• MSSQL EXPRESS 2008 Stored Procedure execution time spikes periodically

  I have a big stored procedure on a MSSQL 2008 Express SP2 database that gets run about every 200 ms. Normal execution time is about 50ms. What I am seeing is large inconsistencies in this run time. It will execute for while, say 50-100 times at 40-60ms which is expected, then seemingly at random the same stored procedure will take way longer, say 900ms or 1.5 seconds to run. Sometimes more than one call of the same procedure in a row will take longer too. It appears that something is causing sql server to slow down dramatically every minute or so, but I can't figure out what. There is no timing pattern between the occurences. I have the same setup on two different computers, one of which is a clean XP Pro load with no virus checking and nothing installed except SQL server. Also, The recovery options for all the databases are set to "Simple".

• How do I get spring to inject my EntityManager?

  I'm following the guide here, but when the DAO executes, the EntityManager is null. I've tried a number of fixes I found in the comments on the guide, on various forums, and here (including this), to no avail. No matter what I seem to do the EntityManager remains null. • How are views constructed in Josh Smith's MVVM sample?

  Being new to both WPF and MVVM, I'm studying Josh Smith's article on the MVVM pattern and the accompanying sample code. I can see that the application is started in app.xaml.cs by constructing a MainWindow object, wiring it to a MainWindowViewModel object and then showing the main window. So far so good. However, I can't find any code which instantiates the AllCustomersView or CustomerView classes. Using "find all references" on the constructors of those views comes up with nothing. What am I missing here?

• Can I ensure, using C#, that an X509Certificate was issued by a trusted authority?

  If I use X509Certificate.CreateFromSignedFile to get the certificate used to sign a file, can I confirm that it was signed by a trusted authority - and isn't just a "self-signed" cert of some kind? I want to extract the "Subject" (company) name from the cert to ensure that an unmanaged DLL I'm using is unmolested (I can't checksum it as it's updated frequently and independently) and official. However, I'm concerned that a fake DLL could be signed with a "self-signed" cert and return the original company's name. So, I want to ensure the the cert was issued by Versign, Thwate or similar (anything installed on the cert repository on the machine will be fine). How can I do this, if at all, when using X509Certificate.CreateFromSignedFile? Or does it do this automatically (i.e. a "self-signed" cert will fail)?

  All I am looking for the best free set of tools to be used in a MS Based build process. Checkout, Build, Package, Test, Deploy, etc. I know this question has been asked before but it was over 2 years ago, and in our world that is an eternity. I am looking to develop a pattern that is easily adapted to similar projects. Almost like a template/cookie cutter system. I am currently looking into using CruiseControl, Powershell, MSBuild suite of tools. If we choose to move to 4.0 will we have issues? Are there better alternatives? Limitations ? Or will these pretty much meet my needs. One piece that i am never happy with is the process of packaging. We actually have opted in the past to just use Visual Studio Deployment Projects but those are very* ancient and my fear is WIX will be too complicated for the people implementing it.

Seriously, wikipedia doesn't cover it well, and I read an article on HN recently comparing git and bzr in some detail, but the author admitted knowing little about mercurial, and the other options didn't get mentioned. (I'm happily using fossil on small win/mac/Linux projects) Please restrict answers to the DVCS aspects of the tool, e.g. The basic unit of vc in hit is the repository- in bazaar it is the branch(http://unspecified.wordpress.com/2010/03/26/why-git-aint-better-than-x/). bugtrackers and wikis are nice, but I'm really interested in the tools themselves, rather than any extras. Unfortunately SO demands a single 'right answer', so I'm making the question community wiki in the hope that users will contribute their knowledge.

• Unexpected result in .NET 4 DirectoryInfo.EnumerateFiles(string)

I would assume that the following call to EnumarateFiles would only return files that match the filename pattern of c* ... however, filenames with H* are still getting returned. For example... the following file will get deleted in the following code (HNNN09060900932.xml). What's the issue?   I can't get Tortoisehg (1.0) to work with subrepos I have a directory structure like this: root .hg .hgsub .hgsubstate Customer1 Project1 .hg foo.txt Project2 .hg Customer2 Project3 .hg the .hgsub file under root looks like Customer1\Project1=Customer1\Project1 Customer1\Project2=Customer1\Project2 Customer2\Project3=Customer2\Project3 If modify the file Customer1\Project1\foo.txt and commit from the root it works >hg ci -m "command line commit" committing subrepository customer1\project1 in Tortoisehg customer1\project1 is displayed with status S (subrepo) but when commiting I get a message abort: customer1/project1: no match under directory! Is this scenario not supported or am I doing something wrong? The doc says: "TortoiseHg 1.0 introduced rudimentary support for subrepositories, and only in the commit / status tool. When Mercurial considers a subrepo as dirty, it will appear in the commit tool as a special entry in the file list with a status of S. If a subrepo is included in the file list of a commit, the subrepo is committed along with the other changes, updating the .hgsubstate file in the main repository root."

  Context A number of my application user configuration files are kept in a git repository for easy sharing across multiple machines and multiple platforms. Amongst these configuration files is .gitconfig which contains the following settings for handling the carriage return linefeed characters [core] autocrlf = true safecrlf = false Problem These settings also gets applied on a GNU/Linux platform which causes obscure errors. Question What are some best practices for handling these platform specific differences in configuration files? Proposed solution I realize this problem could be solved by having a branch for each platform and keeping the common stuff in master and merging with the platform branch when master moves forward. I'm wondering if there are any easier solutions to this problem?

• Gitosis alternative?

  Are there alternatives to gitosis that are easier to use? I currently run gitosis on a Ubuntu server for my lab. We regularly add new users and repos. I find the gitosis.conf syntax non-intuitive, and if I make even a minor mistake the whole gitosis system fails, see for example this question on SO. When gitosis fails it also kills access to the git repository that contains gitosis.conf... go figure... There must be a better way. I've thought about private GitHub accounts, but is there anything else that I could host locally?

• Adding video and flash functionality to the Ajax Control Toolkit HTMLEditor

  Greetings, I'm looking for a way to extend the functionality of the HTMLEditor control that the Ajax Control Toolkit supplies for ASP.net. I would like to add video and flash functionality to the editor (buttons, allowed tags, etc). To my knowledge, this is rather easy: plop in an tag with the correct parameters and it just works; I have videos running in the preview window of the editor. Unfortunately, the tag is stripped away when saving the HTML-code and updating it in the database. Hence, I would like to ask if there is any way of adding this functionality apart from manually adding the changes in the source control repository of the Ajax Control Toolkit and recompiling it. If this is not possible, but can offer some help concerning the implementation of this in the source code, it would also be much appreciated. Thank you for your time :)

  IBM has (had) a free learn-Java program called RoboCode, in which custom robots could be written that would then do battle in a 2D space. I would like to write the environment that supports such robots, but don't know what pattern or design to use. Each robot is a thread. Each thread is given a certain (indeterminate) amount of run-time by the JRE. A robot world engine would start by building a list of the players/robots, then enter a loop that allows each player in turn to do whatever it likes: move forward, turn left, fire toward the northwest corner, whatever. Each robot is also informed of events of interest: an enemy or several enemies are within range, it has been hit by a bullet, etc. The combination of handling threads that are also event listeners (are they also producers?) confuses me; it seems that there's more to the game engine. Even some general ideas would help. TIA.

• Neural Network Output Grouping 0.5?

  I tried to write a Neural Network system, but even running through simple AND/OR/NOR type problems, the outputs seem to group around 0.5 (for a bias of -1) and 0.7 (for a bias of 1). It doesn't look exactly "wrong"... The 1,1 in the AND pattern does seem higher than the rest and the 0,0 in the OR looks lower, but they are still all grouped so it's debatable. I was wondering a) if there's some obvious mistake I've made or b) if there's any advice for debugging Neural Nets... seeing as you can't always track back exactly where an answer came from...   What is the best approach for navigating between UserControls/Pages(out of browser experience)? I'm fairly new to Silverlight and even newer to the mvvm pattern. How well does the Navigation Framework Integrate with the MVVM Light Toolkit? A snippet for general application flow control with the two would be great. The plan was to use the Navigation Framework for general flow or using Jeremy Likeness's approach to region management(http://csharperimage.jeremylikness.com/search/label/regions) and swapping out regions as needed. • Fastest way to convert datatable to generic list

  I have a data tier select method that returns a datatable. It's called from a business tier method that should then return a strongly typed generic List. What I want to do is very similar (but not the same as) this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/208532/how-do-you-convert-a-datatable-into-a-generic-list What's different is that I want the list to contain strongly-typed objects rather than datarows (also, I don't have linq avaiable here yet). I'm concerned about performance. The business tier method will in turn be called from the presentation tier, and the results will be iterated for display to the user. It seems very wasteful to add an extra iteration at the business tier, only do it again right away for the presentation, so I want this to be as quick as possible. This is a common task, so I'm really looking for a good pattern that can be repeated over and over.

  Hi, In the Unity PerThreadLifetimeManager documentation, I read that: "This lifetime manager does not dispose the instances it holds". Ref.: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff647854.aspx So, if I am using a ThreadPool, does it mean that objects resolved using Unity on a Thread of the ThreadPool will not get disposed at the end of the work done in that thread before being returned to the pool?   When custom class loader in webapp context file is used and the context is being initialized and started, the custom classloader is just a substitution for the default webapp class loader, right ? But what are the consequences of doing this? Because, for instance, in Liferay portal an application can use custom PortalClassLoader, which just extends webapp class loader and does nothing else, it's the same class, no modifications at all. And I didn't find any following initializations like repository location changes etc. The point is, that the PortalClassLoader provides the webapp with an access to the ROOT portal context, which AFAIK doesn't use PortalClassLoader, according to debugger.

• Subclipse RAD 7 cannot compare JS

  Hi, I cant seem to compare two JS files (one edited locally and the latest version from the repository when doing Team Synch or Compare With) using Subversion in IBM RAD 7. I have used Subclipse as a plugin version 1.6.8. I have totally downgraded to Subclipse 1.6.5 because my team mate's IDE (also RAD 7) is working fine on this subclipse version when comparing JS files. I have also looked up and seems we have both the same version of RAD 7. Frantically looked for solutions on the net and found nothing. Sorry if this is the place to look for support. I was attempting to upgrade my RAD but darn the fix packs are so huge even for a little fixes (other fixes I mean)(shoo IBM). Does anyone have a workaround?

  I'm using git-cvs, and my general workflow is something like this: ...write some code... $ git commit $ git cvsexportcommit -c -p -v <asdf> $ git cvs-import $CVSROOT $ git pull This generally works fine for pushing my commits back to the CVS server and keeping things in sync. However, I'm wondering how I will realize that something is missing if I happen to do the "git commit" but forget to export it to the CVS server. Is there a reasonable way to get a diff between my git repository and the CVS server, so I would know that something hadn't been committed all the way through? Or perhaps there's a better method of doing this altogether?

I keep thinking that there must be a better way to express what I want and that I'm probably doing it the wrong way. The code that I'm writing is in the following form: # foo is a dictionary if foo.has_key(bar): foo[bar] += 1 else: foo[bar] = 1 I'm writing this a lot in my programs. My first reaction is to push it out to a helper function, but so often the python libraries supply things like this already. Is there some simple little syntax trick that I'm missing? Or is this the way that it should be done?

What I really would like is something like dictionary.GetValueOrDefault(key) Now, I could write an extension method for the dictionary class that does this for me, but I figured that I might be missing something that already exists. SO, is there a way to do this in a way that is more "easy on the eyes" without writing an extension method to dictionary?
