• a loading screen for a c# wpf listbox

  I'm using a list box where there are on average about 500 thumbnails (items) that can be sorted and searched. Since I'm using default databinding and search descriptors (which I've heard are slow due to reflection) the list takes a noticeable pause of a few seconds loading, sorting, and searching (the list dynamically updates based on the contents of the search box so the first one or two letters typed are really slow). I don't think I can fully do away with reflection give the timeframe for the project, and speed isn't super essential, but I'd like some kind of graphical indication of the delay so it doesn't confuse the user. How could I do something like a website video loading screen where the listbox grays out and some kind of loading circle indicates it's processing until the list is ready? Or even just grayed out with the words "Loading..." for a few seconds could work. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions!!!

• Computer Vision application(+web interface) for face detection and recognition from database

  My project is a computer vision java application which should implement the following : A web interface through which the form entry+images(for example a student data) will be stored into a database(Mysql) & images into directory common to my java application. Then the data & images can be retrieved from my java Gui application and I can perform the following operations of image processing through OpenCV. Actually,I want to run the face detection on images retrieved and discard the false entries(no proper face). Also the application user/admin can search an image based on text search(By Id) or By another reference image using face recognition. I am well familiar with Java but the problem is that I need a guidance on how to organise it in a stepwise manner(links appreciated).OpenCv,Php and mySql are really messy.I know doing the openCV stuff within java is real overhead but i really want to do it.But If there is any suggestion to do it elseway please guide me.So any kind of help is a ray of hope for me.   I posted a question a couple of days ago (SQL Reporting Services Daylight saving time query) which was I received an answer for (thanks very much) but did not elaborate on the whole problem I am experiencing. Not only did I require the returned date time format to account for day light saving but I also need the search parameter @StartDate to allow for DST. Currently if I key in a scheduled start time of 31/03/2010 11:00 and because the SQL DB has already taken the hours difference into consideration I get no results back. If I key in 31/03/2010 10:00 then the correct details are returned. Is there away using T-SQL or the like to get the search parameter to pass the adjusted time to the DB?

I want to be able to capture the Phone Number (Web Browser, Word and Outlook for starts) and change it to present a link that the user can click to search that Phone Number in the CRM Application, given him the ability to open that client profile or make a call (we have a PBX Dial software). • LIKE operator with $variable

  This is my first question here and I hope it is simple enough to get a quick answer! Basically, I have the following code: $variable = curPageURL(); $query = 'SELECT * FROM `tablename` WHERE `columnname` LIKE '$variable' ; If I echo the $variable, it prints the current page's url( which is a javascript on my page) Ultimately, what I want, is to be able to make a search for which the search-term is the current page's url, with wildcards before and after. I am not sure if this is possible at all, or if I simply have a syntax error, because I get no errors, simply no result! I tried : $query = 'SELECT * FROM `tablename` WHERE `columnname` LIKE '"echo $variable" ' ; But again, I'm probably missing or using a misplaced ' " ; etc. Please tell me what I'm doing wrong!

  I'm trying to parameterise a search query that uses the LIKE keyword with a wildcard. The original sql has dynamic sql like this: "AND JOB_POSTCODE LIKE '" + isPostCode + "%' " So I've tried this instead, but I get a FormatException: "AND JOB_POSTCODE LIKE @postcode + '%' " Edit: I guess the FormatException isn't going to be coming from Sql Server CE, so as requested, here is how I set the parameter in my C# code. The parameter is set in code like this: command.Parameters.Add("@postcode", SqlDbType.NVarChar).Value = isPostCode; I also tried: "AND JOB_POSTCODE LIKE @postcode" with command.Parameters.Add("@postcode", SqlDbType.NVarChar).Value = isPostCode + "%"; but that doesn't return any results. Can anyone advise how to use parameters in this search sql?

• How to find two most distant points?

  This is a question that I was asked on a job interview some time ago. And I still can't figure out sensible answer. Question is: you are given set of points (x,y). Find 2 most distant points. Distant from each other. For example, for points: (0,0), (1,1), (-8, 5) - the most distant are: (1,1) and (-8,5) because the distance between them is larger from both (0,0)-(1,1) and (0,0)-(-8,5). The obvious approach is to calculate all distances between all points, and find maximum. The problem is that it is O(n^2), which makes it prohibitively expensive for large datasets. There is approach with first tracking points that are on the boundary, and then calculating distances for them, on the premise that there will be less points on boundary than "inside", but it's still expensive, and will fail in worst case scenario. Tried to search the web, but didn't find any sensible answer - although this might be simply my lack of search skills.

• Math questions at a programmer interview?

  So I went to an interview at Samsung here in Dallas, Texas. The way the recruiter described the job, he didn't make it sound like it was too math-oriented. The job basically involved graphics programming and C++. Yes, math is implied in graphics programming, especially shaders, but I still wasn't expecting this... The whole interview lasted about an hour and a half and they asked me nothing but math-related questions. They didn't ask me a single programming question, which I found odd. About all they did was ask me how to write certain math routines as a C++ function, but that's about it. What about programming philosophy questions? Design patterns? Code-correctness? Constness? Exception safety? Thread safety? There are a zillion topics that they could have covered. But they didn't. The main concern I have is that they didn't ask any programming questions. This basically implies to me that any programmer who is good at math can get a job here, but they might put out terrible code. Of course, I think I bombed the interview because I haven't used any sort of linear algebra in about a year and I forget math easily if I haven't used it in practice for a while. Are any of my other fellow programmers out there this way? I'm a game programmer too, so this seems especially odd. The more I learn, the more old knowledge that gets "popped" out of my "stack" (memory). My question is: Does this interview seem suspicious? Is this a typical interview that large corporations have? During the interview they told me that Google's interview process is similar. They have multiple, consecutive interviews where the math problems get more advanced.

For qmake and cmake i specify in hard the path of the Psapi.lib. qmake : win32 { LIBS += "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Lib\Psapi.Lib" } cmake : SET(PSAPI "C:/Program Files/Microsoft SDKs/Windows/v7.0A/Lib/Psapi.Lib") But i want to avoid the hard path, is there is any way to search the SDK lib ? • Java, searching through folders to match a name

  Hi folks, I using java to search for a file or folder that matches a specific case. For instance i want to search through all the files and folders and iterate through them as many times as necessary untill i find a result. The catch I searching for files and folders through a binary image of a file system. This means i doubt there are any preexisting classes such java.file.* to do it for me. If it helps i can tell you that i can tell the difference between files and folders easily enough. (a folder is flagged as 0x20) The only way i can think of is to do a standard loop and iterated several times but this limits me if a file or folder is several folders deep. All input greatly welcome

  Hello, I would like to achive the same functinoanlity in the UUTextField control as Google search web site (which uses Ajax for this): as user start typing, list of suggestion searches is shown. Then more letteres you type, suggestion list changes. So imaging I have array of words: Apple Abc Aman As user types A, all thress suggesions are shown, if user type one more letter p, then Apple is suggested. How would I do something like this? Mail type of applicatins do it, when receipent name is typed in the To: edit control I guess I can use UITableView with the search, is it correct approach?

  Hi Guys, Basically I'm developing a (very) simple search engine. You can enter a search term and you are taken to the results page - which works fine. However on the results page, I have a button that will take you to the next 10 results: where $term is the $_POST['term'] value. echo "<input type='hidden' name='term' value='" . $term . "'>"; This causes the following problem with the term is for example "aidan's". When the next 10 button is clicked, the term becomes aidan\ and no further results are found. I am not doing anything to $term. I usually use Java, but am required to use PHP for this uni assignment! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So definitely there is a good reason for it. What scenarios would parameterized statements cover but our method doesn't? What are the advantages of parameterized statements compared to our method? • Coarse Collision Detection in highly dynamic environment

  I'm currently working a 3D space game with A LOT of dynamic objects that are all moving (there is pretty much no static environment). I have the collision detection and resolution working just fine, but I am now trying to optimize the collision detection (which is currently O(N^2) -- linear search). I thought about multiple options, a bounding volume hierarchy, a Binary Spatial Partitioning tree, an Octree or a Grid. I however need some help with deciding what's best for my situation. A grid seems unfeasible simply due to the space requirements and cache coherence problems. Since everything is so dynamic however, it seems to be that trees aren't ideal either, since they would have to be completely rebuilt every frame. I must admit I never implemented a physics engine that required spatial partitioning, do I indeed need to rebuild the tree every frame (assuming that everything is constantly moving) or can I update the trees after integrating? Advice is much appreciated - to give some more background: You're flying a space ship in an asteroid field, and there are lots and lots of asteroids and some enemy ships, all of which shoot bullets. EDIT: I came across the "Sweep an Prune" algorithm, which seems like the right thing for my purposes. It appears like the right mixture of fast building of the data structures involved and detailed enough partitioning.   I have been assigned a task that I should change our solr search to sort a list returned by solr by using the term frequency. Well, I´ve found a way to do so simply by using omitNorms="true". The problem is, that this won´t work when I am doing a field - search, say by name: q=name:jones Following this example I get a list of document whose term frequency is the highest for the "name" field. But What I wanted to achieve is to have a query that is giving my a list of documents whose term frequency is the highest for ALL fields. Example: If a User named Jones also has the word "Jones" in his biography 10 times I want that document ranked higher. Is that possible ?
