  • Which is more flexible in regards to database changes, EF 4 or Linq to SQL

    - by JBeckton
Reading about both Linq to SQL and Entity Framework I have developed the impression that EF is more suitable for apps that get data from multiple data sources. But as I am reading about MVC2 models I see an example where EF is more loosely coupled with your data model. If I have to add or remove some columns from a table then what is involved in updating my model or DAL with each of these implementations?

  • Table Naming Dilemma: Singular vs. Plural Names

    - by ProfK
Convention has it that table names should be the singular of the entity that they store attributes of. I dislike any T-SQL that requires square brackets around names, but I have renamed a Users table to the singular, forever sentencing those using the table to sometimes have to use brackets. My gut feel is that it is more correct to stay with the singular, but my gut feel is also that brackets indicate undesirables like column names with spaces in them etc. Should I stay, or should I go?

  • Best Practice: Direct SQL Access vs. Web Service

    - by phsr
With respect to an application that has both a web and desktop client version: What is the best practice for the desktop client which needs access to a SQL Server? What are the benefits of connecting to the database from the application vs using a web service? Which one provides better security? What type of scope would call for one vs the other (enterprise intranet vs. web app, etc) Are there any other considerations that are necessary when choosing on platform?

  • SQL clone record with a unique index

    - by Milhous
Is there a clean way of cloning a record in SQL that has an index(auto increment). I want to clone all the fields except the index. I currently have to enumerate every field, and use that in an insert select, and I would rather not explicitly list all of the fields, as they may change over time.

  • how does sql count work?

    - by ria
I would like to understand how exactly does sql count work. Is it a whole table scan that happens or is it some property of the table that is read. However I feel a table scan would be an overhead in case of huge tables with lots of records.

  • What causes MSSQL to return the message 'The statement has been terminated'?

    - by Wally Lawless
I have a very simple INSERT statement being executed from a PHP script running on a Linux Apache web server. I can run the query fine from within SQL Management Studio and it normally runs fine from PHP as well. However, every once in awhile I get an error message from my PHP script that the query failed and the mssql_get_last_message() function returns 'The statement has been terminated'. What sources can cause this message to be returned from MSSQL?
