• Need help/guidance about creating a desktop application with gui

  I'm planning to do an Desktop application using Python, to learn some Desktop concepts. I'm going to use GTK or Qt, I still haven't decided which one. Fact is: I would like to create an application with the possibility to be called from command line, AND using a GUI. So it would be useful for cmd fans, and GUI users as well. It would be interesting to create a web interface too in the future, so it could be run in a server somewhere using an html interface created with a template language. I'm thinking about two approaches: - Creating a "model" with a simple interface which is called from a desktop/web implementation; - Creating a "model" with an html interface, and embeb a browser component so I could reuse all the code in both desktop/web scenarios. My question is: which exactly concepts are involved in this project? What advantages/disadvantages each approach has? Are they possible? By naming "interface", I'm planning to just do some interfaces.py files with def calls. Is this a bad approach? I would like to know some book recommendations, or resources to both options - or source code from projects which share the same GUI/cmd/web goals I'm after. Thanks in advance!

• Creating serializeable unique compile-time identifiers for arbitrary UDT's.

  I would like a generic way to create unique compile-time identifiers for any C++ user defined types. for example: unique_id<my_type>::value == 0 // true unique_id<other_type>::value == 1 // true I've managed to implement something like this using preprocessor meta programming, the problem is, serialization is not consistent. For instance if the class template unique_id is instantiated with other_type first, then any serialization in previous revisions of my program will be invalidated. I've searched for solutions to this problem, and found several ways to implement this with non-consistent serialization if the unique values are compile-time constants. If RTTI or similar methods, like boost::sp_typeinfo are used, then the unique values are obviously not compile-time constants and extra overhead is present. An ad-hoc solution to this problem would be, instantiating all of the unique_id's in a separate header in the correct order, but this causes additional maintenance and boilerplate code, which is not different than using an enum unique_id{my_type, other_type};. A good solution to this problem would be using user-defined literals, unfortunately, as far as I know, no compiler supports them at this moment. The syntax would be 'my_type'_id; 'other_type'_id; with udl's. I'm hoping somebody knows a trick that allows implementing serialize-able unique identifiers in C++ with the current standard (C++03/C++0x), I would be happy if it works with the latest stable MSVC and GNU-G++ compilers, although I expect if there is a solution, it's not portable.

• Event Dispatching, void pointer and alternatives

  i have my event dispatching / handling functionality working fine, but there is one issue that i need to resolve. Long story short, here are the details. // The event structure struct tEventMessage { // Type of the event int Type; // (void*) Allows those to be casted into per-Type objects void *pArgument1; void *pArgument2; }; I am sending events from different modules in my engine by using the above structure, which requires a pointer to an argument. All messages are queued, and then dispatched on the next ::Tick(). It works fine, untill i try to send something that doesn't exist in next ::Tick, for example: When a mouse click is being handled, it calculates the click coordinates in world space. • WPF binding comboboxes to parent- child model

  I've got a model with a few tiers in it - something along the lines of ... Company Employees Phone numbers So I've got a ListBox showing all the companys in the model. Each ListBoxItem then contains two comboboxes ... one for employees, one for phone numbers. I can successfully get the employee combo to bind correctly and show the right people, but I'd like the phone combo to show the numbers for the selected employee. • Custom progress bar label text via binding

  I was playing with progress bar customization in Silverlight application. What I want to reach is to have progress bar label to show current its state in the following format: "Value / Maximum". So, user will see what is the current value, and what is the maximum possible value. It does work properly, if it is written like above. However, I also need to provide ConverterParameter for Convertor, but not sure how to make it. When I write like this: , ConvertParameter={Binding Maximum}, it shows error on start, that Text attribute is not found in TextBlock. I was also trying to set DataContext as {RelativeSource Self}, but then it didn't displays error that DataContext attribute is not found. How to make the described progress bar label properly?

• How can I change jtable height at runtime

  I hava a JFrame with multiple JPanels of similar width aligned one below other. I use one of these JPanels to display a JTable which is the last JPanel of the lot. This JPanel has a JScrollpane as a child component. This is where I try to add my table dynamically. Initial height of this JScrollpane is set to 40. I designed above template using Netbeans 6.8 Now I'm trying to add the table to the JPanel. When a button is pressed below code snippet is called. The class which includes this code extends javax.swing.JFrame class. I am expecting below code would adjust table height according to the row count and display the table.   Is there a way to code a write-only reference to an object? • C++ new memory allocation fragmentation

  I was trying to look at the behavior of the new allocator and why it doesn't place data contiguously. Most allocations were a fixed length from the last, sometimes there were odd jumps from one available block to another. sizeof(char) : 1 Average Jump: 64 bytes sizeof(int): 4 Average Jump: 16 sizeof(ci): 8 (int has to be placed on a 4 byte align) Average Jump: 9 Can anyone explain why the allocator is fragmenting memory like this? Also why is the jump for char so much larger then ints and a structure that contains both an int and char.

• Codeigniter PHP - loading a view at an anchor point

  I have a form at the bottom of a long page, if a user fills out the form but it doesn't validate the page is reloaded in the typical codeigniter fashion: $this->load->view('template',$data); however because the form is way down at the bottom of the page I need the page to load down there like you do with HTML anchors. Does anyone know how to do this in codeigniter? I can't use the codeigniter redirect(); function because it loses the object and the validation errors are gone. Other frameworks I've used like Yii you can call the redirect function like: $this->redirect(); which solves the problem because you keep the object. I've tried using: $this->index() within the controller which works fine as a redirect but the validation errors are in another method which is where the current page is loaded from: $this->item($labs) but when I use this it get stuck in a loop Any ideas? I've seen this question a lot on the net but no clear answers. I'm researching using codeigniter "flash data" but think it's a bit overkill. cheers.

• Where to turn upon realizing I can't program my way out of a paper bag?

  I have no job and just enough money to get by until April or so. While looking for work, I figured I might as well go through with a pet project, a browser based card game. Make it nice and free, collect donations and maybe earn enough for a movie ticket to escape reality for a while. I have dabbled in web development a bit. I can make simple stuff happen with JS/PHP if I follow tutorials. I designed my own art blog's template - http://luminarious.tumblr.com. I can visualise the game working in my head, flowcharts and everything. But then I tried to go deeper with Javascript and almost had an aneurysm before understanding what a closure is. Wether I suck at learning, have ADD or fail epically at productivity, I have not got much done. Coming up with ideas, screen mock-ups and so forth was very enjoyable, but actual implementation.. not so much. In fact, I cry a bit every time I think about the time someone competent could have finished this in. I'd like to excuse myself with my ENTP personality type, but that hardly solves anything. Rather, I'd like to know to get from A (bunch of ideas with little semblance to a web app) to B (something to proudly show others) while being unable to pay anyone? Are there any secret techniques for learning? Is there any way to get mentoring or code review? Is there anyone with too much free time willing to code for me? How to trust someone to not steal my code when I ask for assistance? Is there anything I should have asked instead of any of those?

• Nginx - Treats PHP as binary

  We are running Nginx+FastCgi as the backend for our Drupal site. Everything seems to work like fine, except for this one url. http:///sites/all/modules/tinymce/tinymce/jscripts/tiny_mce/plugins/smimage/index.php (We use TinyMCE module in Drupal, and the url above is invoked when user tries to upload an image) When we were using Apache, everything was working fine. However, nginx treats that above url Binary and tries to Download it. (We've verified that the file pointed out by the url is a valid PHP file) Any idea what could be wrong here? I think it's something to do with the NGINX configuration, but not entirely sure what that is. Any help is greatly appreciated.   I've got a working callback system that uses boost::signal. I'm extending it into a more flexible and efficient callback manager which uses a vector of shared_ptr's to my signals.   Are there any rules / guidelines for DATA form XLS sheets to be inserted into SQL- DB? I have a group of Excel templates in 2005.Each concerned cell in Excel template is named. When Excel sheets are filled, saved and submitted , the values are transferred to the database. Excel sheets have names for various cells that are to b e filled by the user EX:- for the total number of Milk in the Beginning a given month , there is an Excel Cell Named "mtsBpiPTR180" Total number of Milk in the Ending a given month , there is an Excel Cell Named **"mtsEpiPTR180"** I have added 2 new cells , named "mtsBpiPTR180PA" and "mtsEpiPTR180PA". Now I try to upload the Excel File. But I AM UNABLE TO SEE MY FILLED DATA FROM "mtsBpiPTR180PA" and "mtsEpiPTR180PA" INTO THE RELATED DB/table. The above 2 are empty in the DB/table, even though I have filled them and successfully filed the Excel sheets Now no matter how much I search in the DB/stored procs i am unable to the ACTUAL STORED PROC or how the Data form Excel sheet is inserted into Tables WHERE DATA FROM XLS is inserted into DB. So was wondering:- Are there any rules / guidelines for DATA form XLS sheets to be inserted into SQL- DB?

• Dynamic content in a Gridview

  I have a gridview with couple of columns,I want to achieve the following: If user is NOT authorized display normal columns. If user IS authorized: set mouseover event for first column text and display some buttons (that are not available for NOT authorized users) in a second column when user hover over(using javascript) the first column. I am have 2 difficulties: The first one where and when should I create the buttons? I have 2 options, I can create those button on design time, in gridviews template and just set Visible value to false and then in codebehind set it to true if user is authorized. The second option would be creating this buttons dynamically in gridview_RowCreated event (or any other event) if user is authorized. The Second difficulty is setting the javascript event to show the buttons, the event should be added only if user is authorized! Note that event and buttons should have some kind of id match for Javascript function to know what should it hide/unhide when event is triggered. What should I do, what is the best practice? I know this is a long question, but please try to help :)

  Is there any standards guidance on how to style field labels next to form fields in windows phone 7 silverlight applications? For example, let's say I have a StackPanel with the TextBlock label and a TextBox for data entry. Currently I am using the default TextBlock Margin included in the PhoneTextSubtleStyle ("12,0,12,0"), and using a Margin of "0,-12,0,0" to push the TextBox up closer to the label: <StackPanel HorizontalAlignment="Left"> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" Text="Name" Style="{StaticResource PhoneTextSubtleStyle}" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding ItemName, Mode=TwoWay}" TextChanged="TextBox_TextChanged" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="433" Margin="0,-12,0,0" /> </StackPanel> Note that the TextBox seems to have some internal padding of 12 pixels to the left and right, so that the TextBlock label and the TextBox control visually line up perfectly on the left. The problem is, I see existing apps with widely varying conventions for field label styling. Some do not do the negative margin adjustment, like I have above. Some don't. Some appear to override the label TextBlock Margin so that it is indented an additional 12 pixels on the left (i.e. "24,0,12,0" instead of the default "12,0,12,0"). Some apps put the labels to the left of the fields themselves (I hate that). Is there some standard design guidance on field labels in Windows Phone 7? I read through the design template PDF and could only determine that the field labels should be upper case on the first word (preferably only one word labels), and should NOT have a colon at the end. I didn't see anything with regards to margins or alignment between the label and the field.

Lets say i have some formatted text containing tables, colors, sizes, etc. Now I'd like to copy/paste this content into an Outlook message object.I'm used to the interop stuff, i just have no idea how to copy/paste this correctly. • Domain model for an online WYSYWG webpage generator / runtime

  Hi all, I'm using C#, MVC, NHibernate and StructureMap as my IoC container, and need some ideas regarding my domain model. The application I'm working has two parts: an Authoring part and a Runtime part. The idea is to allow the user to create a webpage in Authoring (mostly a form actually) by choosing from a set of predefined controls. That webpage will be later used as a form in a call center environment (Runtime part), or may be used in an intranet portal, etc. Basically something similar to what a CMS would do. The difference is, of course, that the webpage/form the author generates will be used and fulfilled in runtime, and that authros should be able to freely create the webpage they want without limitations. I have a draft working model that allows a RunController to iterate over the ScriptPage (my class for the "generated webpage") Controls collection and uses partial views to render each of them. Works kind of fine. Basically I have a common ScriptControl class, and then I can create for example a TextInputControl or a DropDownControl by inheriting from that base class. I can also figure out the Authoring part of the app, although that will surely be fun in itself for sure. :) The biggest problem I have now is persistance. In order to be flexible, I want to be able to add more controls, and template controls (think of an Address composite control) in sepparate DLLs, so I think having a relational model that handles very possible control is not the way to go. My current thinking is using a kind of ObjectStore: binary-serializing the ScriptPage object that contains the List collection and deserializing at Runtime, but I'm not sure how good will it work with NHibernate and how good the performance will be. Serializing a small "page" with 10 controls results in 7964 bytes, for example. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance, excuse the length. ;)

• Why am I needing to click twice on a WPF listbox item in order to fire a command?

  Hi, I'm trying to make a standard WPF listbox be dynamically filled, and for each item in the list box to launch a command when clicked. Currently I have a working listbox, which can be filled and each item will fire the correct command, but in order to fire the command I have to click the list item twice. i.e, Click once to select the item, then click on the actual text to fire the command. As the list is dynamically created, I had to create a data template for the list items: <ListBox.ItemTemplate> <DataTemplate> <TextBlock Margin="4,2,4,2"> <Hyperlink TextDecorations="None" Command="MyCommands:CommandsRegistry.OpenPanel"> <TextBlock Text="{Binding}" Margin="4,2,4,2"/> </Hyperlink> </TextBlock> </DataTemplate> </ListBox.ItemTemplate> Basically, how do I remove the need to click twice? I have tried to use event triggers to fire the click event on the hyperlink element when the list box item is selected, but I can't get it to work. Or, is there a better approach to dynamically fill a listbox and attach commands to each list item? Thanks

  What is the best way to achieve cross-browser(ff,ie6,chrome,opera,safari) curved corners on a div. • View Source and Chrome Developer Tools showing different output

  I have a page located here. Viewing it in Chrome and Firefox show a really small h1 title, and also it changes color as if it is a link. The template that generates everything looks exactly how it should be. When diagnosing the issue, the relevant section of code looks like this when I go to view source: <div class="page-heading"> <h1>Title Here</h1> </div> However, when I go to view it in Chrome's Developer tools, it is throwing in extraneous malformed anchor tags, which is obviously causing the hovering behavior. This is what it looks like to the dev tools: <div class="page-heading"> <h1> <a style="font-family: arial; font-size: 9px" <="" a="">Title Here</a> </h1> </div> In addition, when viewing a local copy of the site, the output shown in the dev tools is the same as viewing the source and they both render correctly locally. Oddly enough, all version of IE render it correctly. The current version of both Chrome and Firefox both render it weirdly. Initially I thought it may be a user agent stylesheet problem, but if anything the CSS is fine, it's the HTML that is malformed.
