• How much code do you write everyday, *at work*?

  I'm graduating college, about to start a junior software engineering position, and I've been wondering how much I'm going to be expected to do on what kind of timeline. I mean, in python I can write maybe 500 lines in 8 hours. In C, maybe 200 lines in 8 hours. And that's a big maybe. (I'm f#$*ing terrible with C.) Other languages are somewhere in between. I don't even know if that's ridiculously slow or normal or even good, hence the question. How much code do you write a day? It would be helpful to specify what language/technology you're using, and to make note if there are big differences between them like with myself.

• A simple deployment example using Oracle Solaris 11

  Last week I was over in Melbourne and Sydney to present at an Oracle Technology Network System Administration Day. During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy! • Why is this happening with the wine menu?

  Some of the items in the Wine menu are given a prefix that is their entire path. The items that don't have the long prefix seem to work fine, but those that do, don't respond to the Properties button or double-click in the menu editor. They take a lot of space, and look ugly, but I can't rename them. I've tried editing their associated files, there doesn't appear to be anything different about them to the ones that are working fine. They weren't always like that - it just happened after an upgrade one day and it's been like that ever since.

• How do I check that my tests were not removed by other developers?

  I've just came across an interesting collaborative coding issue at work. I've written some unit/functional/integration tests and implemented new functionality into application that's got ~20 developers working on it. All tests passed and I checked in the code. Next day I updated my project and noticed (by chance) that some of my test methods were deleted by other developers (merging problems on their end). New application code was not touched. How can I detect such problem automatically? I mean, I write tests to automatically check that my code still works (or was not deleted), how do I do the same for tests? We're using Java, JUnit, Selenium, SVN and Hudson CI if it matters.

• Anyone code at a treadmill desk? [closed]

  have been thinking about getting a treadmill desk for awhile now but I just don't know if it is possible to code at one. I can see doing a normal computer job while walking very slow but I just don't know if you can write code do it. Like a lot of people I could stand to lose weight and I am just not in shape anymore. I sit at my computer for at least 12 hours a day and then I am on my laptop for a few more hours. I need to do something to help my health. I also have been seeing a lot of reports about the long term health issues related to desk jobs. Like this. Before I drop a few hundred dollars on a new desk I am wondering if anyone has tried a treadmill desk and if so which one?

• I loose some directories when i upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04

  last day i upgraded my ubunut 11.10 desktop to ubuntu 12.04. I was running a KVM virtual about 7 machines and managed by virt-manage software.... anyway when i finished upgrading i found that virt-manager is not working so i have to reconfigure it again and install some other missing packages that was deleted!!!! anyway i solve this issue...then i started to restore my virtual machines i restore 2 machines without any problems the third and fourth ones (windows) make a check disk that takes more that 6 hours but finally it works... other machines i cant find their attached hard disks i don't know what happens but i cant found that files. 1- upgrading delete files!?!! 2- Is there anyway to restore those files? thanks in advance

• Update installed on netbook.. now sidebar icons have disappeared! :oS

  hope someone can help. I am not extremely computer literate and my brother installed Ubuntu on my Acer net book when my windows crashed irretrievably . I recently (day before yesterday) had a box come up saying an update (i think it was 10 or 11 .something) i followed the instructions to download and install it and now, all my side bar icons have disappeared. I happened upon an Internet connection by chance and have no idea whatsoever how to get them back. This is quite probably a really stupid question and a really easy fix but as i said earlier, i am pretty much a novice, very far from a computer expert! Thanx in advance :o)

  Before patching scuttle or semanticscuttle I thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a lighter-weight/faster system to tag bookmarks and vote on them? LAMP is fine. Ideally, I should be allowed to interfere with the database directly. My actual problem is I want to administer roughly 80m bookmarks, tag them, vote on them (it's just 10 users accessing the system), but here's the thing: All of those bookmarks will change their descriptions (and title lines) at least once a day. Both systems support the del.icio.us API but my LAMP stack is unable to cope with the load.

• How do you deal with the details when reading code?

  After reading some projects, I find that it is not the architecture of the software that is really hard to know. It is not hard to figure out the architecture immediately if the project is clearly designed and implemented, if it's hard and never seen before, some day later I can find out some pattern similar to the one I read in the same domain. The difficulty is that the concepts and mechanism defined by the author are really hard to guess, and these concepts may spread in the whole project which makes it hard to grasp. The situation is normal and universal and you can ask questions to your colleague when in a company. However, it gets worse if nobody around you knows these details. How do you handle these details which block your reading?

• Newb: First install of ubuntu, no wired or wireless

  Ran 12.04 through a usb drive for a day or so, and had no issues outside of some latency that is more due to the lack of ram on my aspire one D255e than to OS. Had wireless running with no issue, and wired tested as working also. Ran the install and removed windows 7, wireless network is detected but ethernet is not, and neither gets connection. Disabled proprietary driver and rebooted, re-enabled driver and still neither. I know nothing of ubuntu yet! What do? _<

• What's a good open source cloud computing software? [closed]

  In particular, the "cloud" computing that I'm referring to is: I'm going to get some Linux servers. Then I have pretty big computing tasks to do every day. So my goal is to be able to run some shell command to request an "instance" (ie, if a server has 4 CPU, then the computing software will configure that server to have 4 instances, assuming all my tasks are single thread). Ideally, then I can run the following command: ./addjobs somebatchfile where somebatch file contains one command per line ./removejobs all ./listalljobs (ie, everything is done in shell. And the "computing software" can return me the hostname that's available in some environment variable, etc) And that's all I needed. I run into OpenStack.. but it seems too complicated for this purpose (ie, it does all the Imagine sharing stuff, etc).. All I want, is something SIMPLE that manages the Linux boxes for me and I'm just going to run shell commands on them... Is there such open source software? Thanks,

• Assembly as a First Programming Language?

  How good of an idea do you think it would be to teach people Assembly (some variant) as a first programming language? It would take a lot more effort than learning for instance Java or Python, but one would have good understanding of the machine more or less from "programming day one" (compared to many higher level languages, at least). • Civilization 4: time in own scenario runs up too quickly.

  In Civilization 4 (Beyond the Sword) I started making a scenario that focuses on the colonization of North America. For added realism, I set the StartYear=1780. Everytime I run the scenario, the time runs up far too quickly–probably because I set Era=ERA_ANCIENT and GameTurn=0–so that after just twenty turns the clock nears present day. I'm not really sure how to go fix this, other than by playing an actual marathon game from the start up to the year 1780 and copy over the values. Is there any way to calculate/know the right values for my scenario?

• Visual Studio 2010 - Faster Startup with /nosplash

  I read a blog the other day about the /nosplash switch in Visual Studio. Apparently, it's been around a while and I'm a little late on finding out about it. I figured I'd share it for those of you that come across this and didn't know about it as well. Basically all it does is turn off the Visual Studio splash screen which speeds up initial startup time. It's not a big difference but every little bit helps. I choose speed over looks. You can set the switch by right clicking on Visual Studio, selecting Properties, and adding "/nosplash" on the target Property, so it will look like this: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /nosplash. Feel free to try it out and see if you like it. You can always change it back by just removing the /nosplash switch when you're done testing. There are plenty more Visual Studio switches out there but this is the main one that came in handy for me.   - Mike

• What are my options for Web 2.0 gallery software?

  Good day everyone! This is my first post on this site ^_^ My question is: What are my options if I need a Web 2.0 gallery software that work in a very similar manner to this removed web site. Essentially: users can create account, then create and manage their own galleries. And all other users and guests can see these galleries, add tags, comments, etc. Basically a community driven gallery web site. When it comes to "normal" cms I know a lot of good options, but I never worked with any gallery management software... If you can suggest me some good solutions (free) it would be great! Also: If you by any chance know what software is used at this removed website it would be even better, because this solution suits me the best and I would have used this engine, but I cant find any information on what this engine is and if it is even public, or privately developed thing. • Why is the superblock last mount time in the future?

  Future time: Since installing Ubuntu 12.04, I regularly have to fun fsck and reset my clock because it shows a 'future time' : Err.Msg. "superblock last mount time is in the future by less than a day, probably due to hardware clock being incorrectly set." FIXED.
