  • what is a squeeze page?

    - by Steve
I've been reading a marketing book which suggests building a squeeze page to build an email list. Does this mean one of those long sales letter type pages with crumby styling? I'm assuming the styling does not have to be generic, or does it? Or, if the sales letter is not a squeeze page, what is a squeeze page? Is there an easy way to build one, and what considerations should be undertaken when building one?

  • SMTP POP3 & PST. Acronyms from Hades.

    - by mikef
A busy SysAdmin will occasionally have reason to curse SMTP. It is, certainly, one of the strangest events in the history of IT that such a deeply flawed system, designed originally purely for campus use, should have reached its current dominant position. The explanation was that it was the first open-standard email system, so SMTP/POP3 became the internet standard. We are, in consequence, dogged with a system with security weaknesses so extreme that messages are sent in plain text and you have no real assurance as to who the message came from anyway (SMTP-AUTH hasn't really caught on). Even without the security issues, the use of SMTP in an office environment provides a management nightmare to all commercial users responsible for complying with all regulations that control the conduct of business: such as tracking, retaining, and recording company documents. SMTP mail developed from various Unix-based systems designed for campus use that took the mail analogy so literally that mail messages were actually delivered to the users, using a 'store and forward' mechanism. This meant that, from the start, the end user had to store, manage and delete messages. This is a problem that has passed through all the releases of MS Outlook: It has to be able to manage mail locally in the dreaded PST file. As a stand-alone system, Outlook is flawed by its neglect of any means of automatic backup. Previous Outlook PST files actually blew up without warning when they reached the 2 Gig limit and became corrupted and inaccessible, leading to a thriving industry of 3rd party tools to clear up the mess. Microsoft Exchange is, of course, a server-based system. Emails are less likely to be lost in such a system if it is properly run. However, there is nothing to stop users from using local PSTs as well. There is the additional temptation to load emails into mobile devices, or USB keys for off-line working. The result is that the System Administrator is faced by a complex hybrid system where backups have to be taken from Servers, and PCs scattered around the network, where duplication of emails causes storage issues, and document retention policies become impossible to manage. If one adds to that the complexity of mobile phone email readers and mail synchronization, the problem is daunting. It is hardly surprising that the mood darkens when SysAdmins meet and discuss PST Hell. If you were promoted to the task of tormenting the souls of the damned in Hades, what aspects of the management of Outlook would you find most useful for your task? I'd love to hear from you. Cheers, Michael

    - by jjesse

A Google of things doesn't give me very good information so turning here to ask the gurus. System information: Running Kubuntu 11.04 and would like to use Kontact (KMail) to connect to work. Also would like to avoid installing GNOME if possible. Connecting to Exchange 2010 and I don't have access to change anything on the Exchange server Thanks in advance

  • windows azure thoughts.

    - by foxjazz
Well I had a relatively unpleasant exprience with Microsoft's new offerings when it comes to azure. And of course they deleted the forum trail. They don't want the consumer as a customer, expect to pay $200 - $250 or more a year for azure and that doesn't include a good email solution. This is for the smallest slice offering. If you want a simple website solution 1and1.com isn't a bad choice and it's less than $50 a year.

  • How can I remove the IM status entries from the messaging indicator?

    - by spoonfood
On 11.10: I know how to remove the email & u1 entries using blacklist/remove from /usr/share/blablabla_youknowwhere but I see no entries or solutions on how to remove only the status entries, as I dont use any IMs, only mail & u1. I suspect its hardcoded, please let me be wrong. but if it is so, maybe someone enlightened got a diff/patch, although I fear it will lead to dependency hell (compiling wise)

  • SEO Providers - Freelancers, Professionals, Or Spam Artists?

Again, many of these offers you'll receive look legit enough. They come complete from a real email address, with a realistic name, a real phone number, and all of the other necessary credentials to look respectable. Sure, they're real people on the other end of the line, but unlike most reputable freelancers in the SEO business, these folks have chosen to use dubious tactics (sending mass emails and spam) to thousands and thousands of people in the hopes that one or two follow up and fall into the trap.

  • SEO Secrets an SEO Specialist Won't Want You to Know About

The market place for self claimed 'SEO secrets' is littered with shoddy SEO specialists and cowboys trying to push the common information available to anyone with a computer, internet connection, and a search engine. Here's the breaking news people - there is no secret email that Google sends out to these SEO specialists, and they don't keep a stack of top secret documents back just for the lucky few. It just doesn't work like that.

  • Auditing DDL Changes in SQL Server databases

Even where Source Control isn't being used by developers, it is still possible to automate the process of tracking the changes being made to a database and put those into Source Control, in order to track what changed and when. You can even get an email alert when it happens. With suitable scripting, you can even do it if you don't have direct access to the live database. Grant shows how easy this is with SQL Compare.

  • How do I configure multiple domain names on my IIS server? [closed]

    - by Dillie-O
We have a few websites that we are running on one instance of IIS that need to be mapped for each of their domain names. For example. Site A has the domain name coolness.com Site B has the domain name 6to8Weeks.com Site C has the domain name PhatTech.com When I look at the "Web Site Identification" section of the IIS configuration window, I notice that I can specify an IP address and port, but if I click the Advanced button, I can also configure the site based on host header values as well. How do I configure each site in IIS? Ideally I would like them to all be able to listen to port 80, so I don't have weird URLs, but I'm not sure if I do this using headers, IP addresses, both, or something else.

  • Cannot make NVIDIA driver work with Ubuntu 12.10

    - by user1293231
I seem to have a problem similar to many but I didn't manage to get it solved: have a Lenovo N581 with an NVIDIA GeForce 610M have just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 64 bits, + KDE and am trying to have my NVIDIA card work. Have tried all workarounds posted: purge nvidia, install kernel source/headers and then reinstall nvidia-current-updates (or just nvidia-current), do "sudo nvidia-xconfig". It does create a xorg.conf but does not much (no Module Section by the way). The result is that my system (jokey) tells me that the driver is there but not in use and I only get a 640x480 resolution. If I try to launch nvidia-settings it does indeed tell me that the nvidia driver is not used. I do all this under kde but I guess it does matter at this stage. Any hint of how to resolve this? I feel stuck and cannot use any of the acceleration which is partly why I got that laptop in the first place... thanks for any help/advise you may provide!

  • lead capture apps

    - by Steve
I'd like to build a lead capture website, where a visitor is required to enter their name and email address in order to receive a free report for download. Do you know of an app which will let me store captured information in a database, and present the download link to them after registering? I guess this can all be accomplished using a contact form script with database integration and jquery confirmation message.

  • Should a standard include header be specified in each file or as a compiler parameter?

    - by Max
I've got a file such as this: #ifndef STDINCLUDE #define STDINCLUDE #include <memory> #include <stdexcept> #endif I want this file to be included in every header file, because I use stuff from those headers so much. Is it preferable to include this via compiler options (-I stdinclude.hpp), or should I physically include them in each header? (#include <stdinclude>). Note that I am attempting to be cross-platform-minded. I use cmake to serve atleast Unix and Windows.

• How can you build a C++ library to produce a .lib file for use in another project?

    - by Codereview
I tried to use Cmake for the first time, I tried adding a library to my project (Specifically, PhysFS) but then I understood that the library had no .lib file or .a file at all, so I have to build those somehow. I have no clue where to even start around going this, what should I do? Someone suggested I'd go to the project folder and type "Cmake ..." then "Make ..." but I was clueless as to how I'd do that. How would I build the library headers and source files in a .lib file that I can link in C::B? I'm using Windows XP SP3

  • What to do if I hate C++ header files?

    - by BlaXpirit
I was always confused about header files. They are so strange: you include .h file which doesn't include .cpp but .cpp are somehow compiled too. NOTE: I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE HEADERS, PLEASE DON'T TELL ME I'M STUPID OR SHOULD USE OTHER LANGUAGE Recently I joined a team project, and of course, both .h and .cpp are used. I understand that this is very important, but I can't live with copy-pasting every function declaration in each of multiple classes we have. How do I handle the 2-file convention efficiently? Are there any tools to help with that, or automatically change one file that looks like example below to .h and .cpp? (specifically for MS VC++ 2010) class A { ... Type f(Type a,Type b) { //implementation here, not in another file! } ... }; Type f(Type a) { //implementation here } ...
