  • Keyboard for programmers

    I'm trying to improve my working environment and I'm still searching for that perfect keyboard that practically types bug-free code all by itself. At the moment I'm using a Logitech Wave for my Windows need and an Apple Wireless Keyboard (the one without a numeric keypad) when doing OS X stuff. I'm quite happy with the Logitech Wave but I would prefer one without all the extra multimedia buttons. What I like most about the Apple Wireless Keyboard is that it is very similar to the Macbook's keyboard which for me makes it easier to write code when on my Macbook. What kind of keyboard would you recommend for going all out writing code until your fingers bleed? I have remapped the Caps Lock key to Ctrl which after a while feels really good, until I have to sit at another computer or when someone at work is going to show me something on my computer. Are there other little keyboard tricks that you use to get a little bit more productive? I have looked into switching to Dvorak but I have decided it's not for me.

    I use Linux as primary OS. I need some suggestions regarding how should I set up my desktop and development. I do work on mostly .Net and Drupal, but some time on other lamp products and C/C++, Qt. I'm also interested in mobile (android..) and embedded development. Currently I install everything on my main OS, even I use it a little. I use VMs a little. Should I use separate VM for each kind of development (like one for .Net/Mono, another C++, one for mobile and one for db only, one for xyz things etc) Keep primary development environment on main os and moveothers in VM. main os should be messed up keep things easy to organize (must) performance should be optimal

  • Jquery UI Sortable - Get the item being sorted.

    Hi, When using Jquery UI Sortable (which is great by the way) how do you get the item that is currently being sorted. When you use $(this); it return the actual sortable list, not the current sorted item. I want to do fancy-pants things with the widget when the user is dragging it around. E.g. Animate it when dragging between two lists. So how do I get the current item being sorted?   • tetris rotation

    Hey, For university we're supposed to write a game (the language is modula2 little chance you know it). Each tetromino is defined through a central piece and 3 relative pieces, Now when it comes to rotation i just rotate the relative blocks (linear algebra). What i am asking myself is how to handle the rotations a user does when the piece has already "landed" because than the user has a little time left to move his pieve quickly into the desired position but in tetris versions all over the web you can "rotate over" other pieces, but i dont seem to get it with my rotation. Over what piece do i need to rotate? are there guidelines? Thanks

  • Software to simplify displaying build status on a big visible monitor for team?

    I had a little bit of budget left at year end and I wanted to start a little skunk works project to display build status what everyone was working on (our team is aobut 10 folks all told). I am thinking to buy a 47" LCD HD TV and drive it from a small pc via a browser/.NET web application. I was going to build the software over the christmas break since we are closed for 2 weeks starting this Friday. I thought I would solicit advise/feedback on what other teams had done. a lot of the tools we use SVN, Mantis have RSS feeds that I was thinking to render. Is this the way to go ?     So I'm brand new to Netflix's API and have never used an API ever before. I'm ok with Objective-C and Cocoa Touch but just have no clue where to start when accessing the API and how to in general. Can someone help me get started with some code that will access titles in Netflix or just how to access a REST API in general with authentication. Thanks. Update: I've looked at the documents and I'm still a little lost because the Netflix API is a little weird with OAuth. Any help?

  • Best Open Source Project Hosting Site

    I want to start an open source project, but the rise in hosting sites leaves me a little paralyzed with choice. I know a little about several: I never really liked SourceForge's UI but it still feels like the site I think of when I think "open source project hosting". Google Code Project Hosting looks clean and useful but doesn't seem as feature complete as SourceForge. I've heard good things about Launchpad but don't know much about it nor do I know Bazaar (though I'd be interested in learning it). I know almost nothing about GitHub and, like Bazaar, I don't know Git. Does anyone have any experience with these sites or some other cool code host? Any recommendations?   • JAVA Classes in Game programming.

    I'm doing a little strategy game to help me learn Java in a fun way. The thing is I visioned the units as objects that would self draw on the game map (using images and buffering) and would react to the mouse actions with listeners attached to them. Now, based on some tutorials I've been reading regarding basic game programming, all seems to be drawn in the Graphics method of my Map class. If a new unit emerges, i just update the Map.Graphics method, it's not as easy as making a new Unit object which would self draw... In this case, I'd be stuck with a whole bunch of Map methods instead of using classes for rendering new things. So my question is, is it possible to use classes for rendering units, interface objects, etc, or i'll have to create methods and just do some kind of structural programming instead of object oriented? I'm a little bit confused and I'd like to have a mental blueprint of how things would be organized. Thanks!

  • What's a good bit of JS or JQuery for horizontally scrolling news ticker

    Hi, I am looking for a little bit of JQuery or JS that allows me to produce a horizontally scrolling "news ticker" list. The produced HTML needs to be standards compliant as well. I have tried liScroll but this has a habit of breaking (some content ends up on a second line at the start of the scroll), especially with longer lists. I have also tried this News Ticker but when a DOCTYPE is included the scrolling will jolt rather than cycle smoothly at the end of each cycle. Any suggestions are appreciated. Edit So thanks to Matt Hinze's suggestion I realised I could do what I wanted to do with JQuery animate (I require continuous scrolling not discrete scrolling like the example). However, I quickly ran into similar problems to those I was having with liScroll and after all that realised a CSS issue (as always) was responsible. Solution: liScroll - change the default 'var stripWidth = 0' to something like 100, to give a little space and avoid new line wrapping.

  • Are these good interview questions for Flex developer?

    I am responsible for creating a team, which will build a Flex application. Unfortunately I have zero experience with Flex. So I found an expert within our company to interview candidates. Our expert came up with the following questions: how to write item renderers explain methods commitProperties, updateDisplayList, measure binding positive / negative parts, problems with binding what is ClassFactory ? And why is it needed ? how callLater works ? what is layoutChrome ? what is skin ? did you use autogeneration for Java backend ? how to override managers ? like PopupManager . These sound a little too specific for my taste. Would you say they are decent questions? Is it fair to say, for example, that if Flex developer does not know how to write item renderer, he has very little knowledge of Flex?

  • Writing annotataion schemas for Callisto

    Does anybody know where I can find documentation on how to write annotation schemas for Callisto? I'm looking to write something a little more complicated than I can generate from a DTD -- that only gives me the ability to tag different kinds of text mentions. I'm looking to create a schema that represents a single type of relationship between five or six different kinds of textual mentions (and some of these types of mentions have attributes that I need to assign values to), and possibly having a second type of relationship between the first two instances of the first type of relationship. (Alternatively, does anybody know of any software that would be better for this kind of schema? I've been looking at WordFreak, but it's a little clumsy, and it doesn't support attributes on its textual mentions.)

    I've been tinkering with a regex answer by yukondude with little success. I'm trying to kill processes that are older than 10 minutes. I already know what the process IDs are. I'm looping over an array every 10 min to see if any lingering procs are around and need to be killed. Anybody have any quick thoughts on this?     Hi everybody, I have a little (maybe the answer could require a book) question about web services and server side programming. But first, a little preamble. Recently we have seen new kind of applications & games using some kind of real-time interaction with a database, or more generally, with other users. I'm talking about shared drawing canvas, games like this , or simple chats, or the Android app "a World of Photo", where in real time you see who is online, to share your photos, etc. Now my question: Are all these apps based on classic TCP client/server architectures or is there a way to make them in a simpler way, like a web platform like LAMP? What I'm asking, in other words is: Can PHP+MySQL (or JSP, or RoR, or any other server language) provide a way to make online users communicate in real time and share data? Is there a way to do that without the ugly and heavy mechanism of temporary tables? Thank you! I hope I've been clear.

    Hey Guys I have a website and am planning to develop a mobile version of it for the iphone, blackberry and android. My website is a social network built on PHP Zend framework. Now all these mobile apps are going to be having the same functionality like the website. I am little ignorant about this - but from a high level I understand that all these mobile apps should not have to write any backend logic. For every functionality - they will simply make a web service API call to interact with the backend. So does that mean, for every functionality I need to create a web service method. Can the existing code be re used - I'm a little lost - Can someone shed some light on this matter or point me in the right direction (like some articles) Thanks

  • Daemon with Clojure/JVM

    I'd like to have a small (not doing too damn much) daemon running on a little server, watching a directory for new files being added to it (and any directories in the main one), and calling another Clojure program to deal with that new file. Ideally, each file would be added to a queue (a list represented by a ref in Clojure?) and the main process would take care of those files in the queue on a FIFO basis. My question is: is having a JVM up running this little program all the time too much a resource hog? And do you have any suggestions as to how go about doing this? Thank you very much!

  • How can I click a button behind a transparent UIView?

    Let's say we have a view controller with one sub view. the subview takes up the center of the screen with 100 px margins on all sides. We then add a bunch of little stuff to click on inside that subview. We are only using the subview to take advantage of the new frame ( x=0, y=0 inside the subview is actually 100,100 in the parent view). Then, imagine that we have something behind the subview, like a menu. I want the user to be able to select any of the "little stuff" in the subview, but if there is nothing there, I want touches to pass through it (since the background is clear anyway) to the buttons behind it. How can I do this? It looks like touchesBegan goes through, but buttons don't work.

  • Is there a way to watch all COM activity on a computer?

    I'm trying to deal with a piece of specialized hardware, that presents it's interface as a COM object, using win32com in Python. However, the documentation for how to actually set up the hardware through the COM object is sparse (it requires a significant amount of initialization), and entirely oriented at using a bunch of pre-built libraries for Visual Studio, which are not accessible through python. That said, is there any way to watch all local COM activity, so I can sort through the activity logs to try and figure out how the existing demo programs properly initialize the hardware, and replicate the behavior in my python script? Ideally, there would be something in the vein of wireshark for doing this. Note: I have very little (read: basically no) experience using COM, as my focus is mostly embedded hardware (and a little python dev on the side). However, I'm stuck with this particular device.

  • Raspberry Pi cluster, neuron networks and brain simulation

    Since the RBPI (Raspberry Pi) has very low power consumption and very low production price, it means one could build a very big cluster with those. I'm not sure, but a cluster of 100000 RBPI would take little power and little room. Now I think it might not be as powerful as existing supercomputers in terms of FLOPS or others sorts of computing measurements, but could it allow better neuronal network simulation ? I'm not sure if saying "1 CPU = 1 neuron" is a reasonable statement, but it seems valid enough. So does it mean such a cluster would more efficient for neuronal network simulation, since it's far more parallel than other classical clusters ?

    I am a programmer and I just got my first kitten. A Google search for nerdy/geeky cat names was unimpressive. She's a little black kitten with a very courageous and adventurous attitude! She has a little light gray spot on her chest which might turn white with time. Here she is on my Flickr Which name would you suggest? Which of these do you like? It should be something short that has a couple contrasting sounds so it stands out a bit when you say it.   • UTF-8 BOM in php response to mootools xmlhttprequest

    Hi, I'm writing my first little AJAX-enabled Joomla component. I'm using mootools. I got a xmlhttprequest to contact my Joomla component, and the component returns a response - just plain text echoed by php, like echo 'Hello World!'; It's all working fine, except wireshark tells me that the response is prepended with \357\273\277\357\273\277 when it gets read by the javascript on the client side. This shows up as a little square before the response in an alert box that the script shows. I don't explicitly set the encoding on the xmlhttprequest; mootools docs say that it defaults to UTF8. What's the right way to handle this? Should I be setting the encoding on the request? Mime type? Should the javascript get rid of it? I'm not planning to have any characters requiring UTF8 in the response, so using plain old ascii would be ok for me too. Thanks

What are the best tools to know if you want to develop on FPGAs? What are the best languages to study? (what HW description languages?)   • UITextView on iPad INCREDIBLY Slow

    I have an NSMutableArray of custom views (that are pretty much 1 UITextView and 1 UILabel with a custom back ground image), these are created as they are need (I start with 2 (though the first one is only 2 UITextFields and the other is normal) of these). Now my issue here seems to be this: as soon as I try to edit any UITextView past the one in the 2nd view, it starts to run incredibly slow, not the app, just the textview. For example, as I type, the little blinky guy lags behind the text and when I click to copy/paste/cut/etc you can see the little balloon fly in from the upper left corner every time. I have run the static analyzer for leaks and come up with nothing and run it alongside some other the testing software in XCode and it does not appear to have any reason for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
