  • When creating a GUI wizard, should all pages/tabs be of the same size? [closed]

    I understand that some libraries would force me to, but my question is general. If I have a set of buttons at the bottom: Back, Next, Cancel?, (other?), then should their location ever change? If the answer is no, then what do I do about pages with little content? Do I stretch things? Place them in the lone upper left corner? According to Steve Krug, it does not make sense to add anything to GUI that does not need to be there. I understand that there are different approaches to wizards - some have tabs, others do not. Some tabs are lined horizontally at the top; others - vertically on the left. Some do not show pages/tabs, and are simply sequences of dialogs. This is probably a must when the wizard is "non-linear", e.g. some earlier choices can result in branching. Either way the problem is the same - sacrifice on the consistency of the "big picture" (outline of the page/tab + location of buttons), or the consistency of details (some tabs might be somewhat packed; others having very little content). A third choice, I suppose is putting extra effort in the content in order to make sure that organizing the content such that it is more or less evenly distributed from page to page. However, this can be difficult to do (say, when the very first tab contains only a choice of three things, and then branches off from there; there are probably other examples), and hard to maintain this balance if any of the content changes later. Can you recommend a good approach? A link to a relevant good blog post or a chapter of a book is also welcome. Let me know if you have questions.

    In my code, I load up an entire folder into a list and then try to get rid of every file in the list except the .mp3 files. import os import re path = '/home/user/mp3/' dirList = os.listdir(path) dirList.sort() i = 0 for names in dirList: match = re.search(r'\.mp3', names) if match: i = i+1 else: dirList.remove(names) print dirList print i After I run the file, the code does get rid of some files in the list but keeps these two especifically: ['00. Various Artists - Indie Rock Playlist October 2008.m3u', '00. Various Artists - Indie Rock Playlist October 2008.pls'] I can't understand what's going on, why are those two specifically escaping my search.

    How do you escape a double quote character inside a MS SQL 'contains' function? SELECT decision FROM table WHERE CONTAINS(decision, '34" AND wide') Normally contains() expects double quotes to surround an exact phrase to match, but I want to search for an actual double quote character. I've tried escaping it with \, `, and even another double quote, but none of that has worked. P.S. I realize a simple example like this could also be done using the LIKE statement, but I need to use the fulltext search function. The query I provided here has been simplified from my actual query for example purposes.

  • SQL Server - Searching string with international characters using LIKE clause

    Hi, I have a field 'Description' which can have product descriptions with any unicode characters. If I search for a description which contains an international character, with a LIKE condition (word searched with does not have the international character) I get the following results: Ex: GEWÜRZTRAMINER is one of the descriptions. When I do: Select * from table where Description LIKE '%GEWURZTRAMINER%', it retrieves the entry. When I do: Select * from table where Description LIKE '%GEWURZ%', the entry is not retrieved. (Note: the search condition does not include the Ü but has a U) Is there a way around this so that I can retrieve with '%GEWURZ%' as well? SQl Server 2008

    I am using the window.location.search parameters (www.mysite.com?page=1) to direct the user to a specific page within the site. However, since those parameters are still in window.location (the browser) reset button continues to re-direct to the same page. I would like the reset button to re-direct to www.mysite.com How do I clear the .search parameters so the (browser) reset button re-directs where I want? Is it done after the page is loaded? or after the (browser) reset button has been clicked?

I have over 40,000 artists in this table. So, I'd like to convert all artists names to search friendly. What is the best way to accomplish this? Not looking for code here, just ideas.     I'm working on Ruby on rails 2.3.4 and I'm trying to develop a Sort feature on my website's search page(its url is /anuncios/buscar). What I tried is to create a "map" on routes file: map.search_filter_relevance "/anuncios/buscar", :controller => 'announcements', :action => 'search_filter_relevance' Then, I wrote this on the view: <%= link_to 'M&Aacute;S RELEVANTES', search_filter_relevance(@announcements) %> And finally, I created a method in the controller, as is specified on the routes' line: def search_filer_relevance raise params.inspect end First of all, as I'm sorting search results, I'd like to keep them in their public variable called @announcements. Please help me do this. An the other thing is that when I click the link I get an error due its trying to access the Show action instead of search_filter_relevance as specified in routes. Why is this happening?

    I ran the following command at linux bash: apt-cache search hex.*(view|edit) My intention was to find any software packages whose name/description contains the pattern 'hex.*(view|edit)'. But among the results I got this: kipi-plugins - image manipulation/handling plugins for KIPI aware programs How could this be in the results list? I didn't see any matching string in this result. Is this a bug of the apt-cache search command? Or do I mis-understand how the regex is used by this command? Many thanks.

The function is called by onKeyUp in the textarea. If the .find is swapped out for a .hiddenDiv the height change is reflected properly.

Like the following example: The input would require the "return" key to be hit for the script to trigger.     I am using dataTables plugin for a table on a page I am working on. Its basically fetching rows through an ajax call and in this ajax call, I send the search params that the user selects and the page number required. I need the Next, Previous, First and Last buttons to also fire the same ajax call, but with different page numbers, as the back-end interceptor depends on the page number. This api call would return total no. of rows(say 1000) belonging for these search params and the rows with the page size( say 50). Is there any way, I can use data table to do this?

    i have a problem at work, where i need to simplify the process how i searrh for logs. I would like to ask for help from experts here. We have different services for every channel. The structure is following: - root/channel_1/service_1/2014-05-21/file_54544654541.xml - root/channel_1/server2_2/2014-05-20/file_74272172.xml - root/channel_1/service_3/2014-05-22/file_45456546.xml - root/channel_2/service_4/2014-05-23/file_78754456.xml - root/channel_2/service_5/2014-05-24/file_546546546.xml my main problem is to find particular string in these xml files. Lets say, i know the channel name but i dont know the service name under which my particular string should be present. Also i know the date. So in search i want to enter the channel name the date and string. The search would be going via all service folders and looking for string only in all xml files under particular date folder and particular channel. any ideas for quickest and easiest solution to achieve this? Either by bash or perl? Any help would be appreciated thanks

It also checks products model number and whether or not it is enabled. This executes in about 1.6 seconds when I run it directly through the phpMyAdmin tool but takes about 3 seconds in total to load in conjunction with the PHP file it is placed in.   • How can I make external script output link to code in Visual Studio?

    I sometimes need to search code for patterns in a way that goes beyond the regex capabilities of Visual Studio (e.g. patterns that depend on what was seen previously in the file or on the contents of other files). So I use Perl to analyze the source and output matching lines, along with the file name and line number. Since this is the exact same format as is produced by the search feature of Visual Studio, I wonder if there is a way to duplicate the functionality where I can double-click on a line and it will display that line in context in Visual Studio. Any ideas?
