    This is the situation: Working on (the next version of) a Unity quicklist editor, I would like to add a reliable way of "restarting" launcher icons. To do so, I need to remove the icon (editing gsettings) and replace it on the same position. So far no problem. However, if the application in question is running, user will possibly lose data, as the application will quit when it's icon is removed from the launcher. What I need is a reliable way to find an application's process name, to let the editor check in the list of running processes if the application is running, and send a warning message to the user that the icon can not be restarted if the application is running. What i did so far is make the editor look into the desktop file, to read the command, also read the command, stripped from the directory section, and furthermore look into possible remote scripts the desktop file command might refer to, looking for strings starting with "./" Although te method seems to work well with all applications I tested it on, I have the feeling there must be an easier way to cover the problem in an "all in one" way... Is there? also suggestions to catch more exceptional situations are welcome!

I don't know how to do something similar in delphi. My need is not for exactly a message handler, but a lightweight "trick" to make the console application work like a GUI application using threads. So that, for example, two Indy TCP servers could be handled without the console application terminating the process. My question: How could this be accomplished?

  • Questions on method to use: Facebook Business Page with Flash or Facebook Application?

    Hi there, I'm new to Facebook's Graph API / FBML / etc. So if at any point in my post I make a mistake or wrong assumption, please point them out. One of the projects that I am working on has a need to get data/info from an existing web site in addition to the friends list and such that FB can provide. This is for a platform that allows people from all over the world to help out in small scale projects that will benefit various communities. These projects are usually to help out people in unfortunate / less than ideal situations / living conditions so that their environment improves. The initial idea was to develop a Business Page (this is the same as a Fan Page right?) for each Project with a Static FBML tag to do the displaying. However, iframes are not allowed in Pages (as far as I know, iframes are only allowed in an FB Application). So it is no longer possible to get data from the web site to be displayed in the FB Page. So one of the options is to embed a Flash in the Page's Tab. I am fairly certain that the Flash can retrieve data on the User's friends and connections in an Application's context (because of all of those darn FB games that I'm addicted to :p). However, I would like to confirm if it can do the same if it's embedded in a Business Page's Tab. Could someone please confirm on this issue? The other option that we arrived at was (if the earlier options fails) to have an Application built instead. However, this means that we would need to create an Application for each Project. Not an ideal situation. Is there any other option that we have missed that can help us achieve the desired result with as little hassle as possible?   • Best practice to create WPF wrapper application displaying screens on demand.

    Context: I'm developing a WPF application which will contain a lot of different "screens". Each screen contains a which on its turn contains all the visual elements. Some elements trigger events (e.g., checkboxes), a screen has individual resources, etc. The main application is "wrapper" around these screens: it contains a menubar, toolbar, statusbar and alike (in a DockPanel) and space to display one screen. Through the menubar, the user can choose which screen he wants to display. Goal: I want to dynamically load & display & (event)handle one screen in the space in the main application. I don't want to copy & paste all the "wrapper" stuff in all the different screens. And As I have many complex screens (around 300 - luckily auto-generated), I don't want to load all of them at the start of the application, but only upon request. Question: What do you recommend as the best way to realize this? What kind of things should I use and investigate: Pages or windows or User Control for the screens? Does this affect the event handling?

  • Business Tier | client state in desktop application- way around Stateful Session Beans?

    I read positive inputs on the following posts concerning client state management: Stateful EJBs in web application?, here, and here. I want to know how implement such client state management for desktop applications (Swing, AWT, SWT, and other). let's assume there are n desktop clients supposed to use some (remote) services provided on an Application Server. How to maintain a separate and permanent data state for each client , distinct from the other without have to use using stateful session Beans (SFSB) ? is that even possible on this application type ? With Webapp(Servlets / JsSF and JSP) some can avoid using SFSB by HttpSession object and/or coupling it with stateless session beans (SLSB). HttpSession object would keep information for each (Web)client separate and the SLSB would play the business logic music. But HttpSession objects aren't present on desktop application and I go stuck with only SFSB and SLSB. Knowing the problems(Concurrency, Error Handling, usw ) of SFSB, I would have not wanted to use it. What would be the other options? is there only SFSB available? Thanks in advances
