  This has come up in conversations more than once in the past little while - recently on twitter I made the casual comment that later this year, SQL Server 2008 will be "two versions old."   Well, surely at least partly in response to the CU6 mess I reported earlier today , and partly because they were due, Microsoft has released new cumulative updates that contain - among other things - updated code that avoids the symptom introduced with earlier updates (though this regression fix doesn't seem to appear in the KB articles - unless by "corruption" they meant ridiculous size increase).   Today on the twitter hash tag #sqlhelp, @leenux_tux asked: How can I figure out the percentage of fields that don't have data ? After further clarification, it turns out he is after what proportion of columns are NULL. Some folks suggested using a data profiling task in SSIS .   You can download the Service Pack 2 CTP from the following URL: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29848 The build # is 10.50.3720. This service pack contains all of the fixes from Service Pack 1 & Cumulative Updates 1 through 5, and a couple of other minor fixes (a couple of SSRS bugs and a bug about an ALTER TABLE batch not being cached correctly). • Two BULK INSERT issues I worked around recently

  Since I am still afraid of SSIS, and because I am dealing mostly with CSV files and table structures that are relatively simple and require only one of the three letters in the acronym "ETL," I find myself using BULK INSERT a lot. • Ola Hallengren adds STATISTICS support to his solution

  Last week, Ola published a very useful update to his Backup, Integrity Check and Index Optimization scripts : the solution now supports updating statistics. There are several options, such as only updating when the data has been modified and using the RESAMPLE and NORECOMPUTE options. • More info: a "stand-alone" installer for Management Studio Express 2008

  Last February, I blogged about something I was initially very happy about: a stand-alone installer for Management Studio Express (SSMSE) 2008 . Now users could allegedly download a much smaller installer, and only install the client tools without having to install an instance of SQL Server Express. While the latter is true, the former remains a pipe dream.
