What's a better choice for SQL-backed number crunching - Ruby 1.9, Python 2, Python 3, or PHP 5.3?

Crterias of 'better': fast im math and simple (little of fields, many records) db transactions, convenient to develop/read/extend, flexible, connectible. The task is to use a common web development scripting language to process and calculate long time series and multidimensional surfaces (mostly selectint/inserting sets of floats and dong maths with rhem). The choice is Ruby 1.9, Python 2, Python 3, PHP 5.3, Perl 5.12, JavaScript (node.js). All the data is to be stored in a relational database (due to its heavily multidimensional nature), all the communication with outer world is to be done by means of web services.

How to keep an Hibernate's Session open until the page is rendered

I'm having the following problem: I'm using Oracle ADF for the view and controller of my app. With OpenSessionInViewFilter, I intercept the request and open an Hibernate's Session, and it is closed as soon as the bean's method finishes. What I need is to keep the Session opened until the page is rendered, because in my JSP y use the lazy attributes of the object i load from the DB. For example: When I enter index.jspx the IndexBean#main() is executed: public class IndexBean{ private DBObject myDBObject; public String main(){ this.myDBObject = this.myDAO.loadObjectFromDB(); return null; } } in index.jspx I have: ... <af:inputText value="#{myDBObject.lazyAttribute}" /> ... I'd like that the Hibernate's Session keeps open until the af:inputText is processed. Is this possible? How? Thanks in advance

Strategies for generating Zend Cache Keys

ATM i'm manually generating a cache key based on the method name and parameters, then follow to the normal cache pattern. This is all done in the Controller and i'm calling a model class that 'extends Zend_Db_Table_Abstract'. public function indexAction() { $cache = Zend_Registry::get('cache'); $individualleaguekey = sprintf("getIndividualLeague_%d_%s",$leagueid,$division->code); if(!$leaguetable = $cache->load($individualleaguekey)) { $table = new Model_DbTable_Raceresult(); $leaguetable = $table->getIndividualLeague($leagueid,$division,$races); $cache->save($leaguetable, $individualleaguekey); } $this->view->leaguetable = $leaguetable; .... I want to avoid the duplication of parameters to the cache creation method and also to the model method, so i'm thinking of moving the caching logic away from my controller class and into model class packaged in './model/DbTable', but this seems incorrect since the DB model should only handle SQL operations. Any suggestions on how i can implement a clean patterned solution?

I am using the Jquery Wysiwyg editor and I am trying to capture the html that makes up the content area to store in a DB. Is there anyway to get html of a element and save it as a string? My code looks like tihs <iframe id="wysiwyg_IFrame> <html> <head></head> <body> <ul> <li>This is a test</li> </ul> </body> </html> </iframe> I would either like to get a string that starts with <html>....</html> or just the body <body>...</body> does anyone know if this is possible? How to order the items in a nested LINQ-provided collection

I've got a (SQL Server) database table called Category. And another database table called SubCategory. SubCategory has a foreign key relationship to Category. Because of this, thanks to LINQ, each Cateogory has a property called SubCategories and LINQ is nice enough to return all the SubCategories associated with my Category when I grab it. If I want to sort the Categories alphabetically, I can just do: return db.Categories.OrderBy(c => c.Name); However, I have no idea how to order the SubCategories collection inside each Category. My goal is to return a collection of Categories, where all of the SubCategory collections inside of them are ordered alphabetically by Name.

logging problems for swing applications

what kind of logging frame work or API to use for swing applications which is used by multiple users in Unix. Is it possible to log all verbose/exception in one file per day or event one user one file per day? Since the user can open the same application with multiple instance. I also have another solution is to save the exceptions into database. But if I miss the excetpions, those will not be saved in DB. anybody has better solutions? Thank you very much!

I am using GridView in asp .net and editing data with edit command field property (as we know after updating the edited row, we automatically update the database), and I want to use transactions (with begin to commit statement - including rollback) to commit this update query in database, after clicking in some button (after some events for example), not automatically to insert or update the edited data from grid directly to the DB...so I want to save them somewhere temporary (even many edited rows - not just one row) and then to confirm the transaction - to update the real tables in database... Any suggestions are welcomed... Higlight selected date in VB.NET MonthCalender

Hi , I am using MonthCalender control in vb.net to select a date. I am able to save the selected date to DB and also retrieve and bold the previous selected date. But even though date is bolded it is not displayed when the form loads. It still highlights today's date. What Do i do to highlight the previous chosen dates. I need to check to see where the time period falls in a 2 year period broken into two lots of quarters then display what quarters each record falls into. Quarter 1 includes June 09, Jul 09, Aug 09 Quarter 2 includes Sept 09, Oct 09, Nov 09 Quarter 3 includes Dec 09, Jan 10, Feb 10 Quarter 4 includes Mar 10, Apr 10, May 10 Quaretr 5 includes Jun 10, Jul 10... e.g. 01/10/09 - 01/06/10 would fall into quarters 2, 3, 4 & 5 I am very new to .NET so any examples would be much appreciated.

Are there any issues with MySQL's i18n(indic language) support ?

Hi All, We're evaluating MySQL and PostgreSQL for building our indic language web application which will use MySQL or PostgreSQL. One of my colleagues mentioned that MySQL had issues with i18n. I mostly come from the Oracle world and although I've played a lil with MySQL, I don't know enough to know that there are issues with its i18n support. Does anyone know issues with MySQL's i18n support and if PostgreSQL would be better placed for building an application with indic language support(kannada, telugu, tamil, etc) ? Just so you know, we're going to be using J2EE to build this application and we will be using JDBC drivers to access the DB. P.S : Will anything change if we were to use Rails to build the app instead of J2EE ? Thank you,

Keep an ASP.NET IIS website responsive when time between visits is long

After years of ASP.NET development I'm actually quite surprised that I can't seem to find a satisfying solution for this. Why does an IIS ASP.NET site always seem to fall asleep (for 2-6 seconds) after a certain time of inactivity (after several hours), during which no HTTP response is sent from server to client. This happens on any type of site, one page or many, db or not, regardless the settings. How can I fix this? During the wait time, the server is not busy and there are no high peaks or (.NET) memory shortages. My guess is, it has to do with Windows moving the IIS process to the background and its memory to the page file, but I'm not sure. Anybody any idea? EDIT: one solution is to send some HTTP request once an hour or so, but I hope for something more constructive. EDIT: what I meant is: after hours of inactivity, it pauses several seconds on any new HTTP request.

Most efficient way to update a MySQL Database on a Linux host with that of an ASP.Net Form on Window

My kind webhost (1and1) royally asked me to go elsewhere to do something like this. I have 2 sites. One of them was developed by a .Net programmer. Now I am contracted to implement a PHP site and fetch data from the .Net site. There is an ASP.Net form that a customer fills and when they hit submit, the data gets stored in SQL Server DB. How do I also store the same data in MySQL parallelly? I cannot directly use some database connectors with ASP.Net since MySQL connectivity is not supported on 1and1 Windows hosting (biz account, no less!). What I thought of is to publish an RSS feed of entries in ASP.Net site and routinely scrape that data into MySQL on Linux host. It is an overkill, I know. Not efficient. I thought I would pick the best brains on SOF to get a different, efficient opinion. Thanks in advance guys...

PHP Serialization Will not work correctly.

Hi, I am developing and doing all the testing on a local machine using PHP Version 5.3.3-1ubuntu9.1 version. The host machine is PHP Version 5.2.15. All the seriliaze arguments are identical. The problems is when i try to login the user on my test local machine i do the following : $user->getByUserId($results['id'],$db); $_SESSION['user'] = serialize($user); which retrieved me and serialize the user. and i just load it back when ever i detect that a session exists $user->LoadFromObject(unserialize($_SESSION['user'])); This works perfectly on my test machine. Just transfered the files on the host to see if i can get a beta version out but i keep on getting Warning: unserialize() expects parameter 1 to be string, object given in /home/gamerent/public_html/beta/includes/header.php on line 19 i have noticed that if i echo the $_SESSION['user'] in both system the test will indeed display me the serializated one but the main one will just show me the object and will not serialize the $user

Redirects in RoR: Which one to use out of redirect_to and head :moved_permanently?

Hello, we are making a website that takes a generated incoming link and forwards the user who is clicking on it to another website while saving a record of the action in our DB. I guess it's basically what ad-services like AdSense do. However, what is the best way to redirect the user? I think html-meta-tag-redirects are out of question. So what other options are there? head :moved_permanently, :location => "http://www.domain.com/" This one is a 301-redirect. The next one is a 302: redirect_to "http://www.domain.com" Are there any others? And which is best to use for our case? The links are highly-dynamic and change all the time. We want to make sure we don't violate any existing standards and of course we don't want search-engines to tag us as spammers (which we are not, btw). Thanks!

From DLL I have to send large of amount of data to EXE, which would vary from 50 chars to 2000 chars and more(The data is recordid of records saved in DB). I thought about two options to do that: 1. Using SendMessage- In which data's will be sent in batch. 2. Use an Intermediate file to transfer data. Can anyone list out the pros and cons of methods. What can cause a double page request?

I am currently investigating a double request problem on my site. Not all the time, but sometimes, a requested page will in fact load twice...which is not a problem really until it is on a page with PHP that inserts stuff into my db on request (my tracking script). I have read that an empty src in an image tag, and an empty url() in a css background could potentially cause the page to be requested twice. However, I can't find any problems with those. Is there anything else that could be causing something like this?

Merging MySQL Structure and Data

I have a MySQL database running on a deployment machine which also contains data. Then I have another MySQL database which has evolved in terms of STRUCTURE + DATA for some time. I need a way to merge the changes (ONLY) for both structure and data to the DB in deployment machine without disturbing the existing data. Does anyone know of a tool available which can do this safely. I have had a look at a few comparison tools but I need a tool which can automate the merge operation. Note also that most of the data in the tables is in BINARY so I can't use many file comparison tools. Does any one know of a solution to this? thanks

Hello I just got started looking at Lua as an easy way to access the SQLite DLL, but I ran into an error while trying to use the DB-agnostic LuaSQL module: require "luasql.sqlite" module "luasql.sqlite" print("Content-type: Text/html\n") print("Hello!") Note that I'm trying to start from the most basic setup, so only have the following files in the work directory, and sqlite.dll is actually the renamed sqlite3.dll from the LuaForge site: Directory of C:\Temp <DIR> luasql lua5.1.exe lua5.1.dll hello.lua Directory of C:\Temp\luasql sqlite.dll Am I missing some binaries that would explain the error? Thank you. Edit: I renamed the DLL to its original sqlite3.dll and updated the source to reflect this (originally renamed it because that's how it was called in a sample I found). At this point, here's what the code looks like... require "luasql.sqlite3" -- attempt to call field 'sqlite' (a nil value) env = luasql.sqlite() env:close() ... and the error message I'm getting: C:\>lua5.1.exe hello.lua lua5.1.exe: hello.lua:4: attempt to call field 'sqlite' (a nil value)

Possible to get the line number of the currently executing sproc in SQL Server?

A few years back I worked in a Sybase/Delphi environment, using the BDE to connect to the DB server. We had a little Delphi app that, given the name of a currently executing stored procedure, could tell you what line of that sproc was currently being executed. This was exceptionally useful for debugging sprocs that seemed to be hanging. I'd like to use this functionality in SQL Server, but I can't remember whether it was a Sybase or a BDE feature. Is this functionality available in SQL Server and if so, what command(s) do I need to use to view this information?

PHP MVC correct usage

What is the correct (recommended method) for passing information to a view in a MVC environment. Currently we use Zend Framework, where we write classes to handle specific things EG a Book class with a save and load method to retrieve info from the DB, which is called from a particular nameAction(). What I would like to know is what is the best way to pass this information to the view, in some cases we do $this-view-book_name = $book-getBookName(); and in other cases we do the following $this-view-book = $book; OR $this-view-books = Book_Manager::getAllBooks(); and then access the object(s) properties in the view. Information on-line suggests we try limit what access a view has to information, i.e pass them only what they need and in some cases people say its ok to pass stuff through as long as nothing is done to that information. DatabaseName.bak File Transfer Problem

I have downloaded databasename.bak file from my hosting company, when i tried to restore that DB file in SQL server 2008 it is keep on giving me following error. The media family on device 'C:\go4sharepoint_1384_8481.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241) According to this error and from following link http://www.sqlcoffee.com/Troubleshooting047.htm Later when I tried to restore file on server it was restored correctly, but when I tried to transfer same file using FTP Software FileZila and tried to restore that downloaded file it was giving above error. That is file is getting corrupted on the way to tranfer using FTP. Any Idea how can i avoid that file to get courrupt? Note: File is downloaded using FileZila - TransferType as Binary. Thank you.

I'm trying to follow the "Your first project" tutorial at http://wiki.fluentnhibernate.org/Getting_started and have hit a roadblock. When I try to run the console application, I'm getting this error: An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more detail. I have created a SQLite database "firstProject.db" and referenced the full path to the file in the call to: return Fluently.Configure() .Database(SQLiteConfiguration.Standard .UsingFile(DbFile)) .Mappings(m => m.FluentMappings.AddFromAssemblyOf<Program>()) .ExposeConfiguration(BuildSchema) .BuildSessionFactory(); so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. What/where is this "PotentialReasons" collection? Thank you for the help. Andy
