I have learned quite a bit browsing through Hidden Features
of C# and was surprised when I couldn't find something
similar for VB.NET.
So what are some of its hidden or lesser known features?
We are implementing a single sign on mechanism in an enterprise environment, where the token is shared between applications using HTTP header. Now, in order to do the integration test, I need to write an application to simulate this.
Is there any way in ASP.NET where I can redirect to another web-page and pass a custom HTTP header in the process?
Thanks
If I control both applications, what is the best way to communicate between 2 exe's written in VB.Net. For example, I want to drop an XML file from one app, and pick it up with the other, but I do not want poll for the file. I've heard of named pipes, but I found it was complicated. What's the most effecient way to do this?
We are working on exception handling with ASP.NET web applications (with C# language). Would you please let me know the best practices of Exception handling?
Correct me if I'm wrong - I understand a C#/.NET application's .csproj project file is effectively its makefile or build file.
A Website project does not have a .csproj file (not to be mixed up with Web Application which does). In the case of a Website project, can I create a makefile equivalent, or does it use a build process/instructions stored elsewhere in the system or app?
i want to create a schedule for my windows media player instance in form in vb.net so that to arrange and play them according to time automatically how can i do that..

I am currently html encoding all user entered text before inserting/updating a db table record. The problem is that on any subsequent updates, the previously encoded string is reencoded. This endless loop is starting to eat up alot of column space in my tables. I am using parameterized queries for all sql statements but am wondering would it be safe to just let the .NET Framework handle this part without the HTML Encoding?
With windows and sql server accounts, I can access the logged in user with functions like: user_name() or suser_sname().
Can I access the user that is logged into asp.net in the same way?
The MSDN documentation for using an asynchronous controller mentions choosing an asynchronous controller when you want to provide a way for users to cancel requests.
I couldn't find any documentation related to actually allowing users to cancel asynchronous requests, however. Is there a way to indicate to ASP.Net and/or the MVC framework that a request should be canceled?
hi everyone.
Do i need to install .net frame work 1.1 and 2.0 before i install later versions (3.0)??

Hi,
I'm trying to consume WCF service using asp.net2.0
Here are some details:
1) WCF service hosted on different server IIS
URL : http://myserver/Service.svc
2) Web.config
3) asp.net page
4) myjs.js
MYNameSpace.IService.MyMethod();
*** here it throws error that 'MyNameSpace' is not defined.
Everything works fine on my local machine.
Problem when I try to consume from asp.net2.0 application
Any inputs will be truly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Is there a port of the CAG event aggregator for .net 3.5/2.0 that can be "dropped-in" ?
Or any other Event Broker / Aggregator which preferably supports string based event pub/sub
thanks
I have a Asp.net web service running on www.domain.com/Service.svc that I connect to using jQuery from my asp.net website. Everything works perfect if the user access my website with www.domain.com. But if the user uses only domain.com I get error:
There was no channel actively listening at 'http://domain.com/Service.svc/get?date=2010-10-09'.
This is often caused by an incorrect address URI. Ensure that the address to which
the message is sent matches an address on which a service is listening.
In my web.config I use the serviceHostingEnvironment tag to get the service running on my webhost (it doesn't work otherwise). Maybe this is what causes the error?
Here is my system.serviceModel in web.config (I had some problems setting up the web service so that's why my web.config might be a bit messy:
<system.serviceModel>
<behaviors>
<endpointBehaviors>
<behavior name="ServiceAspNetAjaxBehavior">
<enableWebScript />
</behavior>
</endpointBehaviors>
<serviceBehaviors>
<behavior name="ServiceBehavior">
<serviceDebug includeExceptionDetailInFaults="true" />
</behavior>
</serviceBehaviors>
</behaviors>
<serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true">
<baseAddressPrefixFilters>
<add prefix="http://www.domain.com"/>
</baseAddressPrefixFilters>
</serviceHostingEnvironment>
<services>
<service behaviorConfiguration="ServiceBehavior" name="Service">
<endpoint address="" behaviorConfiguration="ServiceAspNetAjaxBehavior"
binding="webHttpBinding" bindingConfiguration="ServiceBinding" contract="Service" />
</service>
</services>
<bindings>
<webHttpBinding>
<binding name="ServiceBinding" maxBufferPoolSize="1000000" maxReceivedMessageSize="1000000">
<readerQuotas maxDepth="1000000" maxStringContentLength="1000000"
maxArrayLength="1000000" maxBytesPerRead="1000000" maxNameTableCharCount="1000000" />
</binding>
</webHttpBinding>
</bindings>
</system.serviceModel>
How can I make it possible for my users to access my webservice also when using only domain.com?
I have seen at least two ways to include an external log4net config file in an ASP.NET web application:
Having the following attribute in your AssemblyInfo.cs file:
[assembly: log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator(ConfigFile = "Log.config", Watch = true)]
Calling the XmlConfigurator in the Global.asax.cs:
protected void Application_Start()
{
XmlConfigurator.Configure(new FileInfo("Log.config"));
}
What would be the best practice to do it?
I have this function in .net code:
public class StringGenerator
{
public static string GenerateString(string hash)
{
return hash.GetHashCode();
}
}
I want to be able to call this from PHP page. Any idea how?
I need to call an API that's all in java from an existing .NET codebase. What's the best approach here? Writing a webservice in java that basically just forwards the calls to the API - or going with something like JNI4NET?
I'm playing around with declarative / delayed computation, where expressions are built up into a directed acyclic graph. Microsoft's GPU Accelerator does something similar.
Are there any libraries available for .Net languages that makes it easier to build a representation of the computation?
Hi,
does anyone have any idea how I can get started building a search engine for my asp.net mvc site using entity framework. I plan to build something like: http://www.carsguide.com.au/search/?N=4294962119++492&type=cars
there on the left there is a refine search option panel.
What's the best approach to design a model for the UI and optimized query with entity framework.
Hi all, I have created a basic chart in VB.NET (VS 2008) and it is working good, but I would like to label the axies of the chart. The method "AxisLabel" is not what I am looking for. I want to put the word "Dollars" vertically on the far left hand side of my chart (just left of the numbers labeling the "y" axis) and the word "Months" horizontally at the bottom of the chart but above the legend (just below the numbers labeling the "x" axis). Check the picture out...
Hi everybody,
I need to write an asp.net application which have to handle very large amount of data per second. Probably max5000 user may transact in same time. I think I will use WCF in back to communicate SQL server. But in front ISS can handle 5000 user in same time effectively or is there any simple way to host my application outside of IIS
How do I change a local user account password remotely using VB.NET/C#?
I have looked into the DirectoryEntry class and know how to add users to a group but cannot figure out how to change a (local) password.
What are your opinions on using web controls in an MVC context?
I came across a good discussion here http://odetocode.com/Blogs/scott/archive/2009/04/09/asp-net-mvc-controls-and-good-versus-evil.aspx but would like to know what the community thinks.
Why does the property SessionID on the Session-object in an ASP.NET-page change between requests?
I have a page like this:
...
<div>
SessionID: <%= SessionID %>
</div>
...
And the output keeps changing every time I hit F5, independent of browser.
I've seen this work correctly in other projects.
