• (NOT) NULL for NVARCHAR columns

  Allowing NULL values on a column is normally done to allow the absense of a value to be represented. When using NVARCHAR there is aldready a possibility to have an empty string, without setting the column to NULL. In most cases I cannot see a semantical difference between an NVARCHAR with an empty string and a NULL value for such a column. Setting the column as NOT NULL saves me from having to deal with the possibility of NULL values in the code and it feels better to not have to different representations of "no value" (NULL or an empty string). Will I run into any other problems by setting my NVARCHAR columns to NOT NULL. Performance? Storage size? Anything I've overlooked on the usage of the values in the client code?

  I have a table with one row and two columns- int 'version', datetime 'updated' Is there a Rails ActiveRecord way to get and set the data in these columns? There is no id column. I'm using this table to track versions of queries of other tables. After each query of another table the version column is incremented and the updated column is set with current datetime.

Datatype would be estimated based on the contents of the spreadsheet column. When done, data would be loaded to the table. I have an Excel file of ~200 columns that I want to start normalizing.

  I have a column in my DB that is set with Identity(1,1) and I can't get hibernate annotations to work for it. I get errors when I try to create a new record. In my entity I have the following. @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.IDENTITY, generator="native") @Column(name="SeqNo", unique=true, nullable=false) BigDecimal seqNo; But when I try to add a new record I get the following error. Cannot insert explicit value for identity column in table 'MemberSelectedOptions' when IDENTITY_INSERT is set to OFF. I don't want to set IDENTIY_INSERT to ON because I want the identity column in the db to manage the values.   I have a scalar UDF that I know to be deterministic, however SQL doesn't. Is there a way to declare it as deterministic so that I can then use it in a persisted computed column definition? further clarification: The purpose of this exercise is that I need to harvest out specific values from an XML column on the row. I can't use the value method of the xml column in my computed column definition, but I can use it in a UDF. I know the xpath query in the value method will produce the same output give the same input so while I certainly understand that not all calls to value will be deterministic I want to assert that mine is.

  I have a link that goes like this: $this->Html->link('Welcome', array('controller' => 'users', 'action' => 'add')); I suspect it doesn't work (Firefox says the redirect will never complete), so I did this: $this->Html->link('Welcome', array('controller' => 'users', 'action' => 'add', 'my'=>false)); 'my' is a prefix. I also have 'admin', 'ajax', and 'rss'. So now instead of pointing to /users/add or /my/users/add, the link points to /rss/users/add. The link is in a header, in a layout so I don't know which prefix it will be invoked from. I want to go to /users/add, that is, leave all prefixes altogether. How do I do that in CakePHP? I'm using 1.3 version.

I am wondering why even a single delete statement of this store procedure will cause deadlock if executed by multiple threads at the same time? For the delete statement, Param1 is a column of table FooTable, Param1 is a foreign key of another table (refers to another primary key clustered index column of the other table). There is no index on Param1 itself for table FooTable. • Transparently surround a component with a link in Wicket

  I want to be able to add links on certain items in an ListView. If an items is surrounded by the link or not is up to the code, so its not in the normal page markup. Say i have a markup like this: <div class="column" wicket:id="columnRepeater"> <span wicket:id="column"></span> </div> So essentially, while filling the repeater with a ListView i am able to find a custom renderer for the column component. (not my playingfield). What i want is to add a Link/Ajax Link around the column component. I learned using wicket:border lets you surround additional stuff. Now, the border markup looks like this: <wicket:border> <a wicket:id="link"><wicket:body/></a> </wicket:border> Now, i am a bit puzzled what the Border implementation looks like. Anyone there who can suggest a working java part? I have a couple of "work in progress" solutions but none works. Most questions have to do with usage of component ids. Is the border id = column ? Whats the id of the inner (border body) id then?

I'm looking for a macro implementation for the digital signature algorithm - I don't think one ships with Excel, but is there an addon available? I got this error The newsequentialid() built-in function can only be used in a DEFAULT expression for a column of type 'uniqueidentifier' in a CREATE TABLE or ALTER TABLE statement. It cannot be combined with other operators to form a complex scalar expression. Is there a workaround for this ? Edit1: Changing NEWSEQUENTIALID() to NEWID() in the trigger solves this, but I am indexing this column and using NEWID() would be sub-optimal

I want to rename the column of table at sql server 2005, following query I have run at sql server2005: 1) ALTER TABLE Details RENAME COLUMN AccountID TO UID; but it gives me the error: Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'COLUMN'. 2)I have added one new column in the table by query: ALTER TABLE Details ADD BID uniqueidentifier; and then I want to set the coulmn property to not null . • Alter multiple tables' columns length

  So, we just found out that 254 tables in our Oracle DBMS have one column named "Foo" with the wrong length- Number(10) instead of Number(3). That foo column is a part from the PK of the tables. Those tables have other tables with forigen keys to it. What I did is: backed-up the table with a temp table. Disabled the forigen keys to the table. Disabled the PK with the foo column. Nulled the foo column for all the rows. Restored all the above But now we found out it's not just couple of tables but 254 tables. Is there an easy way, (or at least easier than this) to alter the columns length? P.S. I have DBA permissions.

  I'm a relative rookie at this,so please bear with me... I have 2 tables: OrderDetail and OrderMaster...both have a column named SalesOrder. OrderDetail table has multiple rows per unique SalesOrder. OrderMaster table has one row per unique SalesOrder. OrderDetail has a column named LineType. OrderMaster has a column named OrderStatus. I want to select all records from OrderDetail that have a LineType of "1" AND whose matching SalesOrder line in the OrderMaster table has a OrderStatus column value of "4". In plain English, orders with a Status 4 are open and ready to ship, LineType value of 1 means the Detail Line is a product code. How should this query be structured? It's going into VS 2008 (VB).
