• Why isn't an exception thrown when the right .NET framework version is not present?

- by Nate Heinrich
We have a .NET application which targets .NET 3.5. Our clients run it from a shared drive (very infrequently) in order to have a central config file location. We have noticed that if a workstation accesses the shared drive and runs the program, but does not have .NET 3.5 installed, nothing happens, no error, no exception, no log entry, it just doesn't launch. Why is there no error message shown in windows by the CLR? Is there something I can put at the beginning of the code that would ensure that a proper error message is displayed? It is not an option to run an installer that would check for prereqs, as we are only installing it in one central location. Thanks.

• What web UI framework is most suitable for building dynamic pages / forms?

- by waxwing
Hello, We are at a stage where we are considering different Web UI frameworks (most likely component based ones such as GWT, JSF, Wicket, Vaadin, etc). One of the main use cases / constraints is that it must support generating dynamic pages. I.e., the page/form layout and components is stored in a database and is changeable at runtime, and from this pages are generated. We are also going to write static layouts, but that is not the main focus of this question. I thought maybe the user community here can share experiences of different frameworks in this context. Are there differences in ease of implementation and what is suitable?

• Can a simple web form like this get hacked?

- by Haskella
Hi I have a web form that sends a string to one php file which redirects them to a corresponding URL. I've searched about web form hacking and I've only received information about PHP and SQL... my site only uses a single PHP file, very basic etc. Would it be open to any exploits? I'm obviously not going to post the URL, but here is some code I was working on for the php file: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2888077/newbie-php-coding-problem-header-function-maybe-i-need-someone-to-check-my-cod Thanks

• how do I get foreign_key to work in this simple has_many, belongs_to relationship?

- by rpflo
I'm pulling data from Harvest. Here are my two models and schema: # schema create_table "clients", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "harvest_id" end create_table "projects", :force => true do |t| t.string "name" t.integer "client_id" t.integer "harvest_id" end # Client.rb has_many :projects, :foreign_key => 'client_id' # not needed, I know # Project.rb belongs_to :client, :foreign_key => 'harvest_id' I'm trying to get the Projects to find their client by matching Project.client_id to a Client.harvest_id. Here is what I'm getting instead. > Project.first.client_id => 187259 Project.first.client => nil Client.find(187259).projects => [] Is this possible? Thanks!

• Simple way to reorder methods of a Java class in IntelliJ?

- by Péter Török
Is there a simpler way of reordering methods within a class source file in IntelliJ than cutting and pasting the code manually? Nowadays I often need this while refactoring legacy code, e.g. to move related methods close to each other in the source code. In Eclipse AFAIK there is a view similar to the Structure view of IntelliJ, where I can drag and drop methods around. However, this does not work in IntelliJ and I couldn't find any hints from its help either. I am using IntelliJ 9.0.2 to be specific.

• Simple Detached pThread does not cancel! (cout blocks and interleaves even if mutexed)

- by Gabriel
I have a hard problem here, which I can not solve and do not find the right answer on the net: I have created a detached thread with a clean up routing, the problem is that on my Imac and Ubuntu 9.1 (Dual Core). I am not able to correctly cancel the detached thread in the fallowing code: #include <iostream> #include <pthread.h> #include <sched.h> #include <signal.h> #include <time.h> pthread_mutex_t mutex_t; using namespace std; static void cleanup(void *arg){ pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << " doing clean up"<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } static void *thread(void *aArgument) { pthread_setcancelstate(PTHREAD_CANCEL_ENABLE,NULL); pthread_setcanceltype(PTHREAD_CANCEL_DEFERRED,NULL); pthread_cleanup_push(&cleanup,NULL); int n=0; while(1){ pthread_testcancel(); sched_yield(); n++; pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << " Thread 2: "<< n<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } pthread_cleanup_pop(0); return NULL; } int main() { pthread_t thread_id; pthread_attr_t attr; pthread_attr_init(&attr); pthread_attr_setdetachstate(&attr,PTHREAD_CREATE_DETACHED); int error; if (pthread_mutex_init(&mutex_t,NULL) != 0) return 1; if (pthread_create(&thread_id, &attr, &(thread) , NULL) != 0) return 1; pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "waiting 1s for thread...\n" <<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); int n =0; while(n<1E3){ pthread_testcancel(); sched_yield(); n++; pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << " Thread 1: "<< n<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "canceling thread...\n" <<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); if (pthread_cancel(thread_id) == 0) { //This doesn't wait for the thread to exit pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "detaching thread...\n"<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); pthread_detach(thread_id); while (pthread_kill(thread_id,0)==0) { sched_yield(); } pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "thread is canceled"; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); } pthread_mutex_lock(&mutex_t); cout << "exit"<<endl; pthread_mutex_unlock(&mutex_t); return 0; } When I replace the Cout with printf() i workes to the end "exit" , but with the cout (even locked) the executable hangs after outputting "detaching thread... It would be very cool to know from a Pro, what the problem here is?. Why does this not work even when cout is locked by a mutex!? Thanks a lot for your support!!

• Single page Web App in Java framework or examples?

- by Adam Gent
Has anyone seen an example or done the following in Java: http://duganchen.ca/single-page-web-app-architecture-done-right/ That is a design a single page web app that will work with Google SEO with out massive violation of DRY using Java technologies? It doesn't seem terrible hard to do this on my own but I was curious (and lazy) to see if someone had already done it with either Spring or JAX-RS.

• Why doesn't C# do "simple" type inference on generics?

- by Ken Birman
Just curious: sure, we all know that the general case of type inference for generics is undecidable. And so C# won't do any kind of subtyping at all: if Foo<T> is a generic, Foo<int> isn't a subtype of Foo<T>, or Foo or of anything else you might cook up. And sure, we all hack around this with ugly interface or abstract class definitions. But... if you can't beat the general problem, why not just limit the solution to cases that are easy. For example, in my list above, it is OBVIOUS that Foo<int> is a subtype of Foo<T> and it would be trivial to check. Same for checking against Foo. So is there some other deep horror that would creep forth from the abyss if they were to just say, aw shucks, we'll do what we can? Or is this just some sort of religious purity on the part of the language guys at Microsoft?

• asp.net 4.0 webforms - how to keep ContentPlaceHolder1_ out of client id's in a simple way?

- by James Manning
I'm attempting to introduce master pages to an existing webforms site that's avoided using them because of client id mangling in the past (and me not wanting to deal with the mangling and doing <% foo.ClientID % everywhere :) GOAL: use 'static' id values (whatever is in the server control's id attribute) except for data-bound / repeating controls which would break for those cases and therefore need suffixes or whatever to differentiate (basically, Predictable) Now that the site migrated to ASP.NET 4.0, I first attempted to use ClientIDMode of Static (in the web.config) but that broke too many places doing repeating controls (checkboxes inside gridviews, for instance) since they all resulted with the same id. So, I then tried Predictable (again, just in the web.config) so that the repeating controls wouldn't have conflicting id's, and it works well except that the master page content placeholder (which is indeed a naming container) is still reflecting in the resulting client id's (for instance, ContentPlaceHolder1_someCheckbox). Certainly I could leave the web.config setting as static and then go through all the databound/repeating controls switch them to Predictable, but I'm hoping there's some easier/simpler way to get that effect without having to scatter ClientIDMode attributes in those N number of places (or extend all those databound controls with my own usercontrol that just sets clientidmode, or whatever). I even thought of leaving web.config set to static and doing a master or basepage handler (preinit? not sure if that would work or not) that would go walk Controls with OfType<INamingContainer() (might be a better choice on the type, but that seems like a good starting choice looking at repeater and gridview) and then set those to Predictable so I'd get static for all my 'normal' things outside of repeating controls but not have to deal with static inside things like gridview/repeater/etc. I don't see any way to mark the content placeholder such that it 'opts out' of being included in child id's - setting the ID of the placeholder to empty/blank doesn't work as it's a required attribute :) At that point I figured there was a better/simpler way that I was missing and decided to ask on SO :) Edit: I thought about changing all my 'fetch by id' jquery calls from $('#foo') to fetch_by_id('foo') and then having that function return the 'right one' by checking $('#foo').length and then $('#ContentPlaceHolder1_foo').length (and maybe other patterns) or even just have it return $('#foo, #ContentPlaceHolder1_foo') (again, potentially other patterns) but changing all the places I fetch elements by id seemed pretty ugly too, and I'd like to avoid that abstraction layer if possible to do so easily :)

• Cocoa-Touch framework for speaking to a TCP socket?

- by Coocoo4Cocoa
I have a daemon running on a server that's latched onto a TCP/IP port. I'm looking to see if there's currently any support iPhone/Cocoa-touch frameworks that gives a nice OO wrapper for speaking to the daemon over an IP socket. I need to be able to interactively query the daemon with commands and retrieve back information. If there isn't any OO wrappers for such a task, what's the next best bet?

• What is a good Very-High level UI framework for JavaScript?

- by Robert Gould
I need to write a temporary Web-based graphical front-end for a custom server system. In this case performance and scalability aren't issues, since at most 10 people may check the system simultaneously. Also it should be PHP or Python (server) & JavaScript (client) (can't use Flex or Silverlight for very specific non-programming related issues). So I know I could use YUI or jQuery, but was wondering if there is something even more high-level that would say allow me to write such a little project within a few hours of work, and get done with it. Basically I want to be as lazy as possible (this is throw-away code anyways) and get the job done in as little time as possible. Any suggestions?

• Looking for C# framework for plotting scientific data: 2d/3d ...

- by Ivan
I need to visualize some scientific calculations. I generally prefer reusing code if there is already a good available instead of inventing wheels each time, that's why I am asking. I need a C# code to draw charts (just outputting a bitmap is ok) of 2d (y=f(x)) and 3d (z=f(x,y)) digital data sets (where any axis can be float, int or datetime), sometimes combined. If I go here and click 3D in the navigation bar on the left, there I can see what I need. But the cheapest version costs $759 there, looks scary for a hobby project of an east-european student :-(

• What is a better way to convert a simple sinatra app to static html pages?

- by dimus
A friend of mine asked to create a static website and I found that making such site using Sinatra is a pure joy. I just wrote all my routes like this: get '/index.html' do haml :index end get '/app.css' do sass :app end .... So I was able to use layouts, and haml and sass to put site together quickly. To create the static site I used wget -r -l2 http://localhost:4567 Which did work pretty well, but I imagine there is a better way to create a static site from a Sinatra code?

• Delphi simple TCP server hangs. The form freezes but the server continues managing the clients.

- by NeoNMD
I'm using a form with an IdTCPServer on it managing strings from the client with a AThread.connection.readln/writeln system. The string handling works and that isn't the problem. The thing is, the form with the server on it hangs and will not load, but it still managed all the clients connected to it so it IS running but it just doesn't work as a form. I'll make a guess that its sitting on a readline or something... but I have NO idea how i can fix this at this moment in time. Please help. procedure TMonitorFrm.ServerExecute(AThread: TIdPeerThread); procedure post(PostMessage:string); begin try AThread.Connection.WriteLn(PostMessage); except showmessage('Cannot post'); end; end; var ActClient : PClient; sTemp, CommBlock, NewCommBlock, ReceiverName, sContent, sSQL, sCommand : String; iCount2, iCount : Integer; sldb : TSQLiteDatabase; sltb : TSQLiteTable; begin if not AThread.Terminated and AThread.Connection.Connected then begin CommBlock := AThread.Connection.ReadLn(); ActClient := PClient(AThread.Data); ActClient.LastAction := Now; sCommand := copy(CommBlock,0,pos(',',CommBlock)-1); {seperate command} sContent := copy(CommBlock,pos(',',CommBlock)+1,length(CommBlock)-(pos(',',CommBlock)+1)); {seperate data block} iCount:= 0 ; if sCommand = 'Announce' then //SPECIAL begin { Do stuff for this command...} end else if sCommand = 'CheckSect' then {Etcetera...} procedure TMonitorFrm.FormCreate(Sender: TObject); var sCompetitionID : string; sldb : TSQLiteDatabase; sltb : TSQLiteTable; begin Clients := TThreadList.Create; Server.Active := True; AreaPnlList := TComponentList.Create; SectionPnlList := TComponentList.Create; Repeat until InputQuery('Competition Select', 'Please type the ID of the competition', sCompetitionID); iCompetitionID:=StrToInt(sCompetitionID); OpenDatabase(slDb); sltb:=slDb.GetTable('SELECT * FROM SectionTable WHERE CompetitionID='+sCompetitionID); Frame31.CreateSections(sltb,Frame31); sltb.Free; CloseDatabase(slDb); { This section needs to check the SQLite databases for sections and list them in the display window and makes a drag n drop profile... } end;

• Simple way of getting the Last.fm artist image for recently listened songs?

- by animuson
On the Last.fm website, your recently listened track include the 34x34 (or whatever size) image at the left of each song. However, in the RSS feed that they give you, no image URLs are provided for the songs. I was wondering if there was a good way of figuring out the ID for the image that needs to be used for that artist and displaying it based on the data that we're given. I know it is possible to load the artist page from their website and then grab the image values from JavaScript, but that seems overly complicated and would probably take quite some time to do. What we're given:

Owl City – Rainbow Veins

http://www.last.fm/music/Owl+City

and the 34x34 image for this song would be here (ID# 37056785). Does anything like this exist? I've considered storing the ID number in a cache of some sort once it has been checked once, but what if the image changes?

• Windows Structured Exception Handling: simple test program will not compile.

- by Jon
#include <windows.h> int main() { int* i = (int*)malloc(sizeof(int)); *i = 5; __try { free(i); free(i); } __except { return -1; } return 0; } I am trying to learn more about windows SEH. My first test program is giving me some real trouble. I have looked at the msdn documentation and I am still not really sure what I have wrong. I am getting the following errors when I try to compile this program: error C2059: syntax error : '{' error C2143: syntax error : missing ';' before '{' both on line 15. Thanks.
