• How do I get security updates for restricted/partner packages?

  I want to perform just security updates on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, keeping the rest of the system unchanged. I need to do this from the command line, no the GUI update manager. I have implemented the solution described here, which seems to work great for this purpose. I merely substituted 'precise' for 'lucid' given that I am on 12.04. My question is: by using apt pinning as described in that answer, will I still receive security updates for packages distributed through the "other" repositories - partner, restricted, multiverse, etc? Or will it only get me updates for the packages in the "core" distribution? thanks! ~l

• Can't upgrade Firefox

  When I first got Ubuntu and got used to it, I decided to install lots of packages, and I overwhelmed the update manager. I had to interrupt it, because the download time was crazy long. That was 2 years ago. I haven't been able to upgrade anything since then. But now, some things I need will not work in my 2-year-old version of Firefox. I want to cancel all of the package installations that I started, and was not able to finish, and I need to upgrade Firefox. What should I do?

• How to change grub-bios to grub-efi

  So a while ago i installed Ubuntu on my Macbook. I had to reinstall it because something in the update manager messed up. Not to concerded about that but for some reason after the installation Ubuntu wont boot. I found out later that Apple hardware uses EFI as the BIOS. Every time i try to install it i make a swap space and the root file to make the installation. I noticed that when i make the boot file its in grub-bios. I need to change this to grub-efi i found out but theres no option to change this. It still wont boot though. When i install it i dont get any errors but doing a little bit of reasearch i find that the boot file may be the problem im not entirely sure how to fix this but if anyone could give me some insight on this subject id very much appreciate it

  I was reading a book about XP programming and about agile teams. While I was reading, I saw this scenario. I've never worked with a development team (just in school). So I would like what do you opine on this situation: Your boss has asked you to deliver software in a time that can only be possible to meet the project team asking if you want to work overtime without pay. All team members have young children. Discuss whether it should accept this request from your boss or should persuade the team to give their time to the organization rather than their families. What could be significant factors in the decision? As a programmer, you are offered an upgrade as project manager, but his feeling is that you can have a more effective contribution in a technical role in one administrative. Write when you should accept that promotion. Somethimes, I sacrifice my free time for accomplishing hits at work, so it's very important to me to know your opinion base of your experience.

• Low graphics mode on Ubuntu 12.04 with Intel Graphics

  When I boot, my computer just tells me it can't detect graphic card (or something else) settings and it has to use the low graphics mode. Then it gives me four choices, but doesn't let me choose any of them. I can get my computer to boot by going to some sort of terminal mode and then typing sudo gdm. The other graphics manager I have is lightdm. I originally had the nVidia propriety driver, and I've tried bumblebee. Mobile Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M is my graphics card. Is there any way to fix this so I can use lightdm again?

• Formatted Ubuntu partition & now grub says "error: no such partition" - can't enter windows

  I had installed Ubuntu (current version: 11.xx) alongside Windows Vista. Now I formatted the Ubuntu partition & merged it with another partition (without thinking, obviously). Now, when I restart the computer, GRUB probably tries to find the old partition (which does no longer exist) and says: error: no such partition. grub rescue> Now I dont know what to do (I'm a total beginner). I tried to re-install Ubuntu on the newly formatted partition but this won't work, because after removing the install-usb (which I am said to do during installation) I find the above error-message again. I guess I need some way to reconfigure grub OR to reinstall grub/ubuntu (on the newly formatted partition) OR to reinstall the windows boot manager (without reinstall. Windows), but I have no idea how to do either of these things.

• Slow Wireless Reconnect After Suspend - Broadcom 4312 with STA drivers

  I am using 10.10 with STA drivers, I reinstalled ubuntu because the b43 drivers were giving me a huge hassle along with some weird kernel issues. My wireless speed is fine, everything works well, except upon restart of computer and after taking the computer out of suspend. It takes about 30-45 seconds for the wireless to reconnect, and I think it is a driver issue (I clicked on the network manager at the top and for about 30 seconds there are no wireless networks listed.) I tried this advice already: http://lilserenity.wordpress.com/2007/10/31/fix-ubuntu-dropping-wireless-on-suspendhibernate-resume/ which basically says to change this: STOP_SERVICES="" to STOP_SERVICES="networking" in the file /etc/default/acpi-support This did not help anything. Something to note is that the issue does not occur when I am logging back in after already logging in once and logging out.

• Problem in Addon Domain name binding with existing directory in my webspace

  I recently purchased a domain thinkzarahatke.com. At the time of purchasing i selected an option, say url redirect, to my existing site. Further I had entered Naming server detail. But I dint find any other option to change URL rewrite parameters under Domain Name Manager. From the cPanel of my hosting space, I had added new domain as addon and set a sundirectory for it. Now If I am trying to access my new domain directly, it is automatically redirecting to my old website. While if i access some inside directory, like thinkzarahatke.com/blog, then i am able to access to my new site. What wrong i done? Please tell me if i need to do some more settings with addon domain.

• Java EE and GlassFish Server Roadmap Update

  2013 has been a stellar year for both the Java EE and GlassFish Server communities. On June 12, Oracle and its partners announced the release of Java EE 7, which delivers on three major themes – HTML5, developer productivity, and meeting enterprise demands. The online event attracted over 10,000 views in the first two days! During the online event, Oracle also announced the availability of GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4, the world's first Java EE 7 compatible application server. The primary role of GlassFish Server Open Source Edition has been, and continues to be, driving adoption of the latest release of the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition. Oracle also announced the Java EE 7 SDK, which bundles GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4, as a Java EE 7 learning aid. Last, Oracle publicly announced the Java EE 7 reference implementation based on GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4. Java EE is a popular platform, as evidenced by the 20+ Java EE 6 compatible implementations available to choose from. After the launch of Java EE 7 and GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4, we began planning the Java EE 8 roadmap, which was covered during the JavaOne Strategy Keynote. To summarize, there is a lot of interest in improving on HTML5 support, Cloud, and investigating NoSQL support. We received a lot of great feedback from the community and customers on what they would like to see in Java EE 8. As we approached JavaOne 2013, we started planning the GlassFish Server roadmap. What we announced at JavaOne was that GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4.1 is scheduled for 2014. Here is an update to that roadmap. GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4.1 is scheduled for 2014 We are planning updates as needed to GlassFish Server Open Source Edition, which is commercially unsupported As we head towards Java EE 8: The trunk will eventually transition to GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5 as a Java EE 8 implementation The Java EE 8 Reference Implementation will be derived from GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5. This replicates what has been done in past Java EE and GlassFish Server releases. Oracle will no longer release future major releases of Oracle GlassFish Server with commercial support – specifically Oracle GlassFish Server 4.x with commercial Java EE 7 support will not be released. Commercial Java EE 7 support will be provided from WebLogic Server. Oracle GlassFish Server will not be releasing a 4.x commercial version Expanding on that last bullet, new and existing Oracle GlassFish Server 2.1.x and 3.1.x commercial customers will continue to be supported according to the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy. Oracle recommends that existing commercial Oracle GlassFish Server customers begin planning to move to Oracle WebLogic Server, which is a natural technical and license migration path forward: Applications developed to Java EE standards can be deployed to both GlassFish Server and Oracle WebLogic Server GlassFish Server and Oracle WebLogic Server have implementation-specific deployment descriptor interoperability (here and here). GlassFish Server 3.x and Oracle WebLogic Server share quite a bit of code, so there are quite a bit of configuration and (extended) feature similarities. Shared code includes JPA, JAX-RS, WebSockets (pre JSR 356 in both cases), CDI, Bean Validation, JAX-WS, JAXB, and WS-AT. Both Oracle GlassFish Server 3.x and Oracle WebLogic Server 12c support Oracle Access Manager, Oracle Coherence, Oracle Directory Server, Oracle Virtual Directory, Oracle Database, Oracle Enterprise Manager and are entitled to support for the underlying Oracle JDK. To summarize, Oracle is committed to the future of Java EE.  Java EE 7 has been released and planning for Java EE 8 has begun. GlassFish Server Open Source Edition continues to be the strategic foundation for Java EE reference implementation going forward. And for developers, updates will be delivered as needed to continue to deliver a great developer experience for GlassFish Server Open Source Edition. We are planning for GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5 as the foundation for the Java EE 8 reference implementation, as well as bundling GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5 in a Java EE 8 SDK, which is the most popular distribution of GlassFish. This will allow GlassFish releases to be more focused on the Java EE platform and community-driven requirements. We continue to encourage community contributions, bug reports, participation on the GlassFish forum, etc. Going forward, Oracle WebLogic Server will be the single strategic commercially supported application server from Oracle. • How to configure permanent autologin?

  I'm trying to set up an Ubuntu 12.04 machine as a kiosk and I would like it, on boot, to automatically log in as my kiosk user "kiosk", and start the appropriate display manager, in this case blackbox. I have configured /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf as in this question and have an appropriate /usr/share/xsessions/blackbox.desktop to launch blackbox. I managed to get initial autologin by using the dbus-send method in this question, however if I right-click and select "Exit" from blackbox, then I am taken back to the login screen. How can I configure lightdm/ubuntu to always autologin as "kiosk" instead of displaying the login screen? Or, failing that, how can I configure blackbox to not display a menu when I right-click?

• Eclipse does not want to use openjdk-7

  I am on a new installation of Ubuntu. I install all the updates, and then restart. I then install openjdk-7-jdk from apt, then I restart. Then I install eclipse-platform, eclipse-jdt, and eclipse-cdt. I then launch Eclipse. When I check the build path for my imported projects it decided that during the eclipse-platform installation to install openjdk-6. Okay, cool. The problem is that I can't use openjdk-7 AT ALL. There is no option to use it in the build path library manager. How can I change it so it uses openjdk-7? I tried reinstalling it already, didn't do anything. Just told me it was already installed. • Package information was last updated 59 days ago even though Ubuntu is up to date

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 and in the update manager I have a message that says package information last updated 59 days ago press the check button to check for software updates I do that, but i'm up to date. I checked other threads with this same problem, and saw i should do sudo apt-get update in a terminal to see which repository is not up to date and when I did, I got this message: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/Release Then I checked for this repository in software sources but couldn't find this specific one. In my /etc/apt/sources.list.d I have only one line: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu oneiric partner #Added by software-center So now I don't know what to do more. Should I upgrade to 12.04 and will it solve my problem? I wouldn't want to upgrade if there is a problem in the last version but I don't know much about Ubuntu so, can anyone help me please? • Thunar not showing thumbnails in Openbox

  I am using openbox 3.5 and my file manager of choice is Thunar but the problem I am facing is thunar not showing thumbnails for folder,video files etc. My Thunar: You can see in the above image that thunar is not showing thumbnails for folders, files but it is showing for pdf and similar is the case for video files no thumbnails. So, what is wrong here am I missing some basic thunar config files. ranrag@ranrag:~$ echo $DESKTOP_SESSION openbox I looked into some forums and they mentioned that there is some dependency of tumbler with thunar but I have latest version of tumbler installed on my system. PS: I already tried thunar preferences but still no luck.

• Wine installation on 12.04 LTS

  Installed wine from the Software Center and kept getting errors when trying to load windows programs. Uninstalled and did the apt-get installation of the latest version (1.5.7) Ran Wine configuration and get a "Failed to connect to the mount manager, the drive configuration cannot be edited" If i try to install a program it immediately goes to "Internal error" Any Ideas or possible solutions would be appreciated.
