• WCF Security Transport Security Questions

  I'm writing a set of WCF services that rely on transport security with Windows Authentication using the trusted subsystem model. However, I want to perform authorization based on the original client user that initiated the request (e.g. a user from a website with a username/password). I'm planning to achieve this by adding the original user's credentials in the header before the client sends the message and then the service will use the supplied credentials to authorize the user. So I have a few questions about this implementation: 1) using transport security with windows auth, I do NOT need to worry about again encrypting the passed credentials to ensure the validity... WCF automatically takes care of this - is this correct? 2) how does this implementation prevent a malicious service, running under some windows account within the domain, to send a message tagged with spoofed credentials. for e.g. a malicious service replaces the credentials with an Admin user to do something bad? If I then call User.IsInRole, and pass in the name of any of those groups, I always get a false. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks

• Consumed WCF service returns void although return type (& value) specified

  I have a WCF service that I am attempting to connect to via a console application for testing (although will move to WPF for the final interface). I have generated the proxy, added the service reference to my project in visual studio and I can see all the methods I have created in my WCF interface: SupportStaffServiceClient client = new SupportStaffServiceClient("WSHttpBinding_ISupportStaffService"); client.myMethod(message); However when I call a method, which in the WCF interface is specified as returning a value, the method returns void in the console application. client.getMethod(message); The WCF service method is definitely returning a message, I'm just unsure as to why the client cannot "see" the return.

• How to set post parameters in WebClient class in a Silverlight app.

  First of all, I wrote a simple php page, that picks up some variables from the POST parameters such as a query and a authentication string, and returns the result as xml. I intend to call this page with the WebClient class from a Silverlight application. I'm using POST because we are querying the database with any valid sql statement, not only select statements. The WebClient class uses the UploadDataAsync method to post to a http server, however it requires the post parameters be passed as a NameValueCollection. This class is missing in the Silverlight runtime. How do I proceed???

  Hi, I am developing an application suite where users will need to connect to a server and depending on their account type they will be given some services. The server will run Linux. Can you please suggest me some user management API which I can use to develop the server program? By user management I mean user authentication and other related functionalities. I prefer to work in C++ or python, but any other language should not be a problem. Please note that this application suite is not web based. • How should I use this SetSPN command when installing SharePoint

  In the SharePoint install document I have it says, If you use a domain user account for the SQL Server service account, you must make sure that a valid service principal name (SPN) for that account and instance of SQL Server on their database server exists in their environment. This is the case regardless of whether you use NTLM or Kerberos authentication for Office SharePoint Server 2007. You must configure the SPN for that account in the domain using the Setspn.exe command-line tool. Setspn.exe is installed by default on computers running Windows Server 2008. Run the following command on a computer that is joined to the same domain as the user/service account. setspn -a <http/<farmclusterdnsname> <serviceaccountname> What should the parameters be in this case? I guess the serviceaccountname would be 'domain\username' not sure what the first parameter should be though. This is the technet link for SetSPN.

• PHP file download header

  I have developed a small download system in PHP, where files are downloaded through a proxy file. When I had to do this before, I just redirected by changing the location header; which is not what I want to do now. So, obviously, the first issue that appeared is what kind of header must I set. First of all, Content-Disposition is set as "attachment", so this is good, but I can't seem to get around Content-Type. I need to set it to fit all possible files that might be downloaded through this system. I don't know how to detect the file header automatically, and I'm trying to aviod a GIANT switch. What are my options? Thanks!

• Twitter oauth authorization in a pop-up instead of in main browser window

  I feel incredibly stupid for even asking this since the answer might already be under my nose but here it goes: TweetMeme has a Re-tweet twitter widget that publishers can place on their blogs. When a user clicks on the widget, it pops open a window which allows the user to authenticate themselves with twitter and then re-tweet. This seems to use some special Twitter oauth popup form factor - unless there is something fancier happening under the surface to authenticate the user. The pop-up window looks like this: http://twitpic.com/1kepcr I'd rather handle an authentication via a pop-up rather than send the user to a brand new page (for the app I'm working on) and they seem to have the most graceful solution. Thoughts on how they did this?

  For some unknown reason OracleXETNSListener won't start which prevents SQL Developer from connecting to it. EDIT: I use exchange so its a little different, but its called a smart host in exchange, but in plain SMTP service config i think its called something else. Cant remember exactly the setting name. Thank you for pointing me at the Smart host field. Mail is getting delivered now. In the Default SMTP Virtual Server properties, the Delivery tab, click Advanced and fill the "Smart host" field with the address that your provider gives you.   I need to write a google gadget that reads feeds from google groups. Trouble is I'm making an ajax call to retrieve the feeds and our google apps domain is protected by CAS (central authentication service). So, I'm getting a 400 bad request on making the call. I suspect that the browser is not sending the cookie when making ajax call. How do I ensure that the cookie is also sent with the ajax call? OR if that's not supposed to be the problem, what do i need to do?

  Originally the site was set up using a Website project which ended up not working for various reasons. I'm trying to make it work as a web application project and have started from the ground up with a new project. I have looked online and not found a good resource that explains some of the "simple" things that are taken for granted when it's a website project. Some things specifically: How am I specifying the external sql database that the membership site should use? Is it possible to set privileges on a folder and require authentication when accessing that content or does each page need to check for itself? Once again, I'm looking for some resources I can use as I move forward as opposed to answers to specific questions (although those are welcome as well).

  I'm in the process of setting up a WCF Data Services web service and I'm trying to sort out the security configuration. Although there's quite a lot of documentation out there for configuring WCF security, a lot of it seems to be outmoded or does not apply to my scenario. Ultimately, I am planning on managing authorization of operations via change interceptors. Thus, all I really need is the simplest way to permit a client to pass credentials along with a request and to be able to authenticate those credentials against either AD or an ASP.NET membership provider (I'd much prefer the latter unless it makes things much more complicated). I'm intending to manage encryption at the transport level (i.e. HTTPS). I'm hoping that the eventual solution does not involve a huge web.config. Likewise, I'd much prefer to avoid writing custom code for the purpose of authentication.

We use SharePoint in the company for basic document sharing and team sites. I need an easy to use wiki tool which is capable of showing the content like WikiPedia contents and it would be great if I could have the SharePoint tree view and Active Directory authentication also. I googled it and found Atlassian's Confluence and it seems that this product is capable of the requirements. We use Jira for issue tracking, so we can use it's reporting in dashboards. I need and it has a Wiki part which displays wiki pages in tree view. It should be like Does anyone used Confluence or have an idea for other products which meets my requirements

• Trying to run WCF web service on non-domain VM, Security Errors

  Am I in a Catch-22 situation here? My goal is to take a WCF service that I inherited, and run it on a VM and test it by calling it from my desktop PC. The VM is in a workgroup, and not in the company's domain. Basically, we need more test environments, ideally one per developer (we may have 2 to 4 people that need this). Thus the idea of the VM was that each developer could have his own web server that somewhat matches or real environment (where we actually have two websites, an external/exposed and internal). [Using VS2010 .NET 4.0] In the internal service, each method was decorated with this attribute: [OperationBehavior(Impersonation = ImpersonationOption.Required)] I'm still researching why this was needed. I think it's because a webapp calls the "internal" service, and either a) we need the credentials of the user, or b) we may doing some PrinciplePermission.Demands to see if the user is in a group. My interest is creating some ConsoleTest programs or UnitTest programs. I changed to allowed like this: [OperationBehavior(Impersonation = ImpersonationOption.Allowed)] because I was getting this error in trying to view the .svc in the browser: The contract operation 'EditAccountFamily' requires Windows identity for automatic impersonation. A Windows identity that represents the caller is not provided by binding ('WSHttpBinding','http://tempuri.org/') for contract ('IAdminService','http://tempuri.org/'. I don't get that error with the original bindings look like this: However, I believe I need to turn off this security since the web service is not on the domain. I tend to get these errors in the client: 1) The request for security token could not be satisfied because authentication failed - as an InnerException of "SecurityNegotiation was unhandled". or 2) The caller was not authenticated by the service as an InnerException of "SecurityNegotiation was unhandled". So can I create some configuration of code and web.config that will allow each developer to work on his own VM? Or must I join the VM to the domain? The number of permutations seems near endless. I've started to create a Word.doc that says what to do with each error, but now I'm in the catch-22 where I'm stuck. • Check ReturnUrl is valid before redirecting

  I'm using ASP.NET Membership and Form Authentication and before redirecting to the returnURL I wanted to validate it. For those unfamiliar with the workflow, basically if you request a page that requires that you are authenticated, you are redirected to a login page. In the URL string you'll see a parameter called returnURL, e.g. http://example.com/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2fprotected%2fdefault.aspx Whether you use this in a redirect such as Response.Redirect(returnURL) or indirectly through the FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage method, it passes without validating returnURL. FormsAuthentication.RedirectFromLoginPage does have a security check that it is isn't leaving the domain, but that still doesn't stop someone from putting enough random characters to cause an error. I tried using System.IO.File.Exists(Server.MapPath(returnURL)) but given enough illegal characters it cause Server.MapPath to error. Note: URLEncoding doesn't work because we are not cleaning a parameter, but the primary URL. Any other suggestions for validating or cleaning the returnURL value?

  Hi All, In my work place, we have several classic ASP and ASP.NET application. All these application though doing different works are integrated through a single sign on mode, which is handled by one main application. The main application is in classic ASP and verifies the userid and password initially and then stores the UserID in a session variable, which is then used by all other ASP and ASP.NET page as a valid Authenticated user. (For DOT NET pages we use session bridging) Is this how authentication is done is classic ASP? (I dont know classic ASP much) From the time I was introduced to this setup, I started to worry whether this setup is flawless? Is there any better way to handle the same ?   I am a beginner in native development.I made a project using xcode in objective C.It builded successfully.But when I run the project ,an error came like 'unrecognized selector sent to instance'.Why this is happening ?can anyone help me to solve this?I am attaching the error that I am getting with this..   I am trying to add a service reference to axapta 2009. All is working well, its a simple web method(external webservice) that gets executed on the server tier(necessary, otherwise clr interop error) But I've ran into the following problems : is it possible to close the proxy one way or another? Because this option is not available in the generated service object in AX (only the webmethods and a tostring). at a certain moment, i ran into a service with faulted state. Normally, you create the service object again, but this didnt solve anything, until i restarted the AOS. Is this normal behaviour? Is the service object cached or something like that on server side? Thx in advance.

• Is the usage of Isolated Storage in Silverlight 3 a security concern

  I am using Silverlight 3 on my website. I have a Login Page for role based authentication, that routes users with different privileges to different parts of the website. I want to use something analogous to the Session Variables available in standard ASP.Net applications. I intend to use Isolated Storage to achieve this. But I am skeptical about security in this option, as the Isolated Storage exists on the client side, and can be manipulated on client side. I am new to the Isolated Storage concept and don't know about the security options provided by it in terms of Encryption and server-side validation etc. If any of you have used it or are aware of the security provided in this case, could you please shed some light on the same. • Authenticating from a "child" application via CAS

  I have a portal application that loads external content (widgets) via an iframe. Users login to CAS via the portal itself. There are a few portal APIs, though, that need to be called from that external content. What information do I have to pass from the portal to the widgets that the widgets can use to make these calls without being rejected by CAS? UPDATE The more I investigate, the more I think that my question boils down to how CAS actually does what it's supposed to do. In other words, how can I go from one site where I've authenticated to another and tell it that I've already done the authentication thing. What's the mechanism behind that and how can I employ in in a web context.
