  • What's the best way to store sort order in SQL?

    - by Duracell
The guys at the top want sort order to be customizable in our app. So I have a table that effectively defines the data type. What is the best way to store our sort order. If I just created a new column called 'Order' or something, every time I updated the order of one row I imagine I would have to update the order of every row to ensure posterity. Is there a better way to do it?

  • Temporarily impersonate and enable privileges?

    - by Luke
We maintain a DLL that does a lot of system-related things; traversing the file system, registry, etc. The callers of this DLL may or may not be using impersonation. In order to better support all possible scenarios I'm trying to modify it to be smarter. I'll use the example of deleting a file. Currently we just call DeleteFile(), and if that fails that's the end of that. I've come up with the following: BOOL TryReallyHardToDeleteFile(LPCTSTR lpFileName) { // 1. caller without privilege BOOL bSuccess = DeleteFile(lpFileName); DWORD dwError = GetLastError(); if(!bSuccess && dwError == ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED) { // failed with access denied; try with privilege DWORD dwOldRestorePrivilege = 0; BOOL bHasRestorePrivilege = SetPrivilege(SE_RESTORE_NAME, SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED, &dwOldRestorePrivilege); if(bHasRestorePrivilege) { // 2. caller with privilege bSuccess = DeleteFile(lpFileName); dwError = GetLastError(); SetPrivilege(SE_RESTORE_NAME, dwOldRestorePrivilege, NULL); } if(!bSuccess && dwError == ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED) { // failed with access denied; if caller is impersonating then try as process HANDLE hToken = NULL; if(OpenThreadToken(GetCurrentThread(), TOKEN_QUERY | TOKEN_IMPERSONATE, TRUE, &hToken)) { if(RevertToSelf()) { // 3. process without privilege bSuccess = DeleteFile(lpFileName); dwError = GetLastError(); if(!bSuccess && dwError == ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED) { // failed with access denied; try with privilege bHasRestorePrivilege = SetPrivilege(SE_RESTORE_NAME, SE_PRIVILEGE_ENABLED, &dwOldRestorePrivilege); if(bHasRestorePrivilege) { // 4. process with privilege bSuccess = DeleteFile(lpFileName); dwError = GetLastError(); SetPrivilege(SE_RESTORE_NAME, dwOldRestorePrivilege, NULL); } } SetThreadToken(NULL, hToken); } CloseHandle(hToken); hToken = NULL; } } } if(!bSuccess) { SetLastError(dwError); } return bSuccess; } So first it tries as the caller. If that fails with access denied, it temporarily enables privileges in the caller's token and tries again. If that fails with access denied and the caller is impersonating, it temporarily unimpersonates and tries again. If that fails with access denied, it temporarily enables privileges in the process token and tries again. I think this should handle pretty much any situation, but I was wondering if there was a better way to achieve this? There are a lot of operations that we would potentially want to use this method (i.e. pretty much any operation that accesses securable objects).

  • Getting CoreMIDI to work in snow leopard with SimpleSynth

    - by suman-gurung
I have been trying to follow the steps in the book Ruby Practical Project - making music with ruby and was trying to get CoreMIDI and output some notes using SimpleSynth. I can connect to the destination but when i do something like midi = LiveMIDI.new midi.note_on(0, 60, 100) I get no output from the sound system. Has anyone tried the code and faced similar situation?? And also What are the better libraries for music programming in Ruby?

  • 'Overwrite' php.ini settings

    - by incrediman
I have a folder, and for all php files in that folder (or even better, in that folder or any folders within it) I'd like to make some changes to the php settings. Can I just place a php.ini file in that folder with those settings I'd like to change? If so, any reason why this wouldn't be working for me? It's my own server. Thanks!

  • Entity Framework ObjectContext re-usage

    - by verror
I'm learning EF now and have a question regarding the ObjectContext: Should I create instance of ObjectContext for every query (function) when I access the database? Or it's better to create it once (singleton) and reuse it? Before EF I was using enterprise library data access block and created instance of dataacess for DataAccess function...

  • How do you distinguish your EC2 instances?

    - by Erik
The ec2-describe-instances command is not very helpful in distinguishing the instances. Are there command line tools that give a better overview? Perhaps somewhat like http://github.com/newbamboo/manec2 but with support for different regions etc.

Most of my team members either do UML (.NET developers) or they do ER (database developers) Can you please recommend a tool for me which can do both of these type of diagrams? Please don't recommend Visio because my team already evaluated it and everyone disliked it as either a UML or ER diagram tool.

  • What is the best way to handle this type of inclusive logic in Ruby?

    - by Steve McLelland
Is there a better way of handling this in Ruby, while continuing to use the symbols? pos = :pos1 # can be :pos2, :pos3, etc. if pos == :pos1 || pos == :pos2 || pos == :pos3 puts 'a' end if pos == :pos1 || pos == :pos2 puts 'b' end if pos == :pos1 puts 'c' end The obvious way would be swapping out the symbols for number constants, but that's not an option. pos = 3 if pos >= 1 puts 'a' end if pos >= 2 puts 'b' end if pos >= 3 puts 'c' end Thanks.

  • How do I register a server side click on an HTMLGenericControl?

    - by Brian Scott
I'm looking for a reliable mechanism to generate a server side postback handler for an HTMLGenericControl such as an . I have some markup that I do not wish to change and would prefer to treat this in the same fashion as a standard .Net server control. Also, I know I can use a template based control to place some .Net controls within the markup as hidden and then trigger their click events from a client side click proxy. However, I'm really enquiring as to whether this can be done better.
