00' My problem is that the field word contains other words too. I need to produce a count of where there isn't a keywords record with keywords.word equal to pads.programname ? EDIT: So if I have these records Pads: PadID=3 ProgramName=my prog PadID=4 ProgramName=Bad prog PadID=5 ProgramName=Good prog PadID=6 ProgramName=other prog Keywords: PadID=3 word=fox prog PadID=3 word=pig prog PadID=4 word=big prog PadID=4 word=nice prog PadID=5 word=fox prog PadID=6 word=bad prog PadID=6 word=fox prog The query I want would retun a count of 3 and record 6 has bad prog

• Learning how to program real things.

  How would you guys recommend I actually learn to program real things? I mean, I know how to do basic academic things. I can implement a templated stack/queue/map/etc. data structure in C++ or Java or whatever. I can make a text-based hangman game or whatever. Etc etc. But how can I learn to program something real, something useful? I've done project Euler up to question 100 or so, and I feel like that's given me more mathematical maturity but not programming maturity. Should I buy a book and follow exercises, struggle through interesting projects, etc, ? In short, how did you guys transition from academic exercises to real, fun and/or useful programs?
