• How can I close my software in a save way?

  Up to now I used my application as a stand alone product. So, when user pressed "Stop" button I called System.exit(0); and it was fine. Now my application will be called (in a programmatic way) from another program. So, I afraid that System.exit(0); will kill not only my process but also the external software which started my program. So, what is the correct way to shutdown my application if a corresponding request from an external software is received? My application is an GUI application. So, I want to close the window but I also want to close all processes performed by my program. ADDED: To be more specific, I want to close all threads started by my program. My program does not start any OS process or any other program.

• Serialized task distribution: use thread or epoll?

  Now I'm in such a situation that there is a group of predefined tasks for multiple clients to do(any client can take any task). When a client connects to the server, server choose a task from the uncompleted tasks and send it to the client. It takes a while for the client to finish the task and send the result back to the server. Since a task should be sent to only one client, server should process requests in a serialized way. Now I have two plans to do it: create a thread for each client connection and all the threads take turns accessing the task pool, or use epoll listening on all the connection and process for each event of clients. Which one is better for the job? Or is there any other ideas? The server will be run on a multi-core machine.

  I have 2 (or more) intersecting meshes, which require joining into 1 mesh object. I want to have some control over the resulting seam vertex insertion, so looking to write myself rather than use a library. Has anyone come across some open source code to base the algorithm on / ideas on the process? Initial impressions are: 1. Present in every 3D modelling program - mostly reinventing existing process (hence search for examples) 2. Potential for fiddly-ness around the polygon face direction and just touching conditions. • Regexp in iOS to find comments

  I am trying to find and process 'java-style' comments within a string in objective-C. I have a few regex snippets which almost work but I am stuck on one hurdle: different options seem to make the different styles work. For example, I am using this to match: NSArray* matches = [[NSRegularExpression regularExpressionWithPattern:expression options:NSRegularExpressionAnchorsMatchLines error:nil] matchesInString:string options:0 range:searchRange]; The options here allow me successfully find and process single line comments (//) but not multiline (/* */), if I change the option to NSRegularExpressionDotMatchesLineSeparators then I can make multiline work fine but I can't find the 'end' of a single line comment. I suppose really I need dot-matches-line-separators but I need a better way of finding the end of a single line comment? The regexp I have so far are: @"/\\*.*?\\*/" @"//.*$" it's clear to see if dot matches a line separator then the second one (single line) never 'finishes' but how do I fix this? I found some suggestions for single line that were more like: @"(\/\/[^"\n\r]*(?:"[^"\n\r]*"[^"\n\r]*)*[\r\n])" But that doesn't' seem to work at all! Thanks in advance for any pointers.

• How to drop a sortable block?

  I have a list which is reordered using sortable. I defined a trash can div, and I want to achieve that when the blocks are dropped on this div to get deleted. So far I can't seam to fine the way to fire the drop event, when I release the item gets back to his previous position. • Cross domain XMLHttpRequest in classic ASP

  My code is working fine till i migrate it to another server with firewall. After since, some part of my code is not working. Its seem to be the xmlhttp POST problem. • Reading files with Java

  I would like to know how can I read a file byte by byte then perform some operation every n bytes. for example: Say I have a file of size = 50 bytes, I want to divide it into blocks each of n bytes. Then each block is sent to a function for some operations to be done on those bytes. The blocks are to be created during the read process and sent to the function when the block reaches n bytes so that I don`t use much memory for storing all blocks. I want the output of the function to be written/appended on a new file. This is what I've reached to read, yet I don't know it it is right: fc = new JFileChooser(); File f = fc.getSelectedFile(); FileInputStream in = new FileInputStream(f); byte[] b = new byte[16]; in.read(b); I haven't done anything yet for the write process.

  Suppose I have a class A, and A1, A2 inherits from A. There are 2 functions: List<A1> getListA1(){...} List<A2> getListA2(){...} Now I want to do something similar to both A1 and A2 in another function public void process(List<A>){...} If I want to pass the instance of either ListA1 or ListA2, of course the types doesn't match because the compiler doesn't allow the coercion from List< A1 to List< A. I can't do something like this: List<A1> listA1 = getListA1(); List<A> newList = (List<A>)listA1; //this is not allowed. So what is the best approach to the process()? Is there any way to do it in a universal way rather than write the similar code to both List and List?

• VHDL Simulation Timing Behaviour

  I'm trying to write some VHDL code that simply feeds sequential bits from a std_logic_vector into a model of an FSM. However, the bits don't seem to be updating correctly. To try figure out the issue, I have the following code, where instead of getting a bit out of a vector, I'm just toggling the signal x (the same place I'd be getting a bit out). clk <= NOT clk after 10 ns; process(clk) begin if count = 8 then assert false report "Simulation ended" severity failure; elsif (clk = '1') then x <= test1(count); count <= count + 1; end if; end process; EDIT: It appears I was confused.I've put it back to trying to take bit by bit out of the vector. This is the output. I would have thought that on when count is 1, x would take on the value of test1(1) which is a 1.

After form 12 I would like wipe out all the property values in the storing class so that the next user won't accidentally record values when starting the process at form 1. Is it possible to erase/destroy/dispose of all property values in a class? The situation is as follows: --> Start Process (Begin Transaction) --> Begin Transaction for step 1 --> Step 1 --> Commit transaction for step 1 --> Begin transaction for step 2 --> Step 2 --> Rollback transaction for step 2 --> etc ... --> End Process (Commit or Rollback ALL commited steps) Can that be done with transaction scopes?   Question: In Flash I have the below function. Now the problem is SaveFurniture, SavePolygons and SaveComments all save to the same XML file. Now SaveFurniture sends JSON encoded data to a ashx handler, which saves it in the xml on the server.   I have two SQL Servers, one for production, and one as an archive. Every night, we've got a SQL job that runs and copies the days production data over to the archive. As we've grown, this process takes longer and longer and longer. When I watch the utilization on the archive server running the archival process, I see that it only ever makes use of a single core. And since this box has eight cores, this is a huge waste of resources. The job runs at 3AM, so it's free to take any and all resources it can find. So what I need to do if figure out how to structure SQL Server jobs so they can take advantage of multiple cores, but I can't find any literature on tackling this problem. We're running SQL Server 2005, but I could certainly push for an upgrade if 2008 takes of this problem.

  I am trying to see if my understanding of "othello" fame is correct or not. According to the rules, we flip the dark/light sides if we get some sequence like X000X = XXXXX. The question I have is if in the process of flipping 0-X or X- 0, do we also need to consider the rows/columns/diagonals of newly flipped elements? e.g. consider board state as shown in above image(New element X is placed @ 2,3) When we update board, we mark elements from 2,3 to 6,3 as Xs but in this process elements like horizontal 4,3 to 4,5 and diagonal 2,3 to 4,5 are also eligible for update? so do we update those elements as well? or just the elements which have starting as 2,3 (i.e update rows/column/diagonal whose starting point is the element we are dealing with, in our case 2,3?) Please help me understand it

  I am working on unix. I want to knwo the current cpu usage of a process. I understood that ps give the average of cpu used till the process is up - it is not the current usage. Is there a way to print only the cpu from the top command without 10 more parameters and headers? I know how to do it with awk - this is not the way i want to do it. top -p 20705 -bc -n 1 | tail -n 2 | awk '{ print $9}' | head -n 1 If there is another simple way to do it, not reading /proc/stat... If there is a simple way doing it from c++, it is also ok.

  In VB.NET, it is entirely possible to pass an integer as a string parameter to a method without calling .ToString() - it's even possible to call .ToString without the ()'s. The code will run without a problem, VB will interpret the integer as a string without having been told to. In C#, these would cause compilation errors - you are required to call .ToString() and to call it correctly in that situation before it will compile. Is there a way to make the VB compilation process check for the same things as the C# compilation process? Would it be best practice in a mixed team to force this check?

  I use ruby 1.9.3p194 (2012-04-20) [i386-mingw32] on Windows7 To do mySQL backup I run runas /savecred /user:yogurt\administrator "cmd.exe /k mysqldump --user=#{dbuser} --password=#{dbpassword} #{dbname} > #{dump}" - mysqldump must be executed as administrator. I do not run my ruby scripts under administrator account. runas starts new cmd.exe and ruby doesn't wait for it to finish. Dump process takes about one minute to finish. After that I zip the dump file and delete it. But I have to make sure that the dump process already finished before I do any other action on that file. Right now I use sleep(60) that works but I wonder if there any better more systematic solution.
