  • What do encrypted files' data look like?

    I know there are a lot of encryption programs available, that I would guess use different methods for encryption, and thus have different types of output files (.fve .tc .cha .dmg (bitlocker, truecrypt, challenger, ect.)), but if someone didn't know what the file was and just looked at the data, what would it look like? Does it just look like random bits, or can you still pick out a pattern? If it does look random, how is it if I moved the encrypted file to another computer, the other computer can tell it's a file, and is able to decrypt it (how would it even know where to start or stop, if it all looked random)? Also, how is the structure affected by encrypting files twice, using the same method, or a different one? Thanks for any help, and if you know any books or site about encryption for complete idiots, I'd appreciate it!

BUT if I stay in the editor for a longer time, say 2 minutes, and posting I end up at the editor again with the old content. All my previous work is lost.     In its description of valid tcpdump expressions, the pcap-filter man pages state: The filter expression consists of one or more primitives. Primitives usually consist of an id (name or number) preceded by one or more qualifiers. In turn, these qualifiers are type, dir and proto. So far so good, but further down we find this: ip host host which is equivalent to: ether proto \ip and host host In the first case, ip and host are, respectively, proto and type. What pattern does ether proto \ip follow? Isn't that, as a whole, a proto qualifier? If so, why isn't (a properly escaped) 'ether proto \ip host host' legal (no and)?

  • Tab Completion In Emacs shell-mode SSH Sessions

    My current use pattern of emacs results in my having several shell-mode buffers open, each running an ssh session. I am running into an issue with this, though - when I try to tab-complete file names and other things in my remote session, the shell attempts to use completions available on the local machine instead of on the remote machine. For example, if the file ~/foobar exists on the local machine and ~/frob exists on the remote machine, typing in ~/f and pressing tab results in ~/foobar instead of completing correctly. If I use ssh outside of emacs and try the same thing, I get the correct completion of ~/frob instead. How can I get tab-completion to complete the way it does in normal ssh sessions ?

    I've got a Python module which is distributed on PyPI, and therefore installable using easy_install. It depends on lxml, which in turn depends on libxslt1-dev. I'm unable to install libxslt1-dev with easy_install, so it doesn't work to put it in install_requires. Is there any way I can get setuptools to install it instead of resorting to apt-get?

    I am curious about the IDs that are used to identify items in winqual. I assume it is some sort of hash. Is this published? Hash of the module name, its version and an offset? That seems appropriate but the size is too small to cover the possibilities unless some truncation/lossy algorithm is used. This seems to be generated with the minidump on the client machine.

    I have two classes; let's call them Ogre and Wizard. (All fields are public to make the example easier to type in.) public class Ogre { int weight; int height; int axeLength; } public class Wizard { int age; int IQ; int height; } In each class I can create a method called, say, battle() that will determine who will win if an Ogre meets and Ogre or a Wizard meets a Wizard. Here's an example. If an Ogre meets an Ogre, the heavier one wins. But if the weight is the same, the one with the longer axe wins. public Ogre battle(Ogre o) { if (this.height > o.height) return this; else if (this.height < o.height) return o; else if (this.axeLength > o.axeLength) return this; else if (this.axeLength < o.axeLength) return o; else return this; // default case } We can make a similar method for Wizards. But what if a Wizard meets an Ogre? We could of course make a method for that, comparing, say, just the heights. public Wizard battle(Ogre o) { if (this.height > o.height) return this; else if (this.height < o.height) return o; else return this; } And we'd make a similar one for Ogres that meet Wizard. But things get out of hand if we have to add more character types to the program. This is where I get stuck. One obvious solution is to create a Character class with the common traits. Ogre and Wizard inherit from the Character and extend it to include the other traits that define each one. public class Character { int height; public Character battle(Character c) { if (this.height > c.height) return this; else if (this.height < c.height) return c; else return this; } } Is there a better way to organize the classes? I've looked at the strategy pattern and the mediator pattern, but I'm not sure how either of them (if any) could help here. My goal is to reach some kind of common battle method, so that if an Ogre meets an Ogre it uses the Ogre-vs-Ogre battle, but if an Ogre meets a Wizard, it uses a more generic one. Further, what if the characters that meet share no common traits? How can we decide who wins a battle?

  • log-back and thirdparty writing to stdout. How to stop them getting interleaved.

    First some background. I have a batch-type java process run from a DOS batch script. All the java logging goes to stdout, and the batch script redirects the stdout to a file. (This is good for me because I can ECHO from the script and it gets into the log file, so I can see all the java JVM command line args, which is great for debugging.) I may not I use slf4j API, and for the backend I used to use log4j, but recently switched to logback-classic. Although all my application code uses slf4j, I have a third party library that does it's own logging (not using a standard API) which also gets written to stdout. The problem is that sometimes log lines get mixed up and don't cleanly appear on separate lines. So logback must be doing something different. The problem seems to be that although PrintStream.write(byte buf[], int off, int len) is synchronized, however I can see in ch.qos.logback.core.joran.spi.ConsoleTarget that System.out.write(int b) is the only write method called. So inbetween logback outputting each byte, the thirdparty library is managing to write a whole string to the stdout. (Not only is this cause me a problem, but it must also be a little inefficient?) Is there any other fix to this interleaving problem than patching the code to ConsoleTarget so it implments the other write methods? Any nice work arounds. Or should I just file a bug report?   • PyLint "Unable to import" error - how to set PYTHONPATH?

    I'm running PyLint from inside Wing IDE on Windows. I have a sub-directory (package) in my project and inside the package I import a module from the top level, ie. __init__.py myapp.py one.py subdir\ __init__.py two.py Inside two.py I have import one and this works fine at runtime, because the top-level directory (from which myapp.py is run) is in the Python path. However, when I run PyLint on two.py it gives me an error: F0401: Unable to import 'one' How do I fix this?

  • Ubuntu server hangs on reboot "could not stat resume device file"

    Instead of booting into the running system this machine stops and on the terminal I can see a message: could not stat resume device file /dev/sdb5 When I attach a keyboard and press enter the boot continues and the machine comes up like normal. But it's essential that this machine comes up under most circumstancs alone. There never was something like a "resume" on this machine. I tried several times to reboot, but this does not happen on all boots, I can not find a pattern here. There is a software raid running on the box.
