• RESTful WCF Data Service Authentication

  Hi, I'd like to implement a REST api to an existing ASP.NET MVC website. I've managed to set up WCF Data services so that I can browse my data, but now the question is how to handle authentication. Right now the data service is secured via the site's built in forms authentication, and that's ok when accessing the service from AJAX forms. However, It's not ideal for a RESTful api. What I would like as an alternative to forms authentication is for the users to simply embed the user name and password into the url to the web service or as request parameters. For example, if my web service is usually accessible as http://localhost:1234/api.svc I'd like to be able to access it using the url http://localhost:1234/api.svc/{login}/{password} So, my questions are as follows: Is this a sane approach? If yes, how can I implement this? It seems trivial redirecting GET requests so that the login and password are attached as GET parameters. I also know how to inspect the http context and use those parameters to filter the results. But I am not sure if / how the same approach could be applied to POST, PUT and DELETE requests. • How should I write Jquery Mobile app for browsers with and without javascript support?

  Hi, I'm trying to wrap my head around jQuery Mobile. My aim is to build a very fast application with a look and feel as close as possible to a native app (at least for modern devices). I understand there are two ways of navigating between pages: Loading each page as a separate page and linking to other pages with regular html anchors. Putting all (or many) pages on one single web page and navigating between them by means of javascript ($.mobile.changePage (method) and similar api functions. The first approach should work on all browsers, but performs quite poorly since there is a delay between each page transition. The second looks like it should be much faster, so I would definitely prefer this approach. But how would that work for mobile device browsers without javascript support? It certainly seems to violate jQuery Mobile's aim to provide a gracefully degraded experience for C-grade browsers. It looks to me like I need to implement my app twice, once optimized for browsers with javascript support, once for browsers without? Using may be another option, but that looks even more messy. What's the recommended way to approach this dilemma? Is there anything I have not noticed? Thanks, Adrian

• How can I capture Rake output when invoked from with a Ruby script?

  I am writing a web-based dev-console for Rails development. In one of my controller actions, I am calling Rake, but I am unable to capture any of the output that Rake generates. For example, here is some sample code, from the controller: require 'rake' require 'rake/rdoctask' require 'rake/testtask' require 'tasks/rails' require 'stringio' ... def show_routes @results = capture_stdout { Rake.tasks['routes'].invoke } # @results is nil -- the capture_stdout doesn't catpure anything that Rake generates end def capture_stdout s = StringIO.new $stdout = s yield s.string ensure $stdout = STDOUT end Does anybody know why I can't capture the Rake output? I've tried going through the Rake source, and I can't see where it fires a new process or anything, so I think I ought to be able to do this. Many thanks! Adrian I have since discovered the correct way to call Rake from inside Ruby that works much better: Rake.application['db:migrate:redo'].reenable Rake.application['db:migrate:redo'].invoke Strangely, some rake tasks work perfectly now (routes), some capture the output the first time the run and after that are always blank (db:migrate:redo) and some don't seem to ever capture output (test). Odd.

• Elmah sends error mail on development server, but not on production

  Hi, I am trying to set up Elmah so that it sends me an e-mail when a new error occurs. This works fine on my development server, but on the production server no e-mail is sent. The exception is logged on the production server, it's just the e-mail that does not get sent. Now I don't have the slightest idea how to proceed (apart from debugging Elmah on my production server, which seems like a lot of effort to set up). Please help! • Refreshing WEB-INF/lib in Google App Engine (with Eclipse)

  Hi, I've created a new Google App Engine project within Eclipse. I copied several JARs that I need for my application into the WEB-INF/lib directory, and add them to the build path. I make some random calls to these JARs from within the handler, deploy, and everything works fine. However, if I then change one of the JARs outside the project, and copy the new version to WEB-INF/lib (with the same name) and re-deploy, it doesn't seem to be sending the new JAR; everything is still linking to the old one even though it's not even in my WEB-INF/lib anymore. I'm guessing it's being cached by the server or Eclipse is not even realizing something has changed in order to upload the new version. If I just create a new project with the new JAR, everything is fine again (until I have to make another change...) but of course I don't want to have to create a new project for every change to a dependency I make. My question is, how can I make GAE re-upload all the JARs I have from within Eclipse? Thanks in advance, guys :) -Adrian

• Changing Apache2.2.11 httpd.conf has no effect

  Hi, Hopefully someone can help here. I recently installed wampserver ver 2.0 with Apache ver 2.2.11. My issue is, I have some large php scripts which timeout at the default 5 min (300 sec) browser limit (I'm using ie8). It is critcal I get this limit extended. I have tried changing the httpd.conf file to include the following: TimeOut 1200 My objective was to set the timeout at 1200 seconds, or 20 min. I had just chosen a random location to place this directive within the httpd.conf file as I cannot locate any documentation to suggest it belongs in a specific place within the file. Regardless, the changes I make appear in the httpd.conf file that can be found in the system tray for wampserver, however they have no effect - the browser still times out after 5 minutes. I thought perhaps I had the capitals incorrect, so I changed to: Timeout 1200 This change had no effect either. Can someone please help, this is very frustrating. Maybe the command can only be used within a specific module? If so, I have no idea which one, nor do I know the syntax to specify this. Regards Adrian.

• Enabling 8021q on a nic

  Hi, I'm trying to get a vlan interface on a bonded nic (Centos 5.5) and whilst the interface has been very happily created with vconfig I'm seeing no traffic on it at all. Running tcpdump and tshark on the underlying eth0 I see no sign at all of vlan tags in the traffic, and I'm wondering if there's somethign I'm missing on the server side as the network dept say they are sending me the tagged data. I've got the 8021q module loaded, however under lsmod it shows it's only being used by the cxgb3 module, for an unused onboard iSCSI card, whereas my nics (on an HP DL380 G7) are driven by bnx2 and e1000e modules. Should these modules be listing 8021q as used module? should I have something conrete in /etc/modprobe.conf? Thanks Chris

• use of [!NOTFOUND=return] in nsswitch.conf

  Has anyone come across the use of this config for passwd and groups config in nsswitch.conf? Where I'm working I've been told it's been shown to help situations where a group exists both locally and in ldap which was causing issues for group memberships etc. However this config seems to totally mess up nscd which will be aware of the groups and all their members but will not flip the data around to say the user is a member of all it's remote groups. Initially it seems, given a fully available environment, to be exactly the same as [FOUND=return] which is an implict default between stages anyway. However apparently a lengthy ticket with Redhat resulted in the recommended use of that configuration.

• Lexmark C532 error code won't go away

  I can't get rid of error code 84 - Yellow PC unit missing. I've just replaced all 4 photoconductors with genuine Lexmark parts and now the error code keeps appearing. I've swapped the PC units around so know it's not a faulty unit. I've followed the suggestions in the online Lexmark manuals and even called the Lexmark helpline but to no avail. any suggestions? Printer was fine until it gave me a PC unit life warning and I renewed them. Thanks.

• QMail Problem: Can't send email to one specific domain

  I'm running qmail as part of a Plesk installation on a Debian server. Everything works fine apart from any emails sent to @nandos.co.uk. I get no error messages they just end up stuck in the queue for eternity. I have no idea what is going on, because as far as I can tell this is the ONLY domain the server won't send emails to. Any ideas? TIA

• Windows 7 Not Booting After Moving Partition

  I have a Sony Vaio laptop. After using GParted to move the primary Windows partion, the laptop no longer boots, saying 'Operating system not found'. I don't have a recovery disc and the only other machine I have access to is a Mac Mini. I have tried creating a bootable USB using the recovery ISO from Microsoft. I can see all the files on the USB stick from my Mac. I followed the instructions here: http://borgstrom.ca/2010/10/14/os-x-bootable-usb.html I have set the laptop BIOS boot order to be 'External' first, but the laptop refuses to boot from the USB stick. I have previously been able to boot from a linux installation on the USB stick. Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

• Hanging of host network connections when starting KVM guest on bridge

  Hi, I've a KVM system upon which I'm running a network bridge directly between all VM's and a bond0 (eth0, eth1) on the host OS. As such, all machines are presented on the same subnet, available outside of the box. The bond is doing mode 1 active / passive, with an arp_ip_target set to the default gateway, which has caused some issues in itself, but I can't see the bond configs mattering here myself. I'm seeing odd things most times when I stop and start a guest on the platform, in that on the host I lose network connectivity (icmp, ssh) for about 30 seconds. I don't lose connectivity on the other already running VM's though... they can always ping the default GW, but the host can't. I say "about 30 seconds" but from some tests it actually seems to be 28 seconds usually (or at least, I lose 28 pings...) and I'm wondering if this somehow relates to the bridge config. I'm not running STP on the bridge at all, and the forwarding delay is set to 1 second, path cost on the bond0 lowered to 10 and port priority of bond0 also lowered to 1. As such I don't think that the bridge should ever be able to think that bond0 is not connected just fine (as continued guest connectivity implies) yet the IP of the host, which is on the bridge device (... could that matter?? ) becomes unreachable. I'm fairly sure it's about the bridged networking, but at the same time as this happens when a VM is started there are clearly loads of other things also happening so maybe I'm way off the mark. • limiting connections from tomcat to IIS - proxy? iptables?

  Howdy, I've webapp on tomcat6 which is connecting to an M$ PlayReady DRM instance on IIS6.0 The performance is seen to be best when we bench mark (using ab) the DRM service with 25 concurrent connections, which gives about 250 requests per second, which is ace. higher concurrent connections results in TCP/IP timeouts and other lower level mess. But there is no way to control how the tomcat app connects to the service - it's not internally managing a pool of connections etc, they are all isolated http connections to the server. Ideally I'd like a situation where we can have 25 http 1.1 connections being kept alive permanently from tomcat and requesting the licenses through this static pool of connections, which I think would the best performance. But this is not in the code, so was looking for a way to possibly simulate this at the Linux level. I was possibly thinking that iptables connlimit might be able to gracefully handle these connections, but whilst it could limit, it'd probably still annoy the app. What about a proxy? nginx (or possibly squid) seems potentially appealing to run on the tomcat server and hit on localhost as we might want to add additional DRM servers to use under load balance anyway. Could this take 100 incoming connections from tomcat, accept them all and proxy over the the IIS server in a more respectful manner? Any other angles? EDIT - looking over mod_proxy for apache, which we are already using for conventional use on an apache instance in front of this tomcat instance, might be ideal. I can set a max value on the proxy_pass to only allow 25 connections, and keep them alive permanently. Is that my answer? Many thanks, Chris

• Debian Testing installs Iceweasel ESR (severely outdated)?

  I just reinstalled Debian Testing, and for some reason, instead of Iceweasel 25, I have 17. The installed and candidate versions are both 17.0.9esr-1~deb7u1. apt-get update && apt-get upgrade does nothing, and it seems that version 17 is the latest for this install. I was on Debian Testing before, and Iceweasel was at the latest version. Even Debian Stable had an Iceweasel version 20. Why would it be trying to install ESR now?

• Can I change the system's "Browse for Folder" dialog globally?

  As far as I know, everyone hates the "Browse for Folder" dialog: This dialog is always too small, rarely remembers locations well, and worst of all: forces you to navigate your entire computer using a tedious tree structure. Now, to be fair, some of the problems are likely to do with how apps are invoking the control -- not setting a size or a default directory, etc. But the problem about the tedious tree control remains. Is there any way to customize your Windows installation to use a different control? Preferably an app/installer that does it for you safely, but dropping in a compatible DLL or similar technique would be okay too. Or are we stuck with this terrible control forever?

• Same native and tagged vlan possible on Redhat?

  Hi guys and gals, I'm looking at implementing a systems using a number of tagged and a native vlan connected to a server over a a/p bonded interface. The untagged vlan is for physical machine access, the tagged vlans are connected to bridges and then to QEMU VM's inside the machine. Hopefully this plan is fine, but I'm trying to implement a crippled version of this in a dev environment due to a lack of underlying network config in this location where I just have the same single vlan delivered to the machine on a tag AND plain. I'm nto clear if this is going to work (and that I should just be confident that it will work using different vlans) as I'm seeing odd things like a vm is arping out over the vlan out to the core switch, but the arp reply is coming back on the untagged interface. Now an ARP reply is unicast right? So it's a deliberate thing to send the ARP response on the untagged interface, and not a case that a broadcast response isn't being passed on the tagged side... i.e. there's some underlying logic pushing it that way. Something about the MACs somehow? This is on a CentOS 5.5 machine, vlan's from vconfig. (I've seen reference to the Linux mac-vlan project work, but that's not available here by default.) so 1) Should having the SAME vlan tagged and untagged work? 2) Will different tagged vlans to the untagged interface work nice and easily?

• How do I set the TEMP environment variable for the "Network Service" user?

  We have a system that uses Path.GetTempFile and Path.GetTempPath calls to work with temporary files fairly frequently. This system also runs as the "Network Service" user. We're finding that we're running out of room on the C drive (for other issues, our temp files are cleaned up correctly) and would like to be able to move the temp directory to a different drive. The easiest solution to this seems to be to change the TMP or TEMP environment variables for the Network Service user, but I only seem to be able to set my own user or the "system" variables that are overwritten by the Network Service user profile. How do I set these variables for the Network Service user?

• 2D animations for Android, IOS, web

  Working on Windows 7 platform, I'm interested in creating an app that could run on Android devices (phone or tablet), IOS devices (iPhone, iPad), and the web. First target would be Android. Do you remember those old Arthur Murray footstep diagrams to teach dancing? I want to do the same thing, but animate the steps, so the user can play them all, as well as step forward or backward thru them at their own pace. Perhaps one could generate an animated GIF and then play it on the platform. So there would seem to be two parts to this: 1) A good way to generate the animation images. I can, for example, see using SketchUp - something I know - for this. But is there something better it would be worth investing in? • Apache intermittently aborting requests

  I have just been dealing with a problem whereby http requests are being aborted, seemingly at random. On any particular page in the website, when you opened a page, a number of the assets (img, css, etc) failed to load. If you refreshed, the page may work fine, the same set of assets may fail to load or different assets may fail to load. The net tab in firefox was returning 'Aborted' in the HTTP status code column for the failed assets, even tho in the case of images, the image previews were still working. There was nothing in any of the apache logs about the requests that failed, however since it seemed to point to an apache issue, we restarted apache. The first time we tried, it made no difference but about 10 minutes later, in the absence of a better solution we tried again. Bizarrely, the problem disappeared immeadiately. So now the site seems to be running fine again but its rather unsettling, both the intermittent nature of the problem and the lack of an explanation for its resolution. Has anyone seen anything like this before and if so did you find out the reason behind it? Many Thanks

• Network connection delay after installing indicator-network

  Ok, so here's the thing,I installed wingpanel in UBUNTU 10.10, i removed the gnome-panels (yes, both). In the wingpanel itself there's no NETWORK indicator, so i google it and in some forums, some guy wrote that you have to install "indicator-network". I did it, and it solved the network indicator in the wingpanel, BUT now everytime i turn on my computer, the connection takes like 2 minutes or more to connect, when before installing this thing it did it immediately. How can i solve this? any help?
