  • Lenovo Ideapad p500 having Windows 8 booting issues. Boot repair pastebin included!

    I recently installed Ubuntu 13.10, and thought I properly set things up to dual boot into Windows 8, but I continually get .efi errors when I attempt to boot into Windows 8. I installed Boot-Repair and used that to run the recommended fixes. It provided additional boot options within the GRUB2, but none (other than Ubuntu) are working. The error is logged on the server, but the user is able to sync, albeit slowly.   • Windows 2008 Unknown Disks

    I have a BL460c G7 blade server with OS Windows 2008 R2 SP1. This is a brand new C7000 enclosure, with FlexFabric interconnects. I got my FC switches setup and zoned properly to our Clariion CX4, and can see all the hosts that are assigned FCoE HBAs on both paths in both Navisphere and in HP Virtual Connect Manager. So I went ahead and created a storage group for a test server, assigned the appropriate host, assigned the LUN to the server. So far so good, log onto server and I can see 4 unknown disks.... No problem, I install MS MPIO, no luck, can't initialize the disks, and the multiple disks don't go away. Still no problem, I install PowerPath version 5.5 reboot. Now I see 3 disks. One is initialized and ready to go, but I still have 2 disks that I can't initialize, can't offline, can't delete. If I right click in storage manager and go to properties I can see that the MS MPIO tab, but I can't make a path active. I want to get rid of these phantom disks, but so far nothing is working and google searches are showing up some odd results, so obviously I'm not framing my question right. I thought I'd ask here real quick. Does anyone know a quick way to get rid of these unknown disks. Another question, do I need the MPIO feature installed if I have PowerPath installed? This is my first time installing Windows 2008 R2 in this fashion and I'm not sure if that feature is needed or not right now. So some more information to add to this. It seems I'm dealing with more of a Windows issue than anything else. I removed the LUN from the server, uninstalled PowerPath completely, removed the MPIO feature from the server, and rebooted twice. Now I am back to the original 4 Unknown Disks (plus the local Disk 0 containing the OS partition of course, which is working fine) I went to diskpart, I could see all 4 Unknown disks, I selected each disk, ran clean (just in case i'd somehow brought them online previously as GPT and didn't realize it) After a few minutes I was no longer able to see the disks when I ran list disk. However, the disks are still in Disk Management. When I try and offline the disks from Disk Management I get an error: Virtual Disk Manager - The system cannot find the file specified. Accompanied by an error in System Event Logs: Log Name: System Source: Virtual Disk Service Date: 6/25/2012 4:02:01 PM Event ID: 1 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: hostname.local Description: Unexpected failure. Error code: 2@02000018 Event Xml: 1 2 0 0x80000000000000 4239 System hostname.local 2@02000018 I feel sure there is a place I can go in the Registry to get rid of these, I just can't recall where and I am loathe to experiement. So to recap, there are currently no LUNS attached at all, I still have the phantom disks, and I'm getting The system cannot find the file specified from Virtual Disk Manager when I try to take them offline.   • Win 7 client print spooler service keeps stopping

    I have a Windows 7 (32 bit) client where it's print spooler keeps stoppong a few seconds after I restart it. The event log doesn't provide any clear error, "The print spooler service stopped unexpectedly...it did this x times". I can seem to find any information on this. T tried un-installing whatever print driver was there...same thing. Any other ideas?

  • Migrating SBS 2003 to 2011, and hangs when migrating Public Folders

    I've been following the migration guide at http://www.it-book.co.uk/1651/migration-from-sbs-2003-to-sbs-2011-3. The option "Migrate Exchange mailbox and settings" links me to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg563803.aspx When I get to the stage of right-clicking "Move All Replicas", it instantly hangs. I can't see anything specifically in the event viewer at the time this happens. Is this a case of waiting, or is there something more going on here?

  • NLB Accessed Denied from second server

    Hello Have NLB set up and working. Just two servers, web1 and web2. I set up NLB on web1 and can view both machines as Converged. (I had to specify a login/pass to connect to web2). On web2, looking at the NLB Manager, it only shows web2 and says in the log "Accessed Denied. Error connecting to web1". Any ideas how to fix?

  • Cannot add Silverlight Maps Control to Windows Mobile 7 application

    I know the bits just came out today, but one of the first things I want to do with the newly released Windows Mobile 7 SDK is put a map up on the screen and mess around. I've downloaded the latest version of the Silverlight Maps Control and added the references to my application. As a matter of fact, the VS 2010 design view of the MainPage.xaml shows the map control after adding the namespace and placing the control. I'm using the provided VS 2010 Express version that comes with the Win Mobile 7 SDK and have just used the New Project - Windows Phone Application template. When I try to build I get two warnings related to the Microsoft.Maps.MapControl dll's. Warning 1 The primary reference "Microsoft.Maps.MapControl, Version=1.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=498d0d22d7936b73, processorArchitecture=MSIL" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the framework assembly "System.Windows.Browser, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e" which could not be resolved in the currently targeted framework. "Silverlight,Version=v4.0,Profile=WindowsPhone".     Just recently released an application to the Windows Store, and I'm wondering if it is possible to "downgrade" it to Windows Phone 7.1 - until Windows Phone 8 will arrive. The real problem is with the async stuff, I've found the "Async Targeting Pack", but it requires Visual Studio 2012; however VS2012 doesn't work with the Phone SDK 7.0, 7.1. I'm not in the mood to install old and ugly Visual Studio 2010 on my brand new Windows 8 machine :) Does anyone know a workaround?

Given that, what is the best free WebDAV client for Windows? I think something like Filezilla, but for WebDAV, would be ideal.

  • UNC Path fails by IP "no network provider accepted the given network path", but works using hostname

    I have an unusual problem with a Windows Server 2003 (Standard x86) box. It appears the machine will not accept connections to its shares (locally and from other domain member servers) by using its ip address in a UNC path. The error returned is: "no network provider accepted the given network path" This is the case with the machine's ip address: \\10.0.8.x and even the loopback address: \\127.0.0.1 \\localhost does not work... but using the hostname (fqdn or not) works: \\server & \\server.domain.local The local windows firewall for this server is off, ping/rdp/other services respond fine using the IP address. The following services are running and have been restarted: Computer Browser Workstation Server The server itself has been rebooted too. Event 8032 in the system log indicates that: The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{29A6A925-AFB3-47E2-BA59-DDA086DEAE7A}. The backup browser is stopping. The domain controller has not been restarted, no other servers have experienced this problem, yet there are a number of browser (8021) related errors in the logs on this server. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to avoid rejoining this server to the domain if possible.

  • Connection speed drops from 1 Gbps to 10 Mbps (Vista 64)

    I recently got a Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart Server EX490) setup so I could do backups and other things. However, I am having trouble on my Vista 64 PC. The backup will be making great progress, then it will just slow down. At one point, I noticed the lights on my Netgear GS105 indicated it was not using a 1000 Mbps connection, but a 10 Mbps one. I checked the Status of Local Area Connection (Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection) and that also showed the same slow speed. This has happened several times in the last couple days. When I disabled the network device, and then enabled it, it established the 1 Gpbs connection again. However, some of the times the Sent Bytes Activity on the Status windows indicate that the data flow is still slow (100 to 1000 bytes every couple seconds). Obviously, at this rate I could backup faster to floppy disk. :) My question is how to diagnose and fix this problem. When I look at the Administrative Events, I do a Errors: Bonjour Service 456: ERROR: read_msg errno 10054 (An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.) And a Warning: e1yexpress Intel(R) 82567V-2 Gigabit Network Connection Link has been disconnected. I am suspicious there is some power saving mode. I found a post suggesting System Idle Power Saver(SIPS) may be the issue. I am going to try that, but looking for other suggestions or diagnostic advice. I have several new items in this configuration: server, client software, switch and cat6 cables.

  • How can I trigger the creation of a new CLB file?

    I'm currently having a problem with an application using COM running on Windows Vista. The application runs ok on one machine, but doesn't work on a similar configured machine. Both machines are virtual images originating from the same source image. While searching the registry for causes of this error, I came across the CLBVersion key in HKCR\CLSID which seems to have something to do with COM. The value of the key differs between the two machines (0x6 on the erroneous one, 0xc on the working one). Also there are files containing the same number in their filenames in the %SystemRoot\Registration directories of the machines. They are called R000000000006.clb and R00000000000c.clb respectively. I have already searched the windows event log for anything leading to the creation of those files (I have searched by the creation date of the files). Now a few questions regarding the registry keys and the files: Is it correct, that this is connected to COM? What is the function of the files? What causes the creation of a new "CLBVersion"? Is there a way for me to trigger the creation of a new CLB file? edit: I have now found out, that this has nothing to do with my application error. But I would still be interested in details about the registry key and the files. An installation of Visual Studio 2005 has brought the second machine to the same configuration (0xc in registry and file) as the other one.

  • administrator user unable to login, suspicious user accounts "sky$", "admin$"

    I have a Windows 2008 R2 Standard (64 bit) running in a virtual machine. Suddenly from yesterday onwards I am not able to login as administrator. Nobody changed the password. Both in the console as well as using remote desktop I am unable to login. Whenever I login as Administrator I am getting this error: "The user name or password is incorrect" Nothing has changed in the machine and I have logged in the past successfully both through console and via remote desktop several time on the same machine. One strange behaviour I noticed is, I am seeing some additional user accounts if I try to login as other user. The suspicious user account are: sky$ admin$ SUPPORT_388945a0 Is it created by some malware/virus? Or is it some windows hidden account? Microsoft site says that SUPPORT_388945a0 is: The Support_388945a0 account enables Help and Support Service interoperability with signed scripts. This account is primarily used to control access to signed scripts that are accessible from within Help and Support Services. Administrators can use this account to delegate the ability for an ordinary user, who does not have administrative access over a computer, to run signed scripts from links embedded within Help and Support Services. These scripts can be programmed to use the Support_388945a0 account credentials instead of the user’s credentials to perform specific administrative operations on the local computer that otherwise would not be supported by the ordinary user’s account. When the delegated user clicks on a link in Help and Support Services, the script executes under the security context of the Support_388945a0 account. This account has limited access to the computer and is disabled by default. However I am not sure from where this "admin$" and "sky$" came. Anyone has similar experience?

  • Can't add service account to domain group during SQL cluster install

    I'm installing a 2008 instance on a Server 2003 machine which is already running SQL 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. Much more info on this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910708 I've had problems with being able to add the windows service accounts to the groups at install time. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group? UPDATE: I'm looking for specific instructions. I have a global group called domain\servicegroup - what do I tell the security folks to do. I'd love to figure it out myself, but I don't have access to this stuff.

  • Symbolic directory link shared in domain

    We have a file server that is 2008R2 STD, it is a member server in a 2008 AD. I need to relocate some of the files and directories and would like to do it behind the scenes more or less without impacting the users. (Reason for this is that some of the files, due to recent software changes, HAVE to be located locally on one of the workstations, but they can be accessed by other applications remotely.) So symbolic links seem the panacea here, I moved a directory to another network share in the same domain (Windows 7 professional), created a symlink to it in the location it used to be in, named it the same thing, and to the local user it seems almost transparent. I.E. When logged into the desktop of the file server, I can go to the directory, open the link, it leaps to the other share as if it were local, exactly what would be expected. Then I tried it from another client computer (Windows 7 professional as well), went through the normal provisioning of R2R and L2R with fsutil... No joy. What I am getting is an access denied "Logon failure: Unknown username or bad password." using the same account that I log on locally to the file server with (Which happens to be the domain admin) So I cannot believe it is telling the truth, or... I assume it is not passing the credentials I am connecting to the first share all the way through the symlink. The end result is I want users on the domain to browser to share A, inside share A is a mixture of directories/files that reside there, and symlinks to directories/files on the second machine over the network in the same domain. Possible? Or am I misunderstanding how the symlink should work?
