  • Port-forwarding HTTPS web server

    I have port forwarded our front-facing IP to an internal HTTPS server. The browser does not connect. A wget command determines that the certificate is self-signed for the internal IP. Hence why the browser is refusing to display the page properly. What is the best-practice scenario for this sort of stuff? Thanks

  • Terminal window opens when Xubuntu starts...?

    Whenever I start up my laptop with Xubuntu on it, a Terminal window opens and just sits in the taskbar - as though I opened it myself. Anyone know if there's some sort of list of applications which open at boot time. Maybe Terminal got on that list somehow?

  • How do I properly dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 on an UEFI system?

    I have an HP Z210 with Windows 7, which is UEFI based. I'd like to dual boot it to Ubuntu 11.10 with GRUB2, but am having problems due to the UEFI. The install CD goes to the end, but then the machine always boots right into Windows. These problems are apparently documented (here and here), but there's no consensus as to what the simplest solution is. Any recommendations? I want Ubuntu and Windows to both be bootable. (Perhaps if I knew more about UEFI and its system partition, and how it differs from BIOS and MBR, I'd be in a better position. So background answers explaining how UEFI loads up are very appreciated.)

  • Advanced Chrome/ Chromium won't set as the default browser

    I've downloaded Advanced Chrome (http://browser.taokaizen.com/) and am now using it instead of Chrome. Each time I open the browser, it keeps asking me if I would like to set it as the default browser, which I do. When the browser is reopened, it asks me again. I've looked at Settings and tried to click the 'make Chromium my default browser' button, but it doesn't appear to register my wish to make it the default browser - nothing happens! Any ideas?

  • Examples of applications where messages are guaranteed to turn up imediately

    I'm trying to find an example to show where data is sent from somewhere, whether manually or automatically, and is received IMMEDIATELY by the recipient, (doesn't matter whether we're talking mobile, desktop or whatever). An even better example would be where there were multiple recipients for the same message. It doesn't matter what the data is or the context it's used in, only the immediacy of receiving it. I was thinking that there might be some example in finance and the stock markets, but I haven't been able to find any through googling. IM clients are a great example of this and I think I'm basically looking for examples of applications that communicate over sockets. If anyone works on applications of this nature or knows of particular implementations, can you give me a quick run down of the use case and if it's commercial software the name of the software. This is all basically for research purposes so doesn't have to be particularly detailed. If anyone can help, thanks.

  • Dell V105 printer and OS X 10.6

    I am trying to get a Dell V105 printer to work with my iMac. It is running 10.6 and I have installed all the drivers on the Snow Leopard disk. I believe there is no official Dell driver but I have also heard the Dell printers are made by third parties that may sell the same printer under different names. There a quite a few Lexmark models that seem to look very similar and I have tried setting the driver to the 2600 series that looks very similar but that has not enabled me to print. Although it claims to give me the supply levels correctly. Can anyone help? Thanks for your time

  • Home Network Stopped Working

    I have a home network where a machine running Windows 7 Ultimate N acts as a central hub for other devices to access media. This has been running for around 2 years now and there has been no recent configuration changes. The machine has a static IP address (192.168.0.3), which also has not been changed. A few laptops, Sonos music system and mobiles are using the machine for music/video mostly. Additionally, post 3389 was also open for RDP. I used a no-ip agent to map a hostname so I could RDP to the machine from the internet. As of yesterday when I try to ping the machine, I get PING:Transmit Failed, General Error I noticed however, the IP it is pinging is 0.0.2.233. All shares etc are no longer functioning including RDP. On the machine itself, an IP config shows like nothing has changed. It still shows the expected IP. If I ping itself from its hostname, I get the same error as above. machine has been rebooted, the router has been also. Any ideas where to even start on this?

  • Configuring IIS site to use HTTPS

    I am working on a REST API which I have currently deployed on a Win XP Professional SP2 development machine running IIS 5.1. The site is currently being hosted on port 81 and being accessed via HTTP. I would now like to configure the site to stop using HTTP and use HTTPS only. I have developed a self-signed certificate using the SelfSSL.exe tool from the 6.0 Resource Kit Tools and set the Common Name to be the IP of my server (as it's a local development machine it has no domain name). I have also already configured the site to use SSL using the How To Set Up an HTTPS Service in IIS tutorial as my guide. However, whenever I try to access a resource in the API via HTTPS I get a 404. Any ideas?

    I'm trying to find an example to show where data is sent from a server and is pushed to a/multiple clients which are updated immediately, i.e. the client doesn't make requests for updates. It doesn't matter whether we're talking mobile, desktop or whatever. An even better example would be where there were multiple recipients for the same message. It doesn't matter what the data is or the context it's used in, only the immediacy of receiving it.   • Windows XP - non-user input data filter message after installing wireless keyboard & mouse

    After I installed MS wireless keyboard and mouse and associated software, I started getting this annoying message titled "Hardware installation" telling me the software I am trying to install did not pass the XP logo tests. The software is for "HID non-user input data filter" and I have two options Continue anyway or stop installation. Now, if I try to continue the installation fails, if stop installing another message pops up with a little mouse logo and the whole process repeats itself. after I am done with that message a third dialog appears. This is happening every time I boot up my PC (a desktop), I tried following an advice I found in some forum and download windows update for ID non-user input data filter, but that installation failed as well. The thing is, that both keyboard and mouse are working fine Is there anyway to get past these dialogs ?

  • Recommended Practices for Managing httpd.conf for different environments

    We have several different environments (developer dekstop, integration, QA, prod) which should have slightly different variants of the same httpd.conf file. As an example, the httpd.conf file configures that httpd should act as a reverse proxy and proxy certain URLs to Jetty, but the hostname of the Jetty instance is different in each environment. Is there a recommended practice for mangaging these kinds of differences? I looked around the apache documentation for the httpd.conf file and I didn't see anything that does what I need.

  • Dlink search is hijacking my browser

    For months now "DLink search" has been hijacking my search engines. I use google chrome, and I have organized my search engines in the handy dandy "manage search engines" tool about a TRILLION times. It never even says D-link is hacking my search engines. It does not show up! I have read many posts on this forum and others saying that to fix this problem from internet explorer: Setup, internet options, yadayada, magical fairies, and you are solved, but my browser is google chrome! How am I supposed to do this from there! I do not know how to re-setup my Dlink router, which is the cause of the problem! HOW? In those posts with the magical fairies fixing it, HUNDREDS responded saying, "yep, those fairies definitely fixed it right. :)" These people were so satisfied. IT WORKED FOR THEM, WHY NOT ME. I look at it and go ":(" because it does not help me. There are no options for anything to do with this in GOOGLE chrome. PLEASE EXPLAIN and HELP. I see no "SETUP" option, no "Internet Options" button, no anything. BTW the exact posts are these: "Uncheck Advanced DNS in the router internet setup. This will take care of it. I had this problem with my DLink router before." "I had this issue with my DIR-655 and unchecking the Advanced DNS setting in Setup - Internet - Manual Internet Connection Setup fixed it." "If this is just internet explorer, you can go to Tools Internet Options or Internet Options in Control Panel. From here, go to the advanced tab and click the Reset button." "I would set the router's DNS to a site like OpenDNS, and I would ensure the machines are set to get their DNS settings via DHCP or set the machine's DNS setting to OpenDNS. If the router's DNS looks like it was messed with, some bad software know the default passwords for routers and could have changed it. If you don't already I would make sure the password to the router is not default or easy to guess. I've had spyware change a machine's DNS, but the fact it is happening on all machines makes me wonder if it is the router." "Something got into your router and changed the dns server most likely, do a hard reset of the router and then change the password to something strong. Also check for a firmware update for the router and apply it as soon as possible."

  • Mac OSX DHCP Stopped Working [on hold]

    Tethering a Raspberry PI to a MacBook (Mavericks) via ethernet is proving to be a real pain. This worked for about a day. My MacBook required a rare reboot and once it came back up the Pi won't get an address. I've confirmed it's not a problem with the Pi. It's a problem with the MacBook for sure. It's basically just stopped giving out IPs. I've read as much as I've found about how to fix this friggin' problem, but I've thus far come up blank. Internet sharing Wi-fi Ethernet enabled, and/or Edited /etc/bootpd.plist as described here (http://www.jacquesf.com/2011/04/mac-os-x-dhcp-server/ - this worked initially and now no longer does) Pi connected directly to the router has no problems. My MacBook DHCP server will no longer give out addresses. Any help would be much appreciated.

  • force connection using USB adapter

    Hi all I am new to Linux, so even though this is probably a simple problem it remains unsolved after more then 3 hours of googling :-( I run running ubuntu 10.04 LTS on an Acer Aspire 5520G . the laptop has a wireless adapter, but since I wanted better range I got an Edimax EW-7711USN USB adapter. now , when running ifconfig I am able to see both adapters where as the laptop native adapter is listed as wlan0 and the usb adapter is listed as wlan1. but listing available networks from the wireless network applet , all the connection are listed under wlan0 , the usb adapter is costencly listed as disconnected. this is what I have been trying to do so far 1) ifconfig wlan0 down - I got disconnected from the net but still was not able to get the usb to connect 2) used the wireless connection dialog to connect to a hidden network with the usb adapter - I was able to connect to the network but with no Internet access 3) disable wireless using the laptop function button - both wireless adapters where disabled can anyone suggest a way to connect to to the wireless network using the USB adapter rather then the built in one ?     The NTPv3 RFC describes five operating modes: Symmetric Active (1): A host operating in this mode sends periodic messages regardless of the reachability state or stratum of its peer. By operating in this mode the host announces its willingness to synchronize and be synchronized by the peer. Symmetric Passive (2): This type of association is ordinarily created upon arrival of a message from a peer operating in the symmetric active mode and persists only as long as the peer is reachable and operating at a stratum level less than or equal to the host; otherwise, the association is dissolved. However, the association will always persist until at least one message has been sent in reply. By operating in this mode the host announces its willingness to synchronize and be synchronized by the peer. Client (3): A host operating in this mode sends periodic messages regardless of the reachability state or stratum of its peer. By operating in this mode the host, usually a LAN workstation, announces its willingness to be synchronized by, but not to synchronize the peer. Server (4): This type of association is ordinarily created upon arrival of a client request message and exists only in order to reply to that request, after which the association is dissolved. By operating in this mode the host, usually a LAN time server, announces its willingness to synchronize, but not to be synchronized by the peer. Broadcast (5): A host operating in this mode sends periodic messages regardless of the reachability state or stratum of the peers. By operating in this mode the host, usually a LAN time server operating on a high-speed broadcast medium, announces its willingness to synchronize all of the peers, but not to be synchronized by any of them. It seems to me, though, that any host except a leaf node would probably be in several modes. For example, I might have a local area network with three NTP servers, each in Symmetric Active (1) mode with respect to one another. They would also each be clients (3) of one of the many public stratum two time servers. Lastly, they would all server as servers (4) to the many local clients. Is the point that they're only in a given mode for a moment during the synchronization? If so, how does a host know to switch? I'm only looking for enough depth here to discuss the issue in an educated manner, not to write a custom time server.

  • Compaq Presario V2000 Vista/7 trial virtualization

    I am currently studying for an A-Plus certification to which was recently added troubleshooting Windows 7 to the exam. You also have to be very familiar with Vista as well. I only have XP on my Compaq Presario V2000, but I wanted to set it up ( I believe I have the minimum requirements for both ) so that I could run trial versions of Vista and 7 virtually.Windows 2000 is also on the exam. Is there an easy legal way to do this? I wouldn't mind partitioning my HDD for the four operating systems either. Thnx if you have any ideas, JLS

  • Choosing parts for a high-spec custom PC - feedback required [closed]

    I'm looking to build a high-spec PC costing under ~£800 (bearing in mind I can get the CPU half price). This is my first time doing this so I have plenty of questions! I have been doing lots of research and this is what I have come up with: http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/p/j4lE Usage: I will be using it for Adobe CS6, rendering in 3DS Max, particle simulations in Realflow and for playing games like GTA IV (and V when it comes out), Crysis 1/2, Saints Row The Third, Deus Ex HR, etc. Questions: Can you see any obvious problem areas with the current setup? Will it be sufficient for the above usage? I won't be doing any overclocking initially. Is it worth buying the H60 liquid cooler, or will the fan that comes with the CPU be sufficient? Is water cooling generally quieter? Is the chosen motherboard good for the current components? And is it future-proof? I read that the HDD is often the bottleneck when it comes to gaming. I presume this is true to other high-end applications? If so, is my selection good? I keep changing my mind about the GPU; first the 560, now the 660. Can anyone shed some light on how to choose? I read mixed opinions about matching the GPU to the CPU. Will the 560 or the 660 be sufficient for my required usage? Atm I'm basing my choice on the PassMark benchmarks and how much they cost. The specs on the GeForce website state that the 560 and the 660 both require 450W. Is this a good figure to base the wattage of my PSU on? If so, how do you decide? Do I really need 750W? The latest GTX 690 requires 650W. Is it a good idea to buy a 750W PSU now to future-proof myself?

  • Windows Services don't automatically start after reboot?

    We've got some Windows services written in .NET. They start fine manually within the services mmc, but despite being set to Automatic, they never start when powering on (or rebooting) the machine. Update In the event log, instead of seeing "xyz started", alongside all the other services starting, I just see "The xyz service entered the stopped state." and a seperate error that says "A timeout (30000 milliseconds) was reached while waiting for a transaction response from the slsvc service.". If I manually start them, then I get a normal in the event log as expected, and all is fine - until the next Windows Update patch which forces a reboot and all the services are off again. Any ideas? I've tried setting them to Delayed Start with no apparent difference.

  • How to handle OpenVPN client as a service, when the laptop is physically on the network already?

    The Setup I've gotten OpenVPN working on our Windows XP laptops. Users are limited, so I went ahead and set OpenVPN client to run as a service, which is great anyway because that means they are on the VPN before logging in, so login scripts work, plus we can do remote support even if the user can not log in (such as connecting via VNC or resetting passwords). It is also configured to send all traffic over the tunnel, so when, for example, they browse the internet it is just like browsing from our corporate network. The Qestion(s) So, I'm wondering how does the OpenVPN client act when the computer is already physically on the same network as the OpenVPN server? Right now, the client is configured to connect the the public dns name which will resolve to the public ip address which will NOT get reflected back to the OpenVPN server, so it is affectively blocked from connecting to the OpenVPN server while on the network. Is that a good thing? Or will it constantly try to connect, using up system resources and network resources? We will likely have hundreds of laptops regularly on the physical network with this, so it could contribute to a lot of unnecessary network chatter. Alternatively Would it be better to have the firewall reflect the port back to the OpenVPN server and let it connect? Or have our internal dns resolve the name to the private ip and allow them to connect directly? Would traffic then go over the vpn connection (which I do not want, when already on the physical network)? Or is it possible to tell it to ignore the connection when the client and server are already on the same network? TLDR What's a sane way of handling OpenVPN client running as an always-on service when the client and server will often be on the same network?

  • In an Excel calendar, how can I create a calendar event for a date based on an entry for another date?

    Sounds a bit confusing, doesn't it? I've created an 'events calendar' in Excel for my local area. Each date throughout the year is assigned to a row. What I want to do is, when I enter an event for a particular date, then automatically create an entry elsewhere in the calendar for an action to be taken. So for example, There's an event on the 30th July, so I enter it into the calendar. I'd like to be able to specify that an entry should be made 4 weeks earlier, on the 2nd July, to tell me to blog, tweet or whatever about that particular event. Can Excel help me to do that and if so, what do I need to do?

  • HP p410i array controller - what happens if i add memory?

    I have a p410i array controller that only has 256ram. We want to create a raid 5 so we have procured a 512 write back cache module. If we install the write back cache, will this erase the existing raid information. The server currently has 2 disks in raid 1. 6 are spare waiting for an upgrade to create a raid 5. the concern is if we replace/upgrade the memory for the controller, we will wipe the existing production raid 1 array.   • Linux : How to convert media files to DVD format and burn?

    I have a load of media files on my PC, mostly AVI/MKV and some mpegs. On windows, I would use ConvertXToDVD to convert these to DVD format, and to burn to disc. That application also lets you save a bit of space on the DVD to put the original file in its AVI format on as well. How can I do this on linux? What are the alternatives to this Windows application? I could try to run ConvertXtoDVD under wine but I would prefer to find a native linux solution Thanks in advance!
