  • A couple of questions on exceptions/flow control and the application of custom exceptions

    1) Custom exceptions can help make your intentions clear. How can this be? The intention is to handle or log the exception, regardless of whether the type is built-in or custom. The main reason I use custom exceptions is to not use one exception type to cover the same problem in different contexts (eg parameter is null in system code which may be effect by an external factor and an empty shopping basket). However, the partition between system and business-domain code and using different exception types seems very obvious and not making the most of custom exceptions. Related to this, if custom exceptions cover the business exceptions, I could also get all the places which are sources for exceptions at the business domain level using "Find all references". Is it worth adding exceptions if you check the arguments in a method for being null, use them a few times, and then add the catch? Is it a realistic risk that an external factor or some other freak cause could cause the argument to be null after being checked anyway? 2) What does it mean when exceptions should not be used to control the flow of programs and why not? I assume this is like: if (exceptionVariable != null) { } Is it generally good practise to fill every variable in an exception object? As a developer, do you expect every possible variable to be filled by another coder?

    Please forgive me as my head is spinning. I have tried so many solutions to this issue, that I'm almost not sure where I am at this point. At this point in time I have these issues in my Production, Test, and Dev environments. For simplicity sake, I will just try to get it working in Dev first. Here is my setup: Database/Reporting Server (Same server): Windows Server 2003 SP2 SQL Server 2005 SP3 Development Box: Windows 7 Visual Studio 2008 SP1 SQL Server 2008 SP1 (not being used in this case, but wanted to include it in case it is relative) Internet Explorer 8 Details: * I have a custom ASP.NET application that is using ReportViewer to access reports on my Database/Reporting Server. * I am able to connect directly to Report Manager and print with no trouble. * When I view source on the page with ReportViewer, it says I'm am using version 9.0.30729.4402 . * The classid of the rsclientprint.dll that keeps getting installed to my c:\windows\downloaded program files directory is {41861299-EAB2-4DCC-986C-802AE12AC499}. * I have tried taking the rsclientprint.cab file from my Database/Reporting Server and installing it directly to my Development Box and had no success. I made sure to unregister the previously installed dll first. I feel like I have read as many solutions as I can, and so I turn to you for some assistance.   • Troubleshoot Page Loading Issue (ActiveX control)

    Apologies for cryptic title, I'm hoping most people will read this BEFORE trying to move it to server fault. I might try and discourage the "too hard basket, move it to server fault anyway" crowd as well :). I have a page which will open cleanly when it's opened in it's own browser window/tab. The exact same URL, when loaded as part of a frame in a page in the same (local intranet) security zone shows the error: Your security settins do not allow websites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer. This page may not display correctly. Click Here for options. How do I troubleshoot IE to work out which ActiveX control won't load in the frame but does load if the page is opened directly? Please note that I have dropped the security fully AND I've also moved EVERY setting in IE to enable or allow and restarted the browser but I STILL get the same issue. The two sites are on different machines in the same domain. I can't access website source code but I can ask for it to be fixed, so I'd really appreciate some help on this.

  • WPF Control validation

    Hi all, I'm developing a WPF GUI framework and have had bad experiences with two way binding and lots of un-needed events being fire(mainly in Flex) so I have gone down the route of having bindings (string that represent object paths) in my controls. When a view is requested to be displayed the controller loads the view, and gets the needed entities (using the bindings) from the DB and populates the controls with the correct values. This has a number of advantages i.e. lazy loading, default undo behaviour etc. When the data in the view needs to be saved the view is passed back to the controller again which basically does the reserve i.e. re-populates the entities from the view if values have changed. However, I have run into problems when I try and validate the components. Each entity has attributes on its properties that define validation rules which the controller can access easily and validate the data from the view against it. The actual validation of data is fine. The problem comes when I want the GUI control to display error validation information. It I try changing the style I get errors saying styles cannot be changed once in use. Is the a way in c# to fire off the normal WPF validation mechanism and just proved it with the validaiton errors the controller has found? Thanks in advance Jon

  • Using Jquery UI Tab control in ASP.NET MVC

    I am new to jquery and am trying out UI plugins. For some reason this following code does not work, in the sense, it does not render the tabs and it's just a bunch of text. But when I copy the page source and paste it in the html page, and put it in the views folder, everything looks great, so , I assume all the js paths are good.   • LoginView inside FormView control is not databinding on PostBack

That all works. However, once the update is finished (and I call e.Cancel = true), the LoginView control does not databind its children... so they are all blank. The FormView's viewstate is still fine, as all the rest of the controls outside of the LoginView appear fine. I even handle the FormView_DataBound event and a Trace shows that the FormView is being databound on postback. Why then is the LoginView not keeping its ViewState/being databound?     Hi, I've got a user control that I'm loading into a Window dynamically - I wanted to set the Window so that it didn't have a size and then I thought the window to resize accordingly depending on the UserControl. However it dosn't - can anyone assist please? I've made a very basic example - I've cut out the dynamic bits and just put a UserControl in a Window. What do I need to do to get the window to be tight around the UserControl?   • What is all this stuff in the CKEditor folder?

    A while ago I downloaded the latest version (3.1) of the CKEditor text editor. The directory name was ckeditor and I deleted the ckeditor/_source and ckeditor/_samples sub-directories, then I referenced the ckeditor.js file in my html pages, like so : <script type="text/javascript" src="ckeditor/ckeditor.js"></script> this works well. To make config changes, I have been modifying the ckeditor/config.js file. However, as of late, I have been reading various web resources that say 'do not delete the _source' folder and other such ominous messages. What is this _source folder? What is all the stuff at the root of the ckeditor folder? and, What is safe to remove from the folder?

  • Bing maps silverlight control pushpin scaling problems.

    Baiscally my problem is that i've adapted a piece of code found here http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vemapcontroldev/thread/62e70670-f306-4bb7-8684-549979af91c1 which does exactly what I want it to do, that is scale some pushpin images according to the map's zoom level. The only problem is that I've adapted this code to run with the bing maps silverlight control (not virtual earth like in the original example) and now the images scale correclty, but they are repositioned and only reach the desired position when my zoom level is maximum. Any idea why? Help will be greatly appreciated :) Modified code below: var layer = new MapLayer(); map.AddChild(layer); //Sydney layer.AddChild(new Pin { ImageSource = new BitmapImage(new Uri("pin.png", UriKind.Relative)), MapInstance = map }, new Location(-33.86643, 151.2062), PositionMethod.Center); becomes something like layer.AddChild(new Pin { ImageSource = new BitmapImage(new Uri("pin.png", UriKind.Relative)), MapInstance = map }, new Location(-33.92485, 18.43883), PositionOrigin.BottomCenter); I am assuming it has something to do with a different way in which bing maps anchors its UIelements.   • Google Webmasters Tools strange 404 errors referred from same site

    Starting about a month ago, I noticed a sudden increase in 404 errors in Webmasters Tools for one of my sites (over 1400 errors so far). All the errors are being referred from my own site to non existent pages. The 404 error URLs are all of the same format: URL: http://www.helloneighbour.com/save/1347208508000 The number on the end appears to be a timestamp followed by 3 zeros. The referring page, in this case is : Linked from http://www.helloneighbour.com/save/cmw-insurance-insurance-burnaby When I look at the source code of that page, or I use Webmaster tools to view the page as Google sees it, I can't find any link that comes close to what is above. I built the site, and I can't find any place that might be causing these false links either. The server logs (access and error) don't show Google or anyone else trying to access these links. I've marked all these pages as fixed, and waited a couple of weeks, only to find the errors come back again over the last few days. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen anything strange like this, or if someone might have a way for me to debug, replicate this error myself.

Suppose I have this XML as a string: <calles> <calle> <nombre>CALLAO AV.</nombre> <altura>1500</altura> <longitud>-58.3918617027</longitud> <latitud>-34.5916734896</latitud> <barrio>Recoleta</barrio> </calle> </calles> And and have this Type I created to map that XML: public class Ubicacion { public string Latitud { get; set; } public string Longitud { get; set; } public string Nombre { get; set; } public string Altura { get; set; } public string Barrio { get; set; } public Ubicacion() { } } I need to take that XML file and create an object with those values... Does somebody know a quick way to do it? with C#? I have been trying this but is not working at all... When I visit the CCNet dashboard website the project shows up ok, but when I click the Force button I receive this error in the messages column: Failing Tasks : FilteredSourceControl: CheckForModifications If I log into the server as the account which I've specified CCNet should use to connect to the repository, and do an Update on the project by hand (i.e. using SVN.exe or TortoiseSVN) the update works fine. My sourcecontrol section of the CCNet.config file is below. <sourcecontrol type="filtered"> <sourceControlProvider type="svn" autoGetSource="true"> <executable>E:\SVNServer\bin\svn.exe</executable> <trunkUrl> https://bserver.int:4443/trunk </trunkUrl> <workingDirectory>E:\buildserver</workingDirectory> <username>USER</username> <password>PASSWORD</password> </sourceControlProvider> <inclusionFilters> <pathFilter> <pattern>**/*.*</pattern> </pathFilter> </inclusionFilters> </sourcecontrol> Both the cruisecontrol.net website and google seem utterly devoid of any information on this error, other than that it probably relates to the inclusionfilter section in the block above. Can anyone provide any ideas?

    Hi again :) I developed some java program to calculate cosine similarity on the basis of TF*IDF. It worked very well. But there is one problem.... :( for example: If I have following two matrix and I want to calculate cosine similarity it does not work as rows are not same in length doc 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 doc 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 5 2 4 9 if rows and colums are same in length then my program works very well but it does not if rows and columns are not in same length. Any tips ???

  • Mercurial hg clone error - "abort: error: Name or service not known"

    I have installed the latest hg package available for Fedora Linux. However, hg clone reports an error. hg clone http://localmachine001:8000/ repository reports: "abort: error: Name or service not known" localmachine001 is a computer within the local network. I can ping it from my Linux box without any problems. I can also use the same http address and browse the existing code. However, hg clone does not work. If I execute the same command from my Macintosh machine, I can easily clone the repository. Some Internet resources recommend editing .hgrc file, and adding proxy to it: [http_proxy] host=proxy:8080 I have tried that without any success. Also, I assume that proxy is not needed in this case, since the hg server machine is in my local network. Can anyone recommend me what should I do, or how could I track the problem? Thank you in advance.
