• Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. • Installing Ubuntu along with windows 7 on shrunk partition

  I am new to Ubuntu OS and ask Ubuntu community. First this is not a duplicate question. Actually this a question which is a summery of all solutions and questions were posted in this community, related to Install Ubuntu along with Windows 7. I have bought a new Hp laptop with its original windows 7.I want to install Ubuntu along with windows 7 64 bit. I ran the Ubuntu 12.4 Desktop installation CD. But Ubuntu installer doesn't show the "along with windows 7 option"only it is showing two options. I read some questions and answers posted on this community. Specially following link Ubuntu 12.04 does not see windows already install on my computer (dual installation) I tried following thinks, I ran the terminal in live CD and tried sudo dmraid -rE command and dmraid remove command .But terminals says there is no dmraid partitions. So I tried another scenario checked my partitions with g parted.There are some partitions labeled C,HP tools,Recovery and System. C is containing windows 7 Files. So I shrank the volume of C Drive. Now I have 50000Mb of unallocated disk. I tried with Gparted to create a partition on that allocated space.It says some thing that you can't create more than four primary partition.Of course all other four partitions were created on widows are actually type of primary partition. So I went back to Windows 7 and tried to create a new volume on unallocated space.But unfortunately it says,If i create a new volume it will be the type of Dynamic partition.It says we cant boot another OS from that partition. So i cancelled that step. Now i have 50000Mb unallocated space but how can i install Ubuntu on that partition without harming the existing Windows 7? Because still I have only two options: Erase and install Ubuntu. Try something else. (I can see my unallocated space by going to "something else" option.)

• Windows 7 Green Load Bar Stuck and never finish loading,

  Here is my issues, which i am currently having, in my windows 7, When i go to one specific folder, .Please take a look, This is not my file, but just to get an idea, there is 10 file max no more than 500 MB, i am not able to remove it, or cut it, or move it, it starts that green bar loading and never finish, The problem is, after getting into this folder, my SONY VAIO starts, overheating and if i did not restart, nothing can stop it to be cool down . I have reinstalled windows 2 weeks ago, i don't think this should be issue regarding it. Please, help me what the hell i should do with this GREEN BAR< to stop this headache,

• Create NTFS symbolic links from within Linux

  Is there a Linux utility that can create NTFS symbolic links? That is, a link on an NTFS partition that points to another NTFS folder - one that will work within Windows 7, specifically. I wish to relocate a folder that is normally in-use while Windows is running. This machine can already dual-boot into Ubuntu, so I'd like to leverage that. EDIT: To keep this from potentially turning into "which Windows Live CD is best", I will limit this question to "Is it possible with Linux, yes or no?"

• When to use each user research method

  There are a lot of user research methods out there, but sometimes we get stuck in a rut, conducting all formative usability testing before coding, or running surveys to gather satisfaction data. I'll be the first to admit that it happens to me, but to get out of a rut, it just takes a minute to look at where I am in the design & development cycle, what kind(s) of data I need, and what methods are available to me. We need reminders, or refreshers, every once in a while. One tool I've found useful is a graphic organizer that I created many years ago. It's been through several revisions, as I've adapted it to the product cycles of the places I've worked, changed my mind about how to categorize it, and added methods that I've used or created over time. I shared a version of this table at the 2012 International UPA conference, and I was contacted by someone yesterday who wanted to use it in a university course on user-center design. I was flattered at the the thought, but embarrassed, because I was sure it needed updating -- that was a year ago, after all. But I opened it today, and really, there's not much I'd change -- sure, I could add some nuance regarding what types of formative testing, such as modality (remote, unmoderated remote, or in-person) or flavor of testing (RITE, RITE-Krug, comparative, performance), but I think it's pretty much ok as is. Click on the image below, to get the full-size PDF. And whether it's entirely "right" or "wrong" isn't the whole value of looking at these methods across the product lifecycle. The real value lies in the reminder that I have options. And what those options are change as the field changes, so while I don't expect this graphic to have an eternal shelf life, it's still ok a year after I last updated it. • Apache unable to write to files and folders on Fedora 16

  I've recently installed Fedora 16 on a new PC, and I'm intending to use it for developing my websites. I've set up Apache to host multiple development sites on the machine. Right now though, I am trying to install a PHP framework (Symfony2) and I'm unable to install it on to the web server. It comes back with an error saying that it's unable to write to the cache folder on the server. I have checked and modified the folder so that it is writeable, but still the error keeps being displayed? What am I doing wrong?

• Secure Apache Virtual Hosts?

  I am going to host a few small sites on VPS, and each of them are going to run my own custom PHP scripts. I am fairly certain that they are secure (did everything in the book, plus some of which is not in the book) to make sure they can't be exploited. But just to be safe I want to know how I could secure each of the virtual hosts so that they can't escape from there virtual host (if a hacker uploaded a shell they could not go above the www folder a legitimate user can't do in ftp no matter how many times they click ..) folder on Debian and Apache.

• Issues with Apache redirect to www-prefixed URL

  I have a website with domain mysite.com. I would like to have it so that if a user types in "mysite.com" it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Additionally, "mysite.com/subdir" will also redirect to "www.mysite.com/subdir". I've looked and made changes with vhosts and also rewrites, but it's not working for the "mysite.com/subdir"-"www.mysite.com/subdir" case. Every time I type in "mysite.com/subdir", it will redirect to "www.mysite.com". Only "www.mysite.com/subdir" works. Not sure how to troubleshoot this. I turned on rewrite logs and didn't see anything obvious, yet. This is my config files so far. Please let me know what I'm missing. Thanks! FYI: I'm using CentOS 5.4, nginx 1.2.0 on top of Apache 2.2.3. • Can't access individual samba shares

  I've just installed CentOS and I'm configuring Samba. I have a share with the following in the smb.conf file: [storage] comment = Main storage for all use path = /share public = yes browseable = yes writable = yes printable = no write list = bob root create mask = 0775 guest ok = yes available = yes In Windows Explorer, I can reach the page listing all the shares on the server, but I click on the shares themselves, I get an error saying that the folder cannot be found. I have verified that the folder /share exists and I've also given it 777 permissions so it cannot be due to permissions. What is causing this? I can post more config files if necessary.

• Changing LDAP schema casts Confluence AD integration unoperable

  I have had our instance of Atlassian Confluence configured to be integrated with our Active Directory. In AD, all the users were being created under default Users folder in Active Directory Users and Computers. We have decided to introduce cleaner separation and have created an Organizational Units structure in AD. Under root we have created Managed OU, and under it - Users OU and all user accounts were moved under Users OU. Now I though that to let the Confluence AD integration engine "know" where to look for user accounts now, I only need to adjust the BaseDN and prepand it with ou=Managed so it is aware that it is looking for cn=Users but under ou=Managed. That didn't work. How should I adjust LDAP schema root in a client application for it to be able to look for users in OU that then in a default folder.

  Hi all, I'm on a Mac OS X 10.5.8 I was recently uninstalling mysql5 from /opt/local/bin. I typed: rm -rf /opt/local/bin mysql* instead of rm -rf /opt/local/bin/mysql* This deleted my entire /opt/local/bin directory which puts me in a bit of a bind. Is there any way to recover these files? If not, I have a friend that is using a similar set of programs, would it be possible to use the contents of his folder? If I end up needing to re-install everything in this folder, what is the best way to go about doing this? Thanks in advance!

  Using the cp command, one can move files and folders on linux. I want to make a new user and move the contents of the skeleton map to their home directory. I use this command: cp -r /etc/skel/ /home/testuser/ However, this only creates a skel folder in testuser. The idea is that the contents of the /etc/skel folder be copied to /home/testuser, and not that a map be made in /home/testuser with those contents. I've checked the man page: Link, but nothing on there really seemed like the solution to me. Is there a way to do this, or do files really need to be moved manually, 1 by 1?

• DPM 2010 PowerShell Script to Easily Restore Multiple Files

  I’ve got what I thought would be a simple task with Data Protection Manager 2010 that is turning out to be quite frustrating. I have a file server on one server and it is the only server in a protection group. This file server is the repository for a document management application which stores the files according to the data within a SQL database. Sometimes users inadvertently delete files from within our application and we need to restore them. We have all the information needed to restore the files to include the file name, the folder that the file was stored in and the exact date that the file was deleted. It is easy for me to restore the file from within the DPM console since we have a recovery point created every day, I simply go to the day before the delete, browse to the proper folder and restore the file. The problem is that using the DPM console, the cumbersome wizard requires about 20 mouse clicks to restore a single file and it takes 2-4 minutes to get through all the windows. This becomes very irritating when a client needs 100’s of files restored… it takes all day of redundant mouse clicks to restore the files. Therefore, I want to use a PowerShell script (and I’m a novice at PowerShell) to automate this process. I want to be able to create a script that I pass in a file name, a folder, a recovery point date (and a protection group/server name if needed) and simply have the file restored back to its original location with some sort of success/failure notification. I thought it was a simple basic task of a backup solution, but I am having a heck of a time finding the right code. I have seen the sample code at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/how-to-use-a-windows-powershell-script-to-recover-an-item-in-data-protection-manager.aspx that I have tried to follow, but it doesn’t accomplish what I really want to do (it’s too simplistic) and there are errors in the sample code. Therefore, I would like to get some help writing a script to restore these files. An example of the known values to restore the data are: DPM Server: BACKUP01 Protection Group: Document Repository Data Protected Server: FILER01 File Path: R:\DocumentRepository\ToBackup\ClientName\Repository\2010\07\24\filename.pdf Date Deleted: 8/2/2010 (last recovery point = 8/1/2010) Bonus Points: If you can help me not only create this script, but also show me how to automate by providing a text file with the above information that the PowerShell script loops through, or even better, is able to query our SQL server for the needed data, then I would be more than willing to pay for this development.

• Troubleshooting a crash with Windows 7

  I have a folder with several thousand videos (All .MPG extensions). When I open the folder with these videos, it shows up fine, but as I start scrolling down, it crashes the Windows Explorer. I removed the Length column and it was still crashing. I then removed the Date column and the problem disappeared. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem or at least identifying the file that's causing the issue.

  I have 10 workstations with large monitors that have USB slots and several card readers built in. The card readers cannot be disabled and will map to drive letters when I image the computers. I go into Disk Management and delete the drive mappings and add mappings to a single folder in C:\ with a folder for each slot. I have to do this because of scripts that run that are expecting specific letter drive mappings to network resources. Is there a way to script the deleting and adding of drive mappings instead of having to use the Disk Management GUI manually on each workstation? The workstations are running XP Professional.

• Perl script rendered in browser as code through symlink - fine when accessed directly

  I have a Rails 4 app that has some views that post to Perl cgi scripts. The perl scripts are accessed via a symbolic link to a folder called "cgi-bin". When I navigate to a perl script through the symbolic link they are rendered as text instead of executed (ie: localhost:3000/cgi-bin/test.cgi), however when I access them directly they execute without issue (ie. localhost/path/to/cgi-bin/test.cgi). I am using apache2 on os x. In the directory localhost/path/to/ I have an .htaccess file that contains the following: # General Apache options AddHandler fastcgi-script .fcgi AddHandler cgi-script .cgi Options +FollowSymLinks +ExecCGI I have the exact same lines in the .htaccess file that I have in localhost:3000/ I have also uncommented the AllowOverride all in httpd.conf. The are no errors in apache's error log. When I access the direct link to test.cgi a new line is appended to apache's access log, when I access the script through the symbolic link (and it is rendered as text), there is no line appended to the access log. Any idea why this error occurs? This setup worked fine in a previous version of rails of OS X, but recently I upgraded to Mavericks and figured I should update the Rails application to v4.0 as well.

  I'm downloading PDF approach plates from Navigraph, and i have a folder per airport with files named after their corresponding approach / departure etc. Now I'd like to take such a folder with a bunch of PDF files, automatically generate an index and combine them to a single .mobi file that i can send to my Kindle. The index created can be very simple and consist of the file name (without the extension). Tapping an index item should jump to the correct page for that chart. I know there is a host of apps that combine comic book jpg's to ebooks, but is there anything that does the above please?

  I tried to install Visio on Windows 7, but I received the below error message. You cannot install the 64-bit version of Office 2010 because you have 32-bit Office products installed. These 32-bit products are not supported with 64-bit installations: Microsoft Office Single Image 2010 If you want to install 64-bit Office 2010, you must uninstall all 32-bit Office products first, and then run setup.exe in the x64 folder. If you want to install 32-bit Office 2010, close this Setup program, and then either go to the x86 folder at the root of your CD or DVD and run setup.exe, or get the 32-bit Office 2010 from the same place you purchased 64-bit Office 2010. I cannot find Microsoft Office Single Image 2010 in the programs list, so I tried to use Microsoft's Fix It to remove the software, but this doesn't resolve my issue.

• Impossible to enable bluetooth under Ubuntu

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 (dual boot, kept Windows just in case) on my new Acer Aspire One 756-877. As soon as I installed it I also installed the Broadcom driver, since wifi wasn't working, and that solved it right away. But when I tried Bluetooth, I had a problem that I see is quite recurring: -The hardware is on (and working fine under Windows) -The icon shows up on the menu, giving me the options of turning Bluetooth on or off, and then just "Bluetooth preferences". -I can apparently turn it on that way, which only lights up the icon but makes no difference at all (and doesn't give any other options in the Bluetooth menu) -When I open "Bluetooth preferences" (whether Bluetooth is apparently on or off, it makes no difference), it says it's disabled and will not let me slide the button to enable it. I've rebooted, but nothing happens. -The material is Broadcom and the port (if it's relevant at all) is Port_#0001.Hub_#0003 I tried the following commands suggested in other similar questions, with no result at all: sudo dmesg | grep blue and sudo service bluetooth start and sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth start Any other clues on what I can do? • Cannot install new certificate in IIS 7 on Windows Server 2008 R2

  We are trying to renew our existing web site certificate on our IIS 7 site under Windows Server 2008 R2, but we continue to get the "Access is denied" error that others have posted. However, when we have gone to implement the common fix of making sure the Administrator group has full access to all folders and subfolders on the C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA folder, we get an "Access is Denied" error on changing those permissions. Yes, we are logged in as Administrator user - it just seems to not allow us to modify the group permissions to this folder. Help! We need to renew our certificate before March 2011!
