• Testing ASP.NET security in Firefox

  I'm not sure whether this question belongs on StackOverflow or SuperUser, but here goes nothing... I'm trying to test out some basic security problems on my personal ASP.NET website to see exactly how the custom validators, etc. work when tampering with the data. I've been looking at the Firefox extension TamperData which seems to do the trick, but it doesn't feel very professional at all. The issues I'm having with TamperData is that the textbox for the POST data is way too small to hold the ASP.NET view-state, so I have to copy that data into Emacs and then back again to be productive at all. I also don't like that there doesn't seem to be an option to only tamper with data which is from/to localhost. Any ideas on better extensions for the task or better methods to test it?

• VS 2008 Profiler - Caller/Callee view showing bottom of stack

  Hello, I am currently trying to profile a class contained in a different assembly. To do this I created a small console application which calls into the public entry point of the class I want to profile. This enrty point is called Run(). This is working fine when I run my Console application in Debug mode and I can step into the Run() method. The Run() method calls a variety of other methods in its own assembly and other assemblies. However, when I create a new profiler of type "Instrumentation" in VS 2008, and run the profiler, the report shows my Main() function calling Run(), but in turn, when viewing the Caller/Callee report for my Run() method the report shows that the Run() method is the bottom of the stack. This is clearly not the case - could anyone please suggest why this is happening? Thanks.

• Mapping class properties to generic columns in table .NET

  I have have a SQL Server table which has generic names like Text1, Text2.. etc. The table was designed like this because the same structure is used for different projects. I have a class in .NET which has properties. Say a Customer class has a property called FirstName. How can I do the mapping from FirstName to Text1 just once (central place) in the application so that I don't have to remember and hard code the mappings all over the app when I create the different DAL methods? For example, I want the app to know when I want to update, insert a FirstName, the DAL automatically uses Text1. Basically I don't have to remember which property goes to which column. The idea is so the developers do not map the properlies/columns in a wrong way. It's always consistent. Note: Database inserts, updates and deletes are allowed through stored procedures only.

• JSON in an AJAX request

  I have a PHP API I'm working with that outputs everything as JSON. I need to call one of the API methods and parse it out using an AJAX request. I am using jQuery (though it shouldn't matter). When I make the request it errors out with a "parsererror" as the textStatus and a "Syntax Error: invalid label" when I make the request. • How to automate configurating DotNetNuke settings for several environments?

  Are there any recommended methods for automating configuring DotnetNuke settings? We will have several instances of our DNN application (prod, beta, qa, dev, local, etc) and need to be able to configure them all the same and be able to make updates to them all with our future releases. The settings currently needed to be configured include Host Settings, Portal Settings and User Profile Definitions. Here are some approaches I have come up with so far: 1) Create a Configuration module and use SQL scripts for all the settings? Is it generally safe to manipulate the DNN tables directly? Often it is recommended to use APIs with many frameworks. 2) Create a Configuration module and implement IUpgradeable.UpgradeModule and programatically set the settings? 3) Create a PortalTemplate from a portal with the settings all set. I believe this will only work for creating new portals. I will not be able to update existing portals.

• How do you implement caching in Linq to SQL?

  We've just started using LINQ to SQL at work for our DAL & we haven't really come up with a standard for out caching model. Previously we had being using a base 'DAL' class that implemented a cache manager property that all our DAL classes inherited from, but now we don't have that. I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a 'standard' approach to caching LINQ to SQL results? We're working in a web environment (IIS) if that makes a difference. I know this may well end up being a subjective question, but I still think the info would be valuable. EDIT: To clarify, I'm not talking about caching an individual result, I'm after more of an architecture solution, as in how do you set up caching so that all your link methods use the same caching architecture.

• Is an IQueryable a query or just an object which can be queried?

  I'm kinda confused what the IQueryable interface actually represents. The MSDN documentation for IQueryable says: "Provides functionality to evaluate queries against a specific data source." The documentation for IQueryProvider says: "Defines methods to create and execute queries that are described by an IQueryable object." The name and the documentation summary suggest that it is an object/data store which can be queried. The second quote and the fact the ObjectQuery class from the Entity Framework implements IQueryable suggest it is a query which can be executed. Did I misunderstood something or is it really kinda fuzzy?

• SMS Gateway Devices

  Can anyone recommend a good SMS Gateway device that sends and receives messages and has a reasonable API. We are looking for a hardware device that a Sim Card and works with Windows / .Net. I am working with about 50 different countries (Right now 50 will only become more in the future) and dealing with that many SMS suppliers and their various methods for billing and sending / responding to messages is proving unmanageable. It may be much easier to have a single method and call it by country. We do bulk send messages but from the logs this is at most 500 messages at a time (though it could be up-to about 1500 at a time) - mostly its small numbers far less than 500 messages. Ideally would like to get message delivery data and error handling type messages back from the device. I am not interested in a hosted solution unless it has the ability to receive a message to a local number in EVERY country.

• Socket : can an asynchronous Receive returns without reading all the bytes I asked for?

  Hi; I was reading an article on Vadym Stetsiak's blog about how to transfer variable length messages with async sockets (url: http://vadmyst.blogspot.com/2008/03/part-2-how-to-transfer-fixed-sized-data.html). He says : What to expect when multiple messages arrive at the server? While dealing with multiple messages one has to remember that receive operation can return arbitrary number of bytes being read from the net. Typically that size is from 0 to specified buffer length in the Receive or BeginReceive methods. So, even if I tell BeginReceive to read 100 bytes, it may read less than that and returns??? I am developing a network-enabled software (TCP/IP), and I always receive the same exact number of bytes I asked for. I don't even understand the logic : why would Receive completes asynchronously if it didn't get every byte I asked for ... just keep waiting. Maybe it has something to do with IP vs TCP?   Hi, anyone knows what I need to do to retain my TableView iVars whilst pushing a details view onto the navigation stack? I have an array and a date defined as iVars and the array is retained, whilst the date is not. I checked whether there may be an autorelease hidden somewhere but there are no obvious ones. The properties are defined as nonatomic, retain. I use custom NSDate category methods to determine specific dates at stages. • What does ruby include when it encounters the "include module" statement?

  If I have the following project structure project/ lib/ subproject/ a.rb b.rb lib.rb where lib.rb looks like this :- module subproject def foo do_some_stuff end end and a.rb and b.rb both need to mixin some methods within lib.rb and are both namespaced within a module like so :- require 'subproject/lib' module subproject class A include Subproject def initialize() foo() end end end What does ruby do when it encounters the include statement? How does it know that I want to only include the mixin from lib.rb rather than the whole module which includes both class A and class B, is this based purely on the require of subproject/lib or am I getting it wrong and it is including the whole of the module, including the definitions of Class A and B within themselves?

• Limit Connections with semaphores

  I'm trying to limit the number of connections my server will accept using semaphores, but when running, my code doesn't seem to make this restriction - am I using the semaphore correctly? eg. • Anyone got Twitter xAuth working with the Compact Framework yet?

  This question is related to a number of other questions on oAuth on the Compact Framework (one, two) but seems slightly more specific to me, as it specifically involves getting Twitters xAuth API call (meant for non web applications to be able to do oAuth) working on the Compact Framework. Are SSL HTTP connections and the encryption methods needed for xAuth needed part of Compact Framework 3.5? Did anyone get the Twitter xAuth working on Windows Mobile already? If so, what libraries did you use for this? Any tips are welcome.

• Can I resolve ASP.NET "~" app paths to the website root without a Control being present?

  I want to Resolve "~/whatever" from inside non-Page contexts such as Global.asax (HttpApplication), HttpModule, HttpHandler, etc. but can only find the Resolution methods specific to Controls (and Page). I think the app should have enough knowledge to be able to map this outside the Page context. No? Or at least it makes sense to me it should be resolvable in other circumstances, wherever the app root is known. Update: The reason being I'm sticking ~ paths in the web.configuration files. Update 2: I'm trying to resolve them to the website root such as Control.Resolve(..) URL does, not to a file system path.

  I am trying to learn how to write plugins using SIMBL. I got my plugin to load with the target application, and also know the method that I wish to override. However, I am not able to use class_getInstanceMethod correctly based on snippets on the Internet. Have things changed in OSX 10.6 and/or ObjC2? • calling webservice in java servlet

  I have created a servlet which displays a form having some fields and a submit button and also created a web service having methods which are needed in my servlet. I have deployed the web service on Tomcat 5.5.9/Axis and servlet web application on Tomcat ( same instance of Tomcat) using eclipse. Since one is web service and other is web application both are running on separate instances of tomcat, so when i run them separately i.e servlet without the call to web service and a client that access that webservice it works fine but when i integrate them both i get a error like exception: javax.servlet.ServletException I would like to call the web service and return the result when i press the button Please advice me on how to implement that.

(a club has many meetings and a meeting has many attendees) So far I have (declared in class Club < ActiveRecord::Base): num_attendees = meetings.select("COUNT(attendees.id) AS num").joins(:attendees).group('meetings.id') Arel::Table.new('tmp', self.class.arel_engine).from(num_attendees).project('FLOOR(AVG(num))').group('tmp.club_id').to_sql but, I am getting the error: undefined method `visit_ActiveRecord_Relation' for #<Arel::Visitors::MySQL:0x9b42180> The documentation for generating non trivial ARel queries is a bit hard to come by. I have been using http://rdoc.info/github/rails/arel/master/frames Am I approaching this incorrectly? Or am I a few methods away from a solution?

  I know REST is meant to be resource-oriented, which roughly translates to CRUD operations on these resources using standard HTTP methods. But what I just wanted to update a part of a resource? For example, let's say I have Payment resource and I wanted to mark its status as "paid". I don't want to POST the whole Payment object through HTTP (sometimes I don't even have all the data). What would be the RESTful way of doing this? I've seen that Twitter uses the following approach for updating Twitter statuses: http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/update.xml?status=playing with cURL and the Twitter API Is this approach in "the spirit" of REST?   In a website, I need to integrate membership and authentication. So I want to use the functionality of ASP.NET Membership, but I have other custom stuff, that a "user" has to do. So I am sitting here with my pencil and paper, drawing lines for my domain model... And how can I best utilize the ASP.Net membership, but extend it to fill my needs? Should I create a class that inherits from a MembershipUser and extend it with my own properties and methods (and save this in a seperate table). Or should I let the MembershipUser be a property on my custom User/Client object? What would be a good solid way to do this?
