    I have a drop down menu in an ASPX page along the lines of: <form> <select name="cars"> <option value="volvo">Volvo</option> <option value="saab">Saab</option> <option value="fiat" selected="selected">Fiat</option> <option value="audi">Audi</option> </select> </form> That is dynamically generated from another controller (value and label). After the user selects one of the options I need to find out what the selected value/label (will be the same) is so I can hit an update button and retrieve the data on that option. What would be the easiest way to find out the value of the user "selected" option?

    We are writing an ASP.NET MVC application. By default, if the client browser has Javascript, the handler for every form on the page is set, by Javascript, to be one that sends the submission down an Ajax "pipe" (progressive enhancement). But, for one form (on a page of several), I'd like this handler to be bypassed/ignored. Is there a simple way to do this? Perhaps by overriding the handler by specifying my own onsubmit event directly in the DOM - or some other method? We use jQuery, so those libraries are available to me.

    Is there a way to use jQuery (or generic javascript) to disable CSS inheritance on a block level? For example, if I am pulling in an external resource via javascript, say pastie.org, they will have their own CSS that my CSS overrides. I would like to place the embed code into its own container that has CSS inheritance disabled. This is not my own CSS structure, so I can't rename IDs Classes or inline anything to make it work, the holy grail of inheritance blocking is my last resort.

    I've written a chrome extension to find text on a page based on a regex query. When text is matched, I wrap the matched text in a <span> tag that has the class highlight where highlight only changes the background color to yellow. The issue is that sometimes there are already styles applied to <span> tags in a webpage. For example, the webpage might have this defined: span { font-size: 200%; } So when I insert my <span> tag in another <span> tag, the font-size is actually 400%. Is there an easy way for my code to just change certain properties of the text, like the background color, without applying the webpage's styles twice?

    When defining colors using "shorthand hexidecimal" (style="color: #FFF;"), is there a defined method for expanding the shorthand? (style="color: #F0F0F0;" or style="color: #FFFFFF;") Do all browsers use the same expansion method? Is this behavior by specification (if so, where is it defined)? Does the expansion method perhaps vary between CSS 1/2/3? I've observed that "most browsers" expand to #FFFFFF. Are there any other places where this shorthand notation is allowed, but the expansion method is different? I've always avoided using shorthand hex, because I've never known the answers to these questions...

    I have created a custom PhpBB3 style and desperately since a few hours tried to add a background image to a specific comment text area. With firebug I checked if the comment text area had a class and it does, so I tried some css variations and finally tried: sn-inputComment { background: url("{T_THEME_PATH}/images/pencil.png") repeat-x left top #FFFFFF;} { I also tried to find and manipulate the php generated text area but no success. Non of my methods worked. I will provide you all with a tinylink url to my forum with a test user and password access.     Hey guys, the scenario is this: see select below <form name="limit"> <select name="limiter" onChange="limit(this.value)"> <option selected="selected">&nbsp;</option> <option value="5">5</option> <option value="10">10</option> <option value="15">15</option> </select> </form> I want whenever any option is selected for 3 things to happen: 1.) js limit() function is called which all it does its takes current url, adds new query parameter 'limit' with the user selected value eg: http://localhost/blahblah/apps/category.php?pg=1&catId=3021&limit=5 (this will cause the category.php page to be hit and # of product displayed limited to the value selected by user) 2.)Once the url is hit, it reloads but i DONT want the value selected to reset back to the default (which it currently does). I want it to reflect the users selection after page reload. 3.) Also, when i move to the next page (pagination), i would like the state to be carried ova to the next page (ie. remembering the user selection).

    Hi, I'm building a PHP intranet for my boss. A simple customer, order, quote system. It will be denied access from the Internet and only used by 3 people. I'm not so concerned with security as I am with validation. Javascript is disables on all machines. The problem I have is this: Employee enters valid data into a form containing any of the following :;[]"' etc. Form $_POSTS this data to a validationAndProcessing.php page, and determines whether the employee entered data or not in to the fields. If they didn't they are redirected back to the data input page and the field they missed out is highlighted in red. htmlspecialchars() is applied to all data being re-populated to the form from what they entered earlier. Form is then resubmitted to validationAndProcessing.php page, if successful data is entered into the database and employee is taken to display data page. My question is this: If an employee repeatedly enters no data in step 1, they will keep moving between step 1 and 4 each time having htmlspecialchars() applied to the data. So that:- & becomes:- &amp; becomes:- &amp;amp; becomes:- &amp;amp;amp; etc.. How can I stop htmlspecialchars() being applied multiple times to data that is already cleaned? Thanks, Adam

    Most websites tend to have either a solid color as background, or a small image that is repeated. Why aren't more websites using a large image (such as a photo) as background? I can think of the following reasons: 1) Problems with different screen resolutions. Too small and gaps start to appear on the left and/or right side for higher resolutions, too big and lower resolutions only show part of the image. 2) Bandwidth. Although this is unlikely to be a problem for most websites. Are there any other reasons why such backgrounds are not being used more often?

  • Styling a list as tabs with a background overflowing into content

    I couldn't think of any better way to name this question, but I'll explain. I have a mediawiki website with a background pattern (like parchment) behind the articles. At the top of each article I want to have tabs like wikipedia does (with page | talk | edit etc links). The problem is, the tabs should seamlessly fit with the article's background and I can't figure out if this is actually possible. The way I was trying to do it was positioning the list inside the actual content div and give the <li items a transparent background, but as far as I can see there's no way to color the rest of the <ul's background black without affecting the <li's in there.     We have an Intranet website, and a WPF windows executable installed on every workstation. How can we create a hyperlink on the intranet website that will launch the locally installed executable? Ideally we want the launch to be seamless. Is there a way of setting the browsers trust settings so that it won't display a security warning dialog for this executable? We have full admin capabilities on each workstation, and each user only uses Internet Explorer. We also know the correct local path for the exe.
