• Windows Server 2008 R2 loses ability to connect to network share

  I could sure use some help with this one: I've got two Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Terminal Servers, as well as several 2003 servers (DNS / Wins / AD / DC). On the two 2008 boxes, every now and then they will get in this mode where you can't map a drive to a random server. I say random server because it's not always the same server that you can't map to. Here is a summary of what I can and can't do: net view \\servername Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not. net view \\FQDN This always works. net view \\IPAddress This always works. ping servername Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not. ping FQDN This always works. ping IPAddress This always works. I've been looking all over for a solution to this. It sure seems like Microsoft would have a hotfix by now. The kicker to this is that it sometimes works great, especially after a reboot. It may run for 2 weeks just fine, but all of a sudden it will fail to resolve the remote server name. It will then be this way for a few days, then it might start working again. Also, while it's in the mode of not working, the other servers have no problem getting there. It's just these 2008 R2 Terminal Servers. Setting a static entry in the Hosts file and LMHosts does not make it work. All servers have static IPs and they are registered in DNS and Wins just fine. Here is a long thread on MS Technet of the exact same problem, but they don't have a good solution. Here is their workaround (It was from June of 2010): Good news - a hotfix is in the works and a workaround has been identified: Root cause is that since this is SMB1 all user sessions are on a single TCP connection to the remote server. The first user to initiate a connection to the remote SMB server has their logon-ID added to the structure defining the connection. If that user logs off all subsequent uses of that TCP session fail as the logon-id is no longer valid. As a workaround for now to keep the issue from happening you will want to have the user not logoff the Terminal Server only disconnect their sessions. Any word from anyone out there about a solution? Any help would sure be appreciated. Thanks, James

• Problem with default File opening programs

  Working on Vista & Window 7, I use Winamp 5.57 for listening to mp3 and VLC player for watching movies. I made those two as my default players for corresponding media respectively. But when I launch winamp for playing mp3, some of the video files( like .flv, etc.,) automatically get changed the file opening mode to winamp player. This happens every time even if I set it back to 'default program'. Can someone please help me out.

• Why did Intel drop the Itanium?

  I was reading up on the history of the computer and I came along the IA-64 (Itanium) processors. They sounded really interesting and I was confused as to why Intel would decide to drop them. The ability to choose explicitly what 2 instructions you wanted to run in that cycle is a great idea, especially when writing your program in assembly, for example, a faster bootloader. The hundreds of registers should be convincing for any assembly programmer. You could essentially store all the functions variables in the registers if it doesn't call any other ones. The ability to do instructions like this: (qp) xor r1 = r2, r3 ; r1 = r2 XOR r3 (qp) xor r1 = (imm8), r3 ; r1 = (imm8) XOR r3 versus having to do: ; eax = r1 ; ebx = r2 ; ecx = r3 mov eax, ebx ; first put r2 into r1 xor eax, ecx ; then set r1 equivalent to r2 XOR r3 or ; SAME mov eax, (imm32) ; first put (imm32) into r1 xor eax, ecx ; then set r1 equivalent to (imm32) XOR r3 I heard it was because of no backwards x86 comparability, but couldn't thy be fixed by just adding the Pentium circuitry to it and just add a processor flag that would switch it to Itanium mode (like switching to Protected or Long mode) All the great things about it would have surly put them a giant leap ahead of AMD. Any ideas? Sadly this means you will need a very advanced compiler to do this. Or even one per specific model of the CPU. (E.g. a newer version of the Itanium with an extra feature would require different compiler). When I was working on a WinForms (target only had .NET 2.0) project in Visual Studio 2010, I had a compile target of IA-64. That means that there is a .NET runtime that was able to be compiled for IA-64 and a .NET runtime means Windows. Plus, Hamilton's answer mentions Windows NT. Having a full blown OS like Windows NT means that there is a compiler capable of generating IA-64 machine code.

• Clicked View Designer on a WinForm. Why was the file auto Checked out from Source Control?

I realize that there are probably options to silently check out the file without connfirmation, but why is VS thinking that it needs the file checked out in the first place?   I read somewhere that the Ultimate Boot CD can diagnose computer problems. In this case would this program help me get my Windows XP back? When I turn on the screen and hit "Start Windows Normally" or go to Safe Mode I get a flash of the WinXP logo and then it goes to this error page. • Ubuntu Server VM: copy paste?

  I've installed Ubuntu Server under Virtualbox just to get a nice little shell. I've also installed the VirtualBox "Guest Additions" and set "Shared Clipboard: Bidirectional". I still can't seem to get any copy-paste working. Am I missing something here? I've installed gpm which gives mouse support in server mode (no X), and allows copy-paste using the mouse, but still the VirtualBox integration doesn't work.

• Buffer requests in nginx while a symlink switches on backend

  In a release deployment I would like to buffer client requests that come to nginx(in reverse proxy) mode to be buffered for possibily 1-2 seconds while a pdsh request is sent to switch symlinks on the back end server to /var/www/html/current . After the switch is complete, I would want to release the buffering while avoiding a herd clash. Is this possible in nginx? Can someone help? Edit: The idea is not to loose requests and from nginx forums I've come to know that retries can sometimes results in CPU spins

• Activate Grub to show up at start up ?

  I used to have both windows vista and ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop and i could choose which one to start at start up. But now I only have ubuntu 10,04 on my laptop and because there is only one operating system on my laptop the grub window doesn't show up. I need it because sometimes I need to start my ubuntu in recovery mode with no graphics, I checked and grub is already installed, how can I activate it at start up ?   I have to run clamav on large files. I was wondering which command was the fastest between clamscan and clamdscan. But it seems that clamdscan is not working properly: it scans file larger than 1 GB. Could you guys help me find why the heck clamdscan isn't working ?   Using two servers with NLB, each box contains IIS and a mail server. Server1 is the primary Server2 runs the backup mail server The problem is the web app sends email to ourselves. When mail is sent from Server2 (via its own SMTP server) to ourselves, it tries to contact Server1, as its the mail server IP. But under Unicast mode of NLB, it cant reach the host via the public dedicated IP address. How can we get round this?

Right now, the only thing in my way is the fact that the tab bar can't be moved like the navigation bar or the bookmarks toolbar. • How do you close a VMWare Fusion VM Window without shutting it down or suspending it?

  There are a few parts to this question. The first is: I'm running a virtual machine guest using vmrun and nogui, when I open the VMWare Fusion application, the window library opens but subsequently also opens any window of a running VM. Is there a way to prevent this? Secondly, but related: Once it does pop up or I have that separate VM Window open, is there a way to close the window such that it does not suspend or shutdown the vm i.e. convert it back to nogui mode?
