  To my current knowledge Ruby classes defined with Class.new should not differ from classes created with the class keyword. Then why do following classes B and C behave differently? class A TEST = 'A' def test TEST end end class B < A def test TEST end end C = Class.new(A) { def test TEST end } puts 'A: ' + A.new.test # => "A: A" puts 'B: ' + B.new.test # => "B: A" puts 'C: ' + C.new.test # => uninitialized constant TEST (NameError) Tested with ruby 1.9.3p327 and ruby 1.8.7p358.

• Can hash tables really be O(1)

  It seems to be common knowledge that hash tables can achieve O(1) but that has never made sense to me. Can someone please explain it? A. The value is an int smaller than the size of the hash table, so the value is its own hash, so there is no hash table but if there was it would be O(1) and still be inefficient. B. You have to calculate the hash, so the order is O(n) for the size of the data being looked up. The lookup might be O(1) after you do O(n) work, but that still comes out to O(n) in my eyes. And unless you have a perfect hash or a large hash table there are probably several items per bucket so it devolves into a small linear search at some point anyway. I think hash tables are awesome, but I do not get the O(1) designation unless it is just supposed to be theoretical.

I don't want to take the short path by learning how to apply algorithms "as-is" but would rather like to know the foundation and fundamentals behind them. For that I need Math, at which I'm pretty "basic". I'm considering getting tuition's for that. What I would like is to have a concise syllabus/set of topics/book which I could hand over to my math tutor to get started. HIGHLY DESIRED: one book. the silver bullet. (fingers crossed!)   I know this question was here a lot of times and can't be answered at all, but im not looking for a single name, but rather for an advice in my situation. I learned programming with Java and now I'm developing in Java for more or less 5 years (at the university) and I thinks my programming skills their are really ok/average. I have also small experience in C/C++ and C#. Now I have some spare time and I'd like to learn a new language or deepen the knowledge of Java/C/C++. But how to choose the right language to learn? I'd like to learn a language which will be usefull in the future concerning working in a software development business? I know there is no single answer, but I'm sure you could mention some languages that are more usefull than others.

• Guaranteed way to force application running continuously (overriding taskkill, task manager etc.)

  I have a C# security/monitoring application that I need to have running no matter what. However, I can not remove privileges or restrict access to parts of the OS (Windows). I thought of having a protection service running which monitors continuously if an application is running, and starts it back up when the application is killed somehow, while the application monitors the protection service and starts the service if the service is killed. To my knowledge you can't simultaneously kill multiple processes at the same time. Any better idea to guarantee that an application is always running?

• The right way to implement communication between java objects

  I'm working on an academic project which simulates a rather large queuing procedure in java. The core of the simulator rests within one package where there exist 8 classes each one implementing a single concept. Every class in the project follows SRP. These classes encapsulate the behavior of the simulator and inter-connect every other class in the project. The problem that I has arisen is that most of these 8 classes are, as is logical i think, tightly coupled and each one has to have working knowledge of every other class in this package in order to be able to call methods from it when needed. The application needs only one instance of each class so it might be better to create static fields for each class in a new class and use that to make calls -instead of preserving a reference in each class for every other class in the package (which I'm certain that is incorrect)-, but is this considered a correct design solution? or is there a design pattern maybe that better suits my needs?

• How can I convert my Stream (image data) back into a file

  I have a WCF restful service that I'm trying to upload an image to. I have a very basic metod that accepts a stream as it's only parameter and is defined in the contract as: [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(UriTemplate = "ReviewImage", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Bare, Method = "POST")] ReviewImage UploadImage(Stream data); I'm actually consuming this service from flash (which is fairly inconsequntial) which selects a file from the file system and uploads it through the service url. It all works seems to work, adding a breakpoint to the UploadImage method breaks as expected. If I wanted to save this file back to disk, is it just a case of reading this Stream object into a FileStream object that creates the file somewhere? A bit like the this? When i do actually do this the file can not be opened as an image. I'm sure i'm missing a key piece of knowledge here. Does my stream actually contain just the image bytes or does it contain more than that?

• Android Java Eclipse Intent with 2 Projects

  Good day! I have 2 Projects in my Eclipse. MainActivity1 and MainActivity2 are the names of the activities. The MainActivity2 is connected to the MainActivity1 via Project in the properties of the MainActivity1. So far, I can call the package of the MainActivity2 from the MainActivity1. Now, below are my problem: I have a button in MainActivity1. What I want to do is after I click on the button in the MainActivity1, it runs the MainActivity2 project and some variables will be passed on to the MainActivity2. I've been searching in google for a while now and I couldn't get the right keyword for it. I've checked some of the questions here in StackOverflow but I'm unable to locate the problem similar to mine with calling and running the MainActivity2 class from the MainActivity1.java I'm a noob in Android Java but have knowledge in other OOP. • Outlook 2010 Populating a Text Box

  all! I'll try to be as detailed as possible in describing my predicament. I have a little background knowledge in Visual Basic, but none really in VBA or VBscript in Outlook 2010. I'm working with Outlook 2010. I created a custom form (this is my first time). I have a combo box named ComboBox1 and a text box named TextBox1. I am trying to auto-populate TextBox1 with a number based on the selection made from ComboBox1 (ex. I select Value 1 from ComboBox1 and TextBox1 populates with 124). I made an attempt using this code in the Visual Basic Editor (VBA version 7.0): Sub popBox() If ComboBox1 = "Value 1" Then TextBox1 = "124" End If End Sub My question is what am I doing wrong? Should I be using the VBscript editor, or is using VBA the proper thing to do? Is what I am asking even possible? Thank you all in advance!

• many-to-many relationship in CI (not using ORM)

  I'm implementing a categories system in my CI app and trying to work out the best way of working with many to many relationships. I'm not using an ORM at this stage, but could use say Doctrine if necessary. Each entry may have multiple categories. I have three tables (simplified) Entries: entryID, entryName Categories: categoryID, categoryname Entry_Category: entryID, categoryID my CI code returns a record set like this: entryID, entryName, categoryID, categoryName but, as expected with Many-to-Many relationships, each "entry" is repeated for each "category". What would the best way to "group" the categories so that when I output the results, I am left with something like: Entry Name Appears in Category: Foo, Bar rather than: Entry Name Appears in Category: Foo Entry Name Appears in Category: Bar I believe the option is to track if the post ID matches a previous entry, and if so, store the respective category, and output it as one, rather than several, but am unsure of how to do this in CI. thanks for any pointers (I appreciate this is may be a vague/complex question without a better knowledge of the system).

  I want to program graphical 2D games more complex than the basic 2D stuff I already know. I don't want to do 3D programming. Just more complex 2D stuff. I dropped high school before I could learn a lot of stuff so I walked away with enough algebra knowledge to balance my checkbook and do some light 2D Cartesian programming. Are there any good resources out there for a guy with a limited attention span (say 20 minutes apiece for a subject I'm keenly interested in) to learn, gradually, how to do something more useful with math in programming?

• Dynamic web widget

  My vendor offers a widget creation service where I can login to their page, set initial values of a search form, after the save button is clicked, I can copy & paste the script code on my website to display a product search result widget. I am thinking to change this static widget to a dynamic one. Since my programming knowledge is limited, can experts tell me if it's possible to login https remotely (using cURL) and set search form values equal to values on my page (every time my page content changes, it will change the form value), then save the form. So the widget script I pasted on my page will always be refreshed to new search result. So the issue will involve cross domain, form submission & server/browser communication. I know a little jQuery, PHP, Ajax, cURL but so far I stuck with just having an idea but not really sure how to implement it.

• Is it easier to create a chat client using java or PHP?

  first off, my goal: Create a chat client that requires the user to log in with a password. Would it be easier to create it with just HTML an PHP or java? EDIT: Sorry, I didn't mention. I have some experience in javascript. I'm afraid that is all. I could and would learn another language. • SVN / Tortoise SVN - Cannot checkout, Access is denied

  We are having a strange problem with our SVN repository One particular project is failing to check out on some dev's workstations. The error is: svn: E720005: Can't open file 'C:\path\.svn\pristine\4e\4e576fad0f625706379863e6051aac33097dbee0.svn-base': Access is denied. All branches, tags and trunk fail at the same point of checkout Other projects in the repository can be checked out fine One of our devs can check out the problem project fine. We have tried 3 different versions of TortoiseSVN (both UI and command line) and another build of win32svn. The one who can check out is using the same client version as one who cannot. Any ideas?

• Redmine on Apache2 with Passenger issue

  I installed Redmine and run it in Apache2 with the Passenger module. Apache2 boots, Passenger module gets loaded and the Redmine welcome page is shown, however when trying to login or navigate to other parts of the Redmine site, the browser keeps loading and loading and loading forever, although the Redmine production.log indicates redirects and HTTP 200 codes in the header, so everything seems to work correctly according to the log. I tested in various browsers. Does anyone have an idea what could be wrong? I will add apache configuration and some relevant log snippets from both apache and redmine hereafter.   For a very specific software application, we maintain a base of machines running fvwm 2.5. To update the menu structure, the fvwm2rc default config file is replaced during the update process performed by a package management system. To enable the new menu structure after an update, the user has to manually perform an action: Restart machine, re-login, restart fvwm. The preferred action is to choose "Window Manager Restart Fvwm2" since no login is needed then and even the windows survive. Question: How can I invoke an equivalent action as "Restart Fvwm2" from the command line or the package management system? The following command does not work (neither do similar ones): fvwm -c "Restart" [FVWM][SetupICCCM2]: <<ERROR>> another ICCCM 2.0 compliant WM is running, try -replace "-replace" is no option since one needs to log in again after calling it.

• Using Synology NAS attached to WDS-Repeater

  I'm using the following devices for my home network: Router 1: Speedport W 723 V (192.168.2.1) Router 2: AVM Fritzbox 3270 (192.168.2.2) NAS: Synology DS 207+(192.168.2.3) I successfully set up a WDS connection between the two routers. The Speedport acts as basestation, the Fritzbox repeats the WIFI signal of the Speedport. Everything fine, so far. Now I'm trying to achieve the following: Client → Speedport (Base) → Fritzbox (Repeater) → Synology NAS I want to use my Synology NAS attached to the Fritzbox (which is in repeating mode). I already gave it a static IP (as written above) but all connection attempts failed. Did I miss something out or is this set-up simply impossible?

• Unable to configure DD-WRT SNMP monitoring with Zabbix

  Installed Zabbix on Ubuntu but not sure what setting I missed. Base on my concept, I would like to using SNMP to monitoring DD-WRT router which it using SNMP service. I did enable to SNMP service at DD-WRT router page. And also created a host at Zabbix with included DD-WRT template. After I done it I still unable to get any connection/information at Zabbix which mean the router doesn't communicate with Zabbix. • How to upgrade ClamAV on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS?

  I'm running a server on Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS, and when I installed ClamAV via aptitude, it installed version 0.94. That version has now been EOL'ed, but when I run "aptitude upgrade", it doesn't update ClamAV to the more recent version (0.96). I then followed these instructions on Installing ClamAV from the PPA, but when I did that, I get a message saying "The following packages have been kept back: ... clamav clamav-base clamav-daemon clamav-freshclam ..." Does anyone know how to get Ubuntu 8.04 to do this update via aptitude or apt-get (I'm hoping to avoid having to compile from source, etc.)?
