  • Can't Connect w/ SQL Management Studio After Domain Change

    Our old Small Business Server 2003 (acting as our domain controller) was on the fritz, so we replaced it with a new Windows Server 2008 box and set the server up as our new domain controller. In hindsight, it may have been a mistake, but we set up the new server as a replacement and tried to keep as much the same as possible, including the DOMAIN name. The problem was, that even though the domain name was the same, the guest computers somehow still realized it was not the exact same domain. We had to unjoin and rejoin the domain and port over everyone's documents and settings. This morning, when I attempted to connect to my local SQL Server Instance, it was saying that my login failed. When I tried to use the SQL Management Studio, it throws the error "Package 'Microsoft SQL Management Studio Package' failed to load" on startup, then exits without giving me a chance to change the login. I am using Mixed Authentication and have an administrative account as a backup. Ideas? If there is a more appropriate stack, please let me know where to put it.

  • Shares on Hyper-V Host or Guest?

    I'm about to deploy a Hyper-V Server, that will have 2 local drives: 250GB for VMs, 2TB for Shares. Does Hyper-V Server (standalone, not as a role) allow you to setup Network Shares? Or will I have to setup a VM with the 2TB drive allocated to it, for setting up the Shares? If Hyper-V supports Shares, would there be a performance benefit? The Shares will be used by both the VMs on the Hyper-V Server and other Servers within the Network.

  • MSSQL error: consistency-based I/O error - can it be caused by an MSSQL or OS problem?

    This is what I saw in the windows error log: SQL Server detected a logical consistency-based I/O error: incorrect checksum (expected: 0x19fedd20; actual: 0x19fed5e3). It occurred during a read of page (1:1764) in database ID 6 at offset 0x00000000dc8000 in file 'D:\mssql\local_repository_pbdiffimport.mdf'. Additional messages in the SQL Server error log or system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online. I ran dbcc checkdb which told me I should restore with option REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS, so I eventually ran DBCC CHECKDB (my_db_name, REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS) WITH NO_INFOMSGS But that resulted in about 2'000 rows being lost. I restored a backup but now I'm afraid this will happen again since we already had a consistency problem in the same database about 2 weeks ago but then it happened in an index (recreated indexes solved the problem). We have investigated the discs - RAID5 looks good, no errors, and also none of the disc-check-utilities have revealed any hardware problem. Can this be caused by OS (Windows Server 2003) or by MSSQL (MSSQL Server 2005)?

  • Connect to development server via switch?

    I apologize upfront if this isn't appropriate for superuser. I asked it on serverfault and was told it was too general for that site. I have a laptop with Vista and it receives it's internet connection wireless. I have an old desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition installed and it is setup as a development server with Apache, MySQL, and PHP. This works well, with the server having a static IP address. The server is connected to the router via an Ethernet cable. Is it possible to disconnect the cable that is currently connecting the server and the router, then connect the server and workstation to a switch, so that I am still able to connect to the server via web browser from the workstation? I am trying to eliminate the long ethernet cable connecting the server to the router in the other room. I already have a switch, that is why I asked specifically about it. Thanks and I will be more than happy to clarify!

  • long access times and errors in iis application

    Hi, I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. I have had no other complaints with any other websites, but when trying to use cdw.com the page never loads.     I'm having trouble setting up the trust relationship between a Windows Server 2003 and a Windows Server 2008 AD. Domain a is Windows Server 2003 Forest functional level. Domain b is a Windows Server 2008 Forest functional level. I can set up the incoming side of the trust relationship on domain "a" so that it trusts domain "b". Try as I might on domain "b" I can't set up the outgoing side of the trust relationship to domain "a". The GUI interface gives an unhelpful 'The request is not supported'. I'm not sure netdom is being more or less helpful as it refers me to FilterSIDs netdom trust /add b /uo:b\admin /po:* /d:a /ud:a\admin /pd:* /oneside:trusting To improve the security of this external trust, security identifier (SID) filtering is enabled, however, if users have been migrated to the trusted domain and their SID histories have been preserved, you may choose to turn off this feature. For more information about SID filtering and how to turn it off, see the help for netdom trust /FilterSids or see Help and Support. The request is not supported. The command failed to complete succesfully. I say 'less helpful' because Windows Server 2008 doesn't support the /FilterSIDs option. How can we force creation of this trust?   • C# sends SQL data 4 times less from one box than from another

    W2003, .NET 3.5, SQL 2008 I have prod and UAT app servers deployed in 2 different data centres. I have a C# app which reads text file, parse the text and sends the data to the SQL in bulk. SQL server is in US and the app servers are in London (but in different places). All POPs have dedicated network connections. There is no public internet involved. When the app runs on UAT server I can see in Perfmon that the Send byte/sec is x4 higher than from production server. My estimate is that one server outputs at 1 MB/s and the other at 250 KB/s rate. My suspicion immediately is that there is a router on one of the DCs which shapes traffic or does QoS limitation on traffice from London to US. However support and Windows team and networkig team all are saying that there are no differences in neither networking config on the 2 DCs nor NIC config on the 2 app server... How to find out why is the networking bottlneck is 4 times tighter in one place than in the other? What can I do about it?

  • Is there a way to import a scheduled task from windows 2003 (.job) to windows 2008 (.xml)?

    I had some jobs to be moved from the old production server (windows 2003 server standard) to the new machine (windows 2008 server standard), but the new server is unable to read the old .job format, also the import wizard only imports from .xml job files (same version). Obviously I don't want to rebuild all the jobs by hand, but can't find a tool that makes the process a very little easier. I don't trust in Microsoft for this kind of tools, my previously experiences had been to bad (DTS - SSIS). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

  • DBCC CHECKDB fails and quits job, ambiguous error message.

    I received a notice that one of our servers' DBCC CHECKDB for all databases has been failing the past four times it has been run. We don't have any data prior to that, but it doesn't look like it has been succeeding for awhile. There are no errors in the log file only: DBCC results for 'sys.sysxmlfacet'. [SQLSTATE 01000] Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unspecified error occurred on SQL Server. Connection may have been terminated by the server. [SQLSTATE HY000] There are 112 rows in 1 pages for object "sys.sysxmlfacet". [SQLSTATE 01000] I ran a DBCC CHECKDB using sp_MSForEachDB to get more accurate results and had the same error on the same DB but at a separate point: DBCC results for 'NameValuePair_Greek_CI_AS'. [SQLSTATE 01000] Msg 0, Sev 0, State 1: Unspecified error occurred on SQL Server. Connection may have been terminated by the server. [SQLSTATE HY000] There are 0 rows in 0 pages for object "NameValuePair_Greek_CI_AS". [SQLSTATE 01000] Also, the error-log states that the DBCC completed without errors for this database. I can't figure out how to track down this ambiguous issue that only happens on this database out of the dozens on this server. Any help is appreciated!

    Microsoft offers the standalone Hyper-V server for free. I'm wondering if I can install roles other than the Hyper-V role on this? I know installing other roles alongside Hyper-V is a bad practice, but what I'm trying to ask is if the Hyper-V Server edition of Windows Server allows installation of other roles, like DNS server, File Server etc. Infact I'm not interested in running Hyper-V, just looking for a free windows server to install some roles on.   • Transition from GPO to GPP

    I have a Windows network with a 2003 server as the PDC, and a 2008R2 server as a DC. We have used GPO sparsely when the majority of our workstations were WinXP, but now we have Windows 7 clients and we're having some issues with printer mapping. I'm not quite sure how I would go about taking up GPP, would it involve shifting the PDC over to the 2008R2 server? Any advice on what to do, and how to accomplish it would be very much appreciated.

  • Citrix has issues resolving network shares

    We are having this weird issue with our Citrix (version 4.5) server (sitting on Windows 2003 r2), where a couple users have issues resolving single shared network drive. We use a logon script to map all shared drives. The weird part is that of 3 shared drives, users can access 2, but the 3rd one goes to the old server (even though the logon script points to the new server). And that issues is limited to a few users. I had them log off and re-loggin to no success. It happens just in Citrix. The file server, that is being accessed, is Windows 2008 R2. Like I said we use a logon script to map the network drive. I understand I might be a little confusing, I will gladly reword the post.

  • Using Oracle Data in the Business Rules Engine

    Yesterday I started working on some new functionality that I had planned to implement using the Business Rules Engine.  As I got further into it, I realized that some of my rules were going to need to reference some data that resides in an Oracle database.  I knew the Business Rules Composer supports using DataConnections and TypedDataTables, but I’d never used this functionality myself, so I wasn’t so sure how it would work with Oracle.  As it turns out, it’s very do-able, there’s just little hoop you need to jump through. I fired up BRC and my suspicions were quickly confirmed.  BRC only recognizes SQL Server databases when it comes to editing rules.  Not letting that deter me, I decided to see if I could “trick” BRE into using Oracle data. On my local SQL server, I created a new database and in that database, created a table that matched the schema of the table I wanted to use in the Oracle database.  I then set about creating my rules, referencing the new SQL Server database everywhere I wanted to use Oracle data.  Finally, I created a new class library and added a class that implements Microsoft.RuleEngine.IFactRetriever.  In that class, I added the necessary code to get a DataSet from the Oracle server, wrap it in a TypedDataTable and assert it into the rule engine.  It’s worth pointing out that in my IFactRetriever class, I made sure to set my DataSet name to the name of the database I’d referenced in the BRC and the DataTable’s name to the name of the table that I’d referenced in the BRC. After gac’ing the new class library and deploying my policy, I tested and everything worked as expected.

    Mono is really awesome. Some of our applications worked in linux out of the box even without recompiling the binary. However I am having tough time to configure oracle instantclient to use it with mono. I installed instantclient on a CentOS VM(by installing instantclient rpm) but however I did not find TNSNAMES.ORA anywhere.     I'm doing maintenance work on a Rails site that I inherited; it's driven by an Oracle database, and I've got access to both development and production installations of the site (each with its own Oracle DB). I'm not an Oracle expert; can anyone shed light on why I'd be getting the error in one installation and not the other? Incidentally, both dev and production registration_ownerships tables are populated with lots of data, including duplicate entries for country_ownership_id (driven by index PK_REGISTRATION_OWNERSHIP). Please let me know if you need more information to troubleshoot. I'm sorry I haven't given more already, but I just wasn't sure which details would be helpful.
