• Best way to sort MySql results based on two columns and show results using pagination?

  I want to sort results set first based on one column and then based on second column. I know how to do it on server side. And then I want to show these results with pagination feature. Question: would it be better to do it on client side via ajax in jQuery? I'm using Zend Framework. Would Zend_Paginator module be useful in this scenario? Basically I want to evaluate all the possible ways? Which one would be best and/or simplest option given I'm using jQuery and Zend Framework?

• It is okay to migrate to Asp.NET 4.0 now?

  Okay today, as most of you noticed Framework 4.0 has been released. I've been working on a project which is being built on framework 3.5. Since I want to use dynamic keyword and most of the asp.net features like Tableless Menu Control, ClientIDMode and clean web.config etc. I am kinda urging to migrate the unfinished project to 4.0 but I am little hesitating about that.Some times I think it is way better to wait for SP1. So what do you think about it? You guys will migrate to unfinished projects or will still hang out with 3.5 for a while. Thanks.

• Model relationships in ASP.NET MVC

  Hi I recently started evaluating ASP.NET MVC. While it is really easy and quick to create Controllers and Views for Models with only primitive properties (like shown in the starter videos from the official page) I didn't find any good way to work with references to complex types. Let's say, I have these Models: public class Customer { public int Id { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public Address Address { get; set; } public IList<Order> Orders { get; set; } } public class Address { public int Id { get; set; } public string ..... ..... } public class Order { public int Id { get; set; } public Customer Customer { get; set; } public string OrderName { get; set; } ..... } Note that I don't have foreign keys in the models (like it's typical for LINQ to SQL, which is also used in the sample video) but an object reference. How can I handle such references in asp.net mvc? Does someone has some good tips or links to tutorials about this problem? maybe including autobinding with complex types.

  I read a statement from an exercise: construct a database instance which conforms to diagram 1 but not to diagram 2. The diagrams are different n-ary relationships that have different relationships. Diagram 1 has a many to one to many to one relationship. Diagram 2 has many to many to many to one relationship. So, to really understand this problem, what does a database instance mean? Is it to make an example or abstract entities like a1, a2, or a3. Thanks for your time.

• Do you have any tips for comments code to keep them in step with the code?

  G'day, I've read both of Steve McConnell's excellent Code Complete books "Code Complete" and "Code Complete 2" and was wondering if people have any other suggestions for commenting code. My commenting mantra could be summed up by the basic idea of expressing "what the code below cannot say". While enjoying this interesting blog post by Jeff about commenting I was still left wondering "When coding, when do you feel a comment is required?" Edit: Oops. Seems to be a duplicate of this question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/121945/how-do-you-like-your-comments so sorry for the noise. Thanks to my, seemingly, SO shadow for pointing it out - wouldn't have thought I was that interesting. Now off to read the original post and see if it is relevant. Edit: I meant to emphasise the best appraoch to ensure that your comments will stay in step with the code. Maybe expressing an intent rather than the mechansim for instance.

However because he mostly uses NHibernate his example of how to implement the Query Object Pattern, or rather how to best translate the query into something useful in EF, is a bit lacking. I am looking for a good example of an implementation of the Query Object Pattern using EF4.

• Way to automate setting of MergeOptions

  I am looking for an automated way to iterate over all ObjectQueries and set the merge option to no tracking (read only context). Once i find out how to do it i will be able to generate a default read only context using a T4 template. Is this possible? For example lets say i have these tables in my object context SampleContext TableA TableB TableC I would have to go through and do the below. SampleContext sc = new SampleContext(); sc.TableA.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; sc.TableB.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; sc.TableC.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; I am trying to find a way to generalize this using object context. I want to get it down to something like foreach(var objectQuery : sc){ objectQuery.MergeOption = MergeOption.NoTracking; } Preferably I would like to do it using the baseclass(ObjectContext): ObjectContext baseClass = sc as ObjectContext var objectQueries = sc.MetadataWorkspace.GetItem("Magic Object Query Option); But i am not sure i can even get access to the queries. • Moving to .net 4 results in System.Transactions Critical: 0

  Hi I have fully working project in .net 3.5SP1, with EF 1 ORM. I tried to upgrade to .net 4. No issue while upgrading... Then i ran the project and got a NullExecptionError, with no stack trace... and no way to debug.   hi I am working on silverlight application which uses EF. I am able to retrieve the data. But I want to execute a stored procedure which returns no value. • seeing C# windows forms project code from F#

  I have a C# Windows Forms project open with some C# code in it. Question: How can I have an F# file that I can write F# code in but still referencing all the C# code I have on Form1.cs (including the GUI). I can successfully do this: - Create a C# Windows Forms project - Create a F# Library project - Reference the F# Library DLL from my C# project - That way I can call F# functions from C# But I still can't see my buttons and textboxes from F# I understand that that is because it's a library and it can't reference System.Windows.Forms So how do I fix this? I don't want it to be a library or this or that, I just want it to be a file that will allow me to write F# code while being able to reference my C# Form and code. I guess you can say I want an F# file that is also a "partial class Form1" so that I can continue writing code for the same Project, but using F# instead. How do I do that?

And what I need to provide is just the url of the spreadsheet. • ASP.NET application using old connection string.

  I am trying to publish a website using ASP.NET MVC3 EF and CODEFIRST with a SQL Server 2008 backend. On my local machine I was using a sql express db for development, but now that I am pushing live, I want to use my hosted production database. The problem is that when I try to run the application, it is still using my local db connection string. I have completely removed the old connection string from my web.config file and am using the <clear /> tag before creating the new connection string. I have also cleaned the solution and rebuilt, but somehow it is still connecting to the old db. What am I missing? This is the new connection string: <connectionStrings> <clear /> <add name="CellularAutomataDBContext" connectionString=" Server=XXX; Database=CellularAutomata; User ID=XXX; Password=XXX; Trusted_Connection=False" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings>

• Stop propagating deletes

  Is it just me or is anyone else finding EF very difficult to use in a real app :( I'm using it as the data layer and have created custom business objects. I'm having difficulty converting the business objects back to EF objects and updating/adding/deleting from the database. Does anyone know a good, simple example of doing this? Actually the current problem that's driving me nuts is when I delete something EF tries to delete other related stuff as well. For example, if I delete an invoice it will also delete the associated customer! Seems odd. I can't figure out how to stop it doing this. // tried: invoiceEfData.CustomerReference = null; // also tried invoiceEfData.Customer = null; context.DeleteObject(invoiceEfData); context.SaveChanges(); // at this point I get a database error due to it attempting to delete the customer

My model is a School can have many Persons where Persons are inherited out to teachers, students, etc. The following query works for me: IQueryable<DAL.TEACHER> teacher = from p in School select p.PERSON as ESBDAL.TEACHER; How would I write this as a query expression? I thought something like: IQueryable<DAL.TEACHER> teacher = School.Select(x=>x.PERSON) as IQueryable<DAL.TEACHER>; ...but it does not. Am I misunderstanding the .Select()?

  Reading about WPF and thinking about my application's data store at the same time led me to wonder if there are any languages or tools that allow you to define relational data in a declarative way? A shallow Google search suggests no such thing exists. Yet it seems so obviously useful. The kind of tool I have in mind would declaratively describe (at least) entities, relationships and views is a platform-agnostic way that would act as an abstraction layer between data-driven applications and their datastores. Does any such tool exist?

  Hi, I don't know how to perform this query using Linq and the EF. Imagine I have three tables A, B and C. A and B have a many-to-many relationship. B and C have a 1-to-many relationship. I want to obtain records from B including C but filtering from A's Id.   I can't seem to call this executable correctly in my psake deploy script. If I do this: exec { "$ArchiverOutputDir\NServiceBus.Host.exe /install" } It simply outputs this (and is clearly not calling the executable - just outputting the value of that expression): c:\ReloDotNet2_ServiceEndpoints\Archiver\NServiceBus.Host.exe /install But if I do this: exec { c:\ReloDotNet2_ServiceEndpoints\Archiver\NServiceBus.Host.exe /install } I get the expected output from the executable. How do I correctly call an executable with a variable in the path to the executable in psake? If this is actually a PowerShell issue, please feel free to correct the question to reflect that insight.   I'm exploring my options for modifying urls in the browser bar for bookmarking purposes. Ideally, I'd like to add querystring parameters and cannot determine if this is even possible. I don't want the page to refresh and want to add querystring values on link clicks, ajax calls, etc. If I can't add querystring parameters, then I'd like to add hash values (http:://someurl.com#hash-value). How should I go about doing this? Should I use plain JavaScript or a framework (jquery, prototype, etc.) and/or framework plugin.

  I want to get all users that have a specific role to a list of usernames. Is using .Include to include all the users, and going through the UsersReference the best way to loop through all the users that are associated with the role? I noticed I could not do a foreach(User user in role.Users) but UsersReference seem to work, but is that how it's supposed to be done?
