• Linux udev persistent net rule

  I have a Linux system (Slackware Linux 13.0) with two network interfaces. Let's call them NIC0 and NIC1 My goal is to make NIC0 to appear as eth0 in the system. I know this can be achieved via udev rules that map network aliases to MAC addresses of network interfaces. In Slackware Linux the file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules contains such rules. The trickiest part of my problem is that I need to fake the MAC address of NIC0. I know I can dynamically change the MAC addres of a network interface with the command: ifconfig eth0 hw ether <new MAC address> Do you see the problem? This supposes that the network interfaces are already set up. So my question is: If I would have an udev rule for NIC1(the one that shall go up as eth1, with its original MAC address), would it be enough for the system to bring the other network interface (NIC0) as eth0 by default? This way I could change its MAC address later, after the udev machinery completes and the network aliases are brought up.

• Upgrading from MVC 1.0 to MVC2 in Visual Studio 2010 and VS2008.

  With MVC2 officially released, I was involved in a few conversations regarding the feasibility of upgrading existing MVC 1.0 projects to quickly leverage the newly introduced MVC features. Luckily, Microsoft has proactively addressed this question for both Visual Studio 2008 and 2010 and many online resources discussing the upgrade process are a "Bing/Google Search" away. As I will happen to be speaking about MVC2 and Visual Studio 2010 at the Ft Lauderdale ArcSig .Net User Group Meeting on April 20th 2010 (Check http://www.fladotnet.com for more info.), I decided to include a quick demo on upgrading the NerdDinner project (which I consider the "Hello MVC World" project) from MVC 1.0 to MVC2 using Visual studio 2010 to demonstrate how simple the upgrade process is. In the next few lines, I will be briefly touching on upgrading to MVC2 for Visual Studio 2008 then discussing, in more detail, the upgrade process using Visual Studio 2010 while highlighting the advantage of its multi-targeting support. Using Visual Studio 2008 SP1 For upgrading to MVC2 Using VS2008 SP1, a Microsoft White Paper [1] presents two approaches:  1- Using a provided automated upgrade tool, 2-Manually upgrading the project. I personally prefer using the automated tool although it comes with an "AS IS" disclaimer. For those brave souls, or those who end up with no luck using the tool, detailed manual upgrade steps are also provided as a second option. Backing up the project in question is a must regardless of which route one would take to upgrade. Using Visual Studio 2010 Life is much easier for developers who already adopted Visual Studio 2010. Simply opening the MVC 1.0 solution file brings up the upgrade wizard as shown in figures 1, 2, 3 and 4. As we proceed with the upgrade process, the wizard requests confirmation on whether we choose to upgrade our target framework version to .Net 4.0 or keep the existing .Net 3.5 (Figure 5). VS2010 does a good job with multi-targeting where we can still develop .Net 3.5 applications while leveraging all the new bells and whistles that VS2010 brings to the table (Multi-targeting enables us to develop with as early as .Net 2.0 in VS2010) Figure 1 - Open Solution File Using VS2010   Figure 2 - VS2010 Conversion Wizard Figure 3- Ready To Convert To VS2010 Confirmation Screen Figure 4 - VS2010 Solution Conversion Progress Figure 5 - Confirm Target Framework Upgrade In an attempt to make my demonstration realistic, I decided to opt to keep the project targeted to the .Net 3.5 Framework.  After the successful completion of the conversion process,  a quick sanity check revealed that the NerdDinner project is still targeted to the .Net 3.5 framework as shown in figure 6. Inspecting the Web.Config revealed that the MVC DLL version our code compiles against has been successfully upgraded to 2.0 (Figure 7) and hence we should now be able to leverage the newly introduced features in MVC2 and VS2010 with no effort or time invested on modifying existing code. • Gotcha | Installing .net 4.0 and IIS 6

  Just a quick one, seems pretty weird to me. I installed .net 4.0 on an old IIS6 box, ready to deploy a asp.net mvc app targeting .net 4.0.  I thought, which to me seems logical, that I install .net 4.0, setup a new web site, new app pool, set the web site to asp.net 4.0 (other configuration also needed to run MVC on IIS6 here and here) and it would just work. Errr… No.  The page cannot be displayed!  Nothing to do with MVC. • The layout page "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml" could not be found

  I got this error and I can't figure out what is going on. I am positive the _layout.cshtml resides in the shared folder and for the sake of trying things out, I moved to the Home folder and it then told that the Views/Home/_Layout.cshtml couldn't be found there either. So now I'm thinking the problem is in the call for this file for some reason. I'm not going to pretend I know ASP.NET MVC4, so please when you answer, explain it as you would to someone who is not familiar with the system at all. Believe it or not, this error came from tutorial #1 ha ha Here's the code to show that I did code it right: @{ ViewBag.Title = "Home Page"; Layout = "~/Views/Shared/_Layout.cshtml"; } And here is a picture of the location p.s. • Advice on refactoring PHP Project

  I have a small SAS ERP that was written some years ago using PHP. At that time, it didn't use any framework, but the code isn't a mess. Nowadays, the project grows and I’m now working with 3 more programmers. Often, they ask to me why we don’t migrate to a framework such as Laravel. Although I'd love trying Laravel, I’m a small business and I don't have time nor money to stop and spend a whole year building everything from scratch. I need to live and pay the bills. So, I've read a lot about this matter, and I decided that doing a refactoring is the best way to do it. Also, I'm not so sure that a framework will make things easy. Business goals are: Make the code easier to new hired programmers Separate the "view", in order to: release different versions of this product (using the same code), but under different brands and websites at the minimum cost (just changing view) release different versions to fit mobile/tablet. Make different types of this product, selling packages as if they were plugins. Develop custom packages for some costumers (like plugins/addon's that they can buy to put on the main application). Code goals: Introduce best pratices, standards for everyone Try to build my own MVC structure Improve validation of data/forms (today they are mixed in both ajax and classes) Create automated testing routines for quality assurance. My current structure project: class\ extra\ hd\ logs\ public_html\ public_html\includes\ public_html\css|js|images\ class\ There are three types of classes. They are all “autoloaded” with something similar with PSR-0, but I don’t use namespaces. 1. class.Something.php Connects to Database using specific methods. I.e: Costumer-list(); It uses “class.Db.php”, that it’s an abstraction of mysql on every method. 2. class.SomethingProc.php Do things that “join” things that come from “class.Something.php”. Like IF/ELSE, math operations. 3. class.SomethingHTML.php The classes with “HTML” suffix implements only static methods and HTML code only. A real life example: All the programmers need to use $cSomething ($c to class) and $arrSomething (to array). Costumer.php (view) <?php $cCosumter = new Costumer(); $arrCostumer = $cCostumer->list(); echo CostumerHTML::table($arrCostumer); ?> Extra\ Store 3rdparty projects/classes from others, such MPDF, PHPMailer, etc. Hd\ Store user’s files outsite wwwroot dir. Something that I can give to any new programmer at my company and he can go on. This is not totally a mess, but it could be better seeing the new practices. What could I do to separate this as MVC, to have multiple views. Could you give me some tips considering my goals? • IIS 7 and ASP.NET State Service Configuration

  We have 2 web servers load balanced and we wanted to get away from sticky sessions for obvious reasons. Our attempted approach is to use the ASP.NET State service on one of the boxes to store the session state for both. I realize that it's best to have a server dedicated to storing sessions but we don't have the resources for that. I've followed these instructions to no avail. The session still isn't being shared between the two servers. I'm not receiving any errors. I have the same machine key for both servers, and I've set the application ID to a unique value that matches between the two servers. Any suggestions on how I can troubleshoot this issue? Update: I turned on the session state service on my local machine and pointed both servers to the ip address on my local machine and it worked as expected. The session was shared between both servers. This leads me to believe that the problem might be that I'm not using a standalone server as my state service. Perhaps the problem is because I am using the ip address 127.0.0.1 on one server and then using a different ip address on the other server. Unfortunately when I try to use the network ip address as opposed to localhost the connection doesn't seem to work from the host server. Any insight on whether my suspicions are correct would be appreciated.

• ASP.Net Session Timing Out Rapidly

  We have an ASP.Net 3.5 website running on Windows Server 2008 with IIS7. The session timeout period for this site is configured to be 20 minutes - however, it is currently lasting for between 40 and 50 seconds. After researching the problem we investigated several configuration values which could be involved in the timeout period but none of them are set to less than 20 minutes. The areas we look are as follows: web.config system.web/sessionState element (20 minutes). web.config system.web/authentication/forms element (not present, defaults to 30 minutes). Sites/{website}/ASP/Session Properties/Time-out (20 minutes). Application Pools/{appPool}/Advanced Settings/Process Model/Idle Time-out (20 minutes). We've also noted that the CPU is staying around 0% and that RAM usage is flat-lining around 1.07 GB (of 8 GB available) - so there is no performance-based reason for IIS to be recycling the Application Pool as far as we can tell. Are there any settings we've overlooked which could cause the session timeouts to be expiring so quickly? EDIT A couple of additional points: This is not occurring in development, only on the server. The session is not sliding (i.e. if we refresh the page a few times it still times out approximately 40 - 50 seconds after the session was created.

• IIS7ASP.Net 4.0 - 404 errors only for external clients

  recently we moved an ASP.Net 3.5 website to 4.0 (integrated mode) and when we deployed to the clients server (Windows Server 2008 Web edition) we notice that some .aspx pages are serving 404 errors. What is strange is that 1) the pages exist 2) if you browse from the server itself the page is served as normal, only external clients get the 404 3) it's the default 404 error page not the one configured in the web.config 4) it only happens for some .aspx pages, and I've not been able to establish a link between the pages that are not being served externally. We are using a URL rewriter module which I first thought may be at fault but then realised that only some of the failing pages are being rewritten. I've also tested removing the http module and the problem still persists. As everything is working as expected when logged onto the server I was thinking it my be some sort of permission issue, but why would it only affect a few pages? I turned on failed request tracking and the debug files are being generated with the expected 404 error, although at the moment I'm not sure what most of the data means so can't decipher what's going on internally. I'd really appreciate some help with this one.

  Currently I’m working on a brand new .NET Framework v4 Project which is using all the new stuff of the new framework version. So I decided to try out the ASP.NET DataPager once more. It was introduced in previous .NET Versions already. However, at the beginning it only provided Javascript/Postback URLs which were not crawlable [...]...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
