• Apache redirecting: reason unknown

  I have a simple php script. The script is not important. It just prints out $_SERVER. When I request an URL like www.server.com/?ref=bar everything is fine. However if the request contains something like www.server.com/?ref=http://www.test.com (?ref=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.test.com) the server redirects to 403.shtml. No redirect for http://x but redirects http://x.y As far as I can understand somehow the server doesn't like "http://x". It always redirects to 403.shtml when there is a valid query string in the form of a valid url. my .htacess file is the same both on my server and local test server and local test server behaves as expected (no redirects). So I don't it is related to .htaccess. I'm on shared host on Hostgator. Can anyone help? However if I remove the .htaccess redirect to 403 also disappears. But I need the above .htaccess file. Is there a way to get around this?

• Upgrading Visual Studio 2010

  I have been running Visual Studio 2010 as my main development studio on my development computer since the RC was released. I need to upgrade that to the RTM, but first I need to remove it. Microsoft have done a lot of work to make this easy, and it works. Its as easy as uninstalling from the control panel. I have had may previous versions of Visual Studio 2010 on this same computer with no need to rebuild to remove all the bits. Figure: Run the uninstall from the control panel to remove Visual Studio 2010 RC Figure: The uninstall removes everything for you.  Figure: A green tick means the everything went OK. If you get a red cross, try installing the RTM anyway and it should warn you with what was not uninstalled properly and you can remove it manually.   Once you have VS2010 RC uninstalled installing should be a breeze. The install for 2010 is much faster than 2008. Which could take all day, and then some on slower computers. This takes around 20 minutes even on my small laptop. I always do a full install as although I have to do c# I sometimes get to use a proper programming language VB.NET. Seriously, there is nothing worse than trying to open a project and the other developer has used something you don't have. Its not their fault. Its yours! Save yourself the angst and install Fully, its only 5.9GB. Figure: I always select all of the options.   Now go forth and develop! • Resolution Independence in libGDX

  How do I make my libGDX game resolution/density independent? Is there a way to specify image sizes as "absolute" regardless of the underlying density? I'm making a very simple kids game; just a bunch of sprites displayed on-screen, and some text for menus (options menu primarily). What I want to know is: how do I make my sprites/fonts resolution independent? (I have wrapped them in my own classes to make things easier.) Since it's a simple kids game, I don't need to worry about the "playable area" of the game; I want to use as much of the screen space as possible. What I'm doing right now, which seems super incorrect, is to simply create images suitable for large resolutions, and then scale down (or rarely, up) to fit the screen size. This seems to work okay (in the desktop version), even with linear mapping on my textures, but the smaller resolutions look ugly. Also, this seems to fly in the face of Android's "device independent pixels" (DPs). Or maybe I'm missing something and libGDX already takes care of this somehow? What's the best way to tackle this? • http proxy caching headers

  I have a service for which I'm about to upgrade the authentication. However, I'm trying to ensure that I make the right decision about where the encryption algorithms occur. I currently have two options: option 1) the authentication module is deployed to the client as a javascript library over https and executes client-side, so that the client can POST back an encrypted string. option 2) the authentication module is kept server-side so that the client need only POST back an unencrypted string. I know that many http proxies cache/log the query-string (and therefore any query parameters), but does anyone know of any http proxies that cache the headers as well? If the headers are being cached, then I'll clearly want to encrypt the password inside the SSL encryption, because to my understanding the headers of an HTTPS request may not always be encrypted (depending on the capabilities of the browser etcetera). Can anyone shed any light on the caching of headers by http proxies? Do you have one that does, or know of one that does?

• SVN Checkout URL - fresh install

  I just setup SVN on a server that is running Ubuntu server as a fresh install. I've got it up and running but am having difficult determining how to connect to it. I'm trying to do an import using the local IP address: http://IP/RepositoryName but it's saying it can't resolve the IP. I'm wondering if there's something on the server I need to setup. I have not modified dav_svn.conf because there is another server here that is running SVN (I'm migrating it to a new server) and it's dav_svn.conf is not modified. The current working SVN has a subdomain associated with the IP location of the server but doesn't do anything special with the ports as far as I can tell. I'm getting this error via RapidSVN when I try to import... Error: Error while performing action: OPTIONS of 'http://IP/RepositoryName': could not connect to server (http://IP) Any help would be appreciated

• Variable naming conventions?

  I've just started using ReSharper (for C#) and I kind of like its code smells finder, it shows me some things about my writing that I meant to fix a long time ago (mainly variable naming conventions). It caused me to reconsider some of my naming conventions for methods and instance variables. ReSharper suggests that instance variable be lower camel case and begin with an underscore. For a while I meant to make all my local variables lower camel case but is the underscore necessary? Do you find it comfortable? I don't like this convention but I also haven't tried it yet, what is you opinion of it? The second thing it prompted me to re-evaluate is my naming conventions for GUI event handlers. I usually use the VS standard of ControlName_Action and my controls usually use hungarian notation (as a suffix, to help clarify in code what is visible to the user and what isn't when dealing with similarly named variable) so I end up with OK_btn_Click(), what is your opinion of that? Should I succumb to the ReSharper convention or there are other equally valid options?

• 256 SSD / 2TB Internal drive, i7, 16GB RAM.. explorer.exe still slow

  OK, so I just got done tweaking my brand new PC and explorer.exe still manages to be sluggish not as snappy as I'd like or expected at all. Specs are i7 4th gen processor, 16GB RAM, windows 7 64 home premium on 256GB SSD, secondary internal 2TB drive. I assumed system would be lightning fast, been doing a bunch of researching and switched out a lot of different settings including enabling/disabling indexing, turning pagefile on/off or placing it on separate drive, turning folder optimization options on/off.. changes have been minimal or none at all. Any further advice or anything I might be missing, besides a new/repair install? PC is literally 3 days old I don't feel like I need a new install at all

• mod_usertrack with X-Forwarded-For (proxy) IPs, apache 2.2

  I'm using apache 2.2 with mod_usertrack, behind a reverse proxy (load balancer). Now, the proxy disguises the client's real IP addresses (keeps them in the X-Forwarded-For header), and forwards the request along. mod_usertrack uses the clients' IP (along with some noise) to generate a GUID for each client. However, because of the proxy, it only sees a single IP and the generated GUIDs for each client are very similar (even with some possible collisions). I would like to upgrade apache to version 2.4, but it seems to be somewhat of a project. I did manage to compile it using this post and a few others, only to discover the folder structure does not resemble the one I had before (default ubuntu). I'm weary of tweaking it myself ... and I will be making my life miserable if I want to upgrade the server later on. So ... what are my options? Is there a good unofficial repository that packages apache 2.4 for Oneiric? (please provide a short 'how to', I'm not great in installing packages) Is there an alternative route to solve this? (Upgrading just the user_track module? Another module that works with apache 2.2?)

• unexpected EOF and end of document

  I have been fiddling with this code for a few days. Mind you I am a beginner. I just want to get my script to be able to download a remote file, and scan MineCraft plugins. I got the scan plugins to work, but I'm having two other issues. • Guidance in naming awkward domain-specific objects?

  I'm modeling a chemical system, and I'm having problems with naming my objects within an enum. I'm not sure if I should use: the atomic formula the chemical name an abbreviated chemical name. For example, sulfuric acid is H2SO4 and hydrochloric acid is HCl. With those two, I would probably just use the atomic formula as they are reasonably common. However, I have others like sodium hexafluorosilicate which is Na2SiF6. In that example, the atomic formula isn't as obvious (to me) but the chemical name is hideously long: myEnum.SodiumHexaFluoroSilicate. I'm not sure how I would be able to safely come up with an abbreviated chemical name that would have a consistent naming pattern. From a maintenance point of view, which of the options would you prefer to see and why? Some details from comments on this question: Audience for the code will be just programmers, not chemists. I'm using C#, but I think this question is more interesting when ignoring the implementation language I'm starting with 10 - 20 compounds and would have at most 100 compounds. The enum is to facilitate common calculations - the equation is the same for all compounds but you insert a property of the compound to complete the equation. For example, Molar mass (in g/mol) is used when calculating the number of moles from a mass (in grams) of the compound. Another example of a common calculation is the Ideal Gas Law and its use of the Specific Gas Constant

• Security in a private web service

  I am developing a web site and a web service for a small on-line game. Technically, I'll be using Express (node.js) and MongoDB+Redis for the databases. This the structure I came up with: One Express server that will server as the Web Service. This will connect to the databases. One Express server that will provide the web site. It will connect to the Web Service to retrieve and push the information. iOS and Android application will be able to interact with the WebService. Taking into account: It is a small game. The information transferred is not critical. There will NOT be third party applications. At least for the moment. My concern is about which level of security I should use in each of the scenarios: Security of the user playing through web browser Security of the applications and the Web Server connecting to the WS. I have take a look at the different options and: OAuth and/or Https is too much for this scenario, isn't it? Will be a good option to hash the user and password with MD5(or similar) and some salt? I would like to get some directions and investigate by my own rather than getting a response like "you should you use this node.js module..." Thanks in advance,

• Inconsistent black levels in windows 7 media center

  I've got a HTPC running windows 7 64bit, hooked up to a Samsung LCD TV. My problem is different types of video are displaying different black levels on the TV. When I play a bluray through Arcsoft Total Media Theater I have to set the "HDMI Black Level" to "normal" in the TV picture options menu. When I play recorded TV through WMC I have to set it to "low" otherwise the black colors on the video are washed out and grey. Is there any way to configure the system so all videos are displayed with the same black level? The hdmi black level setting is deep in Samsung's menus so it's becoming a chore to keep switching it everytime I watch a different type of video. I'm using an ATI 4670 graphics card with HDMI output going straight to the TV. In the ATI catalyst control center I've got pixel format set to RGB 4:4:4 (Full RGB) since the TV wont allow me to change the HDMI black level if I choose one of the other settings.

• sending php mail from localhost

  I have installed php, mySQL, postfix and sendmail and have set up a simple email script on my local host server. mail() returns 1 (TRUE) when I send an e-mail, however the email does not arrive at the destination. Installation The mail functions are part of the PHP core. There is no installation needed to use these functions. Requirements For the mail functions to be available, PHP requires an installed and working email system. The program to be used is defined by the configuration settings in the php.ini file. Runtime Configuration The behavior of the mail functions is affected by settings in the php.ini file. Mail configuration options: Name Default Description Changeable sendmail_path NULL Unix systems only: Specifies where the sendmail program can be found (usually /usr/sbin/sendmail or /usr/lib/sendmail) PHP_INI_SYSTEM I found it at /usr/lib/sendmail however, I can not find the configuration file, which is where I assume my problem is, as I have not told anything which server I am using to send my mail through. • Wacom Bamboo CTH460L issues in Ubuntu 10.04

  I recently bought a Wacom Bamboo Pen & Touch CTH460L. I installed doctormo PPA, however, the pen functionality didn't work and the touch was very glitchy (when I touched it, it immediately double clicked and began to drag elements in the screen). I tried to configure it using the wacom-utility package in the Synaptic Package Manager (version 1.21-1) but that didn't work either. Then I followed this post (#621, written by aaaalex), and after some problems trying to restart Ubuntu (graphics related problems), the pen works fine (it could be better, though) but the touch functionality doesn't work anymore. Currently I have installed xserver-xorg-input-wacom (1:0.10.11-0ubuntu7), wacom-dkms (0.8.10.2-1ubuntu1) and wacom-utility. The Wacom Utility only displays an "options" field under "Wacom BambooPT 2FG 4X5" but no other option to configure it. What is the correct way to get this tablet working on Ubuntu 10.04?. By the way, currently I can't start Ubuntu properly when the tablet is connected (in that case, Ubuntu start in low graphics mode). I need to connect it later.

• Radeon 5850 Why am I not getting 3 monitors up as a choice ??

  Ive just bought the top end ATI Radeon card with 2 normal monitor ports and a HDMI. The idea was to continue using my dual screen setup as always and to use the last plug, the HDMI on my TV. I got a new 52 inch HD TV with all the necessary bits. This should work fine. But.. in Display Properties I still get only my 2 monitors up as options. Not the Digital TV. When I unplug 1 monitor and restart the computer, I get the TV and the other monitor. But never all 3 at the same time. Why is this ? Where can I go to tell it that I need all 3 screens at the same time. Also I get a message saying my gfx card also gives sound through the HDMI cable.. But the TV tells me its recieving a sound format that it does not understand. Any ideas on that too while were at it ?

  Thanks in advance from this Ubuntu noob... On Ubuntu 12.04 LTS I have installed Sun's JDK7, Eclipse, and the Arduino IDE. I want the Arduino to use OpenJDK 6 and want Eclipse to use Sun's JDK 7. From my understanding I need to manually choose which Java to use before running each application. This led me to the 'update-java-alternatives -l' command... when I run this I only see the following: java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64 1061 /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64 ...but when I run 'update-alternatives --config java' I see the following: *0 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java auto mode 1 /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java manual mode 2 /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/bin/java manual mode 3 /usr/lib/jvm/jre1.7.0/bin/java manual mode I don't understand why the update-java-alternatives doesn't display the same 3 options. I also don't understand how to switch between OpenJDK6 and JDK7. Can someone please explain how I can go about using the OpenJDK6 for Arduino development and Sun JDK7 for Eclipse/Android development? • Problems setting up home web server

  Has anyone been able to get a server working with the router smcwbr14t-g? Although I have been able to get Apache set up correctly and my website works on the internal IP 192.168.2.101, I've been running into a dead end when trying to get it to show up on my external IP. In my router, there is no option for port forwarding, but there are options for a 'virtual server'. Following the manual, I have it set up like this: http://imgur.com/zrcV7.png I also disabled the firewall. I configured Apache to listen to ports 80, 81, and 443, none of which solved the problem. However, the IP's 192.168.2.101:443 and :81 load fine. The problem is that I still cannot load the web site from my external IP, either from my computer or outside.

  NOTE - Although this question is for a specific version of Ubuntu and a specific Broadcom model, the answer to it is for most Broadcom models and versions of Ubuntu 11.04, 11.10, 12.04 and 12.10. If you have come here from another question, feel free to read the answer instead. The answer covers many problems with several solutions. I'm having serious problems installing the Broadcom drivers for Ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in Linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. How can I get Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless working? Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done. Now, the only options i see are: Wired Network Auto Eth0 Disconnect VPN Enable networking Connection information Edit connection. hope above info is enough for your help.

  I want to remove apache as if it was never installed, no config files left behind. I intend to reinstall apache2 fresh. I have tried various combinations of apt-get options to no success. apt-get remove apache2 apt-get remove --purge apache2 apt-get purge apache2 apt-get autoremove apache2 None of these totally remove apache properly. Nothing works, the /etc/apache2 directory still exists. So I deleted it. When I install apache the folder is never created. Running Ubuntu server 10.10.

• How can a large, Fortran-based number crunching codebase be modernized?

  A friend in academia asked me for advice (I'm a C# business application developer). He has a legacy codebase which he wrote in Fortran in the medical imaging field. It does a huge amount of number crunching using vectors. He uses a cluster (30ish cores) and has now gone towards a single workstation with 500ish GPUS in it. However where to go next with the codebase so: Other people can maintain it over next 10 year cycle Get faster at tweaking the software Can run on different infrastructures without recompiles After some research from me (this is a super interesting area) some options are: Use Python and CUDA from Nvidia Rewrite in a functional language. For example, F# or Haskell Go cloud based and use something like Hadoop and Java Learn C What has been your experience with this? What should my friend be looking at to modernize his codebase? UPDATE: Thanks @Mark and everyone who has answered. The reasons my friend is asking this question is that it's a perfect time in the projects lifecycle to do a review. Bringing research assistants up to speed in Fortran takes time (I like C#, and especially the tooling and can't imagine going back to older languages!!) I liked the suggestion of keeping the pure number crunching in Fortran, but wrapping it in something newer. Perhaps Python as that seems to be getting a stronghold in academia as a general-purpose programming language that is fairly easy to pick up.   Since the first beta of Analysis Services 2012, I worked with many companies designing and implementing solutions based on Analysis Services Tabular. I am glad that Microsoft published a white paper about a case-study using one of these scenarios: An Analysis Services Case Study: Using Tabular Models in a Large-scale Commercial Solution. Alberto Ferrari is the author of the white paper and many people contributed to it. The final result is a very technical document based on a case study, which provides a level of detail that I don’t see often in other case studies (which are usually more marketing-oriented). This white paper has the following structure: Requirements (data model, capacity planning, client tool) Options considered (SQL Server Columnstore Indexes, SSAS Multidimensional, SSAS Tabular) Data Model optimizations (memory compression, query performance, scalability) Partitioning and Processing strategy for near real-time latency Hardware selection (NUMA analysis, Azure VM tests) Scalability tests (estimation of maximum users per node) If you are in charge of evaluating Tabular as analytical engine, or if you have to design your solution based on Tabular, this white paper is a must read. But if you just want to increase your knowledge of Analysis Services, you will find a lot of useful technical information. That said, my favorite quote of the document is the following one, funny but true: […] After several trials, the clear winner was a video gaming machine that one guy on the team used at home. That computer outperformed any available server, running twice as fast as the server-class machines we had in house. • How do I enable in-place tablet pc input panel for non tablet PCs?

  Hi all, Is it possible to enable the in-place tablet PC input panel on a non-tablet PC? I have checked the "For tablet pen input, show the Input Panel icon next to the text entry area when possible" checkbox in the options of the Input Panel. Does this not work because pen input is something different than mouse input? I do have a touch screen, but it just emulates a mouse (moving the cursor, pressing the left mouse button and such). I can get the Input Panel to show manually by starting tabtip.exe and then event the ink works, but I cannot get it to show (itself or it's in-place icon) when I activate text input controls. Does anyone know what's up?

  I'm trying to put together a relatively complex flow-chart thing -as part of a University assignment (health-related, and gosh, does my university love all things Microsoft Office...). Because of the way the chart progresses I have to connect two objects with a 'double elbow' version of the 'elbow arrow connector.' I accept that perhaps this complexity means I should redesign the chart, but I've tried and failed to simplify things already. But their own cloud storage service,Windows Live SkyDrive, complicated these simple and daily used operations. We need a guide to figure out how to perform basic copy/move operations. Couple of years ago we wrote about moving files between folders in old version of SkyDrive but the guide does not hold good today as SkyDrive has gone through many user interface changes in the recent past. Today one of our readers asked us how to move/copy files in the latest version of SkyDrive and here are the steps to be followed 1. Login to your Windows Live SkyDrive 2. Select the file you want to Move or Copy by clicking on the information icon (see 2 in below image) 3. After selecting the information icon, expand Information section displayed on the right side panel to access Move and Copy options (see 3 in the below image). 4. To move the selected file to another folder, select Move option and Sky Drive will guide you through folder selection user interface for choosing the target folder. 5.
