• command line find/replace help

  I've got a set of 5000+ files that I need to do a simple search and replace in. I have been doing it in a text editor (EditPlus) by opening 500 files at a time, doing a global search/replace, saving all, closing, etc. But, that's taking literally hours to do and it's boring and tedious and I already have done it once today and need to do it again because all the files got refreshed. Is there a way to do this via the Bash command line? Here's the details: Find onchange="document.location ='/products/view.html/view/'+this.value" Replace it with onchange="alert('Not implemented')" style="display: none" All of the files have a .HTM extension, but they are nested in several sub directories.

• Are you supposed to type '6' with the left hand or the right hand?

  A few weeks ago, I did a Google Images search for keyboard finger charts to see which fingers I'm supposed to be using to type which keys. According to the charts, '6' is supposed to be typed with the right hand: (as shown on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typing) However, today I spotted a split keyboard in a store with the '6' on the left side of the split. Indeed, an image search for split keyboards indicates that this is the norm: (as shown on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Natural_keyboard) When doing touch typing "correctly", should I go with the finger charts (type 6 with my right hand), or should I go with the split keyboards (type 6 with my left hand)? <troll> Is this just another example of Microsoft not following the standards? </troll>

• How important is the uniqueness of your domain name?

  I've finally come up with a domain name that I like and is available. The name is nonsensical and doesn't translate into anything meaningful in any language, as far as I know. It's something like "FOOBARite". (Don't steal that!) I'm wondering about a few search issues. Results-wise, searching for it in Google currently returns about 15k results, none of which are relevant (dead Twitter pages, various unpopular online handles, and botched french translations). However, Google starts off with a spelling suggestion, which removes a letter. ("Did you mean: FOOBARit?") That returns about 250k results for several different and unrelated websites/organizations by that name. One is some technology provider, another is a sign-language organization, another is the name of a font... None of them seem particularly popular, there's not that much activity on any of those pages. Anyway, the two are pronounced differently, they're just a letter off. Should I go with my idea or is this one-letter variation going to cause me problems? If my site becomes ranked well enough, will Google's spelling suggestion go away? I don't want users to search for my site name and be told they've spelled it wrong.

• How do you apply to a company way out of your league?

  First, my background: I'm in the market for a new job I have ~2 years experience under my belt Nothing on my resume would JUMP out at you Thus far in my career I've been able to become productive quickly and have been continually praised by managers and coworkers for my abilities to learn and produce. I don't mean to be bragging here, but I want to get across that (at least in my mind) I could be categorized as "very promising young developer" I've been job hunting for a little while now and like most job seekers I've found a handful of companies that are basically "dream" jobs (think Fog Creek or 37Signals). If I were to apply to a company like that in the normal recruitment channels, my resume would probably not make it past the first set of filters. Now, I accept that I'm a longshot for a job at the hottest companies out there, but in my job search I've had a little success in applying for positions I'm not qualified for simply by doing something a little different: sending an email outlining how I don't meet the qualifications but stating why I would do well in the job anyways. In other cases, I've outright asked for a small project/problem that would be representative of the work to prove I can do the job, since I didn't have the specific skills on my resume yet. What I'm wondering is: If I'm not qualified on paper for a particular job, what creative/unique/impressive methods have you thought of or seen work to at least get an interview? For the sake of argument, assume I really am a "very promising young developer". I would love to hear from people who are responsible for hiring - I'd like to hear examples of techniques that got someone noticed when they otherwise wouldn't have. Clarification: I know that I need to continue building my resume to continue advancing. But I'm in the job search NOW, so I'm looking for other approaches

To be more exact replacement for (Thb +Enigmail this is the tandem Im using now) Best way would be if PGP would be built in into application. Commercial software is also fine :) excluding M$ software. What I need: - PGP support - application much more stable than Thunderbird, - support for Gmail out of the box including support for labels, - better search functionality (search in THB is far away from perfection), - cross platform (I should be able to run it on windows and Linux). • Homepage not showing on Google

  About six weeks ago my homepage (mayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) disappeared from the google organic search for "kayaking pembrokeshire" despite it having been number 2 within a few weeks of it's launch last summer. My previous site (www.mikemayberrykayakingdotcodotuk) had been 2nd for about six years and has 301 redirects for all pages to the new site. Google toolbar still rates the homepage as 3/10 and the domain is still showing in search results, just not the homepage. A little research suggests that this is most likely to be due to an issue with google treating two pages as identical content (one with www. and one with not) since the changes in their algorithms around that time and that the way to fix this is to add some code somewhere. This makes sense to me as my print advertising doesn't have the www part of the address. I have cpanel access but a limited knowledge on web coding, having picked things up as I've gone along and paid for designers etc., when needed. Would someone be able to let me know where I have to go to add the code and what code I need to add to redirect the crawlers to one page? Or is there another issue that is causing this? • I need a form to tie MySQL Records together.

  I need a HTML-based form to tie database records together. The user scenario that I envision is somthing like this: A super-user does a search of the database and is delivered a table of records based on that search; each record is numbered with the database-record id. There would also be two text fields next to each record. These text fields would allow: the user to make a reference from one record to another. For example, a user could enter into record id #457 the integer 242 to indicate that there is a correlation with record ID #242. The user would also describe the type of relationship it is. This could be accomplished with a simple integer in the second field that indicates the type of relationship between the two records. When the super-user hits the submit button, all of these relationships are saved in a mySqljoin table. One option is to give me advice on how to implement and code this myself in PHP. However, before I reinvent the wheel, another option is to lead me to a free script that does something similar.

• Building a List of All SharePoint Timer Jobs Programmatically in C#

  One of the most frustrating things about SharePoint is that the difficulty in figuring something out is inversely proportional to the simplicity of what you are trying to accomplish.  Case in point, yesterday I wanted to get a list of all the timer jobs in SharePoint.  Having never done this nor having any idea of exactly how to do this right off the top of my head, I inquired to Google.  I like to think my Google-fu is fair to good, so I normally find exactly what I’m looking for in the first hit.  But on the topic of listing all SharePoint timer jobs all it came up with a PowerShell script command (Get-SPTimerJob) and nothing more. Refined search after refined search continued to turn up nothing. • Troubleshooting PO Output in Oracle Purchasing

  Do your approved Purchase Orders occasionally not make it to the supplier, or the attached document is incorrect?  Or perhaps your users are reporting that the PO Output for Communication fails to fax, print or email.  Try the new Search Helper in Doc ID 1377764.1  First choose the radial button that pertains to your issue. Below we see a case where there is a problem with the  Purchase Order being sent to the supplier.  Then choose the symptom (or symptoms) that occur in the second section.  In this case we have chosen that the PDF attachment is malformed. • 301 redirect: Is this good or bad for 2 domains?

  Since i couldn't find any appropriate answer to my specific question, I wanted to ask you. I've read alot of things about the 301-redirect for moving pages and so on. A customer of mine has booked a new domain last year for better search results (he included his main keyword into the domain. Before he had only a domain with his business name, which had nothing to say about what he does). I told him, that he should do a 301-redirect so he doesn't loose his position in Google and to redirect all new customers coming from the old domain to the new domain. After about one year where his site hat a good amount of traffic the search results of Google for his keywords are getting more worse. Since he didn't maintain his website (no new content, bad content on all pages and so on) I assumed this would be the problem. He gave his website to another company which also makes websites. They told him, that this 301-redirection is very bad for his website. They removed it, and also updated his content and the template so now he has the same meta keywords on every page (instead of the specific ones I put there before). He also removed the canonical-tag which I placed there to ensure no duplicate content. What I am now afraid of is, that without this redirect Google now will find duplicate content and therefore kick him out of the index, which would be a nightmare, since most of his customers come over his website. I need verification of the fact, that the 301 isn't bad but in fact the correct way of working with 2 domains. If possible with good sources I can point out to him since he don't wants to hear anything about this. If someone also has a few words about the keywords and the canonical-tag I would really appreciate it! Thank you very much!

  Hi. I am integrating with a set of REST services exposed by our partner. The unit of integration is at the project level meaning that for each project created on our partners side of the fence they will expose a unique set of REST services. To be more clear, assume there are two projects - project1 and project2. The REST services available to access the project data would then be: /project1/search/getstuff?etc... /project1/analysis/getstuff?etc... /project1/cluster/getstuff?etc... /project2/search/getstuff?etc... /project2/analysis/getstuff?etc... /project2/cluster/getstuff?etc... My task is to wrap these services in a C# class to be used by our app developer. I want to make it simple for the app developer and am thinking of providing something like the following class. class ProjectClient { SearchClient _searchclient; AnalysisClient _analysisclient; ClusterClient _clusterclient; string Project {get; set;} ProjectClient(string _project) { Project = _project; } } SearchClient, AnalysisClient and ClusterClient are my classes to support the respective services shown above. The problem with this approach is that ProjectClient will need to provide public methods for each of the API's exposed by SearchClient, etc... public void SearchGetStuff() { _searchclient.getStuff(); } Any suggestions how I can architect this better?

• Grub2 attempting to boot hd1 when it should boot hd0

  I'm attempting to perform a "normal" install on a USB3 SSD (I don't know if it is noteworthy, but I don't have a swap partition). The installation proceeds normally (I'm installing from a USB2 device I created using LiLi Boot, with a copy of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit that I downloaded directly from the source. The system I'm running Ubuntu on has had a more traditional installation of ubuntu running on it without issue (also 12.10), so I know that everything works A-OK when booting from a 7200RPM internal disk. There are a number of oddities that I've noticed so far, including graphics corruption, but the first and most pressing issue is that Grub2 refuses to recognize the correct hd. The system refuses to boot unless I change the hd1,msdos1 - hd0,msdos1 in the grub menu at boot, when it is the only disk device connected to the PC. What options are left for me to troubleshoot this issue? I've been racking my brains and taxing the internet trying to dig up something on this problem, but now I'd like to see if the Ubuntu community can rise to the challenge and help me fix this boot problem. This is the second time I've attempted this particular setup. The first time, after days of wasted time, I managed to get it to boot every other boot - i.e. every even boot it would boot into Ubuntu like it was happy; every odd boot it would boot into the BusyBox or Grub prompt. At one point it complained that it couldn't find /dev/disk/by-uuid/[the disk], which I found most perplexing, since the disk was there and booted before and after the occurrence (with intervention).

• Launcher sometimes appears while full screen in VM (virtaulbox) - how to stop it?

  Launcher is great, and it helps me finds stuff. I have the latest release of 12. But when I'm full screen in VirtualBox running another operating system and I hit some key combination I haven't yet figured out, Laucher suddenly grabs keyboard focus. It might be alt-tab, it might be left-control x. I have physically pulled both the windows key and FN key off my laptop because they get in the way, so it's probably not the windows key. You don't know the focus has been stolen because the full screen app (VirtualBox) is still full screen and launcher is in the background. But you're busy typing into a laucher search box, not your foreground application. This is particularly annoying. In my screenshot (taken from a camera, because the built in screen capture program can't capture a screenshot containing the launcher...) the windows VM is the foreground application, but the launcher has come up and is capturing the keyboard: http://imgur.com/SrMRr I would like a foreground full screen app to stay that way. Is there a way that I can keep the launcher but only have it activate (e.g. pop out with its search box) if I physically click the button, not type some random key combination that foreground applications can get confused about? Otherwise I can do without the launcher, because doing my actual work is more involved than just launching programs.

• Why is one specific file not showing up in my document library?

  In my "Documents" library on Windows 7, one file is not showing up in Windows Explorer. When I look in C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents\blah\blah all 24 files appear. But when I look in Libraries > Documents > blah > blah only 23 show up. I made a copy of the file and the copy appears. Refresh doesn't help. The "Arrange by" setting defaults to "Name". When I change it to "Folder" the extra file appears, but changing it back to "Name" the file disappears again. How can I make the file appear in all views? Why would it disappear? EDIT: I deleted the Windows Search Index and things seem to be working again. I say it's a bug in the Search Service.

• Gave a talk at SoCal Code Camp at USC today titled “Linq to Objects A-Z”

  I gave a talk at SoCal Code Camp on Linq to Objects. With careful categorization of Linq functions, I was able to cover the entire set of Linq functions in only 35 minutes. I was able to spend the rest time on demos. In my first demo, I show I was able to write a top 20 URL type of query using 4 lines of library code and 9 line of Linq code without tools like Log Parser. I also demonstrated that I only need to change 2 lines of code from querying a single log file to a whole directory of log files. It would be as simple to run the query against multiple servers in parallel. In my second demo, I discussed how to turn into graph depth-first-search (DFS) and breath-first-search (BFS) in the a Linq queryable problem. The class LingToGraph contains the only DFS and BFS code I ever have to write; the rest could be done the the lambda passed to the DFS or BFS calls. • VMware - Broadcom 1000Gbps NIC does not link at 100Mbps to a Cisco switch port

  Today we've stumbled on a very awkward situation with our VMWare Server. The server is with ESX 3.5 that has a 1Gbps NIC. We bought a brand new managed Cisco Linksys switch with 10/100Mbps interface ports but when we plugged the cable in one of the ports the link simply does not wanted to activate :S... Does anyone with more VMware experience have ever had similar problem? From what I know is that 1Gbps NICs are backwards compatible with 100Mbps switches. I am starting to go nuts :@

• Directing Multiple ccTLD's to 1 gTLD with a country specific subdirectory?

  We have multiple ccTLDomains and are thinking about how to best combine these into one. We want to do this to focus our link building efforts. We are running a website through which we offer a software-as-a-service. Therefore we could potentially sell to any country in the world. However, Germany is our most important market. We currently have a .com, .de, .nl. and .pl domain. All these domains have a high amount of unique content pages. What we are planning is to change everything to .com with language-based subdirectories, so .com/en/, .com/de/, etc. I have two questions concerning this issue: 1) How much of an advantage does a ccTLD have over a gTLD with country specific subdirectories in search rankings? So let’s say .de versus .com/de/? 2) How could we best redirect the visitors of our old ccTLD’s to our gTLD’s subdirectories? We would like to loose as few search engine rankings as possible.   Hi, I've looked so much on the internet, but I could not find a any SIP Unregister example, and when I search RFC 3261,3665 the word does not even appear, perhaps I'm searching for the wrong phrase. I manage to understand the part of setting the expires to zero, but it still does not work and I could not find documentation about how a formal unregister should be.
