  • How do I reinstall/enable snapper?

    I had errors in my root filesystem (btrfs) so I recreated it from a backup but now, snapper doesn't work anymore: # /usr/bin/snapper -v -v -v -v create --description test IO Error. # snapper -v delete-config Deleting config failed (deleting snapshot failed). # snapper create-config / Creating config failed (subvolume already covered). # snapper -c root create-config / Creating config failed (subvolume already covered). # snapper list Type | # | Pre # | Date | User | Cleanup | Description | Userdata -------+---+-------+------+------+---------+-------------+--------- single | 0 | | | root | | current | I also tries to reinstall/remove and install the package snapper but without any luck.   • How do I compile mercurial 1.5.2 on debian?

    I downloaded the files for Mercurial 1.5.2 from http://packages.debian.org/sid/mercurial (mercurial_1.5.2-1.debian.tar.gz, mercurial_1.5.2-1.dsc and mercurial_1.5.2.orig.tar.gz). How do I get a .deb package out of these? I tried to follow the instructions at http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/ch-build.en.html but they don't work. I tried to unpack the two archives and run dpkg-buildpackage or debian/rules build but that fails with: dh --with quilt clean dh_testdir debian/rules override_dh_auto_clean make[1]: Entering directory `/home/user/packages/mercurial-deb' cp -a mercurial/__version__.py mercurial/__version__.py.save cp: cannot stat `mercurial/__version__.py': No such file or directory make[1]: *** [override_dh_auto_clean] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/user/packages/mercurial-deb' make: *** [clean] Error 2 That's because the directory mercurial is inside mercurial_1.5.2/. Why doesn't the build script cd into the right place? If I try ../debian/rules build, I get dh --with quilt build dh: cannot read debian/control: No such file or directory sigh How do I compile a package for debian???

  • ldapsearch and vcard creation

    I'm using openldap on Mac OS X Server 10.6 and need to generate a vcard for all the users in a given group. By using the ldapsearch I can list all the memberUid's for all users in that group. I found a perl script (Advanced LDAP Search or ALS) that was written by someone that will generate the vcard easily. ALS can be found here http://www.ldapman.org/tools/als.gz So what I need to do is create a wrapper script (in python or perl) that will effectively loop through the memberUid's and run the ALS command to create the vcard and append it to the file. This command provides the memberUid's: ldapsearch -x -b 'dc=ldap,dc=server,dc=com' '(cn=testgroup)' Then running ALS gives the vcard: als -b dc=ldap,dc=server,dc=com -V uid=aaronh > vcardlist.vcf If it's easier to do this using Perl since ALS is already using it that would be fine.   • Does an unmanaged 4/8-port GBit Ethernet switch with a GBIC port exist?

    I'm looking for a simple unmanaged switch with 4-8 GBit Ethernet ports and a fiber port (either as a GBIC slot or pre-installed with a 1000BASE-SX port). Does something like that exist? [EDIT] I want to connect to places in my home without drilling large holes though the floors. Therefore, I'm looking for a cheap way to connect two GBit switches via fiber. I tried with a media converter (GBit <- multimode fiber) but that costs about 50% throughput. So I was hoping that there is a cheap, small GBit switch which has a GBIC slot). All I found so far are very expensive managed switches with 12 or 24 ports for industry use.

    I thought that sort would sort common prefixes together but that doesn't always happen. Why is that? I'm not specifying any option to ignore non-alphabetic characters or anything. Just sort dict > out. My version of sort comes from coreutils 8.5-1ubuntu3.

    I just got my new computer with a much bigger harddisk. I think I copied all important files over but just to be sure, I'd like to keep a disk image of my old disk. To save space, I'd like to compress it but I didn't find an option to mount a compressed image. My goals: Result must be easy to access No need to decompress the whole thing before I can access anything Files should be quick to locate - no TAR/CPIO archive Necessary space should be less than just copying the files over So ideally, I'm looking for a read-only, compressed file system which I can create in a file and which grows automatically.

  • Red and blue are swapped on Youtube

    Since Sunday (April 1st), red and blue are sometimes swapped when I watch videos on YouTube. Examples are "Peeling Apple Like A Boss" (blue arms and apple) or, to my dismay, the famous Red vs. Blue series (like this video) which sucks. Here is a screenshot of the RvB episode at 1:28. Vimeo is OK, other web video services are OK, only most YouTube videos are affected ... well, all that I could find so far. This video looks OK in Firefox but it's broken in Chrome. The episode of RvB looks wrong in both browsers. Local videos look file. What could be causing this?

  • Issue with mysql backup in cron

    I'm just trying to perform a mysqldump and have it scheduled. I'm using RHEL 5 and have added it to the crontab as shown below: 22 13 * * * root mysqldump --user=root --password=12345 mysqldb /var/backups/mysqldbdate +%d%m.sql The .sql file never ended up in the backups folder. I even attempted to run this command line and it worked fine which tells me its something to do with the cron. Furthermore, I added a simple comand like "ls" and the output to the same directory and it worked fine. Any ideas? Thanks, Aaron

  • Find&Replace using Python - Binary file

    Hello, I'm attempting to do a "find and replace" in a file on a Mac OS X computer. Although it appears to work correctly. It seems that the file is somehow altered. The text editor that I use (Text Wrangler) is unable to even open the file once this is completed. Here is the code as I have it: import fileinput for line in fileinput.FileInput("testfile.txt",inplace=1): line = line.replace("newhost",host) print line, When I view the file from the terminal, it does say "testfile" may be a binary file. See it anyway? Is there a chance that this replace is corrupting the file? Do I have another option for this to work? I really appreciate the help.   • In 2011, what are the reasons to stick with plain text mails?

    People entering college today have never known a world without an Internet. HTML was invented 1980, that's more than thirty years ago or 1.5 generations. But plain text mails are still common despite all their problems: Encoding issues Wrapped code segments No links No way to use the "a picture says more than a thousand words" lore Most of the security risks are now handled by the underlying browser engine and smart settings like: Don't allow JavaScript in mails Don't execute attachments Don't download external resources (like web bugs) On top of that, only very few people still read mail only in command line tools like Mutt. Knowing Mutt myself, I'm pretty sure you can configure it to display HTML mail with, say, w3m. On top of that, most HTML mail capable clients send two versions of the mail (pure text with an HTML attachment). I'm not sure if there are any people left on the planet which still use a 56kbit modem to access their mail accounts. So what reasons are left to stick with plain text mails in 2011?

  • After .load() Reset Textbox with User Entered Value using JavaScript and jQuery

    My function below calls a partial view after a user enters a filter-by string into the text box '#DocId'. When the user is done typing, the partial view is displayed with filtered data. Since my textbox needs to be in the partial view, when user is done entering a filter-by string and is shown the filtered data, the textbox is reset and the user entered data is lost. How can I set the value of the textbox back to the user entered string after the partial view is displayed?   • How to find the process(es) which are hogging the machine

    Scenario: All of a sudden, my computer feels sluggish. Mouse moves but windows take ages to open, etc. uptime says the load is 7.69 and raising. What is the fastest way to find out which process(es) are the cause of the load? Now, "top" and similar tools isn't the answer because they either show CPU or memory usage but not both at the same time. What I need is the single command which I might be able to type as it happens - something that will figure out any of System is trying to swap 8GB of RAM to disk because process X ... or process X seeks all over the disk or process X uses 400% CPU" So what I'm looking for is iostat, htop/atop and similar tools run into one with an output like this: 1235 cp - Disk trashing 87 chrome - Uses 2&nbsp;GB of RAM 137 nfs_bench - Uses 95% of the network bandwidth I don't want a tool that gives me some numbers which I can analyze but a tool that tells me exactly which process causes the current load. Assume that the user in front of the keyboard barely knows how to write "process", but the user is quickly overwhelmed when it comes to "resident size", "virtual memory" or "process life cycle". My argument goes like this: A user notices a problem. There can be thousands of reasons ... well, almost :-) The user wants to know the source of the problem. The current solutions give me lots of numbers, and I need to know what these numbers mean. What I'm looking for is a meta tool. 99% of the data is irrelevant to the problem. So what the tool should do is look for processes which hog some resource and list only those along with "this process needs a lot of CPU, this produces many IRQs, this process allocates a lot of RAM (and it's still growing)". This will be a relatively short list. It will be much more simple for someone new to this to locate the culprit from this list than from the output of, say, htop which gives me about 5000 numbers but requires me to fold multi-threaded processes myself (I have 50 lines which say VIRT 2750M but only 16 GB of RAM - the machine ought to swap itself to death but of course, this is a misinterpretation of the data that can happen quickly).

    I'm trying to add a custom filter to my RadGrid. I have a column, vendNum, which I want to allow users to filter on multiple vendNums with a comma-separated list. Basically, I want the same functionality as an "in" statement in SQL (where vendNum in (X,Y,Z)).   • UIView Animation animates position but not width

    Hi there, I'm trying to transform a UISearchBar, like in Mobile Safari: touch in the search field and it grows while the location field shrinks. My current animation to alter the width and position of the search field only animates the position: just before it slides to the right place, it simply snaps out to the right width.   • Refresh table after using jQuery .append()

    The following code gets a JSON object and then spits its contents out into a <table>. The first time I do it I get my JSON content just fine. However, when I refresh, the refreshed data is stuck onto the bottom of my table. How do I refresh the data to show the new data only?   • Python requests SSL version

    I am using the python requests module on Ubuntu 13.04. I keep getting the error: requests.exceptions.SSLError: [Errno 1] _ssl.c:504: error:14077410:SSL routines:SSL23_GET_SERVER_HELLO:sslv3 alert handshake failure When I use curl, it fails by default but succeeds with the -3 option. curl https://username:Password@helloworldurl -3 This leads me to believe that it is the SSL version, which I found may be badly supported on ubuntu while searching the error. Sooo. How do I change or check the SSL version using python preferably with requests. Note: the url is private and cannot be given out. Sorry.

    Right off the bat, Oracle's Senior Vice President, Server Technologies Development made his purpose very clear: demonstrate how the elements of the Oracle product stack are evolving (and integrating) together. There are some great details about the new functionality of each Oracle application line and how the different products sync and interact. The lifecycle charts in Kurian's presentation illustrate how data can flow from an Oracle Demantra into Oracle E-Business Suite and back out to an Oracle Agile system to support value chain planning. With so many products at play in the enterprise, Kurian shows that if you trust that your systems can work together, IT strategy becoming much more about managing business process than managing software product.

    Yesterday, I had the amazing opportunity to fly along with Sean D. Tucker and Team Oracle. Leaving from the San Carols airport, we did a 30 minute flight over the Pacific just south of the coastal town of Half Moon Bay. In that half hour, I rode through a massive 4G loop, survived a crushing hammerhead, and took control of the plane to perform a basic wing over (you can learn what the heck I'm talking about by visiting this website).
