• Correct formulation of the A* algorithm

  Hello, I'm looking at definitions of the A* path-finding algorithm, and it seems to be defined somewhat differently in different places. The difference is in the action performed when going through the successors of a node, and finding that a successor is on the closed list. One approach (suggested by Wikipedia, and this article) says: if the successor is on the closed list, just ignore it Another approach (suggested here and here, for example) says: if the successor is on the closed list, examine its cost. If it's higher than the currently computed score, remove the item from the closed list for future examination. I'm confused - which method is correct ? Intuitively, the first makes more sense to me, but I wonder about the difference in definition. Is one of the definitions wrong, or are they somehow isomorphic ?

  I am learning Objective-C and iOS programming through the terrific iTunesU course posted by Stanford (http://www.stanford.edu/class/cs193p/cgi-bin/drupal/) Assignment 2 is to create a calculator with variable buttons. The chain of commands (e.g. 3+x-y) is stored in a NSMutableArray as "anExpression", and then we sub in random values for x and y based on an NSDictionary to get a solution. This part of the assignment is tripping me up: The final two [methods] “convert” anExpression to/from a property list: + (id)propertyListForExpression:(id)anExpression; + (id)expressionForPropertyList:(id)propertyList; You’ll remember from lecture that a property list is just any combination of NSArray, NSDictionary, NSString, NSNumber, etc., so why do we even need this method since anExpression is already a property list? (Since the expressions we build are NSMutableArrays that contain only NSString and NSNumber objects, they are, indeed, already property lists.) Well, because the caller of our API has no idea that anExpression is a property list. That’s an internal implementation detail we have chosen not to expose to callers. Even so, you may think, the implementation of these two methods is easy because anExpression is already a property list so we can just return the argument right back, right? Well, yes and no. The memory management on this one is a bit tricky. We’ll leave it up to you to figure out. Give it your best shot. Obviously, I am missing something with respect to memory management because I don't see why I can't just return the passed arguments right back. Thanks in advance for any answers!

  I have a C++ project which is build via bjam. With 'install' rule in Jamroot i am able to create statically linked libraries (.lib files) for my project. My question is, how i can build a load-time DLL (or run-time DLL is also fine) with these .lib files? More Info: I am building my project with bjam in windows using msvc. When i tried compiling my project under visual C++ 2008, it complied and linked just fine but when i used bjam with msvc for compilation, it started giving linking errors and showing dependency from other project folders. Why was this behavior via bjam but not shown in vc++ UI.

• Where are the readonly/const in .NET?

  In C++ you'll see void func(const T& t) everywhere. However, i havent seen anything similar in .NET. Why? I have notice a nice amount of parameters using struct. But i see no functions with readonly/const. In fact now that i tried it i couldnt use those keywords to make a function that promises to not modify a list being passed in. Is there no way to promise the caller that this function will never modify the contents of list? Is there no way to say to call code and say this list should never be modified? (I know i can clone the list or look at documentation but i like compile errors sometime)

• Access the internal phonebook

  For more than two days now, I'm trying to grab a list of all contacts, from the internal phonebook (no facebook-, gmail- or twittercontacts) with their family- and givenname. I managed to get a list with all contacts, socialcontacts included. So I looked at the account_type and saw that on my HTC Desire they were all "com.htc.android.pcsc" and I was like "Great, I just have to filter the whole list". But then all people with non-htc android cellphones would be unable to use my app, if I would hardcode this filter. Next idea was to let the user choose which account he wants to use, but unfortunately the "com.htc.android.pcsc" didn't appear in the list I got from the AccountManager?!? So my question is: Is there any standardized way to access the internal phonebook? I'm really stuck with that and any hint is highly appreciated!

• Appending an element to a collection using LINQ

  I am trying to process some list with a functional approach in C#. The idea is that I have a collection of Tuple<T,double> and I want to change the Item 2 of some element T. The functional way to do so, as data is immutable, is to take the list, filter for all elements where the element is different from the one to change, and the append a new tuple with the new values. My problem is that I do not know how to append the element at the end. I would like to do: public List<Tuple<T,double>> Replace(List<Tuple<T,double>> collection, T term,double value) { return collection.Where(x=>!x.Item1.Equals(term)).Append(Tuple.Create(term,value)); } But there is no Append method. Is there something else?

• Default entries on a first time creation for a serialized class

  I have a class I am using for serializing various configuration options for an application I am working on. I'm adding a new property to the class that is a List, and I'd like it to fill this list if it does not exist already in a XML file. My first thought was to check if the list contained zero items, however this is not acceptable because there are times I want to have zero items in the list. In essence I want a file that has been serialized with an older version of the same class to be "upgraded" and have defaults automatically inserted for new properties. How can I do this? For a more visual example of what I'm trying to do, see below: When I deserialize an XML file that contains: <Item1>wtfe</Item1> <Item2>wtfe</Item2> and after I've added a list property it will serialze as: <Item1>wtfe</Item1> <Item2>wtfe</Item2> <Item3/> I want it to serialize as: <Item1>wtfe</Item1> <Item2>wtfe</Item2> <Item3> <DefaultSubItem/ Field="wtfe"> <DefaultSubItem/ Field="wtfe"> </Item3> But allow me to change it to: <Item1>wtfe</Item1> <Item2>wtfe</Item2> <Item3></Item3>

• Communicating between classes set up in nib, in code?

  A beginner's question: If, in your nib, you have the File's Owner linked to the ViewController class, and you also have a NSObject-derived class, how do you communicate between the ViewController class and the NSObject class within code? For instance, suppose ScientificCalculatorView.xib looks like this File's Owner (class: ScientificCalculatorViewController) FirstResponder View Calculator (an object that has been linked to the Calculator class) Obviously, I'd want Calculator to be reusable, so it could be used with a NormalCalculatorViewController or something like that. So that UI and the calculator code are separate. Does Calculator even need to be in the nib? It's a beginners question, but I'm just trying to get my head around it.

My idea for a List: final List<String> strings = new ArrayList<String>(); strings.add("HELLO"); strings.add("WORLD"); for(int i=0,l=strings.size();i<l;++i) { strings.add(strings.remove(0).toLowerCase()); } is there a better, faster way? How would this exmaple look like for a set? As there is currently no method for applying an operation to each element of a set (or list) can it be done without creating an additional temporary set? • How to iterate JPA collections in Google App engine

  Hi I use Google App Engine with datanucleus and JPA. I'm having a real hard time grasping how I'm supposed to read stuff from data store and pass it to JSP. If I load a list of POJOs with entitymanager and pass it to JSP, it crashes to org.datanucleus.exceptions.NucleusUserException: Object Manager has been closed. I understand why this is happening. Obviously because I fetch the list, close the entity manager and pass it to JSP, at which point it will fail because the list is lazy. How do I make the list NOT lazy without resorting to hacks like calling size() or something like that?   In vb.net there is a weird approach that you can use the function name as the result variable.. example: Function Foo(ByVal bar As Integer) As List(Of Integer) Foo = New List(Of Integer) Foo.Add(bar + 1) End Function As far as i know, in C# you have to: List<int> foo(int bar) { var result = new List<int>(); result.Add(bar + 1); return result; } I'm not sure if it's by design or i just don't know the right way to do this..   Hi, I have large file comprising ~100,000 lines. Each line corresponds to a cluster and each entry within each line is a reference i.d. for another file (protein structure in this case), e.g. 1hgn 1dju 3nmj 8kfn 9opu 7gfb 4bui I need to read in the file as a list of lists where each line is a sublist, thus preserving the integrity of the cluster, e.g. nested_list = [['1hgn', '1dju', '3nmj', '8kfn'], ['9opu', '7gfb'], ['4bui']] My current code creates a nested list but the entries within each list are a single string and not comma separated. Therefore, I cannot splice the list with indices so easily. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, S :-)

  I have a SPView object that contains a lot of SPListItem objects (there are many fields in the view). I am only interested in one of these fields. Let's call it specialField Given that view and specialField, I want to know if a value is contained in specialField.   The problem doesn't seemed to have anything to do with Hibernate. As I've commented the Hibernate stuff but I'm still getting it. If I comment out this line message = staffDAO.searchForStaff(search); in my controller file, it goes through ok. But I don't see anything wrong with searchForStaff function. It's a very simple function that just returns the string "test" and run system.out.println("test"). • VS 2008 linking error

  I'm using Visual Studio 2008 C++ and working on a dll project. Debug compiled and linked perfectly but when I compile the release version, it shows this: VImgPtr.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol @__security_check_cookie@4 VLibraryPtr.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "void __cdecl operator delete[](void *)" (??_V@YAXPAX@Z) D:\Source Code\VImgLib\Release-vc9u\VImgLib-vc9u.dll : fatal error LNK1120: 2 unresolved externals If I selected Multi-threaded (/MT) in "C/C++-Code Generation tab), it linked ok. The problem is only when I choose Multi-threaded DLL (/MD). I'm releasing a dll, so should be /MD right?

• How can you tell if an activity is starting or resuming?

  I have an activity which pulls some JSON from my server, and then uses it to draw a list. That list launches further activities. My problem is that I can't figure out a way to tell if the activity is still alive when you go back to it, so I end up re-querying my JSON from the server and redrawing the list every time the user goes back to the activity. How can I tell if my activity is still alive so I can skip the redraw? Using onRestart works for hitting the home key then going back, but onCreate not onRestart is called if I selected a list item then hit back.

  I am running a stored procedure that returns 2 cursors and none of them have any data. I have the following mapping xml: <resultMap id="resultMap1" class="HashMap"> <result property="firstName" columnIndex="2"/> </resultMap> <resultMap id="resultMap2" class="com.somePackage.MyBean"> <result property="unitStreetName" column="street_name"/> </resultMap> <parameterMap id="parmmap" class="map"> <parameter property="id" jdbcType="String" javaType="java.lang.String" mode="IN"/> <parameter property="Result0" jdbcType="ORACLECURSOR" javaType="java.sql.ResultSet" mode="OUT" resultMap="resultMap1"/> <parameter property="Result1" jdbcType="ORACLECURSOR" javaType="java.sql.ResultSet" mode="OUT" resultMap="resultMap2"/> </parameterMap> <procedure id="proc" parameterMap="parmmap"> { call my_sp (?,?,?) } </procedure> First result set is being put in a HashMap...second resultSet is being put in a MyBean class. code in my DAO follows: HashMap map = new HashMap() map.put("id", "1234"); getSqlMapClientTemplate().queryForList("mymap.proc", map); HashMap result1 = (HashMap)((List)parmMap.get("Result0")).get(0); MyBean myObject = (MyBean)((List)parmMap.get("Result1")).get(0);//code fails here in the last line above..my code fails. It fails because second cursor has no rows and thats why nothing is put into the list. However, first cursor returns nothing as well but since results are being put into a HashMap the list for first cursor atleast has HashMap object inside it.. Why this difference? is there a way to make iBatis put an object of MyBean inside the list even if there are no rows returned? Or should I be handling this in my DAO...I want to avoid handling it in the DAO because I have whole bunch of DAO's like these.
