  • How can I connect to a mail server using SMTP over SSL using Python?

    - by jakecar
    Hello, So I have been having a hard time sending email from my school's email address. It is SSL and I could only find this code online by Matt Butcher that works with SSL: import smtplib, socket version = "1.00" all = ['SMTPSSLException', 'SMTP_SSL'] SSMTP_PORT = 465 class SMTPSSLException(smtplib.SMTPException): """Base class for exceptions resulting from SSL negotiation.""" class SMTP_SSL (smtplib.SMTP): """This class provides SSL access to an SMTP server. SMTP over SSL typical listens on port 465. Unlike StartTLS, SMTP over SSL makes an SSL connection before doing a helo/ehlo. All transactions, then, are done over an encrypted channel. This class is a simple subclass of the smtplib.SMTP class that comes with Python. It overrides the connect() method to use an SSL socket, and it overrides the starttles() function to throw an error (you can't do starttls within an SSL session). """ certfile = None keyfile = None def __init__(self, host='', port=0, local_hostname=None, keyfile=None, certfile=None): """Initialize a new SSL SMTP object. If specified, `host' is the name of the remote host to which this object will connect. If specified, `port' specifies the port (on `host') to which this object will connect. `local_hostname' is the name of the localhost. By default, the value of socket.getfqdn() is used. An SMTPConnectError is raised if the SMTP host does not respond correctly. An SMTPSSLError is raised if SSL negotiation fails. Warning: This object uses socket.ssl(), which does not do client-side verification of the server's cert. """ self.certfile = certfile self.keyfile = keyfile smtplib.SMTP.__init__(self, host, port, local_hostname) def connect(self, host='localhost', port=0): """Connect to an SMTP server using SSL. `host' is localhost by default. Port will be set to 465 (the default SSL SMTP port) if no port is specified. If the host name ends with a colon (`:') followed by a number, that suffix will be stripped off and the number interpreted as the port number to use. This will override the `port' parameter. Note: This method is automatically invoked by __init__, if a host is specified during instantiation. """ # MB: Most of this (Except for the socket connection code) is from # the SMTP.connect() method. • How to map an IDictionary<String, CustomCollectionType> in NHibernate

    - by devonlazarus
    Very close to what I'm trying to do but not quite the answer I think I'm looking for: How to map IDictionary<string, Entity> in Fluent NHibernate I'm trying to implement an IDictionary<String, IList<MyEntity>>and map this collection to the database using NHibernate. I do understand that you cannot map collections of collections directly in NHibernate, but I do need the functionality of accessing an ordered list of elements by key. I've implemented IUserCollectionType for my IList<MyEntity> so that I can use IDictionary<String, MyCustomCollectionType> but am struggling with how to get the map to work as I'd like. Details This is the database I'm trying to model: ------------------------ -------------------- | EntityAttributes | | Entities | ------------------------ ------------------ -------------------- | EntityAttributeId PK | | Attributes | | EntityId PK | <- | EntityId FK | ------------------ | DateCreated | | AttributeId FK | -> | AttributeId PK | -------------------- | AttributeValue | | AttributeName | ------------------------ ------------------ Here are my domain classes: public class Entity { public virtual Int32 Id { get; private set; } public virtual DateTime DateCreated { get; private set; } ... } public class EavEntity : Entity { public virtual IDictionary<String, EavEntityAttributeList> Attributes { get; protected set; } ... } public class EavAttribute : Entity { public virtual String Name { get; set; } ... } public class EavEntityAttribute : Entity { public virtual EavEntity EavEntity { get; private set; } public virtual EavAttribute EavAttribute { get; private set; } public virtual Object AttributeValue { get; set; } ... } public class EavEntityAttributeList : List<EavEntityAttribute> { } I've also implemented the NH-specific custom collection classes IUserCollectionType and PersistentList And here is my mapping so far: <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" ...> <class xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" name="EavEntity" table="Entities"> <id name="Id" type="System.Int32"> <column name="EntityId" /> <generator class="identity" /> </id> ... <map cascade="all-delete-orphan" collection-type="EavEntityAttributeListType" name="EntityAttributes"> <key> <column name="EntityId" /> </key> <index type="System.String"> <column name="Name" /> </index> <one-to-many class="EavEntityAttributeList" /> </map> </class> </hibernate-mapping> I know the <map> tag is partially correct, but I'm not sure how to get NH to utilize my IUserCollectionType to persist the model to the database. What I'd like to see (and this isn't right, I know) is something like: <map cascade="all-delete-orphan" collection-type="EavEntityAttributeListType" name="EntityAttributes"> <key> <column name="EntityId" /> </key> <index type="System.String"> <column name="Name" /> </index> <list> <index column="DisplayOrder"> <one-to-many class="EntityAttributes"> </list> </map> Does anyone have any suggestions on how to properly map that IDictionary<String, EavEntityAttributeList> collection? I am using Fluent NH so I'll take examples using that library, but I'm hand mappings are just as helpful here.

  • Java textfile I/O problem

    - by KáGé
    Hello, I have to make a torpedo game for school with a toplist for it. I want to store it in a folder structure near the JAR: /Torpedo/local/toplist/top_i.dat, where the i is the place of that score. The files will be created at the first start of the program with this call: File f; f = new File(Toplist.toplistPath+"/top_1.dat"); if(!f.exists()){ Toplist.makeToplist(); } Here is the toplist class: package main; import java.awt.Color; import java.io.BufferedReader; import java.io.File; import java.io.FileNotFoundException; import java.io.FileReader; import java.io.FileWriter; import java.io.IOException; import java.io.PrintWriter; import java.text.SimpleDateFormat; import java.util.Calendar; import java.util.prefs.Preferences; import javax.swing.JFrame; import javax.swing.JOptionPane; import javax.swing.JTextArea; public class Toplist { static String toplistPath = "./Torpedo/local/toplist"; //I know it won't work this easily, it's only to get you the idea public static JFrame toplistWindow = new JFrame("Torpedó - [TOPLISTA]"); public static JTextArea toplist = new JTextArea(""); static StringBuffer toplistData = new StringBuffer(3000); public Toplist() { toplistWindow.setSize(500, 400); toplistWindow.setLocationRelativeTo(null); toplistWindow.setResizable(false); getToplist(); toplist.setSize(400, 400); toplist.setLocation(0, 100); toplist.setColumns(5); toplist.setText(toplistData.toString()); toplist.setEditable(false); toplist.setBackground(Color.WHITE); toplistWindow.setLayout(null); toplistWindow.setVisible(true); } public Toplist(Player winner) { //this is to be done yet, this will set the toplist at first and then display it toplistWindow.setLayout(null); toplistWindow.setVisible(true); } /** * Creates a new toplist */ public static void makeToplist(){ new File(toplistPath).mkdir(); for(int i = 1; i <= 10; i++){ File f = new File(toplistPath+"/top_"+i+".dat"); try { f.createNewFile(); } catch (IOException e) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(new JFrame(), "Fájl hiba: toplista létrehozása", "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } } } /** * If the score is a top score it inserts it into the list * * @param score - the score to be checked */ public static void setToplist(int score, Player winner){ BufferedReader input = null; PrintWriter output = null; int topscore; for(int i = 1; i <= 10; i++){ try { input = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(toplistPath+"/top_"+i+",dat")); String s; topscore = Integer.parseInt(input.readLine()); if(score > topscore){ for(int j = 9; j >= i; j--){ input = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(toplistPath+"/top_"+j+".dat")); output = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(toplistPath+"/top_"+(j+1)+".dat")); while ((s = input.readLine()) != null) { output.println(s); } } output = new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(toplistPath+"/top_"+i+".dat")); output.println(score); output.println(winner.name); if(winner.isLocal){ output.println(Torpedo.session.remote.name); }else{ output.println(Torpedo.session.remote.name); } output.println(Torpedo.session.mapName); output.println(DateUtils.now()); break; } } catch (FileNotFoundException e) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(new JFrame(), "Fájl hiba: toplista frissítése", "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } catch (IOException e) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(new JFrame(), "Fájl hiba: toplista frissítése", "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } finally { if (input != null) { try { input.close(); } catch (IOException e) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(new JFrame(), "Fájl hiba: toplista frissítése", "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } } if (output != null) { output.close(); } } } } /** * This loads the toplist into the buffer */ public static void getToplist(){ BufferedReader input = null; toplistData = null; String s; for(int i = 1; i <= 10; i++){ try { input = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(toplistPath+"/top_"+i+".dat")); while((s = input.readLine()) != null){ toplistData.append(s); toplistData.append('\t'); } toplistData.append('\n'); } catch (FileNotFoundException e) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(new JFrame(), "Fájl hiba: toplista betöltése", "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } catch (IOException e) { JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(new JFrame(), "Fájl hiba: toplista betöltése", "Error", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE); } } } /** * * @author http://www.rgagnon.com/javadetails/java-0106.html * */ public static class DateUtils { public static final String DATE_FORMAT_NOW = "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss"; public static String now() { Calendar cal = Calendar.getInstance(); SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat(DATE_FORMAT_NOW); return sdf.format(cal.getTime()); } } } The problem is, that it can't access any of the files. I've tried adding them to the classpath and at least six different variations of file/path handling I found online but nothing worked. Could anyone tell me what do I do wrong? Thank you.

  • NHibernate Mapping and Querying Where Tables are Related But No Foreign Key Constraint

    - by IanT8
    I'm fairly new to NHibernate, and I need to ask a couple of questions relating to a very frequent scenario. The following simplified example illustrates the problem. I have two tables named Equipment and Users. Users is a set of system administrators. Equipment is a set of machinery. Tables: Users table has UserId int and LoginName nvarchar(64). Equipment table has EquipId int, EquipType nvarchar(64), UpdatedBy int. Behavior: System administrators can make changes to Equipment, and when they do, the UpdatedBy field of Equipment is "normally" set to their User Id. Users can be deleted at any time. New Equipment items have an UpdatedBy value of null. There's no foreign key constraint on Equipment.UpdatedBy which means: Equipment.UpdatedBy can be null. Equipment.UpdatedBy value can be = existing User.UserId value Equipment.UpdatedBy value can be = non-existent User.UserId value To find Equipment and who last updated the Equipment, I might query like this: select E.EquipId, E.EquipName, U.UserId, U.LoginName from Equipment E left outer join Users U on. E.UpdatedBy = U.UserId Simple enough. So how to do that in NHibernate? My mappings might be as follows: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" namespace="Data" assembly="Data"> <class name="User" table="Users"> <id name="Id" column="UserId" unsaved-value="0"> <generator class="native" /> </id> <property name="LoginName" unique="true" not-null="true" /> </class> <class name="Equipment" table="Equipment"> <id name="Id" column="EquipId" type="int" unsaved-value="0"> <generator class="native" /> </id> <property name="EquipType" /> <many-to-one name="UpdatedBy" class="User" column="UpdatedBy" /> </class> </hibernate-mapping> So how do I get all items of equipment and who updated them? using (ISession session = sessionManager.OpenSession()) { List<Data.Equipment> equipList = session .CreateCriteria<Data.Equipment>() // Do I need to SetFetchmode or specify that I // want to join onto User here? If so how? .List<Data.Equipment>(); foreach (Data.Equipment item in equipList) { Debug.WriteLine("\nEquip Id: " + item.Id); Debug.WriteLine("Equip Type: " + item.EquipType); if (item.UpdatedBy.Country != null) Debug.WriteLine("Updated By: " + item.UpdatedBy.LoginName); else Debug.WriteLine("Updated by: Nobody"); } } When Equipment.UpdatedBy = 3 and there is no Users.UserId = 3, the above fail I also have a feeling that the generated SQL is a select all from Equipment followed by many select columns from Users where UserId = n whereas I'd expected NHibernate to left join as per my plain ordinary SQL and do one hit. If I can tell NHibernate to do the query in one hit, how do I do that? Time is of the essence on my project, so any help you could provide is gratefully received. If you're speculating about how NHibernate might work in this scenario, please say you're not absolutely sure. Many thanks.

  • Prevent lazy loading in nHibernate

    - by Ciaran
    Hi, I'm storing some blobs in my database, so I have a Document table and a DocumentContent table. Document contains a filename, description etc and has a DocumentContent property. I have a Silverlight client, so I don't want to load up and send the DocumentContent to the client unless I explicity ask for it, but I'm having trouble doing this. I've read the blog post by Davy Brion. I have tried placing lazy=false in my config and removing the virtual access modifier but have had no luck with it as yet. Every time I do a Session.Get(id), the DocumentContent is retrieved via an outer join. I only want this property to be populated when I explicity join onto this table and ask for it. Any help is appreciated. My NHibernate mapping is as follows: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <hibernate-mapping xmlns="urn:nhibernate-mapping-2.2" assembly="Jrm.Model" namespace="Jrm.Model"> <class name="JrmDocument" lazy="false"> <id name="JrmDocumentID"> <generator class="native" /> </id> <property name="FileName"/> <property name="Description"/> <many-to-one name="DocumentContent" class="JrmDocumentContent" unique="true" column="JrmDocumentContentID" lazy="false"/> </class> <class name="JrmDocumentContent" lazy="false"> <id name="JrmDocumentContentID"> <generator class="native" /> </id> <property name="Content" type="BinaryBlob" lazy="false"> <column name="FileBytes" sql-type="varbinary(max)"/> </property> </class> </hibernate-mapping> and my classes are: [DataContract] public class JrmDocument : ModelBase { private int jrmDocumentID; private JrmDocumentContent documentContent; private long maxFileSize; private string fileName; private string description; public JrmDocument() { } public JrmDocument(string fileName, long maxFileSize) { DocumentContent = new JrmDocumentContent(File.ReadAllBytes(fileName)); FileName = new FileInfo(fileName).Name; } [DataMember] public virtual int JrmDocumentID { get { return jrmDocumentID; } set { jrmDocumentID = value; OnPropertyChanged("JrmDocumentID"); } } [DataMember] public JrmDocumentContent DocumentContent { get { return documentContent; } set { documentContent = value; OnPropertyChanged("DocumentContent"); } } [DataMember] public virtual long MaxFileSize { get { return maxFileSize; } set { maxFileSize = value; OnPropertyChanged("MaxFileSize"); } } [DataMember] public virtual string FileName { get { return fileName; } set { fileName = value; OnPropertyChanged("FileName"); } } [DataMember] public virtual string Description { get { return description; } set { description = value; OnPropertyChanged("Description"); } } } [DataContract] public class JrmDocumentContent : ModelBase { private int jrmDocumentContentID; private byte[] content; public JrmDocumentContent() { } public JrmDocumentContent(byte[] bytes) { Content = bytes; } [DataMember] public int JrmDocumentContentID { get { return jrmDocumentContentID; } set { jrmDocumentContentID = value; OnPropertyChanged("JrmDocumentContentID"); } } [DataMember] public byte[] Content { get { return content; } set { content = value; OnPropertyChanged("Content"); } } }

  • Why ????? is displayed instead of non-english characters?

    - by smhnaji
    I first created a simple HTML page that uses UTF-8 as its character encoding. Then I moved the HTML content as a view in codeigniter and it was still ok (I had used non-english characters that were ok as always) I added a simple dynamic functionality (there is a contact us form in it that emails users feedback to site admin). Please note that the characters were ok at localhost (which is a LAMP server running on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) Strange is that when I uploaded the app to server, all persian characters are shown as ???? (For example ??? (which means Name) is shown ??? and so so...) I have not even connected to mysql or any other DBMS. It's the only page in the website (it's more an under construction page) and nothing else has been used in it. Maybe I should state that I have also used session library to thank the user after his feedback was sent to admins, nothing else. I have really no idea about the problem. UPDATE Now I can see that the problem is only with cPanel. On Directadmin I can see that everything is normal. Both Chromium and Firefox DO use UTF-8 as page's character encoding. URL is http://WEBSITE.COM/dmf/dynamic/ (dmf is the abbreviation of the project name!). There is nothing non-english in the URL. The page's code is as follows: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" /> <title>??? ???????</title> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="<?php echo base_url('template/css/style.css'); ?>" /> <!-- 1. jquery library --> <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js"> </script> <!-- 2. flowplayer --> <script src="http://releases.flowplayer.org/5.1.1/flowplayer.min.js"></script> <!-- 3. skin --> <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://releases.flowplayer.org/5.1.1/skin/minimalist.css" /> </head> <body> <div id="wrapper"> <header> <h1>??? ???????</h1> </header> <section id="box-container"> <?php echo form_open('contact', "id='contact-us'"); echo form_fieldset('???? ?? ??'); if ($this->session->userdata('mailsent')) { echo '<div>??????? ???? ??? ????? ??</div>'; $this->session->sess_destroy(); } echo '<input tabindex="1" id="name-in" value="???" type="text" name="name"/> <input tabindex="2" id="mail-in" value="?????" type="email" name="email"/> <textarea tabindex="3" id="content-in" name="message">???????</textarea> <input tabindex="4" id="submit" type="submit" value="?????" />'; echo '<div class="clear"></div>'; echo form_fieldset_close(); echo form_close(); ?> <div id="sms-comp"> <h2>?????? ??????</h2> <p> <span id="comp-title">?? ??? ????</span> ???? ??????? ???? ??? </p> </div> <div id="last-program"> <h2>?????? ????? ??????</h2> <div class="flowplayer"> <video id="my_video_1" width="212" height="126" poster="<?php echo base_url('template/images/img.jpg'); ?>" controls="controls" src="http://archive.org/download/Pbtestfilemp4videotestmp4/video_test.ogv" type='video/mp4'> </video> </div> </div> <div class="clear"></div> </section> </div> <footer> ????? ? ????? : <a href="http://powered-by.com/" target="_blank">????? ???</a> </footer> </body> </html>

  • Saving a Join Model

    - by Thorpe Obazee
    I've been reading the cookbook for a while now and still don't get how I'm supposed to do this: My original problem was this: A related Model isn't being validated From RabidFire's commment: If you want to count the number of Category models that a new Post is associated with (on save), then you need to do this in the beforeSave function as I've mentioned. As you've currently set up your models, you don't need to use the multiple rule anywhere. If you really, really want to validate against a list of Category IDs for some reason, then create a join model, and validate category_id with the multiple rule there. Now, I have these models and are now validating. The problem now is that data isn't being saved in the Join Table: class Post extends AppModel { var $name = 'Post'; var $hasMany = array( 'CategoryPost' => array( 'className' => 'CategoryPost' ) ); var $belongsTo = array( 'Page' => array( 'className' => 'Page' ) ); class Category extends AppModel { var $name = 'Category'; var $hasMany = array( 'CategoryPost' => array( 'className' => 'CategoryPost' ) ); class CategoryPost extends AppModel { var $name = 'CategoryPost'; var $validate = array( 'category_id' => array( 'rule' => array('multiple', array('in' => array(1, 2, 3, 4))), 'required' => FALSE, 'message' => 'Please select one, two or three options' ) ); var $belongsTo = array( 'Post' => array( 'className' => 'Post' ), 'Category' => array( 'className' => 'Category' ) ); This is the new Form: <div id="content-wrap"> <div id="main"> <h2>Add Post</h2> <?php echo $this->Session->flash();?> <div> <?php echo $this->Form->create('Post'); echo $this->Form->input('Post.title'); echo $this->Form->input('CategoryPost.category_id', array('multiple' => 'checkbox')); echo $this->Form->input('Post.body', array('rows' => '3')); echo $this->Form->input('Page.meta_keywords'); echo $this->Form->input('Page.meta_description'); echo $this->Form->end('Save Post'); ?> </div> <!-- main ends --> </div> The data I am producing from the form is as follows: Array ( [Post] => Array ( [title] => 1234 [body] => 1234 ) [CategoryPost] => Array ( [category_id] => Array ( [0] => 1 [1] => 2 ) ) [Page] => Array ( [meta_keywords] => 1234 [meta_description] => 1234 [title] => 1234 [layout] => index ) ) UPDATE: controller action //Controller action function admin_add() { // pr(Debugger::trace()); $this->set('categories', $this->Post->CategoryPost->Category->find('list')); if ( ! empty($this->data)) { $this->data['Page']['title'] = $this->data['Post']['title']; $this->data['Page']['layout'] = 'index'; debug($this->data); if ($this->Post->saveAll($this->data)) { $this->Session->setFlash('Your post has been saved', 'flash_good'); $this->redirect($this->here); } } } UPDATE #2: Should I just do this manually? The problem is that the join tables doesn't have things saved in it. Is there something I'm missing? UPDATE #3 RabidFire gave me a solution. I already did this before and am quite surprised as so why it didn't work. Thus, me asking here. The reason I think there is something wrong. I don't know where: Post beforeSave: function beforeSave() { if (empty($this->id)) { $this->data[$this->name]['uri'] = $this->getUniqueUrl($this->data[$this->name]['title']); } if (isset($this->data['CategoryPost']['category_id']) && is_array($this->data['CategoryPost']['category_id'])) { echo 'test'; $categoryPosts = array(); foreach ($this->data['CategoryPost']['category_id'] as $categoryId) { $categoryPost = array( 'category_id' => $categoryId ); array_push($categoryPosts, $categoryPost); } $this->data['CategoryPost'] = $categoryPosts; } debug($this->data); // Gives RabidFire's correct array for saving. return true; } My Post action: function admin_add() { // pr(Debugger::trace()); $this->set('categories', $this->Post->CategoryPost->Category->find('list')); if ( ! empty($this->data)) { $this->data['Page']['title'] = $this->data['Post']['title']; $this->data['Page']['layout'] = 'index'; debug($this->data); // First debug is giving the correct array as above. if ($this->Post->saveAll($this->data)) { debug($this->data); // STILL gives the above array. which shouldn't be because of the beforeSave in the Post Model // $this->Session->setFlash('Your post has been saved', 'flash_good'); // $this->redirect($this->here); } } }

  • Swap image with jquery and show zoom image

    - by Neil Bradley
    Hi there, On my site I have 4 thumbnail product images that when clicked on swap the main image. This part is working okay. However, on the main image I'm also trying to use the jQZoom script. The zoom script works for the most part, except that the zoomed image always displays the zoom of the first image, rather than the one selected. This can be seen in action here; http://www.wearecapital.com/productdetails-new.asp?id=6626 I was wondering if someone might be able to suggest a solution? • Want to learn/dive into Java Web Development—where to start?

    - by ernesto che
    Hi folks, I want to dive into Java Web Development, but I don’t know where to start because I am overwhelmed with Frameworks, JSRs, modules and the like. Coming from a PHP and Ruby (on Rails) background, it may seem awkward to go the other way ’round—still there are a lot of places where Java is (and probably will be) prevalent. I know basic Java concepts, syntax and OOP, and I have done (too much) nonsense in existing projects in JSP. I am already using SVN and GIT, but like coding PHP and Ruby mostly via VIM, i’ve also done versioning from the command line. But this time I want to learn to build a new project from the ground up, in a more, let’s say, academic way (instead of the hackery to date). Looking at e. g. Eclipse frightens me. Then there is Struts, Spring, JPA, Hibernate, Seam, just to throw in some buzzwords, that I cannot put into clear relation to each other. Can you point me to some tutorials or books that could help me? What are the technologies you absolutely have to know, the JSRs that are widely implemented in the industry? Or, if you are an employer: What does a “Junior Java Web developer” have to know? Thanks for your suggestions!

  • Can&rsquo;t eject external USB or Firewire drive in Windows 7

    - by Kelly Jones
    As a SharePoint developer, I work a lot with Virtual Machines (presently using Windows Virtual PC, with Windows 7).  I’m using these VMs with my laptop, and in order to get better performance, I’ve moved them to external hard drives.  (These drives have faster RPMs, larger caches, and a larger capacity, than the internal drive.)  I have one large external drive at home, another similar drive at the office, and a small, slow portable drive that I carry with me. So, at the end of each day at the office, I copy the files from the external drive to my portable drive and then once I get home, I copy them from the portable to the larger external drive I leave at home.  I do this for a couple of reasons: so I can work at home and secondly, so I have backup copies.  (Often, I feel like I’m in the movie “Office Space” when copying the files before I leave the office). Anyway, after the files are copied, I safely eject the external drives, and then hibernate my laptop.  I’ve been doing this for over a year now, but within the last couple of months I started to have issues disconnecting the drives.  Intermittently, some application/process would have a lock on some file on the drive that would keep Windows from safely ejecting it. After looking into it, I found that it was actually the Windows search service that was accessing the drive! Since I wasn’t using Windows search to look for stuff on these drives, I removed them as locations to index. To do this in Windows 7, you need to go to Indexing Options (just type “Indexing” into the search box in the Start menu…).  One of the choices displayed will then be Indexing Options, so click on it and you should then see a window similar to this:   Click on the Modify button and you’ll see this window: Notice the different drives listed above.  My “FreeAgent XTreme (F:)” drive was checked for some reason, which was causing the indexing service to scan the drive looking for new files to make available in the search results.  Ever since I unchecked this box, I’ve been able to safely eject the drive.

  • Java devs: why not use Groovy?

    - by FarmBoy
    OK, so there are quite a few people using Java these days. But as the language nears two decades of age, it isn't exactly the coolest option out there. Many of us are excited about dynamic languages with some functional features like Ruby or Python, even though we spend our days using Java. So why is it that the adoption of Groovy has been so slow? It seems that Groovy offers much of the benefits of Ruby and Python, but it is far easier to transition a Java shop to Groovy. Even if performance were the concern, it seems that many would want to use Groovy for testing the production Java code. Or use Groovy/Grails for internal apps in which performance concerns are minimal. Or for writing one-off scripts to generate code. Yet Groovy languishes outside of Tiobe's top 50 languages, for reasons that are unclear to me. I have been using Groovy and Grails professionally for about four months, and it has been an excellent experience, such that I hate to think about going back to the Java/Spring/Hibernate model. Does anyone have any sense on why we are not seeing more significant migration from Java to Groovy? Note that I'm not asking why Java developers are still using Java for new projects. My question is: Why is it that most Java Developers are still not using Groovy at all. Edit: I am assuming that all good developers see the utility of dynamic typing and higher order functions for some programming tasks. (Even if it is deemed inappropriate for production code.)

  • Advantages of using pure JavaScript over JQuery

    - by Shivan Dragon
    What are the advantages of using Javascript-only versus using JQuery-only? I have limited experience with JavaScript and JQuery coding. I've added bits and snippets of each to HTML pages but I've mostly coded server-side stuff in other languages. I've noticed that while you can theoretically do the same things using either of the two approaches (and of course you can even mix 'em up in the same project) there seems to be a tendency to always start using JQuery from the very beginning no-matter what the project demands are. So I'm simply wondering, are there any punctual benefits to not use JQuery-only but instead to just use plain old JavaScript? I know this looks like a non-question because it can be said about it that "there's no definite answer" or "it can be debated for ever", but I'm actually hoping for punctual answers such as "You can do this in one approach and you cannot do it with the other". ==EDIT== As per scrwtp's comment, I'm not referring just to the DOM Handling part. My question is rather: JQuery is a library. For Javascript. What I find strange about this library as opposed to other libraries for other languages is that in JQyery's case it seems to be designed to be able to use it exclusively and not need to touch Javascript directly. This is as opposed to let's say Hibernate and SQL, where even though the library (or rather framework in this case, but I think the analogy still applies) takes the handle on A LOT of aspects, you still get to use SQL when using it, at least for some fringe cases. However in JQuery & Javascript case, you could do anything you do with Javascript using only JQuery (or at least that's how it seems to me).

  • Create Windows Bootloader/Boot into Windows from Ubuntu

    - by Kincaid
    I have computer that dual-boots (or tri-boots) Windows 8 Release Preview, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 12.04. Grub boots between Windows 8 and Ubuntu; for which I use primarily. Recently, I have decided I wanted to remove Ubuntu, as I hardly used it. As a stupid mistake, I deleted the Ubuntu partition before changing the bootloader to replace Grub. Whenever I know boot the machine, it gives me the "grub-rescue" prompt -- I am unable to boot into either Windows (8 nor 7), nor Ubuntu (except via USB, of course). I do not have any Windows 7/8 recovery media, so that isn't an option. Please note that after I deleted the Ubuntu partition, I put the PC into hibernate, and then turned it on. This means the C:\ [Windows 8] drive cannot be mounted. I don't know if that is bad, but it definitely doesn't make things better. I am currently booting Ubuntu via USB, in an effort to restore the Windows bootloader solutions. I have looked into using boot-repair to solve the problem using the instructions here, although after attempting to apply the changes, it gave the error: "Please install the [mbr] packages. Then try again." I don't know why I'm getting this error; is there a way to install the 'mbr packages?' I honestly don't know what exactly they are, nor how to install them. Is there any options I have not yet exhausted to be able to boot back into Windows, in the case that there is a better way? In the end, I want to set the bootloader to boot into Windows 8, but booting into either Windows 7 or 8 is fine -- I can use EasyBCD from there. Is there a simple solution to this? I've checked BIOS, and I haven't been able to find a way to boot into Windows. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Which logs will tell me about the Touchpad and Keyboard locking up?

    - by Sepero
    I have an Asus N53SM laptop that I leave running for several weeks at a time. I never put it in hibernate or suspend, I only close the lid when I'm not using it. After a few days or weeks of running, the touchpad and keyboard will Both lock up (at the same time) for no apparent reason. I could be just surfing the internet when it happens. The touchpad and keyboard seem to only lock up when I'm actively using the laptop (not when idle), which may mean it's related to something I press, but I'm not sure? The touchpad never locks or unlocks when Pressing FN and the designated touchpad lock key (it does not seem to work on Linux). While the touchpad and keyboard are locked, I am able to plug in my USB mouse and successfully use it to control the screen cursor. I can also remotely get into the system with vnc and ssh, everything seems to run fine there as well. No processes appear out of control. It's just the laptops physical touchpad and keyboard that are locking up. How might I go about diagnosing this problem? What system logs to look at? (anything specific to look for in them?) Perhaps I should try reloading some modules? Any thing else I should inspect?

  • Architecture design with MyBatis mappers

    - by Wolf
    I am creating rest web service for providing data. I am using Spring MVC for handling rest requests, and MyBatis for data access. Application should be designed in the way that it should be easy to change the data access implementation (for example to hibernate or something else) and it has to be fast (so I am trying to avoid unnecessary overcomplication of design). Now my question is about the general design of layers. I would normally use DAO interface and then different implementations for different data access strategies, but MyBatis uses interfaces to access the data. So I can think of 2 possible models but I am not sure which one is better or if there is any other nice way: Controller layer - uses Service layer interfaces services are then implemented for each data access stretegy - for example for mybatis: service implementation uses Mapper classes to access data and do whatever it needs to do with them and sends them to controller layer Controller layer - uses Service layer - service layer uses DAO interfaces DAOs are then implemented for each data access strategy - for example for mybatis: DAO class uses mapper interface to access data and sends them to service layer, service layer then do whatever it needs to do with them and sends them to controller layer I prefer the first strategy as it seems to be less complicated, but then I would have to write all of the service code for another data access again. What do you think? Thank You

  • Spring Roo Database Reverse Engineer with Oracle

    - by kerry
    So you are trying to reverse engineer an Oracle database with roo? Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions with the Oracle JDBC Drivers, this is a little difficult. There are a few blog posts and forum threads that address the problem but I figured I would post what worked for me here. First, you need to download the appropriate Oracle Drivers from Oracle. The required login, stringent password requirements, nosy registration form, and general system instability made this a pretty painful step for me. I’d also like to say that companies that have password requirements that don’t allow symbols (or any other non-standard requirement) have a special place in my heart. Having to recover my password every time I go to your site virtually guarantees I will only go there when I absolutely have to (not often). Anyways, once you have it downloaded you need to install is with maven: mvn install:install-file -Dfile=~/Downloads/ojdbc6.jar -DgroupId=com.oracle -DartifactId=ojdbc6 -Dversion=11.2.0.3 -Dpackaging=jar -DgeneratePom=true Here comes the fun part. You need to create an osgi wrapper for the driver to install it in roo. Otherwise, roo cannot see the driver. Create a new folder and put the contents of the oracle roo addon pom gist I created. Now build it with maven. You may want to change some of the artifact ids and dependencies for your particular situation. mvn package No open a roo shell and execute the following command: osgi install --url file:///Users/me/my-osgi-project/target/the-jar-it-built.jar Now run (in roo): jpa setup --provider HIBERNATE --database ORACLE dependency remove --groupId com.oracle --artifactId ojdbc14 --version 10.2.0.2 dependency add --groupId com.oracle --artifactId ojdbc6 --version 11.2.0.3 database properties set --key database.driverClassName --value oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver database properties set --key database.url --value jdbc:oracle:thin:@%YOUR_CONNECTION_INFO% database properties set --key database.username --value %YOUR_USERNAME% database properties set --key database.password --value %YOUR_PASSWORD% database reverse engineer --schema %YOUR_SCHEMA% --package ~.domain If you have any package loading exceptions when running the reverse engineer command you can uninstall the osgi bundle, set the package to optional in the osgi pom in the IncludedPackages tag (javax.some.package.*;resolution:=optional) rebuild, then reinstall in roo.

  • Netbook performs hard shutdown without warning on low battery power

    - by Steve Kroon
    My Asus EEE netbook performs a hard shutdown when it reaches low battery power, without giving any warning - i.e. the power just goes off, without any shutdown process. I can't find anything in the syslog, and no error messages are printed before it happens. I've had this problem on previous (K)Ubuntu versions, and hoped updating to Ubuntu Precise would help resolve the issue, but it hasn't. The option in the Power application for "when power is critically low" is currently blank - the only options are a (grayed-out) hibernate and "Power off". I have re-installed indicator-power to no effect. The time remaining reported by acpi is unstable, as is the time remaining reported by gnome-power-statistics. (For example, running acpi twice in succession, I got 2h16min, and then 3h21min remaining. These sorts of jumps in the remaining time are also in the gnome-power-statistics graphs.) It might be possible to write a script to give me advance warning (as per @RanRag's comment below), but I would prefer to isolate why I don't get a critical battery notification from the system before this happens, so that I can take action as appropriate (suspend/shutdown/plug in power) when I get a notification. • Bad at math, feeling limited

    - by Peter Stain
    Currently I'm a java developer, making websites. I'm really bad at math, in high school I got suspened because of it once. I didn't program then and had no interest in math. I started programming after high school and started feeling that my poor math skills are limiting me. I feel like the programming's not that hard for me. Though web development in general is not that hard, i guess. I've been doing Spring and Hibernate a lot. What i'm trying to ask is : if I understand and can manage these technologies and programming overall, would it mean that I have some higher than average prerequisite for math and details? Would there be any point or would it be easy for me to take some courses in high school math and get a BSc in math maybe? This web development is really starting to feel like not my cup of tea anymore, i would like to do something more interesting. I'm 25 now and feel like stuck. Any help appreciated.

  • Spotlight on mkyong

    - by MarkH
    Occasionally, I'd like to share a blog I've discovered or that someone has passed along to me. Criteria are few, but in a nutshell, it must be: Java-related. (Doh!) Interesting. A good blog is exciting to read at some level, whether due to perspective, eye-catching writing, or technical insight. It doesn't have to read like a Stephen King novel, but it should grab you somehow. Technically deep or technically broad. A site that dives deeply, quickly is a great reference for particular topics/tasks. On the other hand, one that covers a lot of ground at a high-but-still-technical level can be a handy site to visit occasionally as well. Both are what I consider "bookmarkable", but for different reasons. Drumroll, please... With that in mind, this Blog Spotlight is cast upon mkyong.com, a site I stumbled across that offers a little bit of everything for various Java dev audiences. The title indicates the site is for "Java web development tutorials", and indeed it does have these: JSF, Spring, Struts, Hibernate, JAX-WS, JAX-RS, and numerous other topics are addressed to varying degrees. The site isn't devoted exclusively to server-side tutorials, though. Recent posts include mobile development topics, and the links at the bottom of the page connect you to reference pages and other useful sites. I've poked around through a couple of the tutorials and, while they won't take you from "zero to hero", they do seem to provide a nice overview of the subject at hand. They also offer an occasional explanatory comment that is missing from far too many texts, sites, and doc pages. It's not a perfect site, but I like it. The Bottom Line mkyong.com offers a nice "summary site" of server-side tutorials, mobile dev posts, and reference links. Check it out! All the best,Mark

  • Best Persistence choice for J2EE-App with frequently changing Data Model

    - by Ben-G
    Whenever I develop a J2EE-Application, I at some point decide to switch from my dummy Persistence (Simply Using Lists and other Data Structures) to some Sort of Database Persistence. Mostly when I hope the Data Model is more or less complete. From this point on, changes to the data model become exhausting, but unluckily they occur rather often. I've used different Object-Relational-Mappers (iBatis, Hibernate) for my projects. They definitely reduce the pain coming with Data Model changes, but they anyway let me adjust code/configuration at 3 or 4 places for every single change. To me, that's cumbersome and error prone. I made a better experience with DB4O, which simply persists Java Objects as they are, but I believe it's performance does not scale for huge applications. Is there anyway to maintain performance while letting out all the ugly configuration work? I'm seeking a performant framework which really hides persistence from my code. Wish for thinking? Or am I missing out THE technology? Hope you can help.

  • Tips for switching jobs and moving into web based programming?

    - by JerryC
    I graduated in 2006 with a computer science degree and got solid grades (3.5 overall 3.8 in my major) For the past 4.5 years I've been working as a Software Engineer doing primarily rich client development. Most of my experience is with Java, Swing and C++. I've done a lot of network programming and I have acquired some skill working & debugging in distributed environments. I would like to switch jobs and move into a role where I can get exposure to some new technologies and frameworks. I would like to move into a more web development role but I find my lack of web development experience is hurting me. 90% of the jobs I see advertised are looking for one of two skill sets: 1) Stereotypical server side Java web developer. Experience with Spring, Hibernate, J2EE, etc. 2) Stereotypical front end web developer. Experience with Javascript, jQuery, HTML5, GWT, CSS, etc I find most of these companies are looking really specifically for this experience and they are not willing to take on good programmers/ CS fundamental guys who lack experience with this stuff. I would love to get a job doing stuff like this, but have my skills become out of date and unmarketable? Any opinions on ways to sell myself to help get a new position?

  • installing ubuntu on SSD

    - by kunal
    Going to install Ubuntu 10.10 on new intel x25M 80GB SSD. It will be fresh install. I have been googling for past few days and getting overwhelming articles/blogs/Q&As. One particularly very useful being: Optimize for SSD (I could not post other links as i dont have enough credits) But with so many suggestions and differences of opinions (on different links) this simple OS install process seems to be daunting task to me and I really want to stick with ubuntu (although have used for very short period of time). Can someone help me by answering few questions (yes they are repeated as i couldnt comprehend the answers elsewhere) which file system (ext2/3/4 or something else)? (consider SSD life) can it be changed after installation? should i partition the disk? (as we do in traditional HDD) for now, no plan of dual booting. Only ubuntu will live on scarce space of 80GB SSD. i have 2 GB RAM, should i still allocate swap space (if i dont allocate swap space, can i still hibernate the machine)? will swap space impact SSD life? should i consider putting additional 1GB RAM to avoid swap space? Linux experience - absolute novice intended usage - heavy browsing, programming, regular video/music and some other non-CPU/RAM-intensive programs. will backup big files to an external hard drive. laptop config - 3 yr old vaio, core2 duo, 2GB RAM Please pardon the repetition and i really appreciate anyone helping me getting started with ubuntu.
