How to do this in a smart way

Hello SO. My websystem im coding with now is integrated from the originally phpBB system. With this i mean when you log on my websystem, you have actually logged into the forum from the login page. Now i came to the "log out" part, and i want to make it smart. Right now its a simply link with logout: <a href="<?php echo BASEDIR; ?>../../ucp.php?mode=logout&sid=<? echo $user->data['session_id']; ?>" style="margin-left: 14px; font-size: 10px;">- Log Out</a> As you see in the link it refers to the forum´s ucp.php?mode=logout, and you need to have the SID variable in it in order to log out right.. anyway.. I want to do this log out part in a smart way, i mean, not so you land on the forum´s "you have now been logged out", i want something maybe like run this page in background when you click, and then it refreshes the current page your on. Or should it be smarter just try to modify the phpbb file ucp.php? I think its hard coded, and not the way I am coding, so thats why i find it abit tricky. Thank you for your answers and examples on how this could be done, in a smart way..

sIFR 3 randomly placing text on a single line in FF3.6

Hello, sIFR 3 is behaving strangely in Firefox. The actual sIFR flash element is set within a box that is 412px wide. In IE, Chrome, Safari, etc., the with of the Flash element is a consistent 412px; however, in Firefox, the Flash element is briefly as wide as the Body element, before correcting itself. When the page finishes loading, sometimes the Flash element remains that wide, breaking the layout (the Flash text flows underneath the sidebar to the right). Setting a width in the CSS for the .sIFR-flash element causes it to remain the proper 412px wide, but the text doesn't wrap at all--it just cuts off at the right edge, and the height of the flash element remains one line high. The markup is simple; it's just an h2 within a div. My sIFR code: var clerkenwell = { src: '/flash/sifr.swf' }; sIFR.activate(clerkenwell); sIFR.replace(clerkenwell, { selector: '.post h2', css: '.sIFR-root { color: #1899c4; text-transform:uppercase; font-size:30px; }', transparent: 'true', }); Setting forceWidth: 'true', just causes the same problem as using a CSS width on the .sIFR-flash element. C++, using one byte to store two variables

Hi All I am working on representation of the chess board, and I am planning to store it in 32 bytes array, where each byte will be used to store two pieces. (That way only 4 bits are needed per piece) Doing it in that way, results in a overhead for accessing particular index of the board. Ive recently created a "map" although not very sophisticated (im working on it) it has the basic function and is generally heading in the right direction. trouble with custom 'Text Bubble' component (examples included)

I'm trying to use a custom Text component to show a series of comments. I got the original idea from: http://www.eonflex.com/?p=40 I've got the base case working but I am stuck with 2 problems I cant seem to figure out: Since I am drawing around the text, the actual height of each bubble is greater than that of the Text field, as a result, the last bubble is always chopped off. I have tried explicitly overriding the height getter, and adding some padding, but I cant seem to get it right. The first vbox shows a form where the user can enter a comment, and the second box has all the comments. In order to ensure that the scrollbars only show up on the second box, I set minHeight="0" on the nested VBox, but then for some reason, some comments' text is shifted to the right. JQueryMobile 1.1.1 List items not anchoring to the left

I'm trying to create a simple thumbnail list, the code is pretty much copied off jqm docs pages. However, when I use the code below the button element of the list isn't anchored to the left of the list item and instead appears centered...Can anyone help me? It's driving me crazy! Does this copy the reference or the object?

Sorry, I am being both thick and lazy, but mostly lazy. Actually, not even that. I am trying to save time so I can do more in less time as there's a lot to be done. But I am not even sure why I am asking this. I guess my only concern is, if, after instantiating Foo by calling its parameterized ctor with toPass, if I needed to make sure that the NVC I passed as toPass and the NVC private field _nvc had the exact same content, I would just need to compare their references, right?

CSS 100 percent height body and element

I am having an issue making one of my elements 100% within an overall layout that is 100%. I have tried different positioning solutions and I either end up with hidden content the floats behind the footer at the bottom, or the content ends up going behind the footer, and carrys on after the footer. Proper structure for dependency injection (using Guice)

I would like some suggestions and feedback on the best way to structure dependency injection for a system with the structure described below. I'm using Guice and thus would prefer solutions centered around it's annotation-based declarations, not XML-heavy Spring-style configuration. Consider a set of similar objects, Ball, Box, and Tube, each dependent on a Logger, supplied via the constructor. (This might not be important, but all four classes happen to be singletons --- of the application, not Gang-of-Four, variety.) A ToyChest class is responsible for creating and managing the three shape objects. ToyChest itself is not dependent on Logger, aside from creating the shape objects which are. The ToyChest class is instantiated as an application singleton in a Main class. I'm confused about the best way to construct the shapes in ToyChest. I either (1) need access to a Guice Injector instance already attached to a Module binding Logger to an implementation or (2) need to create a new Injector attached to the right Module. (1) is accomplished by adding an @Inject Injector injectorfield to ToyChest, but this feels weird because ToyChest doesn't actually have any direct dependencies --- only those of the children it instantiates. For (2), I'm not sure how to pass in the appropriate Module. Am I on the right track? Is there a better way to structure this? The answers to this question mention passing in a Provider instead of using the Injector directly, but I'm not sure how that is supposed to work. EDIT: Perhaps a more simple question is: when using Guice, where is the proper place to construct the shapes objects? ToyChest will do some configuration with them, but I suppose they could be constructed elsewhere. ToyChest (as the container managing them), and not Main, just seems to me like the appropriate place to construct them.

expand floating object when floating object within expands

Hey guys, quick question, I have a link when clicked drops down a list. This list is floated to the right to position it properly. This list is in another box that has been floated. My problem is that when the list expands, the box does not and the list comes out of the container box, unless the list is not floated. However floating it seems like the only way to get it to the position I want. I want a function to return a type of the subclass its invoked from

I want to have a function defined in a superclass that returns a value of the type of the subclass that is used to invoke the function. That is, say I have class A with a function plugh. Then I create subclasses B and C that extend A. I want B.plugh to return a B and C.plugh to return a C. Yes, they could return an A, but then the caller would have to either cast it to the right subtype, which is a pain when used a lot, or declare the receiving variable to be of the supertype, which loses type safety. So I was trying to do this with generics, writing something like this: class A<T extends A> { private T foo; public T getFoo() { return foo; } } class B extends A<B> { public void calcFoo() { foo=... whatever ... } } class C extends A<C> { public void calcFoo() { foo=... whatever ... } } This appears to work but it looks pretty ugly. For one thing, I get warnings on "class A". The compiler says that A is generic and I should specify the type. I guess it wants me to say "class A". But what would I put in for x? I think I could get stuck in an infinite loop here. It seems weird to write "class B extends A", but this causes no complaints, so maybe that's just fine. Is this the right way to do it? Is there a better way?

Are workflows good for web service business logic?

I have a series of complex web services that are getting used in my SOA application. I am generally happy with the overall design of the application, but as the complexity grows, I was wondering if Windows Workflow might be the way to go. My motivations for this are that you can get a graphic representation of the applications functionality, so it would be easier to maintain the code by its business function, rather than what I have now ( a standard 3 tier class library structure). My concerns are: I would be inducing an abstraction in my code, and I don't want to spend time having to deal with possible WF quirks or bugs. I've never worked with WF, is it a solid technology? I don't want to hit any WF limitations that prevent me from developing my solution. Is a WF even the right solution for the task? Simply put I am considering writing my next web service in this app to call a WF, and in this work flow manage the tasks the web service needs to carry out. I think it will be much neater and easier to maintain than a regular c# class library (maintainable by namespaces, classes ). Do you think this is the right thing to do? I'm hoping for positive feedback on WF (.net 4), but brutal honestly at the end of the day would help more. Thanks

Are there really safe and legal resources for sound effects to use in applications?

For those who want to opt for "close" immediately: Great user interfaces need great sound effects, right? User interfaces are programmed by programmers, right? So this is a programming question, ok? I had a very hard time to find good and legal sound resources. I am not looking for free sounds. Proper licensing is absolutely crucial, and I don't want to get sued by multibilliondollar music companies, hollywood sound studios and their highly overpaid lawyers. They cry about people downloading their stuff in file sharing sites but when someone comes and wants to really license stuff, the market is so empty like an open and unwatched gold mine. Trust me, whatever I type into google, I always end up getting sort of opaque and strange music libraries that do charge money, but refuse to provide proper licensing evidence to the licensee. When you pay money and they only count how many files you downloaded, that can never be a valid license, nor any evidence for you that you did license the sounds. Imagine that contributor suing you and you say: "I licensed it at xy", and his lawyer just smiles: "Show me proof, mofo!". So you loose a million dollars, or 1 for every downloaded app. Congrats. But that's the way all those "hey we're the worlds largest sound effect library" libraries are doing it. It's really annoying. And I hope someone here is able to point out a sound effects ressource which is A) big B) used by professinals C) has a reasonable pricing and licensing model D) provides the licensee with proper legal evidence about licensed sounds You know, I'm not from the US and typically you US folks are the ones who invent the cool stuff on the net, and maybe I just missed a new great start up. So?

How can I get a Node adjacent to a unique Node using Scala?

I'm trying to parse an Apple plist file and I need to get an array Node within it. Unfortunately its only unique identifier is sibling Node right before it, <key>ProvisionedDevices</key>. Right now my best thoughts are to use Java's XPATH querying or Node.indexOf. 1.8.x Ruby on Rails RESTful nested admin page and form_for problems

So I am creating a website that I want to have an admin directory in rails 1.8.x and I'm struggling a bit to get the form_for to link to the right controller. I am trying to be RESTful. What I basically want is an admin page that has a summary of actions which can then administer sub models such as: /admin (a summary of events) /admin/sales (edit sales on the site) /admin/sales/0 (the normal RESTful stuff) I can't use namespaces since they were introduced in Rails 2.0 (production site that I don't want to mess with updating rails and all that). Anyway, what I have in the routes.rb is: map.resource :admin do |admin| admin.resources :sales end I am using the map.resource as a singleton as recommended by another site. The problem comes in when I try to use the form_for to link to the subresource RESTfully. If i do : form_for(:sales, @sale) it never links to the right controller no matter what I try. I have also tried: form_for [@admin, @sale] do |f| and that doe not work either (I am guessing since admin is a singleton which does not have a model, it's just a placeholder for the admin controller). Am I supposed to add a prefix or something? Or something into the sales controller to specify that it is a subcontroller to admin? Is there an easier way to do this without manually creating a bunch of routes? Thanks for any help.

Codeigniter: how should I restructure db schema?

I don't even know if that's the right term. May it be known that I'm a major novice! I have three tables: users, profiles, and survey. Each one has user_id as it's first field, (auto-increment for users), and they're all tied by a foreign key constraint, CASCADE on DELETE. Currently, for each user, let's say user_id 1, they have a corresponding db entry in the other tables. For profiles it lists all their information, and the survey table holds all their survey information. Now I must change things...darn scope creep. Users need the ability to have multiple survey results. I imagine that this would be similar to a comment table for a blog... My entire app runs around the idea that a single user is linked to a constraining profile and survey. How should I structure my db? How should I design my app's db so that a user can have multiple tests/profiles for the test? Please assist! Any advice, information and personal-knowledge is appreciated! Right now the only way I know how to accompany my client is to create a pseudo-user for each test (so unnecessary) and list them in a view table (called "your tests")-- these are obtained from the db by saying: where user_id=manager_id

password is auto-completed despite setting redisplay=false in JSP (Struts)

Assigning Object to View, big MySQL resultset.

Hello (Sorry for my bad English) Is it bad practice to assign object to view and call its methods in there? I use smarty as my template engine. In my controller I could do like this 1# $this->view->assign("name", $this->model->getName); and in my view <p>{$name}</p> OR 2# $this->view->assign("Object", $this->model); and in my view <p>{$Report->getName()}</p> Well my biggest problem is that I have to handle a big amount of data coming out from the MySQL and I thought that if I would made a method that would print out the data while looping mysql_fetch_row. Well at least I know that using html-tags in the model is a bad thing to do. So I would assign the object to the view to get the result to the right position on the page.. Reading a mysql-result to an array first may cause memory problems am I right? So what is the solution doing things MVC style.. And yes Im using a framework of my own.

C# Sql Connection Best Practises 2013

With the new year approaching I'm drawing up a development plan for 2013. I won't bore you with the details but I started thinking about whether the way I do things is actually the 'correct' way. In particular how I'm interfacing with SQL. I create predominantly create WPF desktop applications and often some Silverlight Web Applications. All of my programs are very Data-Centric. When connecting to SQL from WPF I tend to use Stored Procedures stored on the server and fetch them using ADO.NET (e.g. SQLConnection(), .ExecuteQuery()). However with Silverlight I have a WCF service and use LINQ to SQL (and I'm using LINQ much more in WPF). My question is really is am I doing anything wrong in a sense that it's a little old fashioned? I've tried to look this up online but could find anything useful after about 2010 and of those half were 'LINQ is dead!' and the other 'Always use LINQ' Just want to make sure going forward I'm doing the right things the right way, or at least the advised way :). What principles are you using when connecting to SQL? Is it the same for WPF and Silverlight/WCF?
