  • Windows Azure Tools for Microsoft Visual Studio 1.2 (June 2010)

    I have good news! Microsoft has released the June 2010 Windows Azure Tools + SDK. These new tools extend Visual Studio (both VS 2010 & VS 2008) for Windows Azure development. With these tools you can create, configure, debug, build, run, and deploy scalable web apps on Windows Azure. At first glance what I see as some of the most interesting points of interest are the fact that Visual Studio 2010 RTM is fully supported as well as .NET 4 support. You can choose to build your apps with the .NET 3.5 or .NET 4 frameworks. Another area of interest that I’ll be digging into is the cloud storage explorer. It provides a read-only view of your Windows Azure tables and blob containers from within Visual Studio via the Server Explorer. I’m sure I’ll have more to say about the Windows Azure Tools as I dig deeper… Have a day. :-|

  • proper way to uninstall ubuntu server

    I have installed ubuntu server on Widows 8.1 Hyper-V virtual machine. As part of learning I just want to remove the ubuntu server completely sothat I can reinstall the server once again to get a better understanding on the installation process. If I delete the Virtual Machine (By remove option in Hyper - V) I am able to delete the server and the hard disc where the server is installed. But, Using this process my Host OS Windows 8.1 is getting corrupted and had to reinstall the Windows OS (Tried this 3 times already). Can someone please tell me the right way of uninstalling the ubuntu server from the Hyper-V virtual machine. Thanks, Uday

  • In Search of Automatic ORM with REST interface

    I have this wish that so far Google hasn't been able to fulfill. I want to find a package (ideally in PHP, because I know PHP, but I guess that's not a hard requirement) that you point at a database, it builds an ORM based on what it finds there, and exposes a REST interface over the web. Everything I've found in my searches requires a bunch of code--like, it wants you to build the classes for it, but it'll handle the REST request routing. Or it does database and relational stuff just fine, but you have to build your own methods for all the CRUD actions. That's dumb. REST is well defined. If I wanted to re-invent the wheel, I totally could, but I don't want to. Isn't there somebody who's built a one-shot super-simple auto-RESTing web service package?

  • Detecting Duplicates Using Oracle Business Rules

    Recently I was involved with a Business Process Management Proof of Concept (BPM PoC) where we wanted to show how customers could use Oracle Business Rules (OBR) to easily define some rules to detect certain conditions, such as duplicate account numbers, duplicate names, high transaction amounts, etc, in a set of transactions. Traditionally you would have to loop through the transactions and compare each transaction with each other to find matching conditions. This is not particularly nice as it relies on more traditional approaches (coding) and is not the most efficient way. OBR is a great place to house these types’ of rules as it allows users/developers to externalise the rules, in a simpler manner, externalising the rules from the message flows and allows users to change them when required. So I went ahead looking for some examples. After quite a bit of time spent Googling, I did not find much out in the blogosphere. In fact the best example was actually from...... wait for it...... Oracle Documentation! (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28271_01/user.1111/e10228/rules_start.htm#ASRUG228) However, if you followed the link there was not much explanation provided with the example. So the aim of this article is to provide a little more explanation to the example so that it can be better understood. Note: I won’t be covering the BPM parts in great detail. Use case: Payment instruction file is required to be processed. Before instruction file can be processed it needs to be approved by a business user. Before the approval process, it would be useful to run the payment instruction file through OBR to look for transactions of interest. The output of the OBR can then be used to flag the transactions for the approvers to investigate. Example BPM Process So let’s start defining the Business Rules Dictionary. For the input into our rules, we will be passing in an array of payments which contain some basic information for our demo purposes. Input to Business Rules And for our output we want to have an array of rule output messages. Note that the element I am using for the output is only for one rule message element and not an array. We will configure the Business Rules component later to return an array instead. Output from Business Rules Business Rule – Create Dictionary Fill in all the details and click OK. Open the Business Rules component and select Decision Functions from the side. Modify the Decision Function Configuration Select the decision function and click on the edit button (the pencil), don’t worry that JDeveloper indicates that there is an error with the decision function. Then click the Ouputs tab and make sure the checkbox under the List column is checked, this is to tell the Business Rules component that it should return an array of rule message elements. Updating the Decision Service Next we will define the actual rules. Click on Ruleset1 on the side and then the Create Rule in the IF/THEN Rule section. Creating new rule in ruleset Ok, this is where some detailed explanation is required. Remember that the input to this Business Rules dictionary is a list of payments, each of those payments were of the complex type PaymentType. Each of those payments in the Oracle Business Rules engine is treated as a fact in its working memory. Implemented rule So in the IF/THEN rule, the first task is to grab two PaymentType facts from the working memory and assign them to temporary variable names (payment1 and payment2 in our example). Matching facts Once we have them in the temporary variables, we can then start comparing them to each other. For our demonstration we want to find payments where the account numbers were the same but the account name was different. Suspicious payment instruction And to stop the rule from comparing the same facts to each other, over and over again, we have to include the last test. Stop rule from comparing endlessly And that’s it! No for loops, no need to keep track of what you have or have not compared, OBR handles all that for you because everything is done in its working memory. And once all the tests have been satisfied we need to assert a new fact for the output. Assert the output fact Save your Business Rules. Next step is to complete the data association in the BPM process. Pay extra care to use Copy List instead of the default Copy when doing data association at an array level. Input and output data association Deploy and test. Test data Rule matched Parting words: Ideally you would then use the output of the Business Rules component to then display/flag the transactions which triggered the rule so that the approver can investigate.     I would like to install the latest Ubuntu Touch on a 2013 Nexus 7 tablet. Which version should I be looking for: the regular Ubuntu (for ARM platform) or a separate Ubuntu Touch? I understand that after Ubuntu Touch is in frantic development, but I would like to be able to keep track which one is which. I can see the following images: Ubuntu 14.09 RTM, daily-preinstalled Ubuntu Touch 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Daily Build Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) Daily Build, but only i386 and amd64; no ARM. Does it mean that ARM variant has moved to one of the first two links?

  • Is Silverlight only for eye-candy, or does it have a use in business?

    Granted that Silverlight may make eye-popping websites of great beauty, is there any justification for using it to make practical web applications that have serious business purposes? I'd like to use it (to learn it) for a new assignment I have, which is to build a web-based application that keeps track of the data interfaces used in our organization, but I'm not sure how to justify it, even to myself. Any thoughts on this? If I can't justify it then I will have to build the app using the same old tired straight ASP.NET approach I've used (it seems) a hundred times already.

  • What are the relative merits for implementing an Erlang-style "Continuation" pattern in C#

    What are the relative merits (or demerits) for implementing an Erlang-style "Continuation" pattern in C#. I'm working on a project that has a large number of Lowest priority threads and I'm wondering if my approach may be all wrong. It would seem there is a reasonable upper limit to the number of long-running threads that any one Process 'should' spawn. With that said, I'm not sure what would signal the tipping-point for too many thread or when alternate patterns such as "Continuation" would be more suitable. In this case, many of the threads do a small amount of work and then sleep until woken to go again (Ex. Heartbeat, purge caches, etc...). This continues for the life of the Process.

    When working on a software project or a website, do you develop with localization in mind? By this I mean e.g. Externalizing all strings, including error messages. Not using images that contain text. Designing your UI with text expansion in mind. Using pseudo-translation to test your UI's early in the process. etc. On projects you work on, are these in the 'nice to have' category and let the L10N team worry about the rest, or do you have localization readiness built into your development process? I'm interested to hear how developers view localization in general.

    Back in 2006 I wrote a blog post titled: Managed code and the Shell – Don't!. Please visit that post to see why that advice was given.The crux of the issue has been addressed in the latest CLR via In-Process Side-by-Side Execution. In addition to the MSDN documentation I just linked, there is also an MSDN article on the topic: In-Process Side-by-Side.Now, even though the major technical impediment seems to be removed, I don’t know if Microsoft is now officially supporting managed extensions to the shell. Either way, I noticed a CodePlex project that is marching ahead to enable exactly that: Managed Mini Shell Extension Framework.   • SharePoint Designer 2010 Workflow Email Link To Item

    In this post I’ll walk you through the process of sending an email that contains a link to the current item from a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow.  This is a process that has been published on many other forums and blogs, but many that I have seen are more complex than seems necessary. Problem     A common request from SharePoint users is to get an email which contains a link to review/approve/edit the workflow item.  SharePoint list items contain an automatic property for Url Path, but unfortunately that Url is not properly formatted to retrieve the item if you include it directly on the message body.  I tried a few solutions suggested from other blogs or forums that took a substring of the Url Path property, concatenated the display form view Url, and mixed in some other strings.  While I was able to get this working in some scenarios I still had issues in general. Solution     My solution involved adding a hyperlink to the message body.  This ended up being far easier than I had expected and fairly intuitive once I found the correct property to use.  Follow these steps to see what I did.     First add a “Send an Email” action to your workflow.  Edit the action to pull up the email configuration dialog.  Click the “Add hyperlink” button seen below. When prompted for the address of the link click the fx button to perform a lookup.  Choose Workflow Context from the “data source” dropdown.  Choose Current Item URL from the “field from source” dropdown.  Click OK. Your Edit Hyperlink dialog should now look something like this. The end result will be a hyperlink added to your email pointing to the current workflow item.  Note: this link points to the non-modal dialog display form (display form similar to what you had in 2007). Conclusion     In this post I walked you through the steps to create a SharePoint Designer 2010 workflow with an email that contains a link to the current item.  While there are many other options for accomplishing this out on the web I found this to be a more concise process and easy to understand.  Hopefully you found this helpful as well.  Feel free to leave any comments or feedback if you’ve found other ways that were helpful to you.         -Frog Out

    I have some problems in my hand and would like to resolve them by myself (rather than hiring some professional, obviously due to cash problem!): build a really good website (planning to set-up my own start-up). build some good software (preferrably with exe installation files) on many mathematical and statistical techniques. To accomplish those tasks, is it worth to learn Python in advance level? I have advanced programming experiences with R and Matlab and VBA (and some sort of C), however not anything on Python.     I registered a domain with Namecheap.com, and started the Google Apps registration process. After the initial data filling, google apps wishes me to prove the ownership of a domain, and has given me 4 choices: Add a DNS record to your domain's configuration Link to your Google Analytics account Upload an HTML file to your server Add a meta tag to your site's home page What is the differences between these, and how do I (if someone knows perhaps how to do it on Namecheap, it would be even better) complete this step in the process? I would appreciate any advice you might have.
