• Invoicing vs Quoting or Estimating

  If invoices can be voided, should they be used as quotations? I have an Invoices tables that is created from inventory associated with a Job or Order. I could have a Quotes table as a halfway-house between inventory and invoices, but it feels like I would have duplicate data structures and logic just to handle an "Is this a quote?" bit. From a business perspective, quotes are different from invoices: a quote is sent prior to an undertaking and an invoice is sent once it is complete and payment is due, but how to represent this in my repository and model. What is an elegant way to store and manage quotes & invoices in a database? Edit: indicated Job === Order for this particular instance.

• Partitioning requests in code among several servers

  I have several forum servers (what they are is irrelevant) which stores posts from users and I want to be able to partition requests among these servers. I'm currently leaning towards partitioning them by geographic location. To improve the locality of data, users will be separated into regions e.g. North America, South America and so on. Is there any design pattern on how to implement the function that maps the partioning property to the server, so that this piece of code has high availability and would not become a single point of failure ? f( Region ) -> Server IP

  Hi, I have the following model structure class Authors(db.Model) : nickname = db.StringProperty(required=True) fullname = db.StringProperty(required=True) class Articles(db.Model) : title = db.StringProperty(required=True) body = db.StringProperty(required=True) author = db.ReferenceProperty(Authors, required=True) class Favorites(db.Model) : who = db.ReferenceProperty(Authors, required=True) what = db.ReferenceProperty(Articles, required=True) I'd like to display 10 last articles according to this pattern: article.title, article.body, article.author(nickname), info if this article has been already favorited by the signed in user. I have added a function which I use to get the authors of these articles using only one query (it is described here) But I don't know what to do with the favorites (I'd like to know which of the displayed articles have been favorited by me using less than 10 queries (I want to display 10 articles)). Is it possible?

• Accessing database problem

  Ok, so I've got an SQLiteOpenHelper that prepares and returns a SQLiteDatabase object; this is written singleton-pattern, so the database is opened once and only closed when the Activity closes. From there I have three database wrappers encapsulating the queries (some returning cursors to datasets, some inserting data) used by the Activity. I want to insert data from one View, then have that automatically update in another View on the same Dialogue. I'm writing this on a notepad and testing on the phone (since the emulator crashes the notepad...), so I can't pull up stacktraces atm. So questions: 1) are there limitations to writing to a database, when there are cursors open on the database? 2) Does a Cursor.requery()? call update the ListView with the cursor as a data connector?

• preserving history when using mercurial ontop of clearcase

  I work in a ClearCase shop and CC does a good job of integrating the team's work though our code review process prevents me from using it to track my daily changes. Creating an hg repository on top of my CC view works really well. I can track my changes and easily make backups on the file server, produce diffs for people etc. This is all well and good until I move to a new CC view and have to leave my history behind. I would love to be able to ?pull? my previous history in and have everything that's different in the new view show up as the latest change set.

• Efficient persistent storage for simple id to table of values map for java

  I need to store some data that follows the simple pattern of mapping an "id" to a full table (with multiple rows) of several columns (i.e. some integer values [u, v, w]). The size of one of these tables would be a couple of KB. Basically what I need is to store a persistent cache of some intermediary results. This could quite easily be implemented as simple sql, but there's a couple of problems, namely I need to compress the size of this structure on disk as much as possible. (because of amount of values I'm storing) Also, it's not transactional, I just need to write once and simply read the contents of the entire table, so a relational DB isn't actually a very good fit. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions? For some reason I can't seem to come up with something decent atm. Especially something with an API in java would be nice.

• Why state cannot be part of Presenter in MVP?

  I read http://www.codeproject.com/KB/architecture/MVC_MVP_MVVM_design.aspx and it said: As powerful as they are, both MVC and MVP have their problems. One of them is persistence of the View’s state. For instance, if the Model, being a domain object, does not know anything about the UI, and the View does not implement any business logic, then where would we store the state of the View’s elements such as selected items? Fowler comes up with a solution in the form of a Presentation Model pattern. I wonder why Presenter can't hold View state? It already holds all View logic. As far as I understand, in MVC and MVP the state is kept in View. In PM and MVVM the state is kept in the Presentation Model. Why can't Presenter follow PM in this particular case and contain the state of the view? • Subversion commit failed on Mac OS X with error "no such table: rep_cache"

  I created a subversion repository, imported an empty structure, checked out the repo, added a file to the working copy and tried commiting the working copy with the following commands: svnadmin create mysvn svn import -m "initial empty structure" test/ file:///tmp/mysvn svn co file:///tmp/mysvn mywc svn ci -m "test" The commit failed with the following error: Transmitting file data .svn: Commit failed (details follow): svn: While preparing '/tmp/mywc' for commit svn: no such table: rep_cache I am running Mac OS X 10.6.3 and subversion 1.6.5. Did I miss any steps or Mac specific commands? Thanks for your help.

• How to tell when my batch of EAP calls are completed?

  This is following my question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2607038/c-how-to-consume-web-service-adheres-to-the-event-based-asynchronous-pattern My program is calling the DoStuffAsync() x many times in a batch, hence the callback will get invoked the same number of times upon OnComplete(). Is there a way to find out when my batch is finished such that I can generate a report on the success/failed results? All I can think of is to have a static count variable for x and deduct 1 every time OnComplete() is called, but its kind of silly and error prone I'm afraid. TIA.

  Hi I'm developing an activity that binds to a local service (in onCreate of the activity): bindService(new Intent(this, CommandService.class), svcConn, BIND_AUTO_CREATE); I would like to be able to call methods through the IBinder in my lifecycle methods, but can not be sure that onServiceConnected have been called prior to these. I'm thinking of handling this by adding a queue of sorts in the ServiceConnection implementation, so that the method calls (Command pattern) will be executed once the connection is established. My questions are then: Is this stupid, any better ways? :) Are there any specification for which thread will be used to execute the ServiceConnection callbacks? More to the point, do I need to worry about synchronizing a queue datastructure? I am displaying this data in a table on my View. For the Gender I want to display 'Male' or 'Female', how and where do I manipulate the 1's and 0's? Is it done in the repository where I fetch the data or in the View? For the Active column I want to show a checkBox that will AutoPostBack on selection change and update the Active filed in the Database. How is this done without Ajax or jQuery?

I'm trying to invoke a method with reflection that has a generic return type, like this: public class SomeClass<T> { public List<T> GetStuff(); } I get an instance of SomeClass with a call to a Repository's GetClass<T> generic method. MethodInfo lGetSomeClassMethodInfo = typeof(IRepository) .GetMethod("GetClass") .MakeGenericMethod(typeof(SomeClass<>); object lSomeClassInstance = lGetSomeClassMethodInfo.Invoke( lRepositoryInstance, null); After that, I this is where I try to invoke the GetStuff method: typeof(SomeClass<>).GetMethod("GetStuff").Invoke(lSomeClassInstance, null) I get an exception about the fact that the method has generic arguments. However, I can't use MakeGenericMethod to resolve the return type. Also, if instead of typeof(SomeClass<>) I use lSomeClassInstance.GetType() (which should have resolved types) GetMethod("GetStuff") returns null! UPDATE I have found the solution and will post the answer shortly.

• Why use hashing to create pathnames for large collections of files?

  Hi, I noticed a number of cases where an application or database stored collections of files/blobs using a has to determine the path and filename. I believe the intended outcome is a situation where the path never gets too deep, or the folders ever get too full - too many files (or folders) in a folder making for slower access. EDIT: Examples are often Digital libraries or repositories, though the simplest example I can think of (that can be installed in about 30s) is the Zotero document/citation database. Why do this? EDIT: thanks Mat for the answer - does this technique of using a hash to create a file path have a name? Is it a pattern? • creative way for implementing Data object with its corresponding business logic class in java

  I have a class that need to be serialized (for both persistentcy and client-server communication) for simplicity's sake let's call the classes Business a BusinessData and I prefix for their Interfaces. All the getter and setter are delegated from Business class to BusinessData class. I thought about implementing IBusinessData interface that will contain all the getter and setters and IBusiness interface that will extend it. I can either make Business extend BuisnessData so I will not need to implement all getter and setter delegates, or make some abstract class ForwardingBusinessData that will only delegate getter and setters. Any of the above option I lose my hierarchy freedom, do any of you have any creative solutions for this problem... I also reviewed DAO pattern: http://java.sun.com/blueprints/patterns/DAO.html

  Once the singleton pattern is understood, writing subsequent singleton classes in C# is a brainless exercise. I would hope that the framework would help you by providing an interface or a base class to do that.   I've got a string like this: #################### Section One #################### Data A Data B #################### Section Two #################### Data C Data D etc. I want to parse it into something like: $arr( 'Section One' => array('Data A', 'Data B'), 'Section Two' => array('Data C', 'Data D') ) At first I tried this: $sections = preg_split("/(\r?\n)(\r?\n)#/", $file_content); The problem is, the file isn't perfectly clean: sometimes there are different numbers of blank lines between the sections, or blank spaces between data rows. The section head pattern itself seems to be relatively consistent: #################### Section Title #################### The number of #'s is probably consistent, but I don't want to count on it. The white space on the title line is pretty random. Once I have it split into sections, I think it'll be pretty straightforward, but any help writing a killer reg ex to get it there would be appreciated. (Or if there's a better approach than reg ex...)

  I have a project "A" that is a Git repository. I would like to be able to make multiple copies of project A (B and C), and modify them for clients. "A" is the master so sometimes when I do new functionality i would like to be able to pull them into B or C. But some commits should just stay in A and only be used if making a new clone. How do I do that with Git? That is: how to copy A? (Clone?) how to get specific commits into B and C? Please keep in mind that this all happening locally - not on GitHub. I use OS X.

  Hi I have implemented the Observer Pattern with lazy load. The class that requests the data from the database is a singleton class. Now I am able to load the data from one database (located in one datacenter) very easily. But I need to get the data from other data centers too and display on the same UI. I can somehow pass the address of second data center and fetch the data from there also. But once I will get the data from second data center, it will be added to earlier list only. So later it will be thought for me to distinguish between the data. So I thought of attaching a property with the result set, so that while displaying the output I can show the data for both the data centers separately but on the same UI. I thought of attached property as an option where I can attach the data center name with the list of the data obtained. How is it possible to do in C#? Thanks Manas

  Is it possible to listen to relation database update? For example, my web app want to send data update to client through Comet technology. I can have the program to poll the database periodically, but that would not be performant and scalable. If app can hood to a "event handler" of database, then app can get notification every time given database table data is updated. This sounds more promising, but I didn't find any concrete example for it. This is listener pattern. Does common relational database support such feature?

• Is it possible to have Ant print out the classpath for a particular target? If so, how?

  I'm trying to get a target to build that has quite a long list of <pathelement location="${xxx}"/> and <path refid="foo.class.path"/> elements in its <path id="bar.class.path"> element (in the build.xml file). I keep getting "package com.somecompany.somepackage does not exist" errors, and I'm having a hard time chasing down these packages and making sure I've synced them from our repository. I'm new to this team so I'm unfamiliar with the build, but I would prefer to figure this out myself if possible (so I don't bother the other very busy team members). I have very limited experience with Ant. I think it would save me quite a bit of time if I could have Ant print out the classpath for the target I'm trying to build.

• Is it ok to put any existing open-source project into github?

  This question is more about Open-Source etiquette, and the new approach that the likes of github and gitorious gives to collaboration and source ownership. Can you just take any Open-Source project from somewhere else (e.g SourceForge, with a clear project team and community) and put it into your own github repository, provided that you respect the terms of the original license? And if yes, do you keep your version under the same name, or change it? I somehow have this nagging feeling that this is rude, and yet it is open-source after all...
